LOUISIANA SPRING DRIVING TIPS As seasons change, driving conditions change. As a driver, you need to be prepared for the different driving challenges that come with each passing month. When spring comes around, there a few things to look out for.

• AIR PRESSURE First, be sure to check your air pressure monthly and before any long trips. Maintaining the proper air pressure helps to ensure that your tires can perform the way they were designed to perform. For the best possible performance, we suggest you inflate your tires to the manufacturer recommended air pressure, which can be found on the driver’s door panel, on the glove box door, or in the owner’s manual. Maintaining the proper air pressure helps you combat some of the most common challenges in spring driving, including rain and potholes.

• SPEED Spring weather often has sporadic downpours, which can make driving quite difficult. If there is a sudden downpour, your vehicle could possibly hydroplane. When rainwater mixes with oil or grime on the streets, the roads can become very slick. It is best that you adjust your speed and pay very close attention to the road surface, watching for standing water that might cause hydroplaning.

• TREAD DEPTH When it comes to wet weather driving, your tread depth plays a big role. We recommend checking your tread depth when you check your air pressure, or once a month, and before any long trips. Wet weather traction can be seriously diminished as early as 5/32nds of tread depth. With the sporadic rain and possible damaged road conditions, it is important that your tires have enough tread depth to evacuate water from the contact patch and properly grip the road.

• POTHOLES If you live in a region that deals with harsh winter conditions, you should keep an eye out for serious potholes after the ice thaws. During the winter months, moisture can seep into the road surface, and repeated freezing and thawing can cause potholes, which, if hit hard enough, can seriously damage your tires and wheels. The faster you are driving, the more serious the damage could be. If you cannot avoid hitting a pothole, reduce your speed before hitting it, but release the brake before actually striking the pothole. It is worth noting that properly inflated tires are less susceptible to damage from potholes than underinflated tires.

If you do hit a pothole, we recommend having your tires and wheels inspected afterward for any damage. Potholes can bend and or crack wheels and cause irreparable damage to tires. This damage may not be noticeable to you immediately, but can cause wheel/tire failure in the future. If you catch the damage early, it can prevent more serious damage from occurring down the road.

Fried Egg and Rice

The perfect fried egg combined with almost anything can become a winner. Fried eggs alone create their own warm-rich sauce when perfectly balanced with another complimenting sauce, protein or over rice, pasta or bread. In my backpacking years traveling throughout Southeast Asia, it cost me less than one dollar for a large spoon of jasmine rice topped with a fried egg on the streets of Thailand. This was usually accompanied by spicy ketchup of some kind before Sriracha hot sauce became famous.

I heard that Louisiana folks back in the day would cook up something very similar. Other ideas were to add boudin with the rice, almost like a dirty rice topped with a fried egg. In Hawaii, adding the fried egg on fried rice is called Loco Moco. Rice is one of our Louisiana staples for gumbo, jambalaya or rice and gravy dishes. In Asia it’s first on the list.

At one time, Fried Egg and Rice was considered a poor man’s breakfast, lunch or dinner. Today’s food trends and fast pace life, even street food can make it to the big time. You can never go wrong with simplicity. ENJOY!

Fried Egg and Rice - about 4 servings 4 eggs, fried 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 2 cups jasmine rice, washed and steamed ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon fresh black pepper ¼ cup Sriracha sauce Method: • Wash the rice in cold water at least 4 times till the water runs clear • Cook rice in a medium pot and simmer covered on the stove for about 12 minutes • Rice cookers are great. When steaming jasmine rice use a 1 to 1 ratio with rice and water • In a hot skillet, slowly add a little oil and butter at the same time for over-easy eggs • Place a scoop of cooked rice on a plate and lay the fried egg on top • Sprinkle a salt and pepper over the eggs and serve with Sriracha on the side

While other pollsters show the President doing better in terms of his approval rating and getting credit for the strong economy, it seems his re-election bid in 2020 will be much closer than it otherwise should be. They are joined by the “Deep State” bureaucrats who are in powerful positions throughout our government and the ultraprogressive culture warriors that control Hollywood and our entertainment industry.

Despite the incredible influence of these powerful Democratic Party allies, they pale in comparison to the new “Masters of the Universe” who control several huge social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. This increasingly important ally for Democrats is getting ready to exert tremendous influence in the 2020 election. It can be argued that the left-wing bias of social media helped the Democrats win control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 election. The “blue wave” in the recently concluded mid-terms is a mere appetizer for what the social media giants are preparing for the 2020 presidential election.

Their most important tool is censorship and they utilize that weapon on a regular basis. Every day, social media platforms ban conservative activists and media figures from their sites. This week, Alex Jones, controversial talk show host and commentator, was banned by Facebook. This follows his removal from other platforms such as YouTube and Twitter. Along with Jones, Facebook banned conservative commentators Paul Joseph Watson, Laura Loomer and others in an all-out attack on “far-right” and “fringe” personalities. Facebook even deemed the popular videos of conservative personalities Diamond and Silk as “unsafe to the community.”

While some of the opinions espoused by these commentators may be controversial, conspiratorial or completely inaccurate, they should be protected by the free speech rights enshrined in the First Amendment. The fact that these protections are eroding in our society is downright frightening. An Orwellian suppression of free speech is not only a disservice to the American people, it also helps promote the prevailing liberal ideology that has not been banned by either social media or their partners in the mainstream news media.

The social media agenda is apparent to any objective observer. They will be working overtime to assist the Democratic Party between now and the election next November. The examples of such assistance are plentiful. For the past week, Hollywood conservative James Woods, a rare breed indeed, has been banned by Twitter. In response, President Trump tweeted an important question, “How can it be possible that James Woods (and many others), a strong but responsible Conservative voice, is banned from Twitter?”

Dear LSU Family, Today is my first official day in service to our university, a place that transformed my life many years ago and so many others before and since. Serving as your Director of Athletics is truly humbling. This is home and my alma mater but I chose LSU because I believe.

I believe in who we are. We share a passion for LSU that cannot be measured. Like every one of you, I treasure the accomplishments, traditions and great moments of the past, and I anxiously await to see what we accomplish together in the years ahead.

I believe in LSU. There is no place in America that embodies a people, a culture and a place like LSU in the great state of Louisiana. There is no institution more important to this state and its people than LSU and we will do our part to elevate this university, while graduating our studentathletes and preparing them for their lives after college.

Gardenias are some of the most popular flowering plants featured in Southern landscapes. Similar to azaleas and camellias, gardenias are evergreen shrubs that bloom in the spring, albeit later in the season.

They are members of the Rubiaceae family along with coffee, pentas, and ixora. Although native to sub-tropical regions, gardenias are fairly cold hardy. Most will tolerate temperatures near 0°F. Second to their Will Afton sweet smelling blooms, their heat tolerance is what helps them excel in the Deep South. The dark green glossy foliage provides a beautiful backdrop throughout the growing season.

Site selection, like with most plants, is important when planning to add gardenias into the home landscape. Although they can tolerate full sun, locations with morning sun and filtered after noon light are ideal. The soil should be moist with moderate drainage. The optimum soil pH range for gardenias is between 5.5 and 6.0. Have the soil tested to determine the current pH and adjust with lime or sulfur if found to be out of range. Amend the soil by incorporating 3-4 inches of organic matter (homemade compost, composted manures, etc.) at planting. Follow recommended planting instructions by digging a hole slightly shallower than and 2-3 times as wide as the root ball. Slightly pack excavated soil around the plant and water in to collapse any voids. Finish the planting by adding a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (pine straw, pine bark, cypress, etc.).

Another reason why gardenias are popular landscape plants is because of the variation within cultivars available at the nursery. There seems to be a gardenia that’s fits in any space you have to offer. The lowest I believe we will win championships. We have some of the best student-athletes in the world growing selection is ‘Dwarf Gardenia’. It grows about right here in Louisiana. We will support them with the best coaches, staff, facilities and academic 2-3ft tall and 3-4ft wide, giving it a spreading-like support in college athletics. And we will win SEC and NCAA championships while building a growth habit. ‘Daisy’ has a more bushy growth habit world-class experience for our student-athletes. and reaches 2-4ft tall and wide. It produces a single flower while as most other varieties produce double flowers. ‘Frost Proof’ gardenia is a medium sized shrub I believe that we can surpass our own high expectations if we do it together. Every single one with a more upright growth habit and fine foliage of you is important to our mission. I know what this place means to you, because it means the same to me. It’s difficult to put it into words, but we all feel it when we are together, heading in texture, averaging 4-5ft tall and 3-4ft wide. It is well known to Louisiana gardeners because it was promoted as a Louisiana Super Plant in 2011. the same direction with the same passion, joy and determination that makes the LSU family so special. To win the 2020 election, it will be essential for these social media titans to continue to silence those voices who may be promoting President Trump or providing an alternative narrative to the liberal propaganda being promulgated by the allies of the Democratic Party.

Like most other plants, gardenias have a few common pests. Whiteflies and scales feed on the foliage of the plant. They produce honey dew which falls on lower leaves and provides a substrate for black sooty mold to grow on. Treat with a horticultural spray to keep under control.

Follow the label for mixing instructions and application frequency. More than one application of spray will be required to control both scales and whiteflies. Flower thrips are another pest of gardenia. The small insect (1/20th inch) feed on developing flower buds that cause the flowers to brown quickly soon after opening. They are hard to manage because they live inside the flower bud. The most effective strategy is to use a systemic insecticide like imidacloprid. Like with all pest problems, keep plants healthy and they will be able prevent most infestations.

Follow plant spacing recommendations, supplement irrigation, and provide adequate fertility to encourage optimum growing conditions.
