REOPENING AFTER THE VIRUS: SMALL BUSINESSES, ESTABLISHED NEIGHBORHOODS LOOK STRONGER In 2006, geographer Richard Campanella with the Tulane School of Architecture initiated a study to determine how and why areas of New Orleans recovered after Katrina. A joint effort by Tulane and LSU, funded by The National Science Foundation, Campanella’s finding were written in a front page story in the Times Picayune/New Orleans Advocate on May 4th.

673 businesses were surveyed from late 2005 through 2007….restaurants, hardware stores, boutiques, auto repair shops, barbers, banks, coffee shops and chain retailers. There were different parameters used in this study because of the capricious effects from Katrina along several business corridors. Obviously, the pandemic is more of a leveler of the playing field and does not include the physical destruction nor the displacement of peoples outside of the affected trade areas.

It took three months after Katrina…around the first of 2006…for business reopenings to reach the 50% mark; meaning half the affected businesses were open to some degree. The mean average of 70% of all businesses was reached three months later. Although floodwaters varied in the areas studied, the most telling statistic was the area where the businesses were located.

In virtually every case, those neighborhoods with higher income skews showed a more consistent recovery rate and a faster rate than those in lesser income areas. About 95% of businesses in the higher income areas recovered with the poorer, more flood affected areas recovery stood at 45%.

Many of the poorer area enterprises were closer to financial instability before Katrina, a parallel that should be noted as data is gathered from Corona. A spirit of renewal and grittiness spurred the recovery rate in every area but even more so among high stakes owners of local businesses, those with more expensive and credit purchase inventory.

A surprising finding was the fact that nonessential businesses actually fared better than the essential ones. “Wants” trumped “needs in the majority of cases. Restaurants, bars and spas opened at a higher rate than hardware stores, pharmacies and automotive shops. However, the Corona pandemic shouldn’t follow this skew as the needs types of stores are universally open while the wants types are generally closed to normal patterns of daily business. This also bodes well for a full recovery as desires to shop, eat out and mingle (think: Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin) will remain constant with the pent-up desires fomented by the stormy surge of Katrina in 2005.

One of the keys in recovery is the need for leadership to open and set an example for the rest of the pack, so to speak. A choice restaurant, popular bar, trendy spa opening will encourage the others sitting on the fence or still struggling with reopening at all. Going by the fancy scientific term “spatial spillover impact”, those who run towards the fire will rally those who retreat or remain in place to show the “spirited sense of fortitude” that allowed New Orleans to recover in 2005, San Francisco to rebuild in 1906 and countless other examples of those ready to step forward with allow the remedy of renewal without scuttling the course of the cure.

Corona will not change the demographics of an area as Katrina did but the procedures of doing business will soon show a caution that will be practical and not panic-driven. As we adjusted to major changes in pre-flight procedures after 9/11, so will the country adjust to certain distancing and masking procedures in many cases where the general population, not the politicians, deem it prudent. The steps of reckoning and retribution are still a ways in the future and somebody or someone, notably China, will have to pay for this, at best, “horrible mistake”, not only to the United States but the world. That’s a production that’s a long way off; we have a pandemic to round up, a POTUS election to hold and a coming to Jesus with our journalistic efforts and sense of fair play. Me, I’m looking forward to 2024, when most of the players on the big stage will be gone or forgotten and this nation has taken steps to not only prepare for another pandemic but cured many of the ills of those who have been ignored, stepped on or generally dismissed as money talks and…well, you know the rest.

Tony’s Take TIGERS WRAP UP DREAM SEASON WITH 20 POTENTIAL PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS After umpteen mock drafts, the NFL snuggled at home and in remote corners of the country to pick the newest professionals to enter their world. Of the 255 players chosen in seven rounds between 32 teams, the Southeastern Conference easily dominated the selections, with 15 first round picks. Leading the way was LSU with five selections in the first round, including Joe Burrow at number one and Clyde Edwards-Helaire at number 32. Alabama, as usual, led in the beginning but the last half of the first round and the last four rounds of the draft itself clearly belonged to the Tigers.

In all, 20 LSU players were either drafted or signed free agent offer sheets, including the only deep snapper to be chosen, Blake Ferguson. Fourteen were drafted, tying the record set in 2004 by Ohio State. Five offensive linemen, four linebackers, two defensive backs, two tight ends, two wideouts, one running back, two defensive linemen, one long snapper….and, oh, yeah… that guy….was he better than anyone we got? …… one super quarterback.

That was five more draft selections than Alabama, which came in second. But don’t get too cocky, Tiger fans. The Tide left a nice portion of first rounders in Tuscaloosa for 2021, including Louisiana players DeVonte Smith and Dylan Moses as well as Tiger heartbreaker Patrick Surtain. Include Alex Leatherwood in that group, along with special teamer/receiver Jaylen Waddle and a couple more players whom most of us haven’t heard of lately. Ja’Marr Chase, the reigning Belitnikoff winner at wide receiver seems to be the only Tiger named as an early selection but he could go as high as number two.

Grasses used for establishing lawns have evolved to be pruned (mowed) on a regular basis. The growing points of grass plants occur in buds found along nodes that are low to the ground. This is a big different than most other landscape plants where major growing points are found at the ends of stems and branches. It is the protected position of these growing points allows grasses to tolerate consistent mowing.

Regular mowing of lawn grass promotes growth and helps to ensure a healthy, dense turf.

When the grass is cut, the plant produces more foliage in order to compensate for the lack of photosynthesis production. This results in the plant producing more stems (runners) and leaves, resulting in a thick mat of intertwined turf that becomes resistant to several environmental conditions including excessive heat, drought, and weed pressure. Mowing also creates uniformity, which many people find to be the best quality of a well maintained home lawn.

Several weed species including crabgrass and goosegrass need direct sunlight for germination.

When grass is cut too short, sunlight is allowed to reach the soil level therefor promoting germination of these weeds. Excess sunlight penetration also increases soil temperatures and encourages early germination of many other weed species. Proper mowing heights are essential components of a weed control program.

Keep mower blades sharp. Dull blades rip and tear leaf tissue rather than cut it cleanly. Torn leaf blades transpire more water, provide a larger opening for disease causing pathogens, and take away from the beauty of a home lawn. Purchase a second set of mower blades so that you always have a sharp pair on hand.

The optimum mowing height of a particular species of lawn grass is determined by its growing habit and leaf width. Grasses with very fine textured and narrow leaves are typically cut at a lower height whereas grasses with wider blades are allowed cut at taller heights. To measure the grass height, use a ruler and measure from the top of the soil to the height of the grass foliage.

Do this in several different locations and take an average of the numbers. Use the chart below to determine the best height to cut your lawn grass.
