To my wife and children, I know my presence is missed, but my legacy will live on through you. Know that I will miss you as well as you will miss me. Even though I am not here to hold your hand I am here to watch over you. I will be there to stand over you through out your future adventures. For my lovely wife, I know this is not what we had planned, but it is the hand that we were dealt. Be strong, I might not be there in flesh, but I am in spirit. I will be there standing beside you in everything you do. I never intended for you to have to travel through this life with out me. Now, since I am gone, I want you to know I lived my life as God taught me to, to love others, to be kind, to be the man that God shaped me to be. I will rest easy because I know I did not die in vain, because I know you will let my legacy live on through you and our children.

Through God’s Grace, I was able to spread love and kindness through the many of lives I got to touch through the years.

Every day I woke up ready to put on the uniform so many have taken for granted. I woke up to embrace what God had in store for me. I chose to put on the uniform because I wanted the people, I came across to know that the police they came across everyday were caring people just like them that the men and women in blue care about the people that we serve every day. There was not a day that would go by that I didn’t want to make a difference in the lives of others.

I know it brought you pleasure to see me smile when you so graciously made fun of me. Just know I knew it was a way for you to show me that you cared. I know that you have a heavy heart as of now, but I am now here to watch over you everyday that you put on that uniform. Keep in your mind that God and I have your six. I might be gone but my legacy will live through you and the way that you treat the people that you will come across. Be cautious, firm but also remember to have a heart and be caring and listen to the people you come across. SUMMERTIME SALVIAS

It seems as though summer is already here. Our first week of 90° temperatures and its just May. As we get closer and closer to summer, gardeners will be looking to plant flowers that can withstand the brutal onslaught of long, hot summer days. With all of the different species of flowers available for use in Louisiana, some start to struggle when daytime temperatures start averaging above 85° F. The genus Salvia is interesting to study. They are a member of Lamiaceae, the mint family, which gives them opposite leaf arrangement Will Afton and square stems. Botanists have identified three different areas of origination: the Americas, the Mediterranean, and Eastern Asia. Early on, they were primarily used as ingredients in herbal remedies. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century where salvias became popular among those who garden for pleasure. Currently, Salvias are gaining popularity in niche gardening designs like butterfly, hummingbird, and pollinator gardening because of the abundance of nectar produced in flowers. If there were one plant that would represent all pollinator plants, Salvias would do it proudly.

Because of their popularity, you will find many species of Salvia available at nurseries and garden centers. Salvia spendens offer some old and new choices. Most are familiar the cultivar ‘Red Hot Sally’, a small compact plant that reaches a height around 12 inches and produces a wonderful show of bright red flowers on spikes. Another series of S. spendens is gaining some attention. The cultivars ‘Lighthouse Red’ and ‘Lighthouse Purple’ are similar in appearance to ‘Red Hot Sally’ but they get about twice the size and offer a second color option. The ‘Lyrical’ series of S. nemorosa is also interesting to note. ‘Lyrical Silvertone’ is special in that it is two toned in color with deep purple and silver flower spikes. It reaches a medium size of 24 inches tall. Salvias can also be used for height in the back of a bed or as centerpieces in the middle of large island beds. S. microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ is a larger growing species. It reaches a height around 36 inches tall and produces gorgeous red and white flowers. S. greggii ‘Flame’ is another larger growing species that reaches a similar height but produces bright red flowers.

Many of the salvias mentioned in the last paragraph will re-seed themselves at the end of the season and return the following year as newly sprouted plants. This is usually a positive characteristic of plants but sometimes re-seeding plants can move around on their own in the garden. The mealy cup sage, S. farinacea, is a root-hardy salvia that will return each year from the previous root system. There are two cultivars planted at the LSU AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station, ‘Henry Duelberg’, a purple selection and ‘Augusta Duelberg’, a white selection.

Both of which survived the winter weather event back in January of 2018.

The salvias listed in this article are only but a few that are sold at local nurseries and garden centers. You’ll have to get out and see what is available near you.

LOUISIANA SPRING DRIVING TIPS As seasons change, driving conditions change. As a driver, you need to be prepared for the different driving challenges that come with each passing month. When spring comes around, there a few things to look out for.

• AIR PRESSURE First, be sure to check your air pressure monthly and before any long trips. Maintaining the proper air pressure helps to ensure that your tires can perform the way they were designed to perform. For the best possible performance, we suggest you inflate your tires to the manufacturer recommended air pressure, which can be found on the driver’s door panel, on the glove box door, or in the owner’s manual. Maintaining the proper air pressure helps you combat some of the most common challenges in spring driving, including rain and potholes.

• SPEED Spring weather often has sporadic downpours, which can make driving quite difficult. If there is a sudden downpour, your vehicle could possibly hydroplane. When rainwater mixes with oil or grime on the streets, the roads can become very slick. It is best that you adjust your speed and pay very close attention to the road surface, watching for standing water that might cause hydroplaning.

• TREAD DEPTH When it comes to wet weather driving, your tread depth plays a big role. We recommend checking your tread depth when you check your air pressure, or once a month, and before any long trips. Wet weather traction can be seriously diminished as early as 5/32nds of tread depth. With the sporadic rain and possible damaged road conditions, it is important that your tires have enough tread depth to evacuate water from the contact patch and properly grip the road.

• POTHOLES If you live in a region that deals with harsh winter conditions, you should keep an eye out for serious potholes after the ice thaws. During the winter months, moisture can seep into the road surface, and repeated freezing and thawing can cause potholes, which, if hit hard enough, can seriously damage your tires and wheels. The faster you are driving, the more serious the damage could be. If you cannot avoid hitting a pothole, reduce your speed before hitting it, but release the brake before actually striking the pothole. It is worth noting that properly inflated tires are less susceptible to damage from potholes than underinflated tires.

If you do hit a pothole, we recommend having your tires and wheels inspected afterward for any damage. Potholes can bend and or crack wheels and cause irreparable damage to tires. This damage may not be noticeable to you immediately, but can cause wheel/tire failure in the future. If you catch the damage early, it can prevent more serious damage from occurring down the road.

7-8 YR OLD HOUND MIX.

Annie is looking for a person with whom she can share a ton of love and many hours of companionship. She is a wonderful, happy dog who adores people. Because Annie is so strong she is recommended for someone who is used to handling a large dog. She is not recommended for families with small children because she tends to be so enthusiastic she can accidentally knock little children down. A family with teenagers would be fine for her. Annie walks on a leash, knows basic commands, and is house trained. She needs a securely fenced yard for exercise as well as space inside to be with her people, which is her greatest joy. Annie has a dominant personality and does not get along well with all dogs. For that reason and because she loves attention so much, we recommend her for a single dog home.

Annie is a 7-8 yr old hound mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and receives regular heartworm prevention. If you would like to meet Annie, please email START. Adult cats and dogs are wonderful pets! Please consider an adult when adopting an animal. They will bond with you and be just as devoted as a kitten or puppy will eventually be. There are several advantages to adopting an adult: 1) They generally are calmer and more attentive to you than a puppy or kitten.

2) They are often already trained.

3) You can know their personality from the beginning. With a six to eight week old pet it is sometimes not obvious.

4) They know what it is like to be abandoned and have to fend for themselves in many cases, so they love you all the more for giving them a home!
