GOOD POLLINATION ESSENTIAL FOR MANY GARDEN VEGETABLES

Most gardeners hope that home-grown vegetables come off the vine perfect in every way.

That’s why most people have a vegetable garden. They not only want produce fresher than they can find in the supermarket, but they also enjoy picking it at the peak of perfection.

Perfect fruit starts with good pollination and growing conditions. Conversely, poor pollination is often the reason for misshapen fruit or no fruit set at all.

Some plants, like sweet corn, are wind-pollinated. The wind carries the pollen from the tassel to the silks. Each silk must receive a pollen grain for the kernel to fill. To achieve a good ear of corn, plant in blocky patches rather than in single rows. With this configuration, pollen from neighboring plants can help the pollination process.

Vine crops such as cucumbers, watermelons, squash and others are pollinated by insects. For fruit development, the insects must transfer pollen from male to female flowers. If the insects are not present, or it there is only one gender of flower present, generally you won’t get satisfactory fruit set.

Insecticides can be disastrous to setting vine-crop fruit if applied during the morning or peak of the day while the flowers are wide open. Pesticides should be used late in the afternoon after bee activity has slowed. This way bees are not killed by freshly laid chemicals that fall inside the flowers.

The third category of plants are pollinated by a system that uses both insects and wind. A slight breeze or disturbance by an insect on a complete flower (both genders in each) shakes pollen onto the female flower part and causes pollination.

Such environmental condition as rain, cold, wind or hot and dry weather also will create problems with flower development or pollen activity and pollination.

Some diseases attack flowers and block pollination. These are more of concern in greenhouses or damp areas.

Sometimes it is what gardeners’ do that creates barriers to nature at work. Crowded plantings, high or low extremes of fertilization and inconsistent sources of water also can lead to unsatisfactory fruiting.

NORTHSHORE MAN BOOKED ON AGGRAVATED RAPE CHARGE Sheriff Lonnie Greco announces the arrest of Jason Robert Landry, 21, of the 17200 block of East Cooper Road in Loranger, for the aggravated rape of an 8-yearold victim. The crimes are believed to have occurred about four years ago at residence in Venice.

On June 23, the victim, who is now 12-years-old, reported the allegations to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. As a result, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office (PPSO) Sex Crimes Unit immediately launched an investigation into the matter.

Investigators learned that on multiple occasions, Landry Jason Robert Landry fondled the victim and made the victim perform sex acts on him at the residence, located in the 42200 block of Boothville River Road. At the time of crimes, Landry was approximately 17-years-old.

Based on the investigation, the PPSO Sex Crimes Unit obtained an arrest warrant on Landry for the crime of aggravated rape.

On June 28, Landry was arrested by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and booked as a fugitive from Plaquemines Parish. He was later transported to Plaquemines Parish.

During an interview, Landry admitted to committing the sex acts on the young victim.

Landry remains in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office at the PPSO Detention Center in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

The PPSO believes there is a possibility of other victims Landry committed crimes against and are urging them to come forward.

Lessons from the Golf Pro A problem a lot of us amateurs have on our pitch shots and bunker shots is the tendency to fall backwards once we have made the swing. Our perception on these shots is that we have to scoop the ball out, resulting in an improper weight shift to the back foot. However, there is a trick that you should try the next time you are on the practice range to eliminate this problem. On the practice tee, as you set up, stand your back foot up on the toe before you swing. What this is doing is forcing all the weight fully on the front foot. Now, leaving the back foot straight up, practice your pitch and sand shots to get the feel of having the weight completely forward. After a few tries, you will naturally get the proper weight placement when you go back to your regular stance.
