The holiday season has always been a mixed bag for me. It has meant lots of presents as my birthday, Thanksgiving and Christmas come within five weeks of each other but it also has been a sad time because of family losses and disconnects through the years that become more focused during the end of the year. Ten years ago, I lost the sparkling personality of my wife’s uncle Al, who was always a positive soul and as New Orleans as it gets. Joking, football, family get-together …all were fun. But Al became a victim of cancer which moved quickly through his body following hurricane evacuations in the summer of 2004 and by Thanksgiving he was gone.

About 21 years ago, a local man approached us about delivering our paper. He was looking for part-time work and we felt an immediate kinship with him. His name was Bill Bindewald. Bill lived in Pearl River and was an old-school guy. He believed in working for a living and making sure his role was satisfactory to the people giving him a paycheck. Bill parlayed his start with us into a number of delivery jobs in the New Orleans area. “Distributed by Bill Bindewald” was a common line in many publisher’s boxes. He also helped mailing services with their work and more importantly, helped anyone who needed help.

Last year, Bill suffered a massive heart attack in Ocean Springs, Mississippi in June. He nearly died but a fine team of paramedics rushed him to the local hospital. Bill stayed there for more than two months, on IVs and feeding tubes, unable to talk for six weeks. He returned home in late August and returned to work in October, never missing a beat on how to do his job.

Last week, things caught up to Bill. He was admitted to Louisiana Heart Hospital with a serious blood condition which at publication time still wasn’t diagnosed…but it wasn’t leukemia. Bill had several health issues and his white blood cells were not being produced. As I write this, I said goodbye to Bill who passed away on November 24, 2014.

Volunteer elves are needed for toy assembly on Friday, December 12th, at Slidell Junior High Gymnasium. We will begin at 6pm, setting up tables, moving toys from the “North Pole”, and assembling everything from kitchen sets to bicycles. Service hours are available!

A “real” Christmas tree, like a bouquet of flowers, likes to be cool and out of drafts.

Immediately upon its arrival at your home, make a fresh, straight cut (1/4 inch is enough) across the base of the trunk. Then place the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered area until you are ready to bring it indoors for mounting and trimming. Avoid letting the fresh cut dry out, because it will restrict subsequent water uptake.

But a tree stand that has a reservoir that hold a lot of water. Keep the reservoir filled, because a dry tree not only loses its needles and attractiveness, but it also becomes a fire hazard.

A Christmas tree may absorb a gallon of water the first 24 hours after mounting and several quarts a day thereafter, according to industry experts.

Locate the tree away from sources of heat, such as fireplaces, space heaters and television sets. Do not place it under a central space heaters and television sets. Do not place it under a central heating vent, because this accelerates the drying process.

In addition to selecting shrubs for specific sites based on adaptability, shrubs can be chosen for certain characteristics or landscape purposes. These may include growth habit, flowering, growth rate, foliage characteristics or ability to attract wildlife.
