Anyone wanting to supply that to this group of pretty boy Los Angelenos please step up. Like in 1962, it was wonderful to watch the Dodger faithful bang their heads against the seawall of the Pacific as the Giants beat them in a post-season one-and-done on a Harvey Kuenn triple. That was baseball. This team, they play metrics and logistics, caving in to the b.s overwhelming professional baseball for the past 20 years. The hell with a guy’s W.A.R…..can he GO to war when it’s necessary?

I don’t think the Dodgers like conflict and Vegas probably will agree in the future. Happy postseason, Dodgers. You dodged a head-on conflict yet once again. Fernando, Drysdale, Hershiser, Podres, Roseboro, Howard… the list goes on and on. It’s not even satisfying to watch any more. It’s pathetic.

Words to GREAUX by SASANQUAS OFFER COLOR DURING THE FALL SEASON Most people, when they think of camellias, imagine the large rose-like blooms of the old garden, camellias (Camellia japonica) that dominate the landscape during late winter and early spring. However, several other species of camellia are grown in landscapes across the region. A common species grown in Louisiana is the sasanqua (C. sansanqua).

They are evergreen flowering shrubs that range in heights and have different growing habits. Typically, they are smaller growing plants than C. japonica. They produce smaller leaves, giving them a finer texture Will Afton in the landscape. Like old garden camellias, sasanquas prefer a partial shade location but they differ in that they can tolerant full sun. They prefer a well-drained acidic soil somewhere between a pH of 5.5 and 6.5 similar to other well-known southern shrubs like azaleas and gardenias.

Sasanquas have few pest problems that are easy to control if identified early and appropriate control measures are taken. As with most evergreen plants, scale insects are a common problem.

These insects have sucking type mouthparts and can be found feeding on the undersides of leaves. Most gardeners notice black sooty mold growing on the topsides of leaves. This is because the scale insects secrete “honey dew” as they feed and it drips onto the leave leaves below. The black sooty mold then grows on these honey dew covered surfaces. Obtain control by using a systemic insecticide in combination with a few applications of horticultural oil to keep your camellia free and clear of these problems.

Root rot, caused by a water mold pathogen, phytopthera, can also be problemat at times, especially in areas with poor drainage and water logged soil conditions. The best way to prevent this problem is to choose a well-drained location for your new planting and to avoid excessive irrigation. Mix in organic material like peat moss or compost with heavier soils with a high clay content. In low areas with no surface contour, it is advisable to build raised planting beds by using a garden soil product. Garden soils are made up of a mixture of organic mulches and provide excellent drainage.

Because of their popularity and stamina in Louisiana landscapes, you will find many different sasanqua cultivars for sale at garden centers and plant nurseries. Some of the tallest growing cultivars can reach heights near fifteen tall. The cultivar ‘Alabama Beauty’ is one of the earliest bloomers and has beautiful rosey-red flowers. ‘Pink Snow’ is another larger growing cultivar but it produces lovely soft pink flowers. ‘Leslie Ann’ has been promoted as a Louisiana Super Plant due to its outstanding performance and it produces a flower with white petals and pink edges.

‘Setsugekka’ is another taller growing cultivar but it produces a pure flower. For those looking for a smaller growing option look at ‘Stephanie Golden’. It produces a hot pink flower and stays around five to six feet tall to satisfy those smaller spaces. These are not the only choices you will see. Check out your local garden center to see what is available in your area.

Unfortunately often we cannot understand what they are trying to tell us. Our volunteers try, using what we know, to come up with a story for each one of them. What we know about Latte is that she was turned in to a shelter by a family who said she had been living in their neighborhood and no one claimed her. They thought she had had a litter but no one knew where the kittens were. So we think it is very likely that Latte’s owner, realizing that she was pregnant and not wanting to be bothered with the kittens, abandoned her in an area far from their own. That took care of their problem but caused a problem for other people. Her kittens may have been taken in by someone, or they may have been killed by predators. Her owner who should have had her spayed by time she was 4 months old, was apparently not concerned about that. Latte became a START cat when we were contacted by the shelter and asked to get her a foster home. We were told how playful and friendly she was. Latte likes people, but she really loves other cats, especially active, playful ones. After being fostered in a volunteer’s home, Latte became available for adoption. She loves attention, but is not used to being picked up and carried around, which many small children love to do. For that reason we recommend that Latte go to a home with older children or adults only.
