WHY CAN’T NEW ORLEANS DO IT?

0 A recent mini-vacation to Asheville, North Carolina following a similar short stay in Savannah last year got me curious: How can two other Deep South cities, one with similar ethnic and geographical parallels to New Orleans and the other a sleepy backwater mini-city only 30 years ago, both surpass The Big Easy in ambiance, education, quality of life and…wait for it…safety to its average citizens and visitors?

Unlike Atlanta, neither one is a hub. Unlike Atlanta, both are culinary destinations, not as great as New Orleans but with more than 600 independent restaurants, bars and bistros, Asheville has the chops to compete per capita in Asheville, NC the kitchen with New Orleans.

And unlike New Orleans, you can be assured of a gun-free, dangerfree experience. Same goes with shopping. And touring the town.

Asheville doesn’t have quite the history of New Orleans, but their old cemeteries are not being challenged by their new ones for the most occupancy either.

Words to GREAUX by IMPATIENS FOR SUN AND SHADE

The very common summer annual, Impatiens walleriana, is well known amongst southern gardeners. They go by several different names like “Busy Lizzies”, “Patience Plants”, but most of us just refer to them as “Impatiens”. They are prized for their long-lasting beauty during the summer in shadier areas of the garden. Impatiens have been available to gardeners for a long time and because of this you will find several different varieties at the garden center. Most impatiens, including Super Elfin, Dazzler, and Fiesta will require but full to part shade but with the addition of SunPatiens gardeners can now grow impatiens in the sun. Super Elfin and Dazzler varieties are the basic form of the plant.

Will Afton The flower colors come in white, pink, red, purple, and everything in between. The Fiesta variety has beautiful rose like flowers and comes in various shades of red, pink, white. All three varieties with get about 12 inches tall and wide so look to plant them 12 inches apart. Unlike the previous three, the SunPatien can grow in sunny locations. They also produce a larger plant, reaching heights up to 2 ½ feet at the end of the growing season. So increase your plant spacing to 18 inches to accommodate. The flowers come in white, red, pink, and orange. Check out your local nursery to see what is available in your area.

Some Southern cities, like Memphis, ride a progressive Savannah, GA roller coaster of development and change, but no one travels to Memphis for Beale Street, the restaurant scene or historical architecture. It’s still a dangerous city, in some ways even meaner than New Orleans and the Peabody and dry barbecue cannot erase the seediness of its downtown, especially the area south of Beale Street. Nashville, on the other hand, has most of the plusses of Atlanta without most of the endless urban sprawl. Charleston, a city midway between the decadence of New Orleans and the cutting edge of Savannah, has its cautions as well, but not where tourists travel and locals consider safe areas.

Savannah has the history factor of New Orleans and Charleston, but is not so married to its historical preservation that it cannot bend the rules a bit to allow the spirit of old Savannah to meld with the millennial vibes of a town still able to attract and retain young folks, not only with food, drink and festivals but meaningful careers and no glass ceilings to bump against. New Orleans, on the other hand, cannot escape the culture of corruption that has been its calling card for most of its existence. You’re not part of the fabric here, boy? Go away, unless you have a lot of money. Hell, we ran Walt Disney out of here nearly 50 years ago because this Cali“foreign”ian wanted to put some silly ol’ theme part in our eastern swamps without letting the politicos “wet their beaks”. But eleven years ago, Katrina wetted the beak of all of New Orleans East, so perhaps the rejection from the 1960s’ which led to Disney World and its sister theme parks locating outside of Orlando in the 1970’s and 1980’s might have been for the best.

ORGANIC PEST CONTROL IN THE GARDEN

Organic gardening is slowly becoming a way of life for many gardeners. Whether you want to stop using chemical pesticides or to start growing with a more natural approach, organic gardening can be enjoyed by many. One of the major challenges of growing vegetables in South Louisiana is dealing with all of the insect and disease pressures. When you walk down the garden aisle at one of the big home improvement stores you are bombarded with all kinds of products labeled to control insect and disease pests. If you look carefully, you will find several organic approved products that will help you stand a chance amongst all those pests. Bacillus thuringiensis is a naturally occurring bacterial organism commonly referred to as Bt, dipel, or thuricide. It is highly effective on all caterpillar pests. It must be ingested by the caterpillars in order to work properly so be sure to coat the leaves where young caterpillars are eating. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one our retired K9s, K9 Sarge. Sarge was recently diagnosed with a tumor on his heart and died early Saturday morning (7/23/16) at his home.

Sarge’s handler, Sergeant Kevin Rea said, “His mind was still sharp as a tack, and his body was still able, but of all things, it was his wonderful heart that failed him. He passed with the same bravery and courage that he showed everyday working beside me as my partner.”

Throughout their seven year partnership, Sarge sniffed out illegal narcotics, tracked down criminals, and conducted countless public demonstrations.

Sarge loved his job, and served the citizens of our community, but most of all was a valued member of the department and the Rea family.
