Tony’s Take THOUGHTS ABOUT EARLY OCTOBER AND OUR AMERICAN CONDITION We are in the best season of the year. No bugs, no tornados, an occasional weak hurricane, relief from our usual hot, humid summers, football, the World Series, beginning (or this year, the end) of the NBA and college hoops, But the most giving tell of October is the weather, the sky, the air. It’s like Mother Nature has erased nearly all of the poisons we’ve put into our environment and we have an annual chance to experience the wonder of a month of clean, fresh, crisp air with matching days. And it ends with Halloween, which has become our second biggest holiday celebration after Christmas. Somewhere, somehow, Thanksgiving has been relegated to second string.

After Halloween, the march towards American greed begins in earnest, culminating in the watered-down season known as The Holidays. In America, the first week of November is being anticipated with bated breath as the baiting of conservative America continues by a group of extremists, manned by so-called educators, snowflake social misfits and hate-spewing politicians, businessmen and lobbyists. Surviving all that will take more than a $2.00 mask; it will take a life-changing introspect by hundreds of thousands of dissatisfied haters, malcontents and fantasy weavers who think there’s a better templet for freedom than the old, time-proven USA’s way of doing things.

Wrong! America’s way of doing things allows change through the years, maybe not always as fast as the aggrieved and ignored would like but progress nevertheless. Just examine your mindset as a young person and that same mindset as an adult. Certain things in your life have been viewed through a different prism as we continue as a country. Why would we want authoritative, nanny state control freaks to be given the keys to our Vehicle of Freedom?

Meanwhile, returning to the more serious subject of football, it has been a mixed venue for local teams. First, the New Orleans Saints have been trying to overcome crucial injuries as they return to a .500 record after four games. Mississippi won their first game as Lane Kiffin pulled out a one-point win in his second game. Miles away, Mike Leach’s Air Raid looked more like a Kamikaze attack as pathetic Arkansas found a way to win in Starkville as the Mississippi State Bulldogs had a huge meltdown after their historic win at LSU. Against Vanderbilt, LSU got its mojo back and its Myles Brennan model working the way Mississippi football fans thought it would after Brennan’s stellar high school career in Bay St, Louis. It was his second 330-plus yards game as a starter and his improvement was more than noticeable. Of course, LSU had Derrick Stingley back on the field following the first week’s scare over his health and that solidified the secondary as LSU looked much better not only following the Mississippi State fiasco but even better than their 66 to 38 win in Nashville last year, as the Tigers only gave up one score in a 41 to 7 win with the Tigers running out the clock in the Vanderbilt red zone.

Speaking of Myles, miles away in Lawrence, Kansas, the exiled former LSU football coach had his head handed to him once again as the pathetic Kansas Jayhawks, looking more and more like jaywalkers, got blown out one more time. That’s even a bigger story than the sudden collapse of Oklahoma, where Wunderkind Tom Herman has seen his team depart the Top 25 football poll following its second loss this year. The Sooners have lost to two State teams and what was once a proud defensive team has turned into a sieve. That’s three straight gut-wrenching losses for the boys from Norman, if you include the embarrassing beatdown in Atlanta last year by LSU, where they gave up 66 points and seven passing touchdowns in the first half to the Tigers and Joe Burrow. Burrow, as of this date, won his first NFL game and by doing so became one of a small fraternity to pass for at least 300 yards in his first three professional games. Burrow has been a bright spot for the Cincinnati Bengals and a real reason to watch them outside of their fan base for at least the past 20 years Next week’s issue will be the last that precedes this most important election year. The coarseness of American politics has never been more obvious and the quality of candidates more disappointing, given this country has over 270 million souls from which to choose a few civil, wise and empathetic leaders. Maybe we’ll see it in 2024 but millions of clothespins are being sold as America gets ready to choose a new or retain an old one next month. Old age has never looked better to me if this is the new normal.

Words to GREAUX by OVER-SEEDING WITH RYEGRASS As our warm season turfgrasses (st augustinegrass, centipedegrass, zoysiagrass, and bermudagrass) start to enter dormancy, many South Louisiana gardeners prefer to over seed their lawns with ryegrass in order to keep a nice carpet of green all winter long. I get asked all the time about whether or not over-seeding with ryegrass is a recommended practice. The answer is not as easy as you would think. The major Will Afton disadvantage of intermixing a cool season and a warm season grass is competition in the spring once the warm season grass comes out of dormancy. This can provide early season stress and may contribute to poor health. I would not recommend over seeding a stressed-out lawn. I like to promote what I call “over-seeding with a purpose” or just having a reason other than just because. Some people like to over seed to keep the lawn attractive for family events and other outdoor activities. Some people like to spread some ryegrass seed over an area where digging had occurred to prevent erosion. Vegetable gardeners might even want to over seed the garden with ryegrass and use it as a cover crop if they want to tend to a fall garden. If done with purpose, over seeding can be extremely beneficial in the landscape.

Most people will typically use ryegrass to over seed the lawn. Ryegrass is a popular cool season grass that will grow during the fall, winter, and early spring. You will find annual and perennial varieties for sale at the garden centers and feed stores this time of year. This usually refers to the plant’s life cycle but in the deep south both annual and perennial varieties will not make it through the summer time heat. The biggest difference between the two is that annual ryegrass will grow tall and has a lighter green color versus perennial ryegrass that grows shorter and has a deeper green color. Another difference between the two is price. Perennial ryegrass usually cost twice as much as annual varieties.

The first step in the process to over seed the lawn begins with mowing. You want to make a final pass with the lawn mower, cutting at the same height as would during the regular growing season. Apply seed at a rate of 5-10lbs per 1000ft using a broadcast or drop spreader. Go with the higher rate for a dense planting. Ryegrass does not spread like our warm season grasses. It is described as a clump forming grass. Once you a have spread the seed you will need to apply a consistent amount of irrigation. Once the seedlings reach 1in tall you can adjust back to normal watering practices. You can add a fertilizer once your warm season grass gone completely dormant. This will require careful observation. Use 1lbs of Nitrogen for every 1000ft2. This would equate to either 7.5 lbs of 13-13-13 or 12.5 lbs of 8-8-8 fertilizer. Continue with regular mowing as needed throughout the remainder of the season.
