‘Tis the Season PR…

Christmas is coming to the town of Pearl River, with Christmas comes a season of Joy, Hope and Giving.

I’d like to use this months’ “PR Ramble” to share a story of just that; one of joy, hope and giving. This story starts back serval months ago. Many of you know we have some pretty amazing people that live in Pearl River, but did you know that a few of them got together to form a group to help better our community?

The groups name is the Pearl River Area FFA Alumni & Supporters , they are doing some pretty amazing things in our community. It all started when a few men and woman of PR realized something very important. They realized that some of our children have experienced the joy of raising livestock animals and showing them by participating in our Parish and State Fairs. What was noticed however was the number of children participating was staggering low. Up until recently, unless you lived in rural areas of Pearl River or had family that lived outside of the town limits, you were not able to have such an opportunity or even be introduced to the responsibility of being a caregiver for any animal other than a household pet. Children within our town limits were missing out on something that many members of this group had the privilege of experiencing as a child, the joy of raising livestock. With is in mind the group put their heads together to figure out a way to bring this opportunity to our children and a hope to our future generations of this lost ability. First, they spoke with local school leaders and town officials, getting everyone to agree that our children needed an opportunity and place (ways and means) to experience raising farm animals. After having the town amend their ordinances, the group decided that having a barn at our local High School would be a great way to introduce students to the responsibilities and experiences that were lacking.

The students could have a chance (some for the very first time) to own their very own livestock. The barn on the PRHS grounds is still a hopeful expectation but working with the school board has been off to a slower start than was originally anticipated. One of the PR FFA Alumni members, Danny Williams, stepped up and generously allowed the use his barn for FFA and 4-H students to have a place to now house their livestock. This act of kindness has brought together all our Pearl River schools, giving opportunities for our Elementary, Jr. High and High School students to hopeful also enter the livestock shows in the future. The gifts of giving time, money and resources from volunteers, business owners, teachers, students, parents, schools and community leaders have been heartwarming to say the least. This is what PR Pride is all about folks. This Friday Dec.7th, 4pm-6pm, the PR FFA Alumni and Supporters would like you to join them for a “House Warming” for the animals, at their Barn Grand Opening Event located at 37006 Oak Ranch Road.

With this story comes a great Big Congratulations to several men that spear headed the barn renovations and received the Fox 8 Great Neighbor award just last month.

Thank you for all you, Richie Shaeffer, Roy Yates, Danny Williams, Kenny Martin and Chris Wallace!! PR could not be Prouder to know you men. You are an inspiration to us all.

The LSU Tigers likely will be shut out for any defensive player honors this year but the offense and coaching ranks will more than make up for it. The country’s most exciting offense and best offensive skill set of runners, passers and receivers should garner at least three of the national awards pending.

Start with Joe Burrow, whose odds to secure the Heisman Trophy next week are prohibitive. His closest pursuers are a pair of Ohio State players, defensive end Chase Young and former Georgia quarterback Justin Fields. Also in the running are former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts now at Oklahoma and a pair of running backs from Wisconsin and Oklahoma State. Burrow’s calm demeanor, unparalleled statistics and leadership abilities have led LSU to its first number one ranking since 2011and his story is amazing. Because of this, the Davey O’Brien Award for the nation’s top quarterback and the Maxwell Trophy for the nation’s most outstanding player should be his as well. Burrow has created a one-season legacy that should place him as the number one all-time quarterback from the SEC with the possible exception of Peyton Manning.

La’Marr Chase is the late season favorite to win the Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s outstanding receiver. Chase leads the country in average yards per catch and touchdown catches and is among the leaders for total yards and total receptions. Chase is a clutch receiver, rarely dropping a pass or running an incorrect route. His yards after the catch are off the charts.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a finalist for the Hornung Award, given to the most versatile player in the country. Edwards-Helaire has more than surprised the country with his tough, evasive running, his pass-catching abilities and his role as a kickoff return man. He is also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award for the best running back in the country.

Both Coach Ed Orgeron and Assistant Coach Joe Brady are up for the Bear Bryant and Frank Broyles awards for the best head coach and assistant coach, respectively. Brady’s signature offensive plan, paired with the rest of the offensive coaching team, has made LSU the most feared team in the country. And what else can we say in praise of the Cajun who would be king.

Meanwhile, the Tigers get ready to take on Georgia, the nation’s number four team, for the SEC Championship in Atlanta this weekend. The Tigers will be a solid 6 to 9 point favorite over a team that has shown little ability to score more than 20 points against better competition.

This writer doesn’t think the Bulldogs will score more than 14 points while the Tigers should roll with at least 35 points. The last time they met in Atlanta, the LSU defense spearheaded a 42-point second half outburst after the Tigers trailed at halftime, 10-0. The Tigers won that game, 42-10 without a true major college quality quarterback but then the so-called coaching brain trust of Les Miles shut down and the Tigers were shut out by Alabama in the national championship game.

That won’t happen again. If the Tigers do it right, they will be playing Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl to determine if they will play for the national championship, again, for the fourth time this century, in New Orleans. They most likely will play Ohio State in a rematch of the 2007 championship game. That means LSU could play the number four, number three and number two teams in the country to win the title. No weak sister like Notre Dame or Washington as in years past. This truly will be a premier test of two great teams with great offenses. LSU will have the offensive advantage, Ohio State the defensive, special teams should be a wash but the intangibles and coaching will definitely be on the LSU side of the ledger. Get by Georgia and an untested Clemson team and the irony of having a former Ohio State quarterback face down his former team while a former Georgia quarterback faces a long-time SEC nemesis, LSU, will be two back stories that will keep the keyboards clicking for at least 10 days. If it comes down to an air game, LSU will win comfortably. They will face the best defensive player they’ve seen this year but not the best defense. Ohio State hasn’t been super impressive against Penn State or Michigan defensively but the were against Wisconsin. Everyone else they played was a weak sister, unlike LSU, whose schedule was one of the four toughest in the country this season, having faced Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Mississippi State and Georgia’s defenses and prevailing. They’ll do the same against the Buckeyes.

Words to GREAUX by CHRISTMAS TREE CARE It seems like the month of November began and ended like a flash in the pan. It also seems like we say that line every year. When end of year festivities make their annual return to the calendar, we find ourselves with busy schedules. Schools go dormant for the holidays season just as the red maple tree in your front yard went dormant going into the fall season. Work schedules will adapt to follow a similar trend. One of the more memorable things about this time of year are the smells that fill the air. Fresh cut Christmas trees and hand-woven garland are one of those amazing smells and the Friday after Thanksgiving is one of the Will Afton busiest times of the year for Christmas tree retailers. Garden centers and nurseries that stay open year around will most likely bring in fresh cut Christmas trees for the holiday season. Seasonal vendors set up shop on busy street corners to let everyone see their stock of Douglas fir, Noble fir and Fraser fir trees for sale.

I get questions all the time about Christmas trees. Everyone wants to know what the best tree is to buy. Well, believe it or not, if you properly care for the tree then you can pick out a tree based on its color, texture, or shape. ‘Frazer Fir’ and ‘Douglas Fir’ trees have a nice blue green color to their needles and when crushed have a pleasant flavor. ‘Noble Fir’ is as noble as you thought it was. These trees have gorgeous shapes and short stiff branches. This may come in handy if you have heavier ornaments to hang on the tree. ‘Colorado Blue Spruce’ trees have excellent pyramidal form and beautiful blue-grey needles. ‘Scotch Pine’ trees are bright green and are often sold as a value priced option.

The first step in properly caring for a recently harvested Christmas tree so that it retains most of its needles and color throughout the season is by making a fresh cut. Once severed from their root system, the trees lose their ability to effectively take up water and nutrients. Remove ½ inch of the bottom of the tree using a sharp saw or chain saw. This cut is commonly referred to as a “fresh cut” and many businesses may offer to do this for you at no extra charge. This should be done right before you set the tree up in its location. If the fresh cut was done at the tree lot, then make sure you go straight home and immediately bring the tree inside for set-up. Once adjusted to stand up straight and look good from every direction add water to the bowl and check it often in order to keep it full. Don’t worry with nutrient solutions, preservers and other type products. Just keep it full of plain water and you won’t have to worry about sweeping up many needles.
