Speaking of Mardi Gras. This year’s Parade theme is “Louisiana Sports”! Be creative and come out to support our local town parade!

The Parade will roll @ 1:00pm on Sunday, February 9th. A small number of paper applications are available at Pearl River Town hall. Hey, if you are looking for more to do in town, everyone has seemed to be really enjoying the live entertainment at Yum Yums’ Café’. After speaking with Yum Yums’, they informed me that every Thursday and Saturday they plan on having live entertainment, every other Thursday Elvis will be “in the building”. Free admission (no cover charge) will be offered with the purchase of Dinner and free dancing lol. Make plans to reserve a table today.

In other PR news, in an effort to raise money for current and future projects of the Pearl River FFA Alumni Assoc. will be holding an online auction on February 29. They are asking for donations of items that can be placed for auction. Any donations (small or large items, services, gift cards, coupons, etc.) will be greatly appreciated. Any monetary donations will be used to purchase things that can be auctioned. All donations are tax deductible. Bidding will begin at 11:00 am and will end at 9:00 p.m. The auction will take place on the PRFFAA facebook page. Mr. Joe Seeley went to be with the Lord on Jan. 18th. Deepest condolence to the Seeley family. Joe Seeley was a longtime resident, a personal friend of mine and a huge part of the fabric of our community. Some of his involvement in our community included: Working as an instructor in the Naval JROCTC at Pearl River High School in the 89-90’s. Serving on the Board of Pearl River Centennial Board in 2006 , American Red Cross (he and his wife managed the American Red Cross shelter at Creekside Junior High during Hurricane Katrina), Parent Teacher Association and Parent Teacher Student Association volunteer for over 12 years and was a local president, and held district and state offices. He was awarded the Louisiana PTA Life Service Award and was honored for his volunteer service from the Slidell Women’s Republican Club.

He was also our Post Commander of our Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5174. He served his community well, making sure to play an active part at many of our town meetings and town and school events. Joe received recognition and awards for his outstanding leadership and service but also helped individuals, organizations, and businesses behind the scenes. Pearl River will truly miss you Mr. Joe. Tony’s Take FREE AT LAST! FREE AT LAST!! GOD ALMIGHTY, FREE AT LAST! The shackles of subordination dropped late in the first quarter at the Superdome as Miracle Worker Joe Burrow began to parse his latest choice victim. The Clemson Tigers, with their copycat LSU mascot, song and stadium nickname (done uglier, slower and with less passion, respectively, than LSU’s), began to realize what fourteen teams had discovered from the dog days of August through the balmy weekend in Atlanta in early winter: this Tiger team was not only the best LSU team of all time, it would take its place among the elite handful of collegiate powerhouses of the past 100 years. And it had completed the greatest single college football season in history. No question.

There was no doubt this Tiger train created the most explosive offense in 150 years. Nearly 50 points a game against seven teams ranked in the top ten at the time of their contest. A quarterback who averaged a touchdown per quarter and became the first to throw for 60 touchdowns and create 64 total touchdowns. A nearly-forgotten diminutive running back who was a finalist for the Hornung Award, given to the best “swiss army knife” athlete in America. A tight end who actually was a vital part of the passing game. The best offensive line in the country. The best wide receiver and three receiver grouping in America. More awards than Walt Disney ever garnered in one year for this team and its coaches. The Beatles and the Stones rolled into one (We Love Them, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!! We Can Get Some Satisfaction).

It was REDEMPTION. Redemption to overwhelm the Never Orgerons, redemption to erase the incompetence of former Athletic Director Joe Alleva, redemption to wash away the stink of a situation nursed and rehearsed eight years ago by one Mad Hatter, whose borderline madness infuriated a Tiger Nation and who humiliated an ordinary quarterback whose only real crime, apparently, was getting upset when pulled after his second interception against Alabama in 2011. That quarterback had made it possible to lead LSU to an undefeated regular season in 2011 but pettiness, stubbornness and sheer stupidity by its head coach brought that magical season to it’s disgraceful end.

The Les Miles Era has finally reached The Last Mile. Incredibly, the LSU Tigers put away a budding Clemson dynasty by 17 points in what was essentially a home game in the Superdome, for it’s fourth modern day national championship. It was a complete team effort, led by two outstanding coordinators, a truly special passing game coach and a head coach who might have wondered whether his contemporaries would ever elevate him to their status or above. Done, done and done.

Facing the second best quarterback, the best running back and two of the five best receivers of the season, the LSU defense held their own. Facing the Butkus Award winning linebacker and the best linebacker set of this season, along with the best secondary and defensive coordinator, the award-winning Tiger offense treated them like so much dust, once the team escaped two series where their backs were literally against the goal line wall, on their own 4 yard line.

Playing from behind by the most points in the season, LSU blew by the Clemsonites as if they were Northwestern State. Clemson had no answers for Burrow, Chase and the greatest Snowstorm on Turf.

A blizzard of formations kept Clemson guessing and the stats and scores kept on piling up. Burrow hadn’t officially been named the Manning Award winner, (the trophy going to the best quarterback during the postseason). But, gee, 12 touchdowns, wins against teams number 3 and four, 105 points scored, over 900 yards passing. I think he gets it.

So it’s done. The attrition continues (three coaches to the NFL and a head college coaching job and more than a half dozen underclassmen to the NFL ) and LSU now faces the future Alabama sees every year. The proof is in the pudding that can be made sweet again in 2020 before it gets set. It won’t be a Nick Saban type hiring spree but we will need a program next season to recognize David Aranda and Joe Brady’s replacements. However, one thing is settled: the future of LSU’s offensive might is resting in volumes of RPO material secured in Baton Rouge and there are four talented quarterback architects on campus today to rebuild that offense in 2020, including an experienced backup quarterback in Myles Brennan, who is only nine pounds lighter than Joe Burrow and is the same 6’4” height, with a stronger arm.

Tony’s Take 49ERS HEADED FOR LUCKY NUMBER 7; IS GAROPPOLO THE COOL-HEADED GAMBLER? The San Francisco 49ers have reclaimed their 1980’s spot as a powerhouse NFL unit. Only this time, there aren’t the dozen or so slam-dunk Hall of Famers leading the way. Under no amount of hallucinegenics can you envision Jimmy Garoppolo as Joe Montana or Steve Young, Raheem Mostert as Roger Craig or any of the current wideouts as Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark or John Taylor, let alone the greatest secondary of all time with Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright, Carlton Williamson and Deion Sanders. However, you can take this 2019 49er defensive line and compare them right now to the Fearsome Foursome of the 1950’s and ’60’s Rams and the great Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970’s. They’re that good and thanks to GM John Lynch and Coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers hung better with all 16 regular season opposing teams than any other NFL franchise in history that wasn’t undefeated. What I mean by that is the 49ers lost their three games in overtime, on the last play of the fourth quarter and on a controversial call late in the fourth quarter and a last play touchdown in regulation. San Francisco would have been undefeated except for those four plays. No 49er team has ever come that close to perfection The 49ers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City, 27 to 17, in preseason. They know what they are facing in Miami on Sunday. They have no bone to pick with the Chiefs; in fact, five former 49er quarterbacks played for Kansas City after their careers in San Francisco: Joe Montana, Alex Smith, Steve Bono, Elvis Grbac and Steve Deberg. DeBerg was the unluckiest, playing behind Montana, Steve Young and John Elway. At one time, he held the NFL season touchdown record with 36 in a season.

The 49ers lost their 6th Super Bowl against the Ravens in New Orleans primarily because activist Colin Kaepernick couldn’t find a way to score against a good but not great Baltimore defense from first and goal on the 5 yard line. That was the game where the lights went out in the Superdome, the lights began to go out with the 49ers and the light of reason died in the mind of Kaepernick. This season, the 49ers have a very good quarterback in Garoppolo but the jury is out when it comes to what he can do on this biggest stage. Jimmy G has shown some happy feet and nervousness as a pro and he simply cannot show those attributes against a very solid Kansas City squad. His counterpart, Patrick Mahomes, is one of the best half-dozen quarterbacks in the league.

Fortunately, the 49ers have faced four of those in their last ten games (Russell Wilson, twice, Lamar Jackson, Drew Brees and Aaron Rogers, twice. They won four and lost the others on the last play of the game in regulation and in overtime.

If Mahomes is not completely on his game, this contest could be over by halftime. Yes, the Chiefs stopped Derrick Henry of the Titans. But the 49er offensive line is much better than Tennessee’s and the Niners have two other quality running backs and Kyle Juszczyk at fullback, whose name is as difficult to spell and say as it is to stop him in the running and passing game.

Back to Jimmy G. If he shows the quick progression decision-making version of himself, the Niners will win with little fanfare. He is being schooled really hard about getting rid of the ball when the pocket collapses, his biggest weakness. But he’s seen success on improvising plays with his running and he’s shown toughness in playing through injuries during the last part of this season.

It comes down to which team wants to end the drought. KC has only seen the Sunshine Band once, in 1970. There’s no one on the Kansas City roster except for tight end that the 49ers haven’t seen a better version of this year. And the Chiefs are too inconsistent in a game; the 49ers will take control and force Mahomes into hurry-up. But Mahomes, although mobile, isn’t Jackson or Wilson with his escapability, and the San Francisco front seven, with the best set of linebackers no one has ever heard of, will keep Mahomes under control. These guys tackle better than any other team in the league and they don’t get rattled or depend on a superstar to pull the game out.

Words to GREAUX by BEST TIME TO PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS

Many of us appreciate not having to do a lot of yard work during this time of year but don’t waste time if you are planning to add shade trees to the landscape or decide to revitalize foundation plantings of evergreen shrubs. One of the top five most commonly asked gardening questions I received is when is the best time to plant? Well, the answer is now! Now is the best time to plant because the plants are in a dormant state (low irrigation and nutritional needs) and temperatures are well below heat stress levels. Not only is it the best time to plant it is also a great time to transplant and move plants around the yard.

If you want to add a shade tree start thinking about the location where you will put it. Depending on species, many trees have different shapes and sizes. This should be a part of the decision-making process. How tall do you want it to get? How wide do you want it to get? Do you want an evergreen or a deciduous tree? We have many different trees that work well in back yards. For narrower spaces, trees like the bald cypress, tupelo and swamp gum make for excellent native options. Nuttall Oak, Shumard Oak, and Willow Oak are excellent choices from the oak family and are deciduous. Some other notable deciduous trees are the American Beech, Sycamore, and Green Ash. The Southern Magnolia and Savannah Holly are good evergreen choices. As you can see there are many different options for you. It might be best to visit with a nurseryman and see what some of these trees look like in person.

In order to plant we must dig a hole. There is no right way or wrong to dig a hole, but we must think about the plant when we do it. The soil level in relation to the trunk (whether it is container grown or field grown) should be noted. You do not want to plant it any deeper than that. The width of the hole should be about two to three times the diameter of your root ball. Go ahead and remove the tree from the container. With field grown tree, be sure leave the root ball intact by leaving the burlap and metal wire in place. Place it in the hole and backfill with the soil you removed from the hole. Lightly pack the soil and make sure the original soil line on the trunk is visible. You might need to replant if the tree is too low. Finish the task by adding a 2-3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree. Be sure to pull away excess mulch from the base of the tree a few inches to avoid “volcano mulching”. To finish the job, apply a three-point staking system to keep the tree from blowing over. The stakes can be removed after the first growing season.

Anyone who loves kittens can contact a local rescue organization or shelter and offer to foster a litter. Litters of kittens are available year-round now that winters are so mild. Find out about low-cost or free spay/neuter by contacting a rescue organization or your local parish shelter. Encourage others to spay and neuter their pets. There are not enough homes for all the kittens being born year-round. The ones pictured here will all be adopted eventually. Many others will be euthanized in kill shelters or die on the street.

If you are selling one item - it can’t be more than $300 If you are selling two items - each item can’t be more than $200 If you are selling three items - each item can’t be more than $150 All free ads must be completely written by the seller whether placed in person, by mail, fax or email and be legible to be printed. Persons placing multiple ads -or- consistently sending free ads will be barred from running ads in our paper.

No more than 3 listed items will be accepted. Limit of 20 words per ad, including phone number(s).

Items without prices will be edited out of the ad unless it is a garage sale ad.

All ads are limited to 20 words, including the phone number(s). Extra words will be edited out of the ad unless payment of .50¢ For each extra word accompanies the ad. Checks, money orders or cashier’s checks are the only way payment is accepted.

Each ad will run once. Requesting an ad to run more than once will cost $5.00 Per run for ads under 20 words.

Changes in resubmitted ads will be considered a new ad with the same costs and restrictions as the original ad.
