ADVERBS ON ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST

It has come to a new low in political spinelessness when ESPN’S “brainless trust” decided to switch a part-time broadcaster, Robert Lee, to covering a game not at the University of Virginia. UVA is in Charlottesville, where you would think that nearly everything near and dear to America was on the line during a contentious meeting between supporters and opponents of Civil War statuary. It was ugly and tragic for many of the people involved but the silent sentinels in bronze and other materials were not to blame….or, should I say, their namesakes weren’t. This isn’t a diatribe about either side; this is a diatribe about the nasty vilification of a subject that should be talked out in public forums, not with signs, clubs and sharp instruments. We’ve lost most of our civility and politeness and the ability to conduct political discourse without juvenile, infantile verbalizations and actions. Don’t just blame Donald Trump for this: this has been going on for over 40 years with the gutlessness of both sides and the inability to stand up with courage instead of cowardice. I’ve said before that there are no more statesmen. Hell, there’s hardly a respectable congressional representative out there not in fear of losing his seat or party favor. And so many of our so-called captains of industry resemble that Greek captain who abandoned his ferry boat a few years ago and left the majority of his charges - his crew and passengers - to fend for themselves.

No, the real victims here are our adverbs, those descriptive words ending in -ly. You knew I’d eventual-LY get to this point (final-LY I’m here) and not quick-LY enough for most of you. First to go will be the show-stopping song from 1776, “Lees of Old Virginia”, in which Richard Henry Lee vows to get the Virginia colony to support “independency” because of all the Lees.

The rousing song quickly becomes one of the funniest numbers in any musical when Richard sings, “Here a Lee, there a Lee, everywhere a Lee a Lee” and John Adams and Benjamin Franklin ask him ‘when will you be back?’, he replies “quick-ly” and continues with a string of adverbs, all, of course, ending in -ly. The audience gets the point of the satire. Such play on words led us in the 1970’s to “Tom Swifties”, adverb puns that made this country groan for years before they merciful-ly died out: “I need something to drink” he said, dryly. “What was the name of that Snow White dwarf” she asked, happily? “I’ve having dessert,” she said, tartly. “Have you taken your last exam?” the teacher asked, finally. All will be gone forever, perhaps the only positive thing as the Politically (dang! …there’s that adverb again!) Correct Police bring us to our knees, forcefully and completely. I’m tired of being on the windward side of the political storm; I’d like to be on the leeward side for once in my life (and THAT lee is pronounced “Loo”.) Maybe the activists will consider “the lee side”, roughly defined as ‘out of the wind’, as misrepresenting the windiness of a situation and may want to rename it for one of a multitude of peace loving activists, whoever they may be. May this mess end soon. Hopefully.

Now we have to consider the natural order of this silliness and concern ourselves with not just Robert E. Lees or Robert or Bob Lees but every Lee. Even Spike Lee isn’t above reproach although he never owned a slave. He does own a coveted courtside seat at New York Knicks games and since professional basketball players could be considered chattel by some civil rights activists, Spike just may be a little guilty of supporting slavery by association and thus be accused of racism, because racism can exist within your own race (self-loathing, ya see), so little Spike may not be home free. I worked with a Bob Lee at the New York Times West Coast Edition in the early ‘60s and he couldn’t be considered a slaveowner because he worked as an associate editor for one of the most liberal newspapers in the country and worked on both the Left and Yankee Coasts. I also attended junior high school with Bob Lee, he of the NFL whose redheaded claim to fame was being the only player to suit up on five Super Bowl losers - all four Minnesota losses as the backup quarterback to Fran Tarkenton and as the team’s punter and his final year as a member of the Los Angeles Rams (the original ones) who lost to Pittsburgh in the 1980 Super Bowl. Bob is also exempt because of his San Francisco upbringing and the fact that his father was the San Francisco Bureau Chief for the Associated Press (the man who gave me my job with AP in the late 1960’s).

SPEAK SOFTLY AND CARRY A CONFUSING DEFENSE No one will confuse current LSU Defensive Coordinator Dave Aranda with his predecessor. John Chavis was a big, burly man, heavily mustached and louder than he needed to be. Aranda looks like a George Hamilton tanning protege’, an almost slightly built, totally bald, extremely cerebral and soft spoken man who could pass for a 21st century version of Yul Brynner, the 50’s actor who inspired Mr. Clean. Except on the practice field. There, Aranda takes his Brynner-like stance and barks Brynner-eske instructions to his extremely young but extremely talented and hungry players, including a number of true freshmen who will definitely see the field this year, in September. For LSU has hit the Mother Lode of linebacking talent, even though they missed out on one or two that would make this incoming group the best freshman batch of ‘backers ever to walk on a college campus football field.

Aranda really likes the motivation of his young charges. He’s the inside linebacker coach and with the talents of Jacob Phillips, Patrick Queen and Tyler Taylor inside, he has three studs 220 to 240 pounds who have certain dominant strengths. Phillips is the hitter, Taylor the thinker and Queen the versatile athlete. They are fighting for backups behind sophomore Devin White and senior Donnie Alexander. Outside linebackers are assimilating the hybrid roles of Buck and the “F-spot”, titles brought in by Aranda but hardly used last year because LSU’s two leading linebackers were the old school middle linebacker types. Arden Key, when healthy, owns the Buck position as the leading All American sack threat nationwide. At 6’6” and 265 pounds, he’s actually bigger and quicker than any recent ‘Bama linebacker. Another highly talented freshman linebacker, K’Lavon Chaisson, is a beast at 6’4” and 240 pounds. What we have here, folks, are Alabama-quality backers with more speed and versatility than Saban’s guys, albeit a little lighter than the two or more 250-260 pounders that seem to populate the Tide’s roster every year. And that doesn’t include Michael Divinity Junior, another four-star linebacker sophomore, senior Corey Thompson, a possible starter at the F-spot, Ray Thornton and Sci Martin, the joker in the deck at 6’4” and 256 pounds, the Courtney Upshaw, Dont’a Hightower and C.J. Moseley-sized LSU sophomore to pair with Key, size-wise. No Kwon Alexanders at 205 pounds but more Kevin Minter and Lamin Barrow types from a few years back but quicker.

There is more to Aranda’s defense but there’s no doubt the key is Key and his lock(er) mates.

LSU is not playing the blocks of granite at defensive tackle because there are no defensive tackles. There are a couple of converted tackles playing nose tackle, but no Booger McFarlffand in the group. Defensive end is set with senior steadiness and experience but no outrageous over-the-top crunch shown by ‘Bama last year. The secondary will have to show what it can do early and here again, young players like freshman safety Grant Delpit may be a starter over older but not necessarily seasoned veterans like Donte Jackson or Kevin Tolliver II. Huli Huli Style Hawaiian Barbeque Chicken When I moved to the Big Hawaii Island of Hawaii back in the mid 1990’s there was a particular aroma that permeated the streets with smoke, and the scent of Hawaiian style barbeque Huli Huli Chicken. Being unaware as a Haole (Hawaiian slang for white man), my friend said; “You need to taste this!” Huli Huli Style Hawaiian Barbeque Chicken became my ultimate favorite, and still to this day I get excited when I see the smoky attraction calling people in all day to purchase a whole or half chicken. Personally, I take my chicken to the beach, and devour it.

Back in the 1950’s, a man named Ernie Margado worked for Pacific Poultry, and shared barbeque with farmers with his own style of teriyaki chicken. Whatever his original recipe was the flavor of the chicken was a success. This became what is known as Huli Huli Chicken because the chicken was cooked between 2 grills, and needed flipping. Huli Huli means to turn.

Huli Huli Style Hawaiian Barbeque Chicken Recipe

Makes about 8 servings

Ingredients: 2 chicken whole – half or cut in pieces ½ cup ketchup ½ cup soy sauce ¼ cup light brown sugar ¼ cup honey ¼ cup sherry 2 tablespoons sesame oil 2 pieces of ginger root, sliced with skin on 3 cloves garlic, crushed 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes

For a nice dry rub, Google Randy’s Huli Chicken and Ribs. You can view a YouTube or you can call Randy personally, and order direct. His contact info is on the internet on Google. Randy does not have a website, but he is a 100% legitimate business.

Now, a large flatbed is parked roadside, and filled with rotisserie chicken being smoked and barbequed over wood while constantly turning. The chicken is basted throughout the cooking process, and slowly cooked.

The flavors are simple. I don’t think eating Huli Huli Chicken in Hawaii enhances the flavor, but it does lift the ambience, and authenticity.

There are dry rubs that are considered Huli Huli style.

You can find these online or if you decide to travel to Hawaii on the Big Island, there will be those wagons selling roadside barbeque yard-bird Hawaiian style. There are also wet marinades that people have created calling them Huli Huli. I’m sure these products will be close to the original flavor since the original recipe is a trade secret.

The flavors are coming from the overnight marinade, slow cooking, constant basting, and the smoky wood.

Huli Huli Style Hawaiian Barbeque Chicken is really something you must try.

You can substitute pork chops or baby back ribs for an extra appreciation for Huli Huli.

ALOHA!

Method: Marinate the chicken all night for best results or a minimum of 2 hours. Use the same marinade to baste the chicken until the chicken is more than half done, than stop.

Heat the grill with coals, and use apple wood chips for a mild flavor. If you have a rotisserie, I would definitely suggest this method of cooking for the whole chicken. If you are going to barbeque, then half chicken or cut in pieces are best so you can Huli Huli, turn.

Make sure your wood chips are soaked in water prior to putting on the grill so they burn slower. This is not a rushed cooking process so baste your chicken every 15-20 minutes to enhance the flavor. If you are using the dry rub, make sure the coals or gas grill is high enough so the flames do not burn the spices.

Once the chicken is fully cooked, allow it rest for about 10 minutes. ENJOY!

FALL VEGETABLE GARDENING Believe it or not, summer will be coming to an end in a few weeks. As the kids start going back to school, it’s time to start thinking about getting the backyard vegetable garden into shape for the fall/winter growing season.

If you have never grown a fall garden, then you should look into it. The days are shorter (literally!) and the weather is much more conducive to working outside. Whether you are an experienced gardener or just starting out, now is the time to start preparing and planting a fall vegetable garden.

Start preparing the garden by removing old mulch, unproductive plants from the previous season, and any unwanted vegetation. Sometimes plants like bell peppers, eggplants, tomatoes and okra may still be producing this time of year. Instead of pulling them up, work around them and allow them to continue. Once most of the vegetation has been removed, start cultivating the soil to prepare the planting beds. Next, start planning the layout of the garden. Start thinking of what vegetables will go where. Go ahead and take the time to make good notes. Draw a diagram and label it with the date. This information will come in handy over the years as you practice crop rotation in the garden.

Vegetables grown in the fall are different than what gardeners grow in the spring. Some crops can be grown in both spring and fall. KIDS CAN COOKToo! Microwave Mug Snacks For After School Pick Up!

Kids, grab your favorite mug to make a one dish wonder. Make sure the mug is microwave-safe, dishwasher safe and about 14 ounce size. Also, at camp, I gave my chefs a pot holder to grab the cup out of the oven, incase it was too hot. Now, when they come home from school they can make their own micro-mug treats. One of the favorites were mac and cheese. The recipe called for you to cook the noodles first in the microwave, then procede to the recipe. I recommend, cooking a batch of small pasta, shells or elbow, tossing with a little oil and keep in a container in the refrigerator . When they want to make mac & cheese, just scoop out about a forth of a cup of the cold pasta, add 2 tablespoons butter, 2 Tablespoons milk and 2 Tablespoons grated cheddar or velveta. Microwave for 1 minute, stir. Then microwave in 10 second intervals until cheesey and goey. Another favorite was egg drop soup. This is a perfect protien after school snack.

Microwave 1 cup of chicken stock for 1minute and 45 seconds. Beat a small egg in a seperate bowl. Stir broth and slowwly add add to hot broth. Microwave another 15 seconds if it cooled down and to cook egg rags. Chop in thin slices of green onions or chives. The kids used pizza cutters to safely chop their herbs. Slurp down the soup. Don’t forget, kids love ramen noodles.The internet has many mug recipes you can have fun and experiment with. They are totally tempting. This is real fast food. It is good food that fuels you fast and keeps you going. How about Pizza in a mug? Chocolate chip cookie anyone? Try all kinds of baby cakes & muffins. Breakfast in a mug. Practice some of the recipes on the weekend to find the ones that work and taste really good. Once you find your best go to recipes, you’ll be snacking in minutes- breakfast, lunch, after school and night time snacks, party snacks, rainy day snacks! CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE IN A MUG PIZZA IN A MUG 1 Tablespoon melted butter 1 Tablespoon sugar 1 Tablespoon brown sugar pinch of salt 1/8 tsp.

1 egg yolk 1/4 cup flour 2 Tablespoons chocolate chips Melt butter in the mug about 10 seconds to coat mug.

Add all ingredients except flour & chocolate chips.

Then add flour & chips Microwave for 1 minute on 80% power The top will look light & yellow & even seem slightly under cooked. But if you gently press the top and it springs back, it’s perfect. Over cooking will dry the cookie out. Just let it cool to ooey goey goodness!

Gets even better with a scoop of ice cream on top.!

4 Tablespoons flour 1/8 tsp. baking powder 1/16 tsp. baking soda 1/8 tsp. salt 3 Tablespoons milk 1 Tablespoon olive oil 1 Tablespoon tomato sauce 1 generous Tablespoon mozzarella 5 mini pepperoni In the mug, add the first dry ingredients with the milk and oil to make the dough base.

Spread the sauce over the top.

Sprinkle the cheese and pepperoni Microwave 1 minute & 10 seconds or until it rises and the toppings a bubbling. Let cool a few minutes.
