We are excited to announce The Wall That Heals Veterans Memorial Replica will be traveling through the Town of Pearl River on an 18 wheeler, Tuesday, November 13th as they make their way to be displayed at the Franklinton Fairgrounds. The town has ordered a large banner and small American Flags to give our schools, churches, business owners, and residents who will line Highway 41 on the morning of November 13th to show our gratitude to the men and women who have served our country. Please keep in mind this will be a very solemn event to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. At this time, the approximate time will be between 9:00 am/10:00 am when it will pass through the town. It will stop at Poitevent Park but will not be taken off truck nor assembled. The Louisiana and Mississippi Patriot Guards will meet the Wall at Poitevent Park to form a procession. We may have over a hundred guards (Veterans) on motorcycles. A safety meeting will be held, motorcycles will be lined up... cars are welcome too! The State Police will also meet at Poitevent Park to provide an escort for the Wall and riders in a motor parade from Poitevent Park to the Franklinton Fair grounds. Since we have the privilege of so many Veterans being at Poitevent Park, Rec. 7 along with the Town of Pearl River have been seeking donations for food to help to feed the veterans before they leave the Park. Everyone is welcome to come but remember this isn’t a party,the Flag will be at half mast as we remember those that gave their ALL for our Country. The Los Angeles Dodgers lost another postseason championship series on Sunday night last week, this time to the Boston Red Sox. The Dodgers have become the poster boy team for an organization that can win in the regular season but forgets how to dance when the competition heats up.

Now the Dodgers have thrown more than 90 million dollars at one of the biggest postseason losers in the history of major league baseball. Clayton Kershaw will receive about $31 million dollars per season or approximately $2 million dollars per win or $300,00 per inning or $200,000 per strikeout. Wow. For a guy over the hill as an intimidating pitcher and a bust after September.

He joins Dave Roberts who is the biggest mismanager of pitching talent in the postseason to continue the saga of the fact that no team in professional sports history blows it like the Dodgers, except maybe the Buffalo Bills of 1991-1994.

Consider this: the Dodgers have had more Rookies of the Year than any other three teams in the National League, including the last two. They have so much talent that starters for other teams sit on the bench. Their young talent level exceeds the Cubs, Nationals, Yankees and Braves combined. They have in Clayton Kershaw the greatest mortal left-hander to ever take the mound in the history of baseball…..so they say. But none of this matters when the guys who play in Chavez Ravine remain in a postseason rut deeper than that ravine, located just north and west of downtown Los Angeles. Kershaw would gladly give up half of his awards if he were only half the pitcher than Madison Bumgarner is for the postseason San Francisco Giants. Kershaw cruises along during his 162-game regular season but therein lies the problem: he’s a surfer boy hurler in a back alley postseason. Kershaw gave up three home runs in the money game Sunday night and showed little fire in trying to shut down the Red Sox the rest of the way. I wouldn’t want Kershaw as my wingman for anything; he’s Coca Cola cowboy when the chips are down.

A whole bunch of Dodger pitching greatsline up well ahead of Kershaw in the postseason: Johnny Podres, Sandy Koufax, Orel Hersheiser, Fernando Vanezuela, Don Newcomb and Don Drysdale come to mind immediately. Clayton turns into a Claymore (mine) when the chips are down. But the teams also chokes, especially on offense. This is a team whose last World Series victory came when manual typewriters were still in operation, cell phones were unheard of as was the Internet and social media. Baseball measureables were pitching velocity and innings pitched, not the wuss crap baseball passes off as gospel for maximum performance. Give me guts over graphs any day. The Dodgers, who once had panache and even some grit, don’t have much of either any more. And as a Giant fan, I couldn’t be happier. The Giants have been to the World Series five times since the Dodgers won their last world title, winning three of those and they could have had a fourth if it weren’t for Manager Dusty Bakere, a former (overrated) Dodger outfielder who is completing his failure circuit in the National League, having been canned by the Giants, Cincinnati and Washington.

IT WASN’T A “STRETCH” TO CALL MCCOVEY THE MOST POPULAR SAN FRANCISCO GIANT OF ALL TIME The sports world lost one of its top gentlemen last week with the passing of Willie McCovey. The 80-year old Hall of Famer had been fighting health issues for more than a decade when he passed on October 31st.

It might be fitting that McCovey died on Halloween because his bat scared hundreds of National League pitchers in the late 50’s through most of the ’70s. When the Giants had a power-laden lineup in those days, McCovey was the leader, even more so than Willie Mays or Orlando Cepeda. The affable Mobile, Alabama slugger was an instant hit in the Bay Area when he was called up on a weekend at the end of July, 1959. Lying on his bed in Burlingame, California, this teenager listened to Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons on KSFO radio describe the 6’4” first baseman as he approached the plate at the newly opened Candlestick Park. McCovey’s first hit was a triple. In all, “Stretch”, as he became known to all Giant fans, had two triples and two singles in a 4 for 4 first Major League game. My thoughts were “well, he does’t seem to be a power hitter but he’ll sure get on base a lot”. 19 years later, McCovey retired, tying Milwaukee Braves third baseman Eddie Matthews with 521 home runs, the most at that time by any Giant player. M&M were the initials of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, the two Yankee sluggers who in 1961 hit 115 home runs between them, a record that will never be broken. Maris had 61; Mantle 54, in an era before steroids. But the other M&M team was Mays and McCovey, who terrorized the National League as much as Hank Aaron and Matthews did for the Braves and Mantle and Maris in the American League.

When the Giants had a surfeit of riches at first base (McCovey, Cepeda and Bill White, all Hall of Famers), first White, then Cepeda, were traded. Cepeda was the Baby Bull, the man who with one swing of his mighty bat, converted me into a lifelong Giant (and sports) fan when I watched him play in the first Sunday major league baseball game ever on the West Coast between, who else, the Giants and the Dodgers. I was, if anything, a Dodger fan, mostly out of ignorance.

I had heard of the Boys of Summer - Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, Carl Furillo, Pee Wee Reese, Don Newcombe, Roy Campanella - the core of the old Brooklyn Dodgers who finally broke through to win the Bums’ first World Series title against the New York Yankees. On that sunny afternoon, all the Summer Boys were on the field except for Campanella, who had sustained a careerending injury in a car wreck after the Dodgers’ final season in Brooklyn. It was magic to see what became baseball history on that summer weekend outing. The Giants won. The next year, the team moved to Candlestick and added McCovey, Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal, Jack Sanford, Billy O’Dell, the first of the Alou brothers, Leon “Daddy Wags” Wagner and others to their lineup. Mays was the leader but McCovey had the fans’ heart. Like Mays and Aaron, he was from South Alabama, an unknown stranger from a part of the country few San Franciscans ever encountered. When McCovey hung ‘em up, he continued to work with the Giants, through ownership changes and the move to AT&T Park in China Basin, a proper setting for baseball.

And they named the waters of San Francisco Bay that eddied on the south side of the stadium, behind right field, where McCovey’s home runs usually landed, “McCovey Cove”, the most famous non-playing field major league venue in existence today.

Many of us think about evergreens, poinsettias and Christmas trees when it comes to this time of the year. Through all of the different shapes and colors of poinsettias, there is still an old favorite that many people like to give and receive during this time of year. Schlumgergera truncata, the “Christmas Cactus”, is in the forest cacti group. Many of the members of this group are naturally epiphytic, meaning they use tree limbs and other plants to support themselves in order to absorb light for photosynthesis. The Christmas cacti have flattened segments (about 1.5 -2 inches long) that resemble leaves. The blooms come in several different colors including: white, pink, red and purple. The plant gets its name due to the time of year when it flowers because they typically bloom from mid-November to late-January. One of the most common questions I received regarding the Christmas cactus plant is how do you get it to bloom after the first year? Most all of us know this particular plant as a houseplant which rarely ever makes it outside. With that being said, it will typically stay at the same temperature whether it is summer time or winter time. The trick to getting Christmas cactus in bloom is to simulate the original growing conditions to where there are originally from.

Starting in June, move your Christmas cacti outside to a shady spot. Provide enough water so that the soil is able to dry out between waterings. By mid-September, let them dry even more between waterings. The next step is cool weather. Flower buds are initiated with cool night time temperatures around 55°F. Once the flower buds start to open up feel free to bring the cactus inside so that everyone will be able to enjoy! Also, make a note that they are easily propagated by stem cuttings. Growing plants from stem cuttings make for an excellent children’s activity.

Venison Shepard’s Pie

- Meat Filling -

In a medium pot heat the olive oil and add the onions, carrots and garlic.

Stir and cook for 2 minutes. Add the venison, salt and pepper and cook till the meat is fully cooked. Add the chicken stock, corn, and peas. Stir to incorporate. Cook for 2 minutes, and add tomato paste, flour, all herbs and Worcestershire sauce. Cook and stir for 1 minute. Taste to adjust seasoning.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In another medium pot bring enough water that covers the potatoes to a boil. Add a little salt to the water, about 1 teaspoon.

When the potatoes become tender, about 5 minutes on a rapid boil, drain.

Return to the pot with fire off and add the milk, butter, salt and pepper. Use a potato masher and make smooth. Fold in the egg yolk. In a baking spread a very little olive oil on the bottom, and add the venison mixture. Spread gently the potato mixture and make sure all the ends are covered. Bake for 25 minutes or until potatoes have a golden crusty top. Let rest for 10 minutes and Serve Hot! Ingredients: 1 ½ pounds venison, ground • 1 cup onion, chopped 1 tablespoon garlic, minced • 2 carrots, diced small • 1 teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon fresh black pepper • 2 tablespoons flour • 2 teaspoons tomato paste • 1 cup chicken stock • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire • 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped • ½ cup corn kernels ½ cup frozen English peas • 1 ½ lbs. Russet potatoes, cubed ½ cup whole milk • ¾ teaspoon sea salt • ¼ teaspoon fresh black pepper 1 egg yolk
