Fall Has Come To Pearl River Happy fall, all! Fall has indeed arrived in Pearl River. While fall activities may feel different here in the Deep South, the display of activities is in full force with pumpkin patches, hay rides, trunk or treats, football games, bonfires and elections.

Another main event that takes place in fall is our “National Night Out Against Crime” Community Block Party. This will be our 3rd annual town-wide block party in celebration of the “National Night Out Against Crime”. This event is hosted By: Lora Cutrer by the PRPD and will be held on Oct. 12th in front of the Pearl River Police Department.

This free family event will begin at 6pm and will consist of refreshments, games, face painting, child finger printing and more. The PRPD motorcycle and units along with Ochsner Flight Care Helicopter will be on display for the kids to explore. Fire District 11 will be there with their firetruck and smoke house as well. Your entire family is encouraged to come meet your local police and fire personnel. Other free fall actives include the 8th annual “Trunk or Treat” presented by Mirror Image. There will be games, prizes, cake smashing, costume contest, classic cars and much more.

This event will be held on Oct 26 at 6pm at 64167 Hwy 41. On Oct. 28 from 4pm-6pm, The Crossing Church will also have their annual “Trunk or Treat” in their parking lot located at 64379 Hwy. 41. They invite everyone to join in the fun.

What was worse, though, was the complete exposure of a lack of pass rush pressure from an LSU front three that has no real defensive end presence. Time and again Florida was able to pick apart the Tigers in the flat, around the flank, and sloppy tackling and lousy containment assured the Tigers of their first loss of the season.

Now it gets real. There is no silver lining on the defensive flank for this team and so we will probably have to gird up for at least two losses in the next four weeks with the nation’s two top teams coming into Tiger Stadium. This weekend its the Georgia Bulldogs, who aren’t as scary as Alabama but they are as talented and as well coached and the Tigers will have to pull one out of their backside to make this one even close by halftime.

The 3-4 defense of David Aranda is not working because the three up front linemen cannot perform effectively. Breiden Fehoko is by far the best there but Rashard Lawrence and Glen Logan cannot do the job they are charged to do and their backups aren’t nearly as talented.

No real outside speed cannot make up for a suddenly depleted linebacking corps, K’Lavon Chaisson and Jacob Phillips were out for the Florida game left most of the containment to Devin White and Michael Divinity Junior. The Tigers have linebackers but except for White they took last Saturday off. Florida doesn’t have defensive ends either, but their linebackers totally upstaged LSU. Joe Burrow threw his first two interceptions of the year but with the deplorable offensive line play, the Tigers are lucky he is still upright. The offense did show some toughness with its rushing in the fourth quarter and the classy act of Jonathan Giles, who was seen sporting a jersey with the previously unused #12 on it, having given up the unmagical #7 (for him).

Giles still is the slowest fast man I have ever witnessed on a football field and he certainly has not adjusted to the defensive pressures of the SEC secondaries but at least he contributed and didn’t play all that conservative, which he had done all year.

However, no one thought this team would be 5 and 1 after the first weekend in October and still have a decent chance of beating the Georgia Bulldogs who have had issues of their own.

The Bulldogs can recruit as well or better than Alabama and LSU but there still is only one Nick Saban and his “Process” remains the gold standard for college football dominance. If the Tigers survive Georgia, they will face a frustrated and physically battered Mississippi State team in Baton Rouge on the 20th. The prospect of beating these Bulldogs has gone beyond a toss-up as State has lost to Florida, Kentucky and Auburn for three in a row before they show up in Baton Rouge, not counting what they do this weekend. Color the Maroon and White “done” for this season, the SEC’s saddest story of 2018. And Dan Mullen: nice job for the second year in a row on the Tigers. You earned the win and it has given LSU pause to review some of their decisions moving forward.

THE TRUMP ECONOMIC MIRACLE By: Jeff Crouere The U.S. economy is the strongest in the world and it shows no signs of slowing down. On Friday, another incredible economic report was released as the September unemployment rate dropped to 3.7%, the lowest since 1969. Among Hispanics and Latinos, the unemployment rate was only 4.5%, the all-time lowest level in history, while among African Americans, the unemployment rate was 6.0%, near the record low.

Not only are people finding work, but Americans are earning more. Compared to September of 2017, wages increased 2.8%, while the typical work week remained steady at 34.5 hours.

While only 134,000 new jobs were created in September, the employment numbers for August were revised upward to 270,000. Thus, over the last year, an average of 201,000 new jobs were created each month.

With more jobs being created, fewer people need food stamps. Currently, over 39 million Americans are on food stamps, a decrease of 4 million since the beginning of the Trump presidency.

With consumer spending accounting for 70% of the overall economic activity, this is an important factor in why the economy is doing so well.

Fueled by tax cuts and the lifting of onerous regulations, businesses are hiring Americans in record numbers. The nation’s gross domestic product soared 4.2% in the last quarter, averaging more than 3% for the year, surpassing the highest total in any year of the Obama presidency.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, President Trump denounced onerous trade agreements as being unfair to the United States. He promptly withdrew our country from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. This week, after months of negotiations, President Trump announced a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada, updating the flawed NAFTA agreement. In response, the stock market hit record highs.

The new trade deal will also be a major boon for U.S. manufacturers. According to a new survey from the National Association of Manufacturers, 93% of members predict additional growth and over 91% are optimistic about the future. These results are among the very best the organization has recorded in its 20-year history.

Fortunately, the growth has been focused on the private sector. In the federal workforce, the Trump administration has trimmed 16,000 jobs since the beginning of the President’s term in January of 2017. While this is not a major decrease in a federal workforce of almost 3 million, it is certainly a step in the right direction.

It is hard to discount these economic success stories, even though the media that is 95% opposed to President Trump, tries to regularly ignore this good news. If the liberal media were objective and would publicize the positive economic reports, the President’s approval rating would be much higher. Instead, the media are constantly reporting on negative stories designed to harm the President’s political standing and his agenda.

With additional tax cuts, stronger trade deals and an enhanced effort to limit illegal immigration, the nation’s economy should continue to grow under President Trump’s policies over the next two years. The outlook through 2020 is amazingly strong according to Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome H. Powell. In a speech this week to the National Association of Business Economics, Powell said “This historically rare pairing of steady, low inflation and very low unemployment is a testament to the fact we remain in extraordinary times.”

The key to maintaining such “extraordinary times” will be for these positive economic policies to continue. Hopefully, American voters will recognize what is happening and reward the President by keeping the U.S. Congress under the control of the Republican Party in the mid-term elections.

Otherwise, America can get ready for the ugly prospect of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, impeachment hearings, an end to the “Deep State” investigations and an attempt to roll back the historic tax cuts. Sadly, Democrats have embraced socialism and this big government agenda is anathema to financial markets and will sidetrack our economic growth.

The stakes for our country and our economy could not be higher as we countdown the final few weeks until the mid-term elections. With the economy going so well, let’s hope American voters do not shift gears and empower politicians who espouse policies that have failed miserably both here and throughout the world.

As our warm season turfgrasses (st augustinegrass, centipedegrass, zoysiagrass, and bermudagrass) start to enter dormancy, many South Louisiana gardeners prefer to over seed their lawns with ryegrass in order to keep a nice carpet of green all winter long. I get asked all the time about whether or not over seeding with ryegrass is a recommended practice.

The answer is not as easy as you would think. The major disadvantage of intermixing a cool season and a warm season grass is competition Will Afton in the spring once the warm season grass comes out of dormancy. This can provide early season stress and may contribute to poor health. I would not recommend over seeding a stressed out lawn. I like to promote what I call “over-seeding with a purpose” or just having a reason other than just because. Some people like to over seed to keep the lawn attractive for family events and other outdoor activities. Some people like to spread some ryegrass seed over an area where digging had occurred to prevent erosion. Vegetable gardeners might even want to over seed the garden with ryegrass and use it as a cover crop if they want to tend to a fall garden.

If done with purpose, over seeding can be extremely beneficial in the landscape.

Most people will typically use ryegrass to over seed the lawn. Ryegrass is a popular cool season grass that will grow during the fall, winter, and early spring. You will find annual and perennial varieties for sale at the garden centers and feed stores this time of year. This usually refers to the plants life cycle but in the deep south both annual and perennial varieties will not make it through the summer time heat. The biggest difference between the two is that annual ryegrass will grow tall and has a lighter green color versus perennial ryegrass that grows shorter and has a deeper green color. Another difference between the two is price. Perennial ryegrass usually cost twice as much as annual varieties.

The first step in the process to over seed the lawn begins with mowing. You want to make a final pass with the lawn mower, cutting at the same height as would during the regular growing season. Apply seed at a rate of 5-10lbs per 1000ft using a broadcast or drop spreader. Go with the higher rate for a dense planting. Ryegrass does not spread like our warm season grasses.

It is described as a clump forming grass. Once you a have spread the seed you will need to apply a consistent amount of irrigation. Once the seedlings reach 1in tall you can adjust back to normal watering practices. You can add a fertilizer once your warm season grass gone completely dormant. This will require careful observation. Use 1lbs of Nitrogen for every 1000ft2. This would equate to either 7.5 lbs of 13-13-13 or 12.5 lbs of 8-8-8 fertilizer. Continue with regular mowing as needed throughout the remainder of the season.

FALL BLOOMING WILDFLOWERS Whether you are driving down the highway, walking down a nature trail, or just enjoying some family time in the backyard, the beauty of Mother Nature is found all around us. The spring and fall seasons provide us with a multitude of blooming flowers and fruiting bushes that can light up the natural landscape. The most common plants seen blooming this season are golden rods (Solidago spp.). The plants are tall and slender, reaching heights between five and eight feet tall.

The golden yellow flower spikes easily identify them. Yellow is one of the main colors of our fall blooming wildflowers because another common flower seen is the swamp sunflower (Helianthus angustifolia). It also is a larger growing type that will get about six feet tall. Switching things up is wild ageratum or blue mist flower (Conoclinium coelestinum). A smaller plant that grows up to three feet tall that produces small bunches of tiny blooms that are blue in color. Growing even smaller are several varieties of aster (Aster spp.) that produce white, lavender, or pink daisy like flowers. Sometimes it’s not the flowers of a plant that provide us with color. The American beauty berry (Calicarpa americana) is known for producing reddish purple berry along its stems this time of year. Another good berry producer is hollies. Female plants of yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) and american holly (Ilex opaca) produce red berries during the fall and winter. This is just scratching the surface because I could list a lot more. Next time you find yourself enjoying the landscape see what else you can add to the list.
