Tony’s Take 2019 IS PROVING TO BE A BANNER

FOOTBALL YEAR IN SOUTH LOUISIANA.

Those of us who depend on weekends to bring us our stress relief and enjoyment in the way of football have struck the Mother Lode this year. Let’s begin with Tulane, a team rarely mentioned in my writings because of my purple and gold-colored glasses. But the Green Wave is showing they might have the best team of this millennium with a solid offense and defensive squad and the ability to hold a lead or overcome a deficit. Their recent win at West Point shows this team can compete at the highest levels and should be taken seriously. Besides, with the prices of tickets in the Superdome and in Baton Rouge, it’s an affordable and family-oriented venue in the heart of residential New Orleans to take a few folks for a relatively few dollars and have a good time.

Skipping over the amateur bridge to the professional bridge brings us to the most important bridge in New Orleans this fall. That, of course, is the Teddy BRIDGEwater bridge, a man whose status as the highest paid backup quarterback in the NFL has played huge dividends for the New Orleans Saints. Since Drew Brees became Tom Thumb a few weeks ago, Bridgewater has become the go-to guy for the Saints, leading them to wins over the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in successive weekends. Heck, the security team at the Superdome may even have to ask #9 for his i.d. later this month as Bridgewater becomes more entrenched under center.

Bridgewater’s success has stirred the “Weird Al” Yankovich in me. In my defense, I was writing Yankovich-style songs when Al barely had curly hair. But his have been better and made a lot more money than mine. Now, the Tigers. Joe Burrow continues to rewrite the LSU passing records and the Tiger defense finally decided to begin a long overdue gelling against a very offensive minded Utah State team. It’s in the nick of time, with at least two more formerly injured defensive starters expected to play this week against Florida. It will be “GAME DAY” on the LSU campus Saturday as the number five Tigers and number seven Gators square off in perhaps the highest ranking showdown in their history. Florida has a new quarterback whose doing a great job and the strongest defense the Tigers have seen so far, perhaps even stronger than the Auburn team, who lost to Florida last week. The Tigers will be favored by a touchdown, perhaps more and the game is at night following the Texas/Oklahoma state fair shoot-out in Dallas during the day. LSU should win, but their scoring average definitely will be markedly deflated as the Tigers should rack up 35 points but perhaps no more.

Florida can’t keep up and the Tigers learned plenty watching Florida last week against Auburn. I predict LSU 35, Florida, 20.

LAWNCARE ADVICE FOR FALL

The fall season is an important time in the life your lawn grass. As the days get shorter and temperatures get cooler, the lawn will start to prepare itself for the oncoming dormant season. Eventually, growth will slow down before it goes completely dormant. Adjust your routine to help ensure that the lawn stays healthy during this process.

Let’s start with mowing. Keep mowing often enough to remove 1/3 of the grass plant each time. You also need to use a sharp mowing blade.

It’s usually this time of year, late in the summer season, where I start Will Afton seeing torn grass blades. Sharp blades will cut the grass but dull blades will tear. You can easily see a general browning in the lawn when dull blades are used. This is due to the torn leaves turning necrotic due to excessive tissue damage.

Be careful with fertilizers. Many companies will advertise “Winterizer” fertilizers this time of year but beware of adding any extra nitrogen after the first of September. Remember that nitrogen makes plants grow and lawns are naturally slowing down and preparing for dormancy.

Fertilizing too late in the year with a high nitrogen fertilizer is counterproductive.

Late nitrogen can spread lawn disease. Typical fall weather patterns are optimum for several lawn diseases including large patch (brown patch). In fact, you should be very observant in the fall so that lawn disease problems can be caught early. Large patch starts out as small dead areas that increase in size overnight especially during rainy periods or stretches of humid weather. Apply a fungicide that contain either of these active ingredients: azoxystrobin, propiconazole, myclobutanil. They are all labeled for use on turfgrass areas around the home.

Some of the trade names you will see in stores include: BioAdvanced Fungus Control, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II, Fertilome F-Stop, Green Light Fung-Away and Scott’s DiseaseX. Make sure to treat the entire yard to control the disease and prevent other areas from becoming infected.

Lastly, think about weed control. Soon there will be a whole new crop of cool season weeds that grow during the fall and winter months. Prevent cool season annual weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide now. A popular favorite is Dimension (dithiopyr). It can be found at local feed stores and garden centers under the name Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper II.

Canyon was found hiding under a truck in someone’s driveway. He had apparently been abandoned at the entrance to a subdivision where he had been seen hanging around, maybe waiting for his owner to come back for him. His owner never returned, but Canyon was lucky enough to be found by people who were determined to help him. They named him after the truck he hiding under, and they started working to teach him to walk on a leash and obey commands. Canyon is very smart and learns quickly. He has learned to retrieve and loves chasing tennis balls that he returns without delay.

Canyon’s rescuers think he is a 6 to 7 month old Carolina dog. They are hoping someone will adopt him and continue his training. Canyon has had his first shots and is scheduled to be neutered soon. He gets along great with adults and children, and loves playing with other dogs.
