Tony’s Take TIGERS, TONY, MARCH INTO UNCHARTED TERRITORY By the time you read this, LSU will have become one of the greatest college football teams in modern times or will have witnessed the same for the Clemson Tigers. As most of you know, oddsmakers pegged the Bayou Tigers a touchdown better than the Piedmont Tigers of South Carolina, two teams who determined what passed for a national championship back in 1958, in a Sugar Bowl contest won by LSU,7-0. Those were the days of 220 pound linemen, two-way players and third down quick kicks, three running backs in the backfield and only one “wideout”, the split end, usually set on the left side of the offensive line. No RPO, no options, no hurry-up, no situational substitutions. Les Miles football in a Les Miles era. Thank God it’s gone.

This week, the National Football Collegiate Championship filled the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with nearly 80,000 fans willing to spend up to $20,000 for a seat to watch the Death Valley Tigers from Clemson, South Carolina face the Death Valley Tigers from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At least 17 future NFL stars were in the starting lineups for these two teams - two of the five best quarterbacks, two of the six best running backs, five of the 14 best receivers…..the list goes on.

The money put out to attend this competition was really mind-boggling….and it didn’t even come close to the prices paid for a ticket to the Alabama-Georgia national championship two years ago. Like this year, that game was virtually a home contest for one of the combatants and it drove the prices through the roof. They probably would have been higher this year if Ohio State had played LSU instead of Clemson, given the Joe Burrow/Justin Fields conference transfer switch (Fields from Georgia to Ohio State and Burrow from Ohio State to LSU), especially Burrow’s delicious revenge game against the team he left to transfer to LSU in 2018.

15 and 0. Sounds like heaven, doesn’t it? One of the Tigers teams has that record today and I do pray it is our Tigers, the ones who were never given a chance to become the modern standard of LSU football in 2011, the year of the wannabe quarterback and the stubborn, clueless Hat who allowed his team no chance to repeat a victory over Alabama from earlier in the year. This year, under Ed Orgeron and Associates, the Tigers were a scary, prepared, confident threat, led by (no disrespect, Billy Cannon), the greatest football player ever to suit up for the Purple and Gold, Joe Burrow.

Back to the tickets. I was fortunate enough to secure two regular price tickets for the LSU-Oklahoma semifinal championship game in Atlanta at the end of December. When my wife and I returned home the Sunday following the game, I went to the office to check my email and found a notice that I had been selected to buy, at regular price, two tickets to the National Championship game at the Superdome. Good, lower Terrace seats just above the south end zone tunnel where the Saints come onto the field. First row, aisle seats. Ideal for watching plays develop from the perspective of the offensive backfield or secondary. I didn’t get these tickets because of this publication but instead due to my more than 30 years of being a faithful LSU season ticket holder.

My Atlanta seats were halfway up the nosebleed section on the LSU side but straddled the 30 yard line and they were wonderful.

I had to pinch myself because of all the 95th row, end zone, hot side of the stadium seats I had been stuck with over the years for away games watching the Tigers on the road. Hey, it couldn’t get any better than this, could it? It could. I mentioned I didn’t get the national championship tickets because of this publication but I did get the ultimate surprise because of this and my other Plus Publications in Louisiana and Mississippi. On New Years Eve, another email informed me that my publications had been granted media credentials and a Superdome parking pass for the game and the events leading up to it! This won’t be my first press box rodeo but boy, it will be the football equivalent of Cheyenne, Wyoming’s Frontier Days - the Grandaddy of All Rodeos. You’re not allowed to cheer in the press box but who cares? It’s not only a unique view of the game but an opportunity to share viewpoints with other sportswriters in a non-competitive venue and to learn and grow. I spent the better part of the past week at press conferences, face-to-face meetings with coaches, players and other media folk from around the country and experiencing firsthand how professional, friendly and efficient New Orleans area people are in putting on such a massive series of events. Even the President was here to watch.

Next issue, I will have a special page or two devoted to the sights and experiences of this a once-in-a-lifetime sporting event. It’s been a tremendous ride all season, culminating with two of the finest leaders of young men in college sports today, Dabo (Dabeaux?)

If you’re a Louisiana football fan, 2019 has gone down as perhaps the greatest year ever, with LSU, Tulane and the Saints all performing well. Regardless of your affiliation, a 15 and 0 LSU team will be the pinnacle of the season. It’s been a joyous ride. With all the conflicts in this country we are facing or may face in 2020, it’s comforting to have this vital pastime to embrace for half a year.

Tony’s Take 2020 SUPER BOWL HAS RETRO LOOK My condolences to Saints fans. You shouldn’t have to be going through the hell of another rotten postseason disaster. But, unlike 2018, this one was not caused by an outside force. I know about condolences. Growing up in San Francisco as a 49er fan, not only was professional football the butt of arrogant jokes by the rest of the country but also college football, especially Cal and Stanford, even USC and UCLA. The 1962 USC Trojans began to change all that when they won their first “national championship” against Wisconsin in the 1963 Rose Bowl. It always seems to be a beautiful day for the Rose Bowl festivities and it was no different that year. I was able to go because my sister was dating a defensive end from that team and since we both played the same position, me in high school, we had a lot in common. So Mike Gale gave me one of his tickets and I attended the game, won by USC, 42 to 37.

Fast forward decades. West Coast college football reached parity with the Big 10, sometimes even the SEC as well. We all know what the 49ers became, effected by the new ownership of the Niners in 1978 and the now infamous beating against the wall of the visiting 49ers by the Saints in 1980 in the Superdome. Some of you remember the Saints were leading at halftime, 35 to nothing, and many of the Saints were chanting “70 to nothing!” loud enough for the Niners to hear. Coach Bill Walsh simply said, “you hear them in there. You have a choice. Either they’re right or you’re going to show them they’re wrong.” The Niners fired out of the locker room to begin the 2nd half and won, 38 to 35, the event Walsh credits to the Niners becoming the 1980’s dynasty that led to four Super Bowl wins.

This year, the 49ers could return to the big game, last frequented by them in New Orleans,when the lights went out, the Niners bowed out on the five yard line of the Baltimore Ravens and the beginning of the welcome bow out of one obnoxious s.o.b. named Colin Kaepernick. Several years later, with a sleek new management team, including a Hall of Fame former defensive back, John Lynch, and the son of an NFL legend, Kyle Shanahan, son of Mike, the 49ers are back in the saddle, having successfully put their moronic owner, Jed York, on a shelf, sort of like what LSU did to Joe Alleva, LSU’s former AD.

Now San Francisco is one win away from their 7th Super Bowl appearance. They will either face the Kansas City Chiefs, who have not seen the Super Bowl since their win over Minnesota (sorry, Saints fans) in 1970, or the Tennessee/Nashville Titans, who have only appeared once, in 2000, against the Rams, wherever they were playing at the time (St. Louis). Green Bay won in 2016 and the Niners lost in 2013. But the Niners have to beat Green Bay in Santa Clara this weekend. They did so, convincingly, earlier in the year, holding Aaron Rogers to his worst day as a professional quarterback. But whoever wins this game should be the favorite to win over Kansas City or Tennessee. In any event, it will be refreshing not to see the Brady Bunch back in the big game and to deny Pete Carroll the opportunity to me is never a bad thing. If it’s Kansas City and San Francisco, well, the 49es beat the Chiefs in the preseason this year. And the Titans? How did they get here? Well, compared to the LSU/Clemson game, it’s not much of a blip on local football radar.

But if it is the 49ers, they will be looking to avenge their only Super Bowl loss. Like LSU, this time, the Niners have a competent quarterback behind center. Jordan Jefferson was a superior athlete at LSU, trying to play a position he really shouldn’t have been forced into at the college level and Kaepernick is a money-driven activist whose best left outside of a locker room; he’s much more effective as Nike’s Phil Knight’s handler.

If it’s Green Bay and Kansas City, well, that’s a rematch of the first Super Bowl in 1967, when personnel walked the streets outside the Los Angeles Coliseum before the game, trying to give away tickets to a game most people thought was a joke. It didn’t take long (Joe Namath in 1969) to change the country’s mind about the game and it’s been full throttle ever since.

Words to GREAUX by DEVELOP PLAN TO PREVENT LAWNS WEEDS While working as a County Agent for the LSU AgCenter, I hear many complaints about weeds. I hear from homeowners across the New Orleans metropolitan area whose yards are being taken over by this weed and that weed. Recently, I’ve been hearing horror stories about all kinds of lawn invaders including some that have been causing pain to bare feet. To understand the complex nature of weeds, or plants that are out of place, you must go back to biology class to review an important concept. Various weeds have different life cycles. Some weeds are perennial whereas others have an annual life cycle. This is a very important concept to understand when looking to intervene and Will Afton provide some control to reduce them in the lawn. Perennial weeds have a dormant period where they almost disappear and then return the next year to cause more problems. Annual weeds germinate, grow, flower and produce seeds in one year. These seeds will germinate the following year to repeat this process.

Identification is always the first step in dealing with a weed issue. Learn about its life cycle so that you can proceed to the next step in the control process. Before we jump to herbicide options, I must throw in a statement about soil fertility. In a lawn situation, we are growing a specific species of lawn grass. You need to know what species of grass you are growing. Soil fertility analyses or soil sample results will help you in knowing exactly how to fertilize your lawn in order to give your lawn grass the growing advantage so that it can out-compete other unwanted plants (weeds). This step is detrimental in a lawn weed management program.

When it comes to chemical control, herbicides come in two different forms. Pre-emergent herbicides work by killing young weed plants soon after germination, so that you don’t even see them at all. These types of herbicides work well with annual weeds, weed that naturally die after the seeding cycle. Some of the common annual weeds seen in late winter include plants like annual bluegrass, lawn burweed, Carolina geranium, henbit, and common chickweed. You must apply the pre-emergent herbicide before seeds germinate in order to be effective. Perennial weeds and annual weeds that are already growing will need a post-emergent herbicide in order to control them. These types of herbicides can be more effective in controlling perennial weeds but work on annual weeds as well. Common perennial weeds seen during late winter include clover, dandelion, mouse-eared chickweed, and wild garlic.

Use the following information to develop a weed management plan for your lawn.

• Apply to the dormant lawn in late winter (January through February).

• Apply a pre-emergent herbicide during the first half of February (February 1-15).

• Apply lawn fertilizer after April 15, when lawn is actively growing.

• Use post-emergent sprays as needed during the growing season.

• Stop fertilizer applications after September 1.

• Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in September to control cool season annuals weeds.

• Post-emergent sprays may be applied as needed for weed control during the remainder of the year.

Dimension (dithiopyr) is a common pre-emergent herbicide used in the home lawn. There are several post-emergent herbicide choices available to the homeowner. Herbicides like Fertilome’s Weed Free Zone or Ortho’s Weed B Gon Max for Southern Lawns are termed three- and four-way herbicide because they include a mixture of active ingredients, the chemical ingredient that kills the plant. The two previously mentioned products, along with atrazine, are excellent choices to use during late winter and after fertilization. MSM Turf (metsulfuron-methyl) can be used during the summer months. Remember to always read and follow label instructions. The product label includes very important information including a list of controlled weeds, a list of lawn grasses where the product can safely be used, mixing instructions, and safety precautions.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our STARTCARES@HOTMAIL.COM volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, WWW.STARTFOSTERS.COM especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Tabbies are the striped cats that come in a variety of patterns and colors. The term tabby refers to their markings, not to a particular breed. Gray, or brown tabbies may be the most common, but there are also many with different shades of orange coats, and some with buff, silver, or blue coats. One characteristic that most tabby cats have is the letter M formed by stripes on their forehead. Here are three great tabbies, all START rescues for adoption, who want to show off their beautiful markings. All three are domestic shorthairs (DSH), non-pedigreed cats with short coats.
