RADICAL LEFTIST FASHION POLICE TARGET MAGA HATS By. Jeff Crouere To many of the radical leftists who inhabit the interconnected worlds of the media, Hollywood and the Democratic Party, the red hat with the words “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) has become the new similar of racism. According to left wing activist and actress Alyssa Milano, wearing the MAGA hat is akin to wearing a “white hood.”

Thus, for Milano, supporting Donald Trump is the same thing as belonging to a white supremacist group like the KKK. Obviously, she has overlooked that the MAGA hat has been worn by African American conservatives and the President’s supporters like entertainer Kanye West. For a uber-progressive like Milano, it does not matter than there is nothing racially offensive in the slogan and that it was used by former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Since it is now associated with Donald Trump, the “Make America Great Again” slogan has become incredibly racist. To leftists like Milano and her Hollywood friends, President Trump is the epitome of evil.

Imagine the hysteria when unhinged leftists saw a brief clip of an incident last Friday at the pro-life rally in Washington D.C. These lunatics were triggered as MAGA hat wearing Covington Catholic high school youngsters were shown smiling, chanting and clapping. Initially, these crazies blasted the students for supposedly disrespecting a Native American activist, Nathan Phillips, who walked right up to them banging a drum. When the entire video was released, it should have been obvious to everyone that the students, such as 16-year-old Nicholas Sandmann, did nothing wrong. In fact, the focus should have been on a group of African American protesters who were yelling vile insults and profanities at the students and Phillips, who misrepresented his military service and has a criminal record.

The liberal mob was not concerned about the baggage of Phillips and treated him with kid gloves. An interview by Savannah Guthrie on NBC’s Today Show was a total embarrassment. Her toughest question to Phillips was “how are you feeling?” One day earlier she had grilled Sandmann about the expression on his face and having the audacity to wear the MAGA hat.

Over the past week, Sandmann and his classmates at Covington Catholic have been treated as criminals by countless reporters, celebrities and Twitter trolls. There was little to no concern about the damage this was inflicting on innocent children. To make matters worse, the identities of several students were exposed and the hate mongers on the left started threatening them and their families. So many death threats were made that the school had to cancel classes on Tuesday because an unsafe environment had been created for the children. Hopefully, their lawyers will file a massive lawsuit against the many celebrities and so-called journalists who defamed them.

The children were targeted because they are white, Catholic, pro-life and had the courage to wear a red MAGA hat. Even Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan, jump on board the MAGA hat hate train, writing that “To wear a MAGA hat is to wrap oneself in a Confederate flag.” How insane, but such commentary is what regularly appears on the pages of the Washington Post.

This type of abuse may be in store for any of the 63 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election. According to Milano, Trump is cultivating “systemic racism and misogyny in this country” and “making it acceptable.” Such drivel is rampant among Hollywood stars who are constantly leaping on any controversy to attack Donald Trump.

Of course, the President can handle the criticism, but when it extends to children, it has crossed the line. They should be able to wear a MAGA hat and not be attacked. They should be able to attend a pro-life march and not be attacked. However, Milano believes that anyone who “proudly wears the red hat identifies with an ideology of white supremacy and misogyny and “gives a tacit endorsement for the hatred and the violence” of the “past few years.”

This nonsensical belief is shared by many other left-wing activists. In fact, they connect those wearing MAGA hats to the white supremacists who marched in Charlottesville, VA and the attempted mail bomber who was arrested last October.

Milano was certainly not the only celebrity who criticized the Covington Catholic High School students. Comedian Kathy Griffin channeled her Trump hatred toward these youngsters and called for their identities to be revealed. Actor Michael Rapaport even made a homophobic slur about the students. Not surprisingly, the leaders in the LGBTQ community have not come forward to condemn Rapaport.

Until at least the 2020 election, we can expect the left to continue their campaign to denounce Trump supporters and especially those who wear red MAGA hats. This should encourage the millions of Trump supporters to wear the hats as often as possible. There is nothing wrong and certainly nothing racist for people to express their support for a politician and a political movement. In fact, it is an utterly American thing to do as, thank God, we still have the First Amendment.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WADE The LSU Tigers pulled off one of the most improbable basketball wins of all time in college hoops this past weekend when they rallied from 14 points down with 2:06 to play in the game and went on a 15 to 1 run to tie the game to force an overtime. The Tigers won, 86 to 80, being led by an overachieving roster of talented and tenacious players recruited by the best basketball coach maybe to ever reside in Baton Rouge. The unfortunate victim was a medium to mediocre Missouri squad, missing their top three-point scorer. But they were at home and Missouri was used to playing in a tough collegiate basketball conference, including perennial powerhouse Kansas and top tier programs like Texas and Oklahoma.

The Tigers were given a less than one half of one percent chance of winning that game with the score and circumstances as they were. I was ready to turn the radio off at that point and take it to the house when something stopped me. I’m glad it did.

These Tigers don’t have the overall length of the great talented teams under Dale Brown. But, fortunately, they don’t have Dale Brown either. Brown could take NBA talent and his postseason performances were among the worst of any major college basketball coach. Brown was always too busy developing a “freak” defense or bullying people with his superior knowledge and Renaissance Man background. Brown’s most famous quote comes from former Indiana basketball Hall of Fame coach Bobby Knight, who, when asked about a Final Four game against Brown’s Tigers and if he was worried about their talent, Knight said, “I was certainly worried about perhaps the most talented college basketball squad of that season, but then I looked down the sideline and saw Coach Brown with his team and I stopped worrying.”

No such fear resides with the youngish Wade, who, in his third year, is developing a fine squad of fiery players. They could wind up with the best backcourt in the SEC this year and currently are ranked in the Top 25, trailing only Number One Tennessee in the conference standings. They have made mistakes, sure, but they have won two of their three overtime contests and have shown they have the confidence of depending on an eight-man rotation for their success.

For a team that is still limited in enough big men to be able to crash the boards with impunity, the Tigers find a way to clear the glass both offensively and defensively to keep them in any game they play. They still must face Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee this season but they have the Will to win and they will Wade into any and all opponents until the bitter end.

Expect the Tigers to rise into the Top 20 or even Top 16 teams before the middle of February. This is a dangerous team, one that will make the March Madness dance in 2019 and will be in the top half dozen teams in their particular bracket. If they hit the SEC trifecta with wins over Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee, look for them to be in the top five in the country with a chance to be a number one or two seed.

This is not your father’s team nor is it one that Dale Brown could con for an entire regular season until the chips were on the line. Much like the current Los Angeles Dodgers, you could depend on a Dale Brown team to be tanked, much like the ballyhooed loss to Kentucky years ago when Brown and his Tigers blew a 32-point LEAD against Kentucky. In that game, Kentucky had less than a one tenth of one percent chance of winning, but as Bobby Knight told the oddsmakers, “Don’t take the under on this one, guys. You forget whose coaching the LSU Tigers.” Knight wouldn’t think that against Wade, who might become Joe Alleva’s best hires in Baton Rouge. Just don’t think you can sashay up to the P-Mac in February and buy a ticket for the Tennessee game. If you don’t have it by now, it’ll cost you. But LSU basketball is fun again, run by a very good coach and with a roster full of never-say-die ball players. And plan to be in that number next month when the Tigers host number one Tennessee at the P-Mac. I will be.

PRUNING BACKYARD FRUIT TREES

Beef Enchiladas

There are many recipes cooking with ground beef. A few that come to mind are hamburgers, meatballs, meatloaf, beef nachos, stuffed peppers, Shepard’s pie, and then there are the recipes using ground beef in a red sauce with pasta, like lasagna or add it to a wonderful soup.

MY recipe is for Beef Enchiladas. This is a familiar Tex-Mex recipe and seems to have been enjoyed by many fans throughout the decades having become a popular menu item in Mexican restaurants.

My fondest memory of my first encounter with beef enchiladas was at the infamous Taco Tico.

Taco Tico was a chain restaurant opened by Dan Foley in 1962 in his hometown of Wichita, Kansas. Taco Tico’s ground beef enchiladas had the perfect flavor with a well-balanced tomato base sauce, and the cheese lightly melted on top. This was my all-time favorite.

Tacos were always okay, but to me, enchiladas had something special about them. Maybe it was the soft corn tortilla filled with ground beef and those years going through the Taco Tico drive thru that had me hooked. Once I learned this recipe, it became fun to cook for others. You can also use shredded beef or chicken, but for me, it had to be ground beef. ENJOY!

Beef Enchiladas - 4 servings

Ingredients: 1 pound ground beef • 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped fine • 2 teaspoons sea salt ¼ teaspoon fresh black pepper • 2 tablespoon chili powder (not spicy) 1 onion, medium dice • 2 cups beef stock 1 tablespoons paprika • 1 teaspoon cumin, ground 1 pound cheddar cheese, shredded • (8) 6” corn tortillas

For Serving 4: 1 small container of Sour Cream • 4 sprigs of cilantro Method: • In a medium pot turn on heat to high, and add olive oil • Add the garlic, onions and mix well. Add ground beef and season with salt, peppers, paprika, chili powder and cumin • Add beef stock, and cook hard for 15 minutes.

• Preheat oven to 375 degrees • Heat a little oil in another skillet, but do not let it smoke.

• Heat each tortilla in the hot oil for a quick second to soften, using tongs to flip quickly, and remove on to a piece of paper towel. Repeat till all are done. You can stack on top each other.

• Taste the beef and adjust seasonings if needed.

• Drain the beef liquid into another small pot and roll up 2 tablespoons beef in each tortilla • Place each enchilada side by side in a 9” x 11” baking dish. Pour sauce on top each and sprinkle cheese.

Cover with aluminum and bake for 10 minutes or till the cheese melts.

• Serve Immediately 2 per plate. Top with sour cream and cilantro for garnish.

February is usually our coldest month of the year. What better to do than prepare your backyard fruit trees for the oncoming spring? As with all gardening practices, there are many benefits to pruning. Prune fruit trees on an annual basis to maintain good tree health, encourage proper growth, maximize productivity, improve fruit quality, and to control their size and shape. Limbs and branches damaged during the growing season are also removed from the tree.

Now is a good time of the year to start pruning back yard fruit trees. Horticulturists recommend pruning during late winter when trees are dormant. It is easy to see and prune undesirable branches when there are no leaves on the tree. The wounds created by pruning heal faster because the spring growth period directly follows. Tree bark is less likely to tear because sap flow is greatly reduced during the winter months. Try to time the pruning process just before spring bud break for best results.

The first step in pruning is to gather the right tools. A well-stocked tool kit should always accompany a gardener with a mission to prune. Some of the basics include handheld bypass pruners, lopper style pruners and a pruning saw to make large cuts. Make sure pruners are clean and sharp. When pruning, you want to make smooth clean cuts. Clean cuts minimize damaged tissue and allow the tree to heal faster.

Start the pruning process by removing dead, diseased, and damaged limbs completely from the tree.

Be meticulous as you examine the tree. Stand at the drip line and look inward toward the trunk of the tree. Make your way the entire tree as you look for limbs to remove. Next, go through and examine the tree for any limbs that cross and rub on each other. Select the healthiest limb and completely remove the other from the tree. The remaining steps can differ from tree to tree.

Apples, peaches, nectarines, and plums are commonly pruned to an “open center” style. This helps with keeping the tree wider rather than taller and most importantly, it helps to maximize the amount of sunlight hitting each leaf on the tree. On young trees, the central leader is removed to encourage horizontal branching and limbs are removed from the inner canopy. Many people say that open center fruit trees resemble upside down umbrellas with no handles.

Citrus trees do not require much pruning. Prune off any branches that grow towards the ground. This helps with mowing and herbicide applications. It also prevents contact with the ground when as fruit growth and develop during the growing season. Remove branches that growth straight up. This helps control the height of the tree. The tree canopy can also be thinned to improve airflow. Try not to over prune a citrus tree. It will cause excessive growth and a delay in flowering.

Muscadines and grapes are pruned on a trellising system. Young plants are trained to grow on one trunk and run down a wire support. Remove damaged wood from the vines entirely. Cut all of the lateral shoots produced during previous growing season back to two to four dormant buds creating a fruiting spur. Older spurs can eventually become multi branch and difficult to maintain. You can remove older fruiting spurs and allow a new shoot to grow and eventually fill in.

Once the pruning process is complete, collect all the pruning trash and dispose. Most can be composted but get rid of diseased plant material. Bag it and put it out with the trash. Fertilizer should be applied soon after prior to spring green up. Use a soil test analysis as a guide. A rate of 1lbs 8-8-8 (about two baking cups) for every year in age can be used if a soil test is not available. Evenly spread fertilizer through the drip line of the tree and thoroughly water it in.
