LOUISIANA SPRING DRIVING TIPS As seasons change, driving conditions change. As a driver, you need to be prepared for the different driving challenges that come with each passing month. When spring comes around, there a few things to look out for.

• AIR PRESSURE First, be sure to check your air pressure monthly and before any long trips. Maintaining the proper air pressure helps to ensure that your tires can perform the way they were designed to perform. For the best possible performance, we suggest you inflate your tires to the manufacturer recommended air pressure, which can be found on the driver’s door panel, on the glove box door, or in the owner’s manual. Maintaining the proper air pressure helps you combat some of the most common challenges in spring driving, including rain and potholes.

• SPEED Spring weather often has sporadic downpours, which can make driving quite difficult. If there is a sudden downpour, your vehicle could possibly hydroplane. When rainwater mixes with oil or grime on the streets, the roads can become very slick. It is best that you adjust your speed and pay very close attention to the road surface, watching for standing water that might cause hydroplaning.

• TREAD DEPTH When it comes to wet weather driving, your tread depth plays a big role. We recommend checking your tread depth when you check your air pressure, or once a month, and before any long trips. Wet weather traction can be seriously diminished as early as 5/32nds of tread depth. With the sporadic rain and possible damaged road conditions, it is important that your tires have enough tread depth to evacuate water from the contact patch and properly grip the road.

• POTHOLES If you live in a region that deals with harsh winter conditions, you should keep an eye out for serious potholes after the ice thaws. During the winter months, moisture can seep into the road surface, and repeated freezing and thawing can cause potholes, which, if hit hard enough, can seriously damage your tires and wheels. The faster you are driving, the more serious the damage could be. If you cannot avoid hitting a pothole, reduce your speed before hitting it, but release the brake before actually striking the pothole. It is worth noting that properly inflated tires are less susceptible to damage from potholes than underinflated tires.

If you do hit a pothole, we recommend having your tires and wheels inspected afterward for any damage. Potholes can bend and or crack wheels and cause irreparable damage to tires. This damage may not be noticeable to you immediately, but can cause wheel/tire failure in the future. If you catch the damage early, it can prevent more serious damage from occurring down the road.

Beef - Shrimp - Biscuit

Beef stew is a dish that dates back hundreds of years. Traditionally, it’s a rough cut of beef or lamb that is cut into large pieces, slowly braised with onions, garlic, wine, and a good beef stock.

MY Beef – Shrimp – Biscuit is a twist on the customary beef stew, but still just as hearty. You could almost say my recipe is a surf ‘n’ turf style beef stew. Rice or pasta will not be necessary for this recipe as the biscuit is a starch – the filler. Carrots and potatoes are not added to this recipe, but they are standard ingredients to a good old Irish stew. A wonderful early spring or winter dish, but light enough with the enhanced shrimp to enjoy any time of year. The green peas not only add color, but a light vegetable to balance the stew. Shoulder or rump cuts of beef are used for this dish. Cut the beef into 1 ½ cube pieces, not too big. Ask your butcher, for a chuck roast, and they can easily cut it up for you. I use red wine as the first braising liquid in its beginning stages. After that cooks down for a few minutes and reduces a quality beef broth or stock is the next important ingredient making this dish full bodied. I use a little tomato paste to richen flavors. Once the beef has braised to a tender point, about 1 hour, you can begin the final process. Add the shrimp, sautéed mushrooms, and peas at the end to assist in making this dish something unique. Beef – Shrimp – Biscuit is a variation from something old to something innovative. ENJOY

Beef - Shrimp - Biscuit - 8 servings Beef Stew:

1 pound chuck or rump, large cube ¼ cup flour ½ onion, chopped 1 celery stalk, chopped 1 tablespoon garlic, minced ¼ cup olive oil 1 ½ teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon fresh black pepper 1 cup red wine (good quality) 2 tablespoons tomato paste 4 cups beef stock 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped 1 lb. shrimp 21-25 size, fully peeled ½ cup frozen English peas 1 cup baby bella mushrooms, sliced 8 biscuits, freshly baked

Method:

• Put flour in a gallon zip lock bag and add the cubed beef. Toss and shake off excess flour • In a medium pot heat ½ the olive oil and add the onions, celery and garlic • Stir and cook for 2 minutes. Add the beef, salt and pepper and cook the meat searing on all

sides by stirring after 30 seconds per side on high heat.

• Add the wine and cook for 5 minutes on high heat. Add the beef stock and stir • Return to a light boil, and add stir in the tomato paste. Add herbs and simmer for 1 hour.

• Taste to adjust seasoning. Preheat oven to 400 degrees • Bake biscuits for recommended time on label or if making from scratch, follow your own

recipe’s details for a quality biscuit

• In another skillet, add the remaining olive oil and sauté off the mushrooms • When mushrooms are almost cooked, about 3 minutes, add the shrimp and cook till done • Check the beef is tender. If not, simmer covered for an additional 30 minutes • Add green peas, mushrooms and shrimp to the stew and stir • Simmer for 5 minutes and check for flavor and tender beef • When done, place a biscuit on a plate and pour the stew directly over the biscuit.

Words to GREAUX by UNDERSTANDING FERTILIZERS The beginning of the growing season is busy and exciting. As the weather turns warm, gardeners come out in groves to start weeding flowerbeds, planting flowers, and applying mulch. Both garden centers and home improvement stores advertise and promote gardening products during this time of year. Garden tools, gloves, and pesticides are some of the more common products available. The most popular product by far, other than the plants themselves, is fertilizer. You need it for your plants to live. Without it, your plants will not bloom, fruit, or Will Afton grow properly. While this is all true, some of the fertilizer products can be slightly misleading. People always want to know what the best fertilizer is and which one they should choose for their landscape plants. The answer is different for every garden.

Soil testing should be the first step in determining a fertilizer program for any type of plants such as lawn grass, vegetables, or landscape shrubs. Fertilizing is the supplemental application of essential plant nutrients. The soil plays an integral role in providing nutrients to plants. A soil test analysis provides a survey of what nutrients are readily available in your soil. It also shows what nutrients are deficient. Choose a fertilizer that provides nutrients that are reported deficient by a soil test. That is the best answer to best fertilizer question.

The LSU AgCenter, along with other land grant universities, provide a soil testing service to the public. Check with your local extension for information on how to submit a sample.

In order to compare and contrast different fertilizer products it is helpful to understand the fertilizer label. Products labeled as a plant fertilizer must contain a “fertilizer analysis” on the label. A fertilizer analysis displays the content of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium for that particular product. These three elements represent the primary nutrients required for healthy plant growth. Three numbers separated by dashes are used to show the percentage of each element (N-P-K). Use the analysis to determine which fertilizer to use in a home fertilization program.

Complete fertilizers contain some of all the nutrients. Vigoro Tree, Shrub, and Evergreen Fertilizer (16-4-8) is a good example. Fertilizers like 8-8-8 and 13-13-13 are also examples of complete fertilizers. Incomplete fertilizers contain only one or two of the primary nutrients. Calcium nitrate (15.5-0-0), super phosphate (0-17-0), and muriate of potash (0-0-60) are popular examples.

Controlled release fertilizers provide nutrients to the soil over an extended period. The products release nutrients anywhere between a few weeks to several months. This allows for less frequent applications and prevents excess nutrients from leaching out of the root zone. Osmocote is a well-known brand of slow release fertilizers.

Organic fertilizers are made from materials that are derived from one living organisms such as animals or plants. These products are becoming more and more available. They are not concentrated like conventional fertilizer, but they still provide primary nutrients. Black Kow Composted Cow Manure (0.5-0.5-0.5) and composted chicken manure (3-2-2) are commonly seen products that fall under complete fertilizer category. Blood meal (12-0-0) and bone meal (010-0) are examples of organic incomplete fertilizers.

Choosing the right fertilizer is like putting together a puzzle. The soil test analysis is one side of the puzzle while the fertilizer is corresponding piece. It’s all about supplying nutrients that are deficient. Don’t guess, soil test!
