At this point, only ‘Bama, Clemson and perhaps Michigan have the ability to stay with the Tigers.

The disaster lurking in Columbus, Ohio, came to fruition last weekend against Purdue and Ohio State will probably lose to Michigan for the first time in a while as well. Notre Dame’s public relations and easy schedule have them ranked higher than they should be. If the Irish get into the playoffs, they will be the odd team out right away. The Tigers likely would face a rematch with Georgia or Florida in the SEC Championship. If LSU beats Alabama, look for a bit more separation than in 2011. This team has grit and plenty to prove and with no Les Miles to water down the psychological efforts it takes to win against the Tide, the Tigers could be talking about a win by more than just a field goal. Remember 2003? No one had as many All Americans and major trophy winners in one season than Oklahoma, which swept most major award that year, And Oklahoma lost to Kansas State on a neutral field and to LSU for the national championship.

Over the next several weeks, Americans will be going to the polls in the most eagerly anticipated and consequential mid-term election in our nation’s history. Voters will decide whether to continue the President’s agenda which includes cutting regulations and taxes, boosting our military, renegotiating our trade deals, and focusing on border security.

This agenda has produced incredible economic results in less than two years. This week, the World Economic Forum rated the United States as the most competitive economy among the 140 countries ranked. This is the first time since 2008 that the United States has topped this important list. This report follows an amazing list of positive economic indicators in recent weeks. The United States is enjoying an incredibly low unemployment rate, robust economic growth, and stellar consumer and small business confidence. It is a great time to be living in our country.

In a usual election, the party responsible for such good economic times would have a tremendous lead in the polls. Unfortunately, in our country today, the Democrats are leading in generic congressional surveys and most pollsters predict a “blue wave” on November 6.

According to the so-called experts, the real question is not whether the Democrats will win the mid-term elections, but what will be their margin of victory?

The Democrats are leading because of the powerful institutions that support them, namely, the media, Hollywood, academia, government bureaucracies and special interest groups. In addition, Democrats have significant backing from the wealthiest Americans. For example, there has been a tremendous outpouring of campaign cash flowing into the coffers of Democratic candidates and political action committees from billionaires such as George Soros, Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Bloomberg and Tom Steyer.

One beneficiary of this largess is U.S. Congressman Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who is challenging U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) in the most high-profile race in the country. Incredibly, O’Rourke has raised over $35 million more than Cruz, the incumbent.

While O’Rourke and his fellow Democratic Party candidates have the right amount of money, they do not have the right message in this election. O’Rourke and other Democratic candidates have pledged to pursue impeachment charges against President Trump even though it is not a popular issue with most Americana voters. To make matters worse, U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) promised to reopen an investigation into Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh if Democrats regain control of the U.S. Senate. This vow enraged U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (RSC) who demanded that all Democratic Senate candidates answer whether they support “more humiliation, degrading treatment of this fine man, are you for continuing this debacle?”

It will be even scarier if the Democrats take control of the House of Representatives. Such an outcome would result in half-baked liberal House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) becoming Speaker once again, a truly nightmarish scenario. With Democrats in control, all “Deep State” investigations into the activities of corrupt Department of Justice officials will end and the entire Trump agenda will be immediately halted. Democrats will work to rescind the tax cuts, push for a massive expansion of Obamacare, and fight all efforts to enhance border security. In fact, Pelosi has vowed to oppose any real attempt to build a border wall and called President Trump’s interest in the security project a “manhood issue.”

Along with harassing the President and stopping his agenda and investigating Justice Kavanaugh again, the Democrats have nothing to offer but the expansion of big government.

There is no message of hope from the Democrats of 2018 only hate. The party has devolved from the inspiring rhetoric of President John F. Kennedy in the 1960’s to today’s calls for harassment of Republicans from U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA).

While Bill Clinton was “The Man from Hope” Arkansas and Barack Obama offered voters “hope and change,” Democratic Party leaders today do not engage in that kind of rhetoric. Instead of inspiration, Democratic voters have been encouraged to participate in nasty aggression toward Republicans.

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder urged Democrats to “kick” Republicans, while Hillary Clinton claimed that Democrats should no longer be civil to Republicans. Sadly, unhinged left-wing activists have followed this advice and Republican elected officials, candidates and campaign workers have been attacked throughout the country.

A responsible political party would notice this disturbing trend and make an announcement condemning this brutality while encouraging supporters to remain non-violent. Sadly, no such messages have been forthcoming from Democrats in 2018, leading to the conclusion that hate is the only real message they want to convey.

Fall is a beautiful time of year in Louisiana. The daytime temperatures are cooler and the colors in the landscape are gorgeous. Everything seems to slow down as we approach the end of the year, even the lawn grass.

All of this sounds wonderful but actually is a perfect combination of environmental factors that favor the development of large patch disease in warm season turfgrasses like centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass.

Lawns that have a history of large patch disease will soon start showing symptoms again, if not already, as rains start to become more frequent.

Will Afton Look to apply a fungicide to help prevent the progression of large patch disease and to provide your lawn with much needed protection.

Large patch disease (also known as brown patch disease) is caused by the fungal organism, Rhizoctonia solani. This fungus is very abundant in South Louisiana. It waits for the perfect environmental conditions, a susceptible host and the right time before causing disease. St Augustinegrass is the most susceptible turfgrass to large patch disease but all warm-season turfgrasses (centipedegrass, bermudagrass, and zoysiagrass) can be affected. The disease is first observed as small irregular shaped patches of dead grass. When conditions are favorable, the patches can become quite large, especially if left untreated. The organism attacks the base of the leaf sheath, causing it to rot. It doesn’t necessarily kill the turfgrass. It results in thinned out areas of lawn that favor the growth of weedy, more tolerant species. The disease typically starts in areas with poor drainage where water can accumulate. Areas nears trees, shrubs, and fences are problematic due to reduced air movement that prevents the turf from drying out after irrigation or rainfall. The disease develops most rapidly when nighttime temperatures average between 60 and 75°F and daytime temperatures do not exceed 85 to 90°F. Once large patch disease begins in the lawn, manage it with a fungicide. Fall applications can help protect lawns, limit damage before the turfgrass goes dormant, and disease conditions become unfavorable. Environmental conditions will dictate the number of applications needed. In most cases, I recommend two applications to provide the best control. Fungicides can come in dry or liquid forms. For active large patch infestations, use a liquid version if possible. Dry granular fungicides are still effective but remember that they must be watered in it order to be activated.

Most of the fungicides available to homeowners are systemic fungicides, meaning that they are taken up by the plant and work from the inside out. Look for products with the active ingredients such as azoxystrobin (Scott’s DiseaseEx), myclobutanil (Fertilome F-Stop, Spectracide Immunox Multi-Purpose Fungicide), and propiconazole (BioAdvanced Fungus Control for Lawns, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II). Take note of what product is applied on the first application. It is important to rotate active ingredients when treating for large patch disease because of resistance issues. If propiconazole was used in the first application then look to find a product with myclobutanil or azoxystrobin to use in a second application. Always remember to read and follow all label instructions when applying any pesticides. When used in accordance with the label, these fungicides are safe to use on all home lawns.

HOPE St Tammany Animal Resource Team’s rescued dogs were the guests of honor at a Halloween event held Saturday, October 20, at Tractor Supply in Covington. The event was both an adoption event and a fundraiser for START pets. There was a pet costume contest, pet pictures, trick or treating for pets and their owners, and a sale of baked treats. The event was a great sucess and lots of fun.
