GRASSHOPPERS EMERGE THIS TIME OF YEAR

It’s the time of year when people begin to notice hordes of black grasshoppers moving across the landscape. This insect is the eastern lubber grasshopper-a grasshopper which can cause important economic damage in some years. The grasshopper occurs throughout South Louisiana as far north as Alexandria, as well as further north into the Red River Valley. Serious outbreaks most often occur in the river parishes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The eastern lubber grasshopper is an occasional pest of citrus, cultivated crops and landscape ornamentals.

Normally, this grasshopper seems to prefer open woods, weedy fields and weedy roadside vegetation. But in some situations these grasshoppers may spill over into yards and gardens in residential areas. The eastern lubber may survive the winter in Louisiana as it does in Florida, but only in very low numbers. The grasshopper produces one generation per year with the eggs beginning to hatch in the early spring. The immature grasshopper is referred to as a nymph, and nymphs grow into adults through a series of five molts. While the length of these nymphal stages varies, each stage averages 15 to 20 days.

The adult grasshoppers begin to appear later in the summer. Then after mating, the adult female will deposit egg masses in the soil. Each egg mass contains about 50 eggs, and each female will lay about three egg masses, which remain in the soil through the fall and winter before beginning the cycle again when they hatch out in the spring of the following year.

The nymphs of the eastern lubber are completely black with one or more yellow orange stripes. They are smaller than the adults and lack wings. There are two color phases of the adults, which are about two and a half inches in length. The light color phase adults are a dull yellow with varying degrees of black spots and markings. The dark color phase adults resemble the nymphs in that they are nearly entirely black with a few yellowish marks.

The wings of the adults are only about half the length of the abdomen. They cannot fly and can jump only short distances. These grasshoppers are rather clumsy and travel by walking and crawling. Insecticides such as Dursban, Orthene and Sevin (carbaryl) will control grasshoppers and can be used in lawns and non-crop areas.

When controlling grasshoppers in food crops, gardens and ornamentals, check the insecticide label to make sure the crop or plant is listed on the label. In general, the grasshopper nymphs are much easier to control than the adults with most insecticides. Also, since this grasshopper cannot fly, perimeter and border treatments can be effective in reducing migration into desirable areas.

NURSE NEW PLANTINGS THROUGH FIRST SUMMER

Home gardeners who have made major plantings in the landscape, such as trees and shrubs, should be mindful that the first summer of growth is often the most critical to survival for such greenery. Plants which make it through the first six months from spring to the cooler months of fall will usually survive in fine fashion, but extra care must be provided during this critical period.

Newly-planted trees and shrubs, as well as some ground covers, do not have root systems developed sufficiently during the first few months after transplanting to vigorously support the upper portion of the plant. One critical moisture stress in the spring or summer could lead to an early demise for such a plant.

Begin the spring with a good mulch around all new plantings. Spreads six to eight inch cover of pine straw, leaves, bagasse or other organic matter under a new plant. A good mulch reduces soil temperature, prevents sudden changes in soil temperature, and most important, it will conserve moisture in the soil. A mulch will also reduce competition for soil nutrients from weeds.

Since Louisiana often experiences some high winds, large trees should be staked in some fashion to keep them upright and to prevent much movement. More trees are lost by winds loosening the trunk of a tree from its roots than by any other manner. Very little fertilizer is needed for a new plant during its first year. If a gardener has provided a good planting bed with good top soil, organic matter and sand, plants should be able to make it for several months on their own.

However, a light application of fertilizer in mid-summer should prove beneficial.

THE LAWN: FRIEND OR FOE?

Many homeowners see a lawn only as a chore; to fertilize is to have to mow more often.There are some drawbacks to having a healthy, vigorously growing lawn, but there are some very positive trade-offs, too.The beauty and peacefulness of a nice lawn have always been valued by man down through the ages. For urban dwellers and rural residents alike, a well-kept lawn creates a feeling of serenity and a link with nature.Landscapes around homes and businesses always leave favorable impressions. A well-kept lawn increases the value of property by six percent, which can make the home and grounds worth more if you put it on the market.

Another benefit is the cooling effect grass has on the air, particularly around the home. Grass helps reduce air conditioning costs and makes outdoor activities, particularly in hot and steamy Louisiana, much more pleasant.Oxygen given off by a 50-foot square of turfgrass is sufficient for a family of four. Studies also have shown that noise pollution is reduced by a healthy lawn, that grassy slopes can lower traffic noise by as much as nine decibels.Man’s environment is maintained in various ways by grass. It filters and cleans the air, lessens the loss of soil into surface water, and the moisture level is maintained as water filters down to the grass’s root system. A healthy turf extracts minerals that might otherwise pollute the ground water.Other positives include the lawn acting as a firebreak between burning material and the homestead. And, generally, litter is less likely to be thrown on well-maintained turf.

Aside from being essential to many sports such as golf, turf enhances sporting activities by offering a safe and softer playing surface. Good turf reduces injury in athletics. Joggers and walkers are much less likely to become foot sore and leg weary on turf than on harder surfaces. With all this going for it, turfgrass deserves a place of respect for what it contributes to our quality of life. Simple guidelines to the establishment and maintenance of a healthy lawn are available through the county agent’s office.

TIGERS ARE SETTLING FOR SECOND BEST…OR WORSE.

Last week’s three-game College World Series appearance by the LSU Tigers in Omaha was the latest in a series of athletic performances which has the school’s reputation a bit tarnished. Earlier in June, the Lady Tigers softball team put up a great end of season effort before falling to eventual repeat women’s softball champion Florida in Oklahoma City, where only the weather was hotter than the Gators. Then the men’s team, ranked number one nationally for the past six weeks, took another Omaha nosedive and lost to a fine TCU squad twice to be sent home while last year’s championship series between Vanderbilt and Virginia plays itself out (probably with the same result as Vandy took the first game in convincing late-inning fashion Monday night, 5 to 1).

Paul Mainieri’s team lacked the pitching necessary to win in today’s CWS atmosphere and his most balanced hitting club lost its mojo in Omaha, even though they were the leading hitting team by average entering their third and final game against TCU at the CWS.

Now the Tiger baseball team faces a major position player rebuild as all but one starter left the program through graduation or signing a professional baseball contract. Mainieri has a major job ahead for 2016 on the field. The Tigers’ pitching should be among the nation’s best, returning both starters and all but one thrower from the “Johnny Wholestaff” group of spot starters and relievers from this year. At least one to three of the non-starters, plus returning prospects who were injured and a couple of incoming recruits, should make this a formidable staff.

Men’s basketball may have the biggest upside. With a top five recruiting class, the men’s team should be able to overcome the loss of both of their all-SEC forwards and improve on their 20142015 record. Women’s basketball has been in a steady, slow decline for the past four or five years and nothing on the horizon seems to indicate that this trend will change in the near future.

Men’s outdoor track finished in the top four at Eugene last week, but it wasn’t that long ago that the men’s team would take both the indoor and outdoor track titles, along with the women. LSU track has lost a little of its luster but still has a powerhouse gender set of programs.

Now let’s talk football. The Tigers go into 2015 with a major issue with their starting quarterback and two other players who seemed to ace their stupidity exams. The other two are not that important; the real knucklehead here is Anthony Jennings of the Marietta Georgia Jennings, the man who apparently combines the freshman passing skills of Jared Lee and the decision-making abilities of Jordan Jefferson and Ryan Perilloux. Jennings apparently had some personal items stolen from him; he responded by filing a police report and then allegedly kicked in the door of the perpetrator’s domicile to recover the goods. Jennings days appear to be numbered even though he had no problem with 9-1-1. The Tigers, in their incredible offensive way (no pun intended) have convinced a former starting quarterback from Purdue to sit out a year and then join the Tigers as they prepare for the 2016 season. By that time, Leonard Fournette will have declared for the draft and several of the Tigers’ outstanding young but unfulfilled receivers will have left for programs where they can actually catch a pass from time to time. Meanwhile, Coach Miles continues to bedazzle the fan base (isn’t bedazzling passe’?) with his abiility to recruit and underachieve, using good pal Cam Cameron to work diligently on an offensive program that continues to be offensive to the majority of Tiger fans.

This will not be a banner year for the SEC and so the Tigers won’t be as embarrassed as they could be. But unless this program begins to coach up the great recruits they persuade to sign on the dotted line in February, the bottom line in January will continue to be second tier bowl games with lackluster if not really dumb performances. Now the Tigers will wait again while Purdue quarterback transfer Danny Etling rides the boards of Tiger Stadium this season. What do we have to look forward to? A quarterback who can average close to ten yards a completion but who was benched after five games in 2014 for a freshman quarterback and who never saw the field again on a 3 and 9 team. Maybe Miles thinks he’s the second coming of Drew Brees but Etling was beat out by a guy named Appleby (maybe Appleby’s a FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK?).

So, Tiger faithful, continue to fill the 103,000 seat Death Valley cathedral and pray that this program begins to take itself seriously again. There is an entertainment value in watching our Tigers and that value has been lessened recently, especially on the football field. Meanwhile, dream candy kiss dreams about the McNeese State Cowboys, who come galloping into Tiger Stadium this season and Syracuse, where the Tigers get to play a team they haven’t seen since Syracuse’s glory running back days of the late ‘50s and early ’60s. Wait - that’s even before the days of Bo Schembechler! That should be an inspiration for Les Miles, who seems to have more miles to go as he enters his 11th season. And like earned airline miles, they seem harder and harder to redeem for anything of value. What’s in your wallet?
