Tony’s Takes RANDOM THOUGHTS AND IDEAS AT YEARS’ END It’s surprising to me that we enter 2019 and I haven’t retired somewhere. Growing up, that was the big issue for discussion among folks north of 50 years old. Those people, adults in my youth, had experienced three major wars, the advent of radio and television, communism, the Roaring ’20’s, Prohibition, talkie moviesand the drive-in, as well as the Depression triggered by the Wall Street Crash of 1929. By the time the 50’s rolled around, they had a lifetime of major events and movements in their lives, a compilation never seen before or since. They went from horses and buggies to rockets and interstates, agrarian to urban and from non-regulation of nearly everything on the federal level to regulation of most things deemed harmful or exploitive to the general population.

On the other hand, we were raised by the Greatest Generation and War Babies, people still used to a handshake as a solemn commitment and their word as bond. A time when a village raised a kid and children weren’t “buddies” but the precious commodity of a generation meant to be loved, mentored and guided by parents who realized their role was just that and not one of being on an equal level with an eight-year old. So the generation that knew Civil War veterans as family or community elders was ready to call it a day at 65 or earlier, when the life expectancy was barely that long in the first place.

They didn’t have 401Ks and insurance policies that paid off at the end of a term or lucrative retirement or Social Security incomes. They made do, living in their golden years as they had growing up. Most things were paid for with little credit extension and most possessions were vital and necessary.

As we enter this year marking the 90th anniversary of this country’s greatest financial collapse, we need to remember that the United States has experienced fluctuating degrees of greatness.

At any given moment, what was deemed great in the 30’s or 40’s is now laughed at or worse, forgotten. That trend continues as the values my War Baby generation were taught have been battered and watered down. Getting equal and getting fair does not always mean getting even or getting back….or getting unresponsive, uncooperative or not understanding.

For the first time in our history, it appears our newer generations will not know the values, successes or sense of accomplishment that spurred on previous eras of American citizens. Too much has been handed to these younger folk without the understanding of what is takes or took to secure a certain level of happiness and pride. And too much pressure, financial and otherwise, has been laid on our future leaders through Draconian college tuitions, housing and insurance costs and the loss of major disciplines in the business world. Our newest generation is more scared than secure, exploited than encouraged and coddled at home rather than being kicked out into the world as a young adult to make their mark. Well-meaning social engineers have emasculated many of our men and put unachievable goals in front of many women who want to choose their own path, not one created from some Utopian manual on a bookshelf.

One hundred years ago, the 19th year of the 20th century set the tone for the next fifty years.

Henry Ford was having success with mass produced automobiles, inflation was rift in Europe, leading to the stock market events in 1929, do-gooders got rid of alcohol in January and October of 1919 in the United States and radio was on the eve of becoming America’s pastime with the inauguration of the first commercial radio station in 1920. Cars, inflation, booze and entertainment. Today its drugs, runaway credit, cell phones and overwhelming electronic video choices.

My wish for 2019 is a return of diplomacy and discourse, respect and reason, understanding and encouragement to everyone in this country. It’s not about “us” verses “them”. It’s about taking the high road and being your own person, maintaining values and love you should have been infused with as a youngster. Learn patience, tolerance and to understand the various facets of equality. And do some good every day. Not everything is about status, power and money. It never has been and our enduring heroes never made their biggest mark in these areas. They were humans with souls and caring, commitment and vision. Get some vision for 2019, would you please?

Tony’s Takes TIGERS RECRUITING HAUL BRINGS OPTIMISM FOR 2019 The LSU Tigers secured the signatures of most of the targets they had set for their early signing 2019 football recruiting class. With three or four players ranked 5 star talents, the Tigers got an instant improvement in the secondary, on the interior offensive line and at running back. But the team did nothing to improve their biggest need - no impact outside pass rusher signed up and there is really not one on the horizon for the more traditional February commitment date.

The early signing period has taken a life of its own and its just a matter of a short period of time before the December date replaces February entirely. With high school players becoming more and more sophisticated in understanding the various aspects of the game, it makes more sense to bring them into the fold before the bowl season has various college teams scrambling for replacement coaches which could confuse incoming freshmen. Let the high school kids get this monkey off their backs before the holidays and midterm finals and be done with the Groundhog Day-era tradition of having seniors sign up so late after their last high school season is finished.

LSU still has to face the fact that Nick Saban is in the driver’s seat for the next four or five years and that Kirby Smart and Jimbo Fisher will be there to raid Louisiana for its surfeit of outstanding football talent. When your recruiting class is number four in the country but also number four in your conference and number three in your division, well, its like being a Kardashian woman. You’re good-looking but the others are too and sometimes they have better wardrobes, makeup or money. Alabama, Georgia and Texas A&M will be there for the immediate future and that doesn’t factor in Auburn, Florida or the rest of the SEC. Meanwhile, the LSU baseball team is back in the driver’s seat with its number one preseason ranking and the basketball team is showing the development it hasn’t had in the past generation under three coaches previous to Will Wade. Kentucky isn’t the elephant in the room right now, with the ascension of Tennessee and Auburn and that bodes well for LSU, whose losses to the Wildcats in roundball rival those football losses to Alabama in fierce recruiting.

NCAA basketball is still an Everyman’s game and if the Tigers can continue to secure the recruiting classes reflected in this year’s performances, they will be a national force as soon as next year.

He campaigned on a platform of bringing our troops back home from Syria and Afghanistan and focusing on an “America First” foreign policy. By announcing he was removing our 2,000 troops from Syria, the President is following through on another campaign promise.

Syria is a hodgepodge of multiple terrorist groups, regional forces, foreign troops and religious fighters exerting influence. Our forces have been working with the Kurdish fighters in the Northeast section of the country fighting Islamic State terrorists. The operation has been an amazing success and the Islamic State has suffered tremendous losses. In both Iraq and Syria, the terrorists now control only 1% of the land they used to dominate.

These perpetual detractors are looking foolish once again. The United States is not the policeman of the world. Our military is the best trained and funded fighting force, but it needs to be used very judiciously.

The philosophy of using our military very sparingly was adopted by President Ronald Reagan, who rarely sent United States forces into combat. Under Reagan, our military benefited from increased pay and a massive increase in overall spending. During his administration, our military was able to purchase advanced weaponry, aircraft and reach the milestone of a 600 ship navy.

We repaired broken equipment that had not been upgraded in years, while purchasing new missile systems that helped us win the Cold War without firing a shot.

Gardeners are always looking for something to do early in the year while waiting for the spring garden season. One very important practice that every experienced farmer will tell you is to have your soil analyzed for its current nutrient status. After reviewing the results you will know what nutrients should be added and you will be able to choose a corresponding fertilizer. You will also find out valuable information on your soil pH status which tells you whether you have an acidic or basic soil type. The soil pH can be adjusted using different soil amendments. The first step in getting a soil sample is to get your hands on one of the LSU AgCenter’s soil sample mail-in boxes.

Check with your local extension office where to find soil sample box displays. Inside each box you will find written directions, three sample bags, and a submission form. To take a soil sample you will need a shovel and a large container or bucket. Take several samples from the area in which you want to analyze. Mix these “sub-samples” together and then place into one of the supplied bags. Make sure to label it so you know where it came from. Fill out the submission form and list what plants you will be growing in the appropriate column. Make sure to check off the box for “routine soil test” at the bottom. The lab fee is $10.00 for every sample you send in. You can enclose a check for the total amount. Go ahead and put everything into the mailer box including the completed submission form, soil-filled sample bags, and payment. Seal it closed and put it in your mailbox. It usually takes about two weeks to get results back and when they do you can give the county agent a call to review and help you make the best decision.

It was under the administration of his successor, President George H. W. Bush, that the military was used to remove the dictator of Panama and repel Iraqi forces from Kuwait. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States sent military forces to Afghanistan and Iraq. Today, 17 years later, we are still fighting in Afghanistan, but so is the terrorist group, the Taliban.

The British and the Russians were not able to tame the inhospitable environment of Afghanistan and neither has the United States. Fortunately, the Trump administration has announced that over the next few months, 7,000 troops will be withdrawing from Afghanistan. It is time to declare victory in Afghanistan and remove all U.S. forces from the longest running war in our nation’s history.

President Trump has delivered a tremendous increase in military spending. This has allowed our defense forces to upgrade and recover from years of inadequate maintenance during the Obama administration. Nevertheless, funding our military appropriately does not translate into sending our forces around the globe.

It is the right call for President Trump to bring home our troops from Syria and start ending our involvement in Afghanistan. While these missions should end, the President should send our troops on another vital mission, much closer to home. There is not a pressing need for our military to stay in Syria, but we have an extremely pressing need on our southern border.

REMEMBER OUR VETERANS!

Our military should be placed throughout our 2,000 mile border with Mexico, supplementing the courageous work of our overwhelmed border patrol agents. This is an assignment that is essential and will have the strong support of the American people. After 17 years, Americans are weary of war in the Middle East and are ready for our country to start focusing on the problems on the home front not half a world away.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our STARTCARES@HOTMAIL.COM volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, WWW.STARTFOSTERS.COM especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Here are some of our wonderful rescued dogs who are hoping to find homes in the new year. Each one has been patiently waiting for the right person or family to come along.
