‘Happy New Year PR! 2020 has arrived!

“Big D’s” brings some Big News this New Year.

Each new year comes with new goals, new opportunities and new adventures. For one local restaurant this new year brings some big news. Many of you know “Big D’s” family owned restaurant which is well known for many reasons, such as their delicious food, their soft serve ice cream and their community generosity. I would like to take time to recognize this couple that has owned “Big D’s” for the last 5 years. Lifetime PR residents, Daryl and Debbie Singletary, are a true blessing to our community. If you have not had an opportunity to meet this wonderful couple, I encourage you to do so. They have always been a family that truly believes in giving back to their community. WWL recently did a coverage story on some of that “giving back” belief. Their family, while closing their business for a day to their paying customers, has for the past 5 years cooked and given away free Christmas Eve dinners. I was blessed to be a part of the process a couple of Christmas ago and when I say it’s a family affair , I mean their entire family, from the youngest to the oldest, they are in the kitchen making this feast, serving it up and also delivering it to those that are unable to come get a plate for themselves. These are the kind of people the Singletary family is and inspires other to be. The Big News is that “Big D’s” owners have (as of January 1st) purchased and are now the proud owners of the Lock One convenience store. It has been many years since Lock One Store has had local owners for this local store. I was able to speak to them about this exciting news and the new things we can look forward to with their ownership. Their wish is to be a true convenience to their community, offering items such as: eggs, milk, cold cuts and much more. They are also looking forward to selling bait/tackle and fishing license soon. Speaking of family, Lock One, big news and new…. The PRHS FFA would like to invite all to attend their very first “Kids Fishing Tournament” fundraiser which is being held on January 11th at Lock One Canal (left side). This will be a Bass and Perch fishing tournament for kids 18 and under sponsored by the Pearl River FFA officer team. There will be two age groups 13 yrs. & under and 14-18 years old. ($5 and $10 registration fees apply) All contestants must be checked in by 5:45 am. Cast off time is set for 6am.

Tony’s Take ATLANTA STADIUM AS FRESH, EXCITING AS TIGER FOOTBALL Our trip to Atlanta last weekend was as mellow a time as I’ve had in this overgrown Piedmont town in many a year. Besides the usual construction and traffic, which really wasn’t that bad (the traffic, that is), the town was laid back for the arrival of tens of thousands of LSU fans and about a third of that for Sooner supporters. The hospitality was palatable; people were on their best behavior and the downtown area never looked better. Our stay at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Convention Center, about two miles from the Mercedes Benz Stadium, was seamless and enjoyable.

Upon arriving at Centennial Park, which is really a pocket sized area, what we call in San Francisco a neighborhood park, the choices of entertainment and food were boundless. My wife and I toured the College Football Hall of Fame, CNN and walked the CNN Mall while waiting for early afternoon to walk up a gentle hill to the area where the stadium was located. Centennial Park is less than a half-mile from Mercedes-Benz Stadium and it’s a magnet for visitor and native alike.

To call this wonder a stadium doesn’t do it justice; like the Superdome of the ’70’s, this edifice makes all newer stadia look like doghouses, including Jerry’s World in Arlington and Levis Stadium in Santa Clara, Forget cold winds and blistering sunshine but also forget dark sight lines and some feelings of claustrophobia. This one and one half billion dollar building has almost everything: elevators, real department store escalators, a south end zone Skywalk, where, like in Arlington, fans can lean on the rating, complete with food and drink shelves, and watch the game, wide, pleasant concourses, lots of restrooms and dining tables, plenty of concession areas and choices. In fact, that area is set up like getting something to eat or drink at the airport. But the real kicker is the pricing. When was the last time you paid $1.50 for a hot dog, $2.00 for a soft drink, $2.00 for peanuts or popcorn, $3.00 for a pizza slice or hamburger or $5.00 for a domestic 12 ounce beer at a major sporting venue? When did said venues offer unlimited refills on all soft drinks and ice at no cost, condiment stations with freshly sliced tomatoes and prepared lettuce leaves and onions, relish, catsup, mayonnaise and two types of mustard? When’s the last time you entered a family restroom at this type of venue? If you wanted other choices of food, including wraps, tacos, mac and cheese, salads, veggie selections, desserts and a whole bunch of stuff I didn’t have time to seek out, it was there.

Now the game. Watching a huge circular video board was a fan-changing experience. Unlike most other venues, you only have to look to this one board for all of your information, whether commercial, game action or statistics. With room to roam and natural light coming into the area from the south end zone windows, which look out over downtown Atlanta, the place is just too pleasant a location not to like. Extremely accessible over normal street and highway arteries and close to great amenities, Mercedes-Benz Atlanta is what all venues should strive for if they want the fans of the ’20s to attend.

Make them comfortable, fun, affordable, awe-inspiring and……safe. No neighborhood problems here, no bad buffer zones. And convenient. No need to drive 20 to 40 miles to Santa Clara or Foxboro, no Meadowlands disaster, plenty of public transportation like Boston and New York but cleaner and virtually hassle-free.

These are things I have advocated for LSU to do but again, don’t confuse their sports success with the ability of their marketing leadership to ever take the innovative steps to make Tiger Stadium awesome outside of its fan base. Keeping the tired bench seats, steep ramps, overcrowded concourses, refusal to implement what they say they will do because of political or economic pressure will keep the stadium’s interior in the Dark Ages. All the questionnaires in the world won’t help unless the leadership opens their minds and their pocketbooks and make the changes necessary to keep this venerable stadium full on six or seven Saturday afternoons or evenings.

THE IMPEACHMENT CELEBRATION WILL BE SHORT-LIVED By: Jeff Crouere With the impeachment of President Donald Trump, the U.S. House of Representatives sent a clear message to the American people. Despite the many problems in our country, the top concern for House Democrats is to punish President Trump. His true “crime” is being an outsider, an advocate of “America First” policies and a President committed to “draining the swamp” in Washington D.C. His values make President Trump the enemy of the Deep State, the media, the Democrats and their allies in Hollywood.

After his unfair, rushed and completely partisan impeachment in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Trump haters exploded in celebration. In fact, it started before the official vote was taken. The night before impeachment, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) enjoyed drinks and dinner at Charlie Palmer, an expensive Washington D.C. steak house. Presumably, this solemn occasion did not prevent Schiff from partying with friends.

On impeachment day, the so-called somber attitude of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her House Democratic colleagues was just a façade. Pelosi wore black on impeachment day to try to convince Americans that she was “sad” about the proceedings; however, Democrats were downright giddy about impeaching President Trump. Right after an article of impeachment was passed, House Democrats started cheering. It was so inappropriate that Pelosi was forced to shut down the celebration with a stern and admonishing stare.

After both articles of impeachment were passed, without a single Republican voting in support, there was no stopping the rejoicing among members of the left-wing media. Five liberal activists masquerading as journalists from the Washington Post enjoyed a festive meal with pints of beer and spinach dip. On Twitter, reporter Rachel Bade, who also contributes to the progressive cable news network CNN, shared a photo of the group with the title “Merry Impeachmas.”

In response to this post, the online criticism from Trump supporters was fierce. Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted, “Ladies & gentlemen, your fair and objective press corps in action! What a joke.” The President’s Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted, “Fair & balanced journalism everyone. Democracy dies over chips & guac.”

The condemnation was certainly warranted. The media celebration shows that these journalists are anything buy fair and objective. Their liberal agenda is apparent from the biased coverage of President Trump. No other politician in American history has received such unfair treatment from our supposedly neutral journalists.

These Democrats will regret their insistence that the President be impeached, for the entire sordid affair will only guarantee his second term. Current polls show that most of the American people do not approve of the Trump impeachment and do not want to see the President removed from office.

As he runs for a second term, the President will use impeachment as a political weapon to wield against his Democratic Party opponents. Whether you are slipping into routine, trying something new, or looking for a new gardening project to involve the kids, growing Irish potatoes is always an exciting endeavor in the vegetable gardening. The month of January is the calendar reminder that signals the time to start planting the famous tubers to get a spring harvest. Soon you will begin seeing seed potatoes for sale at feed stores and garden centers. Seed potatoes are no different from the potatoes found in the produce section at your local supermarket. The only difference is that they are specifically grown to start new plants. ‘Norland,’ ‘Red LaSoda,’ and ‘Red Pontiac’ are Will Afton recommended red-skinned varieties. Some recommended white-skinned varieties include; ‘Atlantic,’ ‘LaChipper,’ ‘Kennebec,’ and ‘Norchip.’

Prepare seed potatoes by storing them in a cool, dark place (50-60°F) for about a week. An enclosed bag stored in the garage during this time of year works well. Proper storage helps increase sprouting of the eyes so that you can easily see them. The eyes of potatoes are botanically identified as nodes, the same nodes that you find along all plant stems. The potato itself is a modified stem and contains all of the same parts you would find on a stem. Cut seed potatoes into 5-6 pieces (with the goal of having at least one “eye” on each piece. Let them sit on the counter for a few days so they have a chance to harden off, giving them a better chance at survival in the garden.

Refer to the previous year’s notes and locate a section of the garden where bell peppers, eggplants or tomatoes were not grown. Along with potatoes, all of these crops are in the same family, therefor are susceptible to some of the same diseases. Proper crop rotation is an effective disease management technique. Add a few shovelfuls of organic material and cultivate the soil well to loosen the soil and improve drainage. To plant a 25ft row, dig a small trench (about 3 inches deep) from the front of the row to the back. Place seed potatoes in the trench every foot.

Incorporate ½ cup of 8-8-8 fertilizer into the backfill for each row and cover the potatoes. Don’t expect immediate growth right away due to the weather but as the days get longer and the soil gets warmer, they will start to grow. Days to harvest range from 90-115 days depending on variety so mark it in a garden journal to help estimate the best time to harvest.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. All four were adopted recently by families who wanted to give a forever home to a dog that had been rescued or surrendered because its owner could no longer care for it. Stormy and Penelope are the youngest, about 9 months. Freya is two and Hurk is three years old. Not one of them is a little puppy, but that will not prevent them from bonding quickly with their new families. Their adopters are pleased because their new pets have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, house trained, and they know basic commands. If you are considering opening your heart and home to a homeless dog or cat in the New Year, please contact START. We have some rescues we would like for you to meet.
