It’s always been a positive term, even in the most negative aspect but as a positive it reaches the pinnacle of self-assurance and emotional stabilization.

The first Joe Cool was an imaginary character created by another imaginary character, Snoopy from the “Peanuts” comic strip. We never saw Joe Cool but we all knew who he was: the unflappable, casual, confident, informed, likable person most of us strive to become, if even for a brief moment. The most famous Joe Cools of all time have been NFL quarterbacks. First, there was “Broadway Joe” Namath, the New York Jets signal caller, who coolly predicted a Jet Super Bowl win 50 years ago over the then Baltimore Colts, the Johnny Unitas-led super power of the NFC. He truly was Joe Cool, becoming the world’s most visible playboy in the world’s most popular playboy city, New York. Then, ten years later on a cold Dallas football field, another Pennsylvania man, like Namath, began his cool reputation as a quarterback playing for Notre Dame in a bowl game in Houston, fighting freezing snow and the flu, to lead the Irish to an improbable 35 to 34 last second win over the tough Houston Cougars in a memorable Cotton Bowl win. Two years later, on a cool football field in southeast San Francisco, the legend of Joe Montana became the legend of Joe Cool II, the undefeated, undersized overachieving signal caller of the then-unheralded San Francisco 49ers. The catharsis of Montana’s touchdown pass to the late Dwight Clark , known as “THE CATCH”, brought tears, closure and unbridled happiness to 49er fans of all ages, including this writer. The dynasty that followed replaced the dynasty of “America”s Team”, the Dallas Cowboys, the antithesis of cool. Joe Montana. Joe Cool.

Set in stone.

Today, there are two new Joe Cools. The first one has the last name of Brady, also the last name of the semi-cool quarterback of the New England Patriots, Tom Brady. This cool Joe lived in the cool city of New Orleans, where his offensive play calling skills helped the New Orleans Saints continue their offensive mastery in the NFL. Joe was an undercover cool; after all, Cool Drew Brees lives in New Orleans and as everyone knows, a cool Brees can’t be beat. So this cool Joe took his cool concepts of the Run/ Pass/Option north to Baton Rouge and together, with another Joe, named Burrow, created the offensive fireworks that led the LSU Tigers to a regular and postseason undefeated record, pending December 28th’s outcome in the Peach Bowl against Oklahoma and if a win is secured there, the matchup January 13th in New Orleans against the winner of the Clemson/Ohio State game, also on the 28th, to determine the national champion.

Joe Burrow doesn’t look like a Joe Cool. He’s a throwback quarterback from a sturdy southeast Ohio region where quarterbacks are seen but rarely heard from. He certainly wasn’t Joe Cool to the Nebraska and Ohio State coaches who either kept Burrow burrowed deep in the depth charts or not even considered at all for a chance to lead storied programs to renewed or continued greatness. As one now-chagrined head coach was quoted a couple of years ago, Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost (you can’t make this up), regarding Joe Burrow transferring to the Cornhuskers, the beleaguered coach said “you think he’s better than what we got?” Doooh! Yeah, Frost! Frost is cold; Burrow is cool and Nebraska football is mired in a decade-long cold spell in the awkward Big 10, where they continue to act as a piñata for the Ohio States and Michigans and others in that conference.

Joe Burrow is Joe Cool III. A better athlete than Tom Brady but with an internal fire parallel to Tom’s. Burrow has already been compared to Brady as the heir apparent to the New England leader in the NFL. With a coach like Bill Belichick, Sean Peyton or Kyle Shanahan, he most definitely would be. Burrow should be the first player picked in the NFL 2020 Draft and may have to return home to steep in mediocracy for a short period of time with the Cincinnati Bengals. It will take great talent evaluators to put a competitive team around Burrow and we pray that will happen. But for now, we will have to be content to watch one of the most personable, humble,focused, driven, unselfish and talented football players to ever walk on a field play for the lesser Bengals of Cincinnati. Certainly Burrow is the greatest to become an LSU Tiger, right up there with Billy Cannon.

Last week, Joe Cool III picked up his second to last national award from his phenomenal 2019 season, the 85th Heisman Trophy given to the best player of any given year. Burrow was such a favorite that Vegas took any bets for him off the board in November. Burrow set all the voting records for this honor, only O.J. Simpson received more first place votes in 1968 (when more voters participated). But victory margins and percentages, cut any way you want, are all records held by Burrow, who became Joe Burreaux over a period of time. Burrow should win the Manning Award, given after the postseason to allow postseason performances to be taken into account. That should be no problem for Burrow, whose award haul equals or exceeds that of Cam Newton nine years ago. Other Tigers won national awards; Ja’marr Chase won the Biletnikoff as the best receiver, Grant Delpit won the Jim Thorpe Award as the best defensive back and Coaches Ed Orgeron and Joe Brady won the Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year awards, respectively. Burrow took everything out there: the Unitas, Davey O’Brien, Walter Camp, Maxwell, SEC Player of the Year, AP National Player of the Year (among other award granters of the same honor), Heisman, soon to win the Manning and God knows what else.

Success comes in all flavors and temperatures. I like the sweet taste and cool feel of success….sort of like Joe Burreaux. God bless you, Joe. You’ve revived a proud program and helped elevate a prouder man, your coach, Ed Orgeron. We’ll really miss your coolness around the place.

Words to GREAUX by MOST POPULAR HOLIDAY PLANT, THE POINSETTIA There are several different species of “holiday” plants used in the trade but none are more recognizable than Euphorbia pulcherrima, commonly known as the poinsettia. Whether revived from a previous year or recently received as a gift, the poinsettia reigns supreme as the most iconic potted plant during the holiday season. The bright colored leaves, actually modified leaves referred to as bracts, attract pollinators to the small yellow flowers found near the center. Traditionally, the bracts of Will Afton poinsettia plants are red but through the introduction of plant breeding techniques, several color combinations have been produced. Currently, there are several shades of red, pink, and white available on the market along with a few multi-colored combinations.

The poinsettia plant as we know it today is native to Central America. The Aztecs were the first people to utilize the plant for its herbal properties. The white sap, botanically termed latex, was harvested and used to help control fevers. The bracts were used to make a red colored dye.

Poinsettia plants belong to Euphorbiaceae, the spurge family, which includes other plants like copper plant, croton, crown of thorns, and the infamous tallow tree. Joel Roberts Poinsett, while acting as the United States Ambassador to Mexico, discovered the wild flowering plant during an excursion in the Mexican countryside. He took cuttings and sent them back to his estate in South Carolina where the story of the poinsettia plant would eventually take off and become what it is today.

So, what do you do when you bring a poinsettia into your home? Well, the first thing to think to think about is a place to put it. Poinsettias prefer full direct sunlight. If they don’t receive enough sunlight, they will grow taller and thinner as they stretch to find more light. A south facing window is a perfect location for a poinsettia in the winter time. Move to a western facing window during the spring time as summer draws near. Irrigate the plant thoroughly so that water flows through the bottom of the pot. Repeat the process when soil completely dries.

Irrigation frequency may vary from situation to situation. Fertilize plants in the following spring with a complete fertilizer. Many gardeners find ease using liquid products like Miracle-Gro Liquid Plant Food. Whichever type of fertilizer is used, be sure it’s applied at the labeled rate for maximum effectiveness.

Like all other plants, poinsettias can have their fair share of insect problems if left unnoticed.

Mottled leaves can be symptoms of several different insect problems. Aphids will feed on young tender growth along with white flies and mealy bugs. Spider mites are another common pest that can be problematic on poinsettias. Use a horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to control these pests. The key is to make follow up treatments as per label instructions. Fungus gnats can develop if plants are grown in shady areas. Reduce watering and move to a brighter location to help prevent their growth.

Poinsettia plants can easily be saved and grown for year after year. Some gardeners have even grown medium sized shrubs out of container grown poinsettias. This can be done in areas with little frost potential. Potted plants are easily grown indoors but need a little extra care to help recreate the proper lighting needed to time the color change for the month of December.

Poinsettias are short day plants which mean they initiate flowering when the amount of day light is less than 12 hours. Place the plant in a closet at 5:00 pm and remove it every morning at 8:00 am to help stimulate the natural flowering sequence. This should allow enough time for proper coloring of bracts for a holiday time display.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our STARTCARES@HOTMAIL.COM volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, WWW.STARTFOSTERS.COM especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Meet five of our wonderful adult cats available for adoption. At this time if year adult cats are often passed over in favor of kittens and puppies, but the adults have so much to offer. Their personalties are known and, while they are affectionate and playful, they are not likely to be climbing the curtains or your pants’ leg. They will bond to a new family if they are given attention and, of course, some catnip and treats!

DUSTY is a three year old Russian Blue spayed female. She is very affectionate and a bit shy at first. Dusty is declawed and not accustomed to being in a home with other pets.

ISSABELLA is a two year old spayed female tortoise shell. She is a sweet, shy cay who loves treats and furry toy mice.

SLATE is a solid gray spayed female, five years old. She is so small and playful, you might think she was a kitten.

JOSIE is a five year old spayed female tuxedo. She is shy but very friendly and vocal once she gets to know you.

JINX is a two year old brown tabby male with a beautiful dark coat. He is so agile you might not notice he is missing a back leg due to an accident when he was a kitten. Jinx needs a family that will also adopt his friend, Elvis.
