You would think that a man who could grope and grasp everything within his power might have an “ah hah!” moment in which he realizes that just a little backing off from a sophomoric approach in seeking the world’s most powerful position would give him a better than even chance to win. But no. Not even against the most unpopular Democratic candidate ever and the least trustworthy, nominee Hillary Clinton, could Donald Trump do anything to shut down what appears to be his destiny with potential disaster next month. Two debates, two debacles for the man who would be President….his way. Never mind that putting Hillary Clinton in office will mean four more years of unpopular legislation and the rampant continued government-fueled liberalization of the United States. Nothing means more to Donald Trump than getting even, than getting in the last word, than discovering new ways to trash any chance that more conservative Americans could find relief from the overstepping arm of government and the runaway political correctness that threatens to make cowards of us all. The office party bully has all but thrown away any opportunity of securing the bully pulpit of being POTUS by being POUT US. Both of these so-called leaders scare the hell out of me and makes me wonder if I should learn Chinese and Russian now and avoid the rush or pray that we can survive until the end of 2020, when just maybe we will have two or three candidates that will limit November’s survivor to being a one term cipher.

The final debate last week, moderated by Chris Wallace of Fox News, was the most even-handed and well-orchestrated from the moderator’s dais of the three debates held. Most of the first half of the exercise actually sounded like a debate until the gloves came off in the second half over Russia’s and Vladimir Putin’s role in the 2016 Presidential election, open border language and issues and the continuing mantras over Donald Trump’s views towards women and Hilary Clinton’s inability to implement policy and just talk a good game. The fact that neither candidate shook or offered to shake hands at the end of the debate and Trump’s refusal to state he would abide by the results of the November 8th election were firsts in what has become the most childish, reticent and untrustworthy Presidential campaign in the modern era.

There is a chance Trump could win, diverting a Clinton pogrom. But what about Trump really makes you feel that this man can accomplish anything as President? Cabinet meetings will be a contentious exercise each week. Advisors will have to risk being shot by the Secret Service in order to get Trump to shut up long enough to actually hear someone else’s more educated, more realistic, more structured points of view. If you like train wrecks, get ready for a series of derailments with Trump. No, I will not vote for Hillary. She is a calculating liar who will make sure the Supreme Court becomes a conduit for her view of today’s world, not a court that takes its direction from the Constitution and Bill of Rights, which transcends “today’s” points of view. Many times today’s POV changes tomorrow for the worse.

Clinton’s evasiveness will thinly mask her efforts to rewrite much of what makes America America. Her train wrecks will actually knock America off the track and could be much worse than Trump’s in the long run and she has vast experience at creating political train wrecks. Neither one should be a porter, let alone an engineer on the American train headed to tomorrow. I can only hope that this country can survive the next four years.

Washington is full of selfish, self-serving, bloated bureaucrats and politicians who care little for what happens outside of the District or their own home towns. Somewhere among the 290 million Americans in our 50 states and scattered territories are a few well-qualified men or women (or transgendered - can’t forget them) souls who could lead this country as an adult, a statesperson, a compassionate human with a backbone and a strong sense of history and tradition. Find them before it’s too late. It’s too late this election cycle. Either we get The Hair or The Heretic. What a choice.

What this election cycle may produce is the first realistic third party emergence in our history. Both Democrats and Republicans count their seven to nine-figure incomes every week and socialize instead of lead. It’s past time for a more realistic political movement to take hold - one that will retain the necessary social achievements of the past fifty years while reinforcing the legal rights of the people. Let the middle class have the voice this country needs desperately. Ease the pressures of overtaxation, of over-insurance, of unrealistic social and peer demands on our children. Let parents return to raising children, not enabling them as equals at the age of six or seven. Let the schools teach the 3 R’s, not the mantra of socialism. It’s so much to ask for a self-absorbed nation that is becoming more childish every year. But it is a path we need to take before everyone crashes while texting, helicoptering their children or spending their lives hating someone or some group. Lose the tolerant, loving, patriotic, hard-working, spiritual middle class and you lose this nation. It’s closer to happening than it’s ever been.

Fall Blooming Wildflowers

Whether you are driving down the highway, walking down a nature trail, or just enjoying some family time in the backyard, the beauty of Mother Nature can be found all around us. The spring and fall seasons provide us with a multitude of blooming flowers and fruiting bushes that can light up the natural landscape. The most common plants seen blooming this season are golden rods (Solidago spp.). The plants are tall and slender, reaching heights between five and eight feet tall. They are easily identified by their WILL AFTON golden yellow flower spikes at the ends of the main stems. Yellow is one of the main colors of our fall blooming wildflowers because another common flower seen is the swamp sunflower (Helianthus angustifolia). It also is a larger growing type that will get about six feet tall. Switching things up is wild ageratum or blue mist flower (Conoclinium coelestinum). A smaller plant that grows up to three feet tall that produces small bunches of tiny blooms that are blue in color. Growing even smaller are several varieties of aster (Aster spp.) that produce white, lavender, or pink daisy like flowers. Sometimes it’s not the flowers of a plant that provide us with color. The American beauty berry (Calicarpa americana) is known for producing reddish purple berry along its stems this time of year. Another good berry producer is hollies. Female plants of yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) and american holly (Ilex opaca) produce red berries during the fall and winter. This is just scratching the surface because I could list a lot more. Let me know what you find and we can add it to the list.

Tis the season for Mirlitons It’s almost that time of year again. You know time for mirliton salad, shrimp and mirliton casserole, seafood stuffed mirlton, and even pickled mirlitons to enjoy the following spring. Mirlitons are starting to come ripen now and will continue through the end of November. A member of the gourd family, curcurbitaceae, mirlitons have a long history in and around the New Orleans area. Known as chayote squash to many it also goes by the term vegetable pear in the United States and mirliton locally in south Louisiana. The earliest known records suggest that mirlitons were grown in New Orleans dating back to 1867, almost 150 years ago. It was popular to grow mirlitons in the backyard until the effects of hurricanes Katrina and later Gustav. The storms almost wiped out the original local varieties and now with the abundance of imported chayotes at local supermarkets, local production is not as common as it once was.

However, if you look hard enough you can still find somebody in the neighborhood who still grows a small plot. Every now and then my phone rings with questions on how to start a plant, where to find a local variety, when to harvest, and how to store seed. With the harvest season fast approaching, now is the best time to acquire mirlitons to cook with and to save a few to grow next year. The best way to save mirliton seeds (we typically refer to mirliton seeds as the whole fruit because both are needed when starting a new plant) is to save a couple of fruits from harvest. Store them in a dark, cool place for the winter. A common method is to keep them in a shoebox or small cardboard box and place it in a closet. Southshore growers can plant it December but Northshore growers should wait later because of frost and freeze damage.

You can plant the mirliton seed in a pot to keep protected until cool weather passes. Place the fruit into the soil at a 45° angle with the large end facing down. Leave the top of the fruit exposed with filling in with soil. Cover with a nice layer of mulch to help protect it from late cool weather. As the plant grows make sure there is a fence or trellis for it to grow on. Mirlitons are very aggressive growers and will need some space to be fully productive. Water and fertilize as needed during the growing season while keeping an eye out for foliar diseases. A fungicide treatment with chlorothalonil may be needed during months with excessive rainfall. Flowering and fruiting will start in Late August and September and continue into Early December, where you can start the whole process over again. Start asking around the neighborhood and at local farmers’ markets to find a mirliton or two to start your knew gardening project.

Tony’s Take The 2016 World Series could go down as the greatest historical series ever.

In 1908, the Titanic had not been built or designed. There were no child labor laws, there were only 46 states, there was no radio, talking movies… in fact, no movies at all. Manned flight was five years old, automobiles about the same, women couldn’t vote, no labor unions, no mob, cocaine was sold over the counter, there was no income tax, the country was on the gold standard, my mother was born. And it was the last time the Chicago Cubs won the World Series. 1945. World War II ended. I was not even one years old. Franklin Delano Roosevelt died. The atomic bomb was dropped twice on Japan. Berlin and Germany were divided. The Baby Boomers began to be born. Color television and computers were in their infancy. There were no ice makers, microwave ovens, panty hose, disposable razors, disposable diapers. Segregation ruled the South. And the Chicago Cubs made their last appearance in the World Series, losing to Detroit, the team they beat in 1907 and in 1908 to become world champions. 1948. The Marshall Plan helped keep Berlin supplied when Communist Russia put pressure on the city. Rock and roll hadn’t been invented. Elvis was 13 years old. Harry S. Truman was elected to a full term as President. The Korean War was two years away. Joe Dimaggio and Ted Williams were still playing baseball. Babe Ruth died. And the Cleveland Indians won their last World Series. against the Boston Braves (now in Atlanta), in the first televised World Series.

In 1997, the Cubs began the year 0 and 14 and the coldest World Series game ever played (38 degrees) was on October 22nd, in Cleveland. Cleveland lost that series to the Atlanta Braves, the only World Series win for the Atlanta franchise and both team’s last appearances in the fall classic.

The Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians are two of the original 16 major league teams that began in 1901. These teams even predate the New York Yankees, who actually began as the Baltimore Orioles and were purchased in 1903 and moved to New York, where they began as the Highlanders. What I’m getting at is this series is the most historical in professional sports history, one where the combatants have been playing for 116 years and haven’t ever met in a championship series. Neither team has been in the Series for at least 19 years. The Cubs have had to overcome jinxes and collapses, interfering fans and an ineptness that makes the old New Orleans Saints look like the best team in sports. The Indians have had to overcome two movie comedies about them (Major League and Major League II) and the lack of a true superstar since the days of Rocky Colavito in the 1950’s and Kenny Lofton in the 1980’s. Now both teams are on the cusp of history, The Cubs are the better team, with baseball’s best infield, great overall pitching and defense and perhaps the best manager in baseball. Cleveland is an overachieving team with average players but a bullpen even better than the Cubs or Dodgers and solid starting pitching. This team doesn’t make mistakes. The sentiment will be for the Cubs to win for the first time in 108 years but its been 68 years for the Indians. This may be the best World Series ever for pure baseball fans to watch. There are few Cleveland haters out there and except for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Cubs don’t have any natural baseball enemies. No revenge factor in this series. Just the awesomeness of watching two teams who play the game the way it was meant to be played with incredibly loyal fans, wonderful old venues and fun for all. In an era of overpaid, pampered, politically active athletes, isn’t it wonderful that we can have a series like this? Savor the rest of October and early November and hope this Series goes seven games. We won’t see another of its kind in our lifetime.

Back home, the LSU Tigers are starting to show us that they can beat the Alabama Crimson Tide at home next week, if they continue to progress as they have under Ed Orgeron. A potent Ole Miss team had nothing left in the tank in the second half against LSU as the Tigers dominated a strong SEC team in one half the way they were expected to do in the beginning of the season.

Leonard Fournette put on a running show never experienced in Tiger Stadium with three monster runs for touchdowns and 284 yards on well under 20 carries. A defensive touchdown was taken away when a fumble was overturned by instant replay in the third quarter. This team may now have the attitude to compete and beat Alabama on November 5th, especially with the loss of ‘Bama All-American Eddie Jackson in the secondary and as a punt returner. Both teams are a quarterback injury away from an offensive disaster. ‘Bama’s propensity of turning defensive turnovers into touchdowns has never been done at this frequency before but the Tide hasn’t faced an offensive line as strong or experienced as LSU’s this year and if the line can keep ‘Bama’s defensive line at bay, the Tigers could win. If they do, they still need Auburn to lose one more SEC game and the Tigers win out against Arkansas, Florida and Texas A&M to win the SEC West and most likely the SEC Championship and a possible invitation to the four-team championship round. That slate looks like the winner of the Michigan/Ohio State game, Washington, Clemson and one more. LSU would have two losses but they came under Les Miles, which shouldn’t count since Miles did everything in his power to ensure the Tigers lost both games. Unlike his 2007 team, where they overcame two triple-overtime losses and the collapse of three teams ahead of them during the last week of the regular season, this LSU team is more solid, has more depth and more importantly, has a head coach that players truly love, UNDERSTAND and can trust to do the things that make winning a distinct possibility. Meanwhile, Tom Herman’s resume’ has been taking a bit of a hit lately, especially with his Houston team’s second loss last weekend to a mediocre to average SMU squad weeks after Herman ridiculed SMU’s football abilities to win more than six games in a season. Houston’s postseason is now dropped to a second tier bowl and Herman’s stock as a head coach also has taken a hit. This is good news for Ed Orgeron, who, if he wins out, will have accomplished one of the most impressive seven-game runs in LSU history, rivaling the 2011 season when Oregon, West Virginia and Florida went down, followed by Auburn and Alabama in games number eight and nine. Don’t be surprised if Orgeron stays on in Baton Rouge to see what his recruits can do a couple of years down the road. They certainly won’t be leaving Tigertown in droves as they had during the past six seasons under Les Miles, especially quarterbacks, receivers and defensive linemen and linebackers.
