2nd Harvest Christmas Food Drive Scheduled for December 14th The Second Harvest Christmas Food Drive will take place at the Northshore Harbor Center in Slidell on Monday, December 14th.

Saints players will be on site from 4 PM until 6 PM or later to sign autographs and pose for pictures inside by the Christmas tree.

The 4 to 7 PM event will feature a raffle drawing for signed Saints jerseys, signed Saints hats and signed footballs. There will be 2 jerseys, 12 NFL footballs and 12 hats. Quarterback Luke McCown will be throwing a football to attendees from 6 to 6:30 PM. Raffle tickets will be $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.

The LSU AgCenter just released their plant of the week the other day and all they are talking about is the pansy. And if you have been living in the south for the last couple of years I would think you are on the same page as those who line up to vote on such matters but if not then you are about to hear about the next best option for a southern gardener to include in their winter garden. The pansy, Viola tricolor var. Hortensis, is a horticultural staple when it comes to cool season annuals and in fact, they are one of the most widely known annual flowers when it comes to all of gardening. One thing to keep in mind with popular plants is that they will come with many different names. One of the industry standard varieties is the Majestic Giants II series. They have large 3.5 inch flowers and come in over twenty different colors and combinations. The ‘Matrix’ series of pansy displays another large sized 3.5 inch flower. This set of pansies has the most color choices and combinations than any other pansy on WILL AFTON the market. You will find several single color shades known as the clear colors and also several mixes including ‘Matrix Ocean Breeze mix’, ‘Halloween mix’ and ‘Raspberry Sundae mix’. The Delta series of pansy gives us a slightly smaller flower at 2.5 inches but still provides us with a lot of color options to include in amongst your current gardening projects. Check out your favorite garden spot and see what varieties are available to you.

HOLIDAY CACTI Many of us think about evergreens, poinsettias and Christmas trees when it comes to this time of the year. Through all of the different shapes and colors of poinsettias, there is still an old favorite that many people like to give and receive during this time of year. Schlumgergera truncata, the “Christmas Cactus”, is in the forest cacti group. Many of the members of this group are naturally epiphytic, meaning they use tree limbs and other plants to support themselves in order to absorb light for photosynthesis.

The Christmas cacti have flattened segments (about 1.5 -2 inches long) that resemble leaves. The blooms come in several different colors including: white, pink, red and purple. The plant gets its name due to the time of year when it flowers because they typically bloom from mid-November to late-January. One of the most common questions I received regarding the Christmas cactus plant is how do you get it to bloom after the first year? Most all of us know this particular plant as a houseplant which rarely ever makes it outside. With that being said, it will typically stay at the same temperature whether it is summer time or winter time. The trick to getting Christmas cactus in bloom is to simulate the original growing conditions to where there are originally from.

Starting in June move your Christmas cacti outside to a shady spot. Provide enough water so that the soil is able to dry out between waterings. By mid-September, let them dry even more between waterings. The next step is cool weather. Flower buds are initiated with cool night time temperatures around 55°F. Once the flower buds start to open up feel free to bring the cactus inside so that everyone will be able to enjoy! Also, make a note that they are easily propagated by stem cuttings. Growing plants from stem cuttings make for an excellent children’s activity.

Waterboarding is supposedly illegal in the United States but that didn’t prevent Athletic Director Joe Alleva, a gutless administration and Les Miles’ so-called supporters from letting this 11-year coach twist in the wind last month. Forget the Felipe Franks de commitment; that was a work in progress. Watching the quarterback development, or lack of it at LSU had more to do with Franks’ move to Florida than the shaft job by Joe, the man who helped devastate Duke’s lacrosse team before bringing his “shoot first” style of management to Baton Rouge.

No, Miles has another year or the rest of his contract to finish before the criticism cranks up again, and crank up it will, if Miles continues in the consistency of his public persona and private coaching philosophy. Amazingly, Alleva and his ilk found a way to make a $4.5 million dollar a year man the victim in a Keystone Cops episode. Like it or not, college football has changed and if the curmudgeon in Tuscaloosa can hire Lane Kiffin to revamp his offense and lose that double tight end “student body right” alpha technique at Alabama, anyone can adjust. Miles has fought offensive change in college football like buggy whip manufacturers fought the automobile over one hundred years ago. A succession of subpar offensive coordinators, including his buddy, Cam Cameron, have not done the job and whether that’s entirely their fault or a combination of their abilities with Miles’ interference in their play calling, it doesn’t really matter now. However, the corporate-style hatchet job on Miles by the so-called leadership at LSU was a case study on how to do everything wrong.

Congratulations, LSU administration, cowardly boosters and especially Joe “The Schmo” Alleva.

Funny how a man who writes e-mails to the fans, scattering manna to the masses like the Krewe of Comus throws Mardi Gras beads, can take his most visible coaching asset and mistreat him for several weeks. Joe, you really wanted Jimbo Fisher back here, a man whose offensive prowess wasn’t all that steady and whose greatest accomplishment was keeping model citizen Jameis Winston on his Florida State team, long enough to win a national championship? Or would you rather consider another thoroughbred like Miles, albeit with a little more communications skill and adaptability? Either way, you don’t have the chops to make such a decision.

You hide behind your emails, for example letting paying fans and loyalty fund supporters know how lucky we were to have South Carolina visiting us after their disastrous flooding.

Of course, you couldn’t guarantee anyone paying less than $5,000 per seat per season the right to purchase their own ticket, but those deep pocket contributors could buy eight. And your humane way of letting us know we could each bring one whole bottle of water into the stadium without having it confiscated?! Wow, was that public relations genius! What about your position on improving the stadium facilities & products to continue to put fannies in seats. How’s that turning out? Where are those improvements for the average fan and a little more understandable communication from the athletic department to let us know you’re at least trying to affect some positive changes? Oh, that’s above your pay grade. Not to worry. That same group of higher ups who allowed you to mess with Miles don’t have the you-know-whats to chide you publicly. Oh, they may tear you a new one in private, but we’ll never know. Certainly it won’t be in the visible way you and your cohorts mishandled things for Miles and LSU in late November. If you missed Thanksgiving, Joe, well, you created your own turkey.

Miles friends in high places didn’t do him much good either. If they had the stroke and the bucks to support this man, why weren’t their voices heard? They backed him privately, previously, when he was under fire, but not this time while he was under the gun. And where were the deep pocket boosters who wanted him out? We didn’t hear from you as well.

Miles may have miles to go in many areas, but I have to agree with those who say he has class. He’s an easy man to like but not the easiest to get to know. But now those feckless leaders in their $100,000 per seat towers, those builders of concession and deception, those politically and money motivated folk, spawn of the gutless board which torpedoed Charles McClendon 35 years ago, to you we say, “Stay Tigers! You go!”

We can only hope that football talented high school seniors and younger will forgive the stupidity of Joe Alleva and his group of Scary Men (and Women?) Fortunately, Paul Mainieri doesn’t have to worry about their incompetence, nor do any of LSU’s other fine coaches, because their sports don’t bring in the bucks that football creates. Years ago, we turned down the right leader from Duke when LSU said “no” to Steve Spurrier. We compounded the gaffe by hiring loser Joe Alleva from the same university. Want to bet Alleva’s gone before Miles is? I guess we’ll (la)cross(e) that bridge when we come to it.

The LSU AgCenter just released their plant of the week the other day and all they are talking about is the pansy. And if you have been living in the south for the last couple of years I would think you are on the same page as those who line up to vote on such matters but if not then you are about to hear about the next best option for a southern gardener to include in their winter garden. The pansy, Viola tricolor var. Hortensis, is a horticultural staple when it comes to cool season annuals and in fact, they are one of the most widely known annual flowers when it comes to all of gardening. One thing to keep WILL AFTON in mind with popular plants is that they will come with many different names. One of the industry standard varieties is the Majestic Giants II series. They have large 3.5 inch flowers and come in over twenty different colors and combinations. The ‘Matrix’ series of pansy displays another large sized 3.5 inch flower. This set of pansies has the most color choices and combinations than any other pansy on the market. You will find several single color shades known as the clear colors and also several mixes including ‘Matrix Ocean Breeze mix’, ‘Halloween mix’ and ‘Raspberry Sundae mix’. The Delta series of pansy gives us a slightly smaller flower at 2.5 inches but still provides us with a lot of color options to include in amongst your current gardening projects. Check out your favorite garden spot and see what varieties are available to you.

HOLIDAY CACTI

Many of us think about evergreens, poinsettias and Christmas trees when it comes to this time of the year. Through all of the different shapes and colors of poinsettias, there is still an old favorite that many people like to give and receive during this time of year. Schlumgergera truncata, the “Christmas Cactus”, is in the forest cacti group.

Many of the members of this group are naturally epiphytic, meaning they use tree limbs and other plants to support themselves in order to absorb light for photosynthesis. The Christmas cacti have flattened segments (about 1.5 -2 inches long) that resemble leaves. The blooms come in several different colors including: white, pink, red and purple. The plant gets its name due to the time of year when it flowers because they typically bloom from mid-November to late-January. One of the most common questions I received regarding the Christmas cactus plant is how do you get it to bloom after the first year? Most all of us know this particular plant as a houseplant which rarely ever makes it outside. With that being said, it will typically stay at the same temperature whether it is summer time or winter time. The trick to getting Christmas cactus in bloom is to simulate the original growing conditions to where there are originally from. Starting in June move your Christmas cacti outside to a shady spot. Provide enough water so that the soil is able to dry out between waterings. By mid-September, let them dry even more between waterings. The next step is cool weather. Flower buds are initiated with cool night time temperatures around 55°F. Once the flower buds start to open up feel free to bring the cactus inside so that everyone will be able to enjoy! Also, make a note that they are easily propagated by stem cuttings. Growing plants from stem cuttings make for an excellent children’s activity.
