Paint the Town with Sasanquas

October brings with it not only a sense of fall time temperatures but also the beginning of the blooming season for sasanqua camellias. Most people, when they think of camellias, imagine the large rose like blooms of the old garden camellias, Camellia japonica, that show dominance in the landscape during late winter and early spring. However, there are several other species of camellia that are grown in landscapes across the country. A very common species grown in Louisiana is the C. sasanqua but we just call them sasanquas. They are evergreen flowering shrubs that WILL AFTON range in heights and have different growing habits. Like old garden camellias, sasanquas prefer a partial shade location but they will grow in full sun. They prefer a well-drained acidic soil somewhere between a pH of 5.5 and 6.5 similar to other well-known southern shrubs like azaleas and gardenias.

Sasanquas have a few pest problems that are fairly easy to control if identified early and appropriate control measures are taken. As with most evergreen plants, scale insects can show up from time to time.

These insects have sucking type mouthparts and can be found feeding on the undersides of leaves. Most gardeners will typically see black sooty mold growing on the tops of leaves. This is due to the fact that as the scale insects feed they drop “honey dew” onto the leave leaves below. The black sooty mold will then grow on these honey dew covered surfaces. Control using a systemic insecticide in combination with a few applications of horticultural oil to keep your camellia free and clear of these problems. Root rot caused by a pathogen named phytopthera can also be an issue. The best way to prevent this problem is to choose a well-drained location for your new planting and to avoid excessive irrigation.

Because of their popularity and stamina in Louisiana landscapes, you will find many different cultivars for sale at garden centers and plant nurseries. Some of the tallest growing cultivars can reach heights near fifteen tall. The cultivar ‘Alabama Beauty’ is one of the earliest bloomers and has beautiful rosey-red flowers. ‘Pink Snow’ is another larger growing cultivar but it produces lovely soft pink flowers. The ‘Leslie Ann’ cultivar has been promoted as a Louisiana Super Plant due to its outstanding performance and it produces a flower with white petals and pink edges.

‘Setsugekka’ is another taller growing cultivar but it produces a pure flower. For those looking for a smaller growing option look at ‘Stephanie Golden’. It produces a hot pink flower and stays around five to six feet tall to satisfy those smaller spaces. These are not the only choices you will see. Make sure to get out to your local garden center to see what is available in your area.

Start Harvesting Pecans Recently, pecans have started falling from trees on the Northshore. You should start collecting pecans as soon as they hit the ground. Don’t let the squirrels and other wildlife beat you to it. Pecans left on the ground for too long, especially in a wet climate, may begin to rot. Once harvested, you can start cracking and shelling. Shelled pecans should be gathered and placed into plastic, air-tight bags to be frozen for later use. If packaged properly, pecans will retain their flavor and texture for up to one year. For those looking to add pecan trees into their landscape look for cultivars that are resistant to pecan scab, the biggest limiting factor to production in Southeast Louisiana. The recommended cultivars for our area include: ‘Candy’, ‘Elliot’, ‘Sumner’, ‘Melrose’, ‘Caddo’, ‘Oconee’ and ‘Jackson’. One important consideration to make when purchasing a pecan tree for your home landscape is to make sure that it is a grafted plant. Seedling pecans can take up to fifteen years before it is mature and can start producing flowers. A grafted tree can help cut this time in half. It is not uncommon for a grafted pecan tree to start producing nuts in three to four years after planting.

FROM A ZERO TO AN “O”, TIGER FOOTBALL IS BACK

It took God six days to create Heaven and Earth and on the seventh day, He rested. It took Bebe’ six days to create heaven on earth for the LSU football program and on the seventh day, he kicked butt. The excitement couldn’t have been much more palpable, the crowd much bigger or the weather much better as the LSU Tigers began to show why Les Miles should stay around football (but not LSU) only as a recruiter. The gravel-voiced Ed Orgeron (Bebe’ to his family and friends), now the underpaid head coach of the LSU Tigers, used common sense, football intelligence and a big dose of timeliness and urgency to transform a group of head cases and unhappy players into a force that will be reckoned with the rest of the 2016 season.

On our way to the stadium, we passed a tailgating group raising money “to help poor old Les Miles pay his mortgage.” The guys told me they had raised $1.30 about three hours before kickoff. That’s about the going rate for a habitual, overpaid liar who now finds himself defiant over his so-called coaching legacy and still unable to string together enough comprehensive English to even get a job as a counter server at a fast food restaurant. Miles told ESPN he might go out in his yard before the LSU/Missouri game and sweat a little. Miles never sweated in 11 plus years at the helm of the LSU football program; what made him think he remembers how to sweat? Miles claims, if I got the translation correct, that his only concern was to make sure his players did well in school. Les, the folks whose job it is to do that don’t make $4.35 million a year. And I would bet that these five-figures a year professionals would do a much better job coaching these guys on the football field than you, because they probably understand with a clock is used for, what a commitment to change is and what a promise is. Miles didn’t even know what time kickoff was for the Missouri game; “”around 7 o’clock, I think those Tigers come on.

I’ll be right there (on my couch).” Wow! Only 30 minutes off on that one, Miles. Miles also admitted, in an incredible interview on ESPN with Tom Rinaldi, that if he had one play to define his career, it would have been the final one against Auburn, where the clock ran out before the LSU Tigers could snap the ball. That was the play that broke the camel’s back that led to the firing of Les Miles. Listen to this explanation of why he felt that way: “If I had one play define who I am, I’d take that one. And here’s why. Because there was nothing left. There was not a time on the clock. Everything was running down. Took a snap. We rolled to its right and fired a ball in an end zone that wins the game. If that play is allowed, we win the game. I’ll take that play. I’ll take the very last play that we had. A group of men that could not be denied and except for time, should have won the game.” Except for time, I would own every track record in the world. Except for clock mismanagement (your job Miles) the team WOULD have won the game. Except for stubborn and audacious play calling that contradicted your promise to ultimately keep your job, the Tigers WOULD have won at Lambeau Field last month against Wisconsin. Except for sitting on your butt for a month and exiling quarterback Jarrett Lee to football purgatory, the Tigers’ MIGHT have beaten Alabama twice in 2011 and won the National Championship.

Except for….well, the list goes on and any AD looking for an innovative, flexible coach will place your resume’ on the “thumbs down” pile on his or her desk. Because you can’t fix stupid and stubborn with a great recruiting demeanor, especially when a year or two later, a bunch of those recruits leave, not because of competition but because of being ignored or misinformed about what their role could have been at LSU. Yes, it happens at most schools but not with the frequency or talent drain Miles’ tenure created. Miles reportedly will remain as a $14,000 per month spokesman for Raisin’ Cane, the Baton Rouge based fast food company. That makes sense, since Miles has been raisin’ Cain around the LSU football program for at least the past five years and in some cases, longer. Maybe he can pay his mortgage out of that handsome stipend. Or go visit his college-age children in North Carolina and other venues, where they chose to attend rather than stay home and…?

Hats off to Steve Ensminger, a former LSU quarterback in a two-quarterback system with David Woodley back in the late 1970’s, who is now the Offensive Coordinator under Orgeron. Ensminger brought offensive sets and play calling not only never even imagined by Les Miles but not even implemented by Nick Saban or Bill Arnsbarger, the two best previous coaches before Miles and after Charles McLendon retired at the end of the 1979 season. Three receptions by a tight end? Two receptions from a flanked position by a fullback? Using the middle of the field almost exclusively for passing? Using progressions in the passing game? Opening up the running game with the passing game? Using a one-back set in the “ace” formation, an old favorite that Miles probably never used during his tenure? Inserting a converted defensive back, Russell Gage, into a two, three and four receiver set several times during the game? Fans were forced to watch the game and many seemed puzzled that they couldn’t call 95% of the plays from their seats even before the huddle was broken. The only boos from the stands came with the tussles between teams on two or three separate occasions, which led to the disqualification of two Missouri players and one LSU player. Oh. Miles also told ESPN that he might have even have to call some plays prior to LSU’s game against Missouri. “I’m ready to call plays.” was Miles’ comment. Uh, Les. You lost your job because you WEREN’T ready to call plays. Did you also want to close the barn doors after the horses ran off? Don’t worry, Les. Every LSU fan knows your plays by heart. And most of them will be able to forget about them in due time. Time. Ain’t it funny how time slips away? That’s one of twelve classic song titles dedicated to you, Mr. Miles, by me, Publisher Tony Onellion. Here they are, as my parting gift. It’s not that I don’t like you. It’s like Billy Crystal’s comment to Clint Eastwood during the Academy Awards a few years back, when Crystal commented on Eastwood’s attempts at singing in a couple of his movies - ‘Clint, don’t sing no more!’ “Les, don’t coach football no more.”

Get a job mentoring young men and do what you can do best. And thank your lucky stars you had this opportunity.

The remainder of this column was supposed to be about the Florida game. However, due to the reluctance of the Florida Athletic Director to reach a practical compromise to relocate the game’s venue or time and day in Gainesville or reschedule the game by canceling a non-conference game on a common weekend for both Florida and LSU, the SEC ruled that the game would be postponed or cancelled (take your choice) because of Hurricane Matthew. Period. This was more a case of selfishness
