Tony’s Take UNFAIR PRESSURE BY U.S. PAPER SUPPLIER IS HURTING PRINT ADVERTISING AND INFORMATION Whether you believe in tariffs or not, the actions of a private equity firm in New York is making it harder for you to get your newspaper.

It’s not a foreign country, but NORPAC, owned by the New York suits who have no idea of what their actions do to Middle (and Upper and Lower) Americans all across this nation. This “good citizen” has forced our government, through its million-dollar lobbyists, to impose tariffs on Canadian newsprint imports This raises newsprint prices, thus cutting production, which means cutting jobs and effectiveness for advertisers and receiving the news, most of which is really not “fake”. Fortunately, most surviving newspapers offer a more than fair cost-to-impression ratio to their advertisers and the cuts are not Draconian…. yet. But wait a while, and while the nation is lulled to sleep with its $900 cellphones and $1,800 electronic gadgets, the print industry, where dedicated professionals still make every effort to report the news and the facts, will wither and die. Then, who will take the time to question, gather, probe, interview and cobble together a story that will continue to secure the foundation of an informed citizenry? A blogger? Good luck with that! Most bloggers are untrained and undisciplined and then you will really see only one side of any issue.

I started my media career in news and I feel there is still a vast majority of reporters and commentators who want and usually do the right thing. I can make a living without print but millions can’t and the loss of print is just another version of the book-burning done in 1930’s Germany. Turning one’s back on an older medium is not the answer here. Making the print industry fight fewer economic battles is part of it. Want to know what happens to information and entertainment when an element of electronic goes south on you? You’re placed in a black hole of response. It happened to me in my car when my on-board Bluetooth and information center stopped “talking” out loud. That also cuts your cellphone usage in the car. Electronic communications can be cut off swiftly with one action while print cannot. Both are needed in today’s world. If you don’t care for print, then don’t read your texts or email, because they are really print. Maybe you can communicate with emojis only. Or Facebook. “Friend the world”.

Tony’s Take IT’S PAST TIME TO RESTRUCTURE NBA AND OTHER POSTSEASON PLAY With the recent two major moves in the NBA, the Western Conference has become almost an exclusive club during the next several years of playoff games. The Golden State Warriors might have become the greatest talent and performance team of all time with the addition of Demarcus Cousins to their post position, previously the only glaring weakness on an otherwise unworldly group of superior teammates. It is almost inconceivable that this team could lose a game with four proven 20 points or greater shooters, two league MVPs, five All-Stars, the 2016-17 Defensive Player of the Year, a strong bench and a coach who seems to have the magic touch with this stable of personalities.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers added the latest and perhaps greatest talent boost free agency signing with the inking of LeBron James. James doesn’t have the cast to make a serious run at the Warriors or Houston Rockets in the foreseeable future, but in three years, this storied franchise might be back in the driver’s seat. A trio of talented youngsters, one with a pain in the backside father, and the addition of a couple of mid-level starters will see the Lakers rise perhaps into playoff contention. But the Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves are five teams ahead of the Lakers along with Houston and Golden State and that leaves precious little wiggle room for them to err in 2018-19.

However, this league plays way too many games in the postseason. In fact, a full schedule of seven-game series would require 28 postseason league games for the eventual NBA champion or nearly 35% of their regular season schedule. That’s considerably more than in the NFL, where four out of 16 regular season games would peak out at 25% for the eventual winner and only a 12% maximum in major league baseball, the longest and least taxing physical season of all.

Hockey? Not that much interest one way or another in this part of the country, but it’s similar to pro basketball and so it’s also downright boring to most sports fans who don’t care for the sport.

The NBA should simply start with four teams instead of eight in each conference and keep the average teams out of this celebration. That would be a maximum of 21 games for the eventual winner, or about 25% of the regular season, the same as it is in the equally physical NFL. But the NBA season of six full regular season months, followed by nearly two postseason months, is overkill and the better teams don’t need to prove themselves against the number eight team in their conference. The worst team in the other big two American professional sports leagues is no lower than number six (the NFL), which has to play the number three team before it has a shot at number one. In major league baseball, the number four and five teams are as low as it gets and one of those teams is eliminated in a one-game playoff.

There should also be some type of weighting system to allow the loser in a division such as the American League East this year, where the two best records in baseball reside in Boston and New York, to move around in the playoff system. Back when the Giants and Braves were both in the one league, no division National League, the Giants missed any chance of postseason play even after they won more than 100 games, because the Braves won 102 games to their 101. They were obviously the two best teams in regular season baseball (the Braves stink in the postseason) but one of them got the shaft. Either Boston or New York will receive the same treatment to a lesser degree by playing in a one-game wild card bout with a far inferior team in October. In fact, the American League in baseball has the four best teams in the professional sport this year, with New York, Boston, Houston and Cleveland and the eventual winner there will be favored in the World Series against a hardly better than average National League winner.

As summer winds down, parks and other outdoor facilities are still in peak use. A few weekends ago I went down to the lakefront for a walk.

There a nice stretch of walkway where if you plan it correctly, you can walk about a three mile loop. Everyone else was enjoying the day when I noticed something strange growing on several of the trees near the road.

Three trees were covered with a thin layer of webbing. The webbing went from about 3 feet off the ground up to about 15 feet. To an unsuspecting homeowner it looks like something is damaging the tree.

There is no need to worry about this particular insect. Unbelievably, they are actually somewhat beneficial in the landscape. Many gardeners call and email questions about this particular phenomenon and almost all of them think they have found an evil tree killer. We refer to these insects as bark lice.

Bark lice are insects in the order Psocoptera and commonly referred to as psocids. They get the nickname because of their small size, similar to how some people call aphids plant lice. Others call them tree cattle because of the way they move together. If you look underneath the webbing, you can see small brown insects traveling up and down the bark of your tree. Bark lice nymphs appear dark gray with pale yellow bands between abdominal segments. The adults have shiny black wings that are held like a tent over their abdomens. The webbing itself doesn’t cause any damage but merely provides protection from birds and other predators. Bark lice do not harm the tree. They will feed on dead bark cells, fungi, algae and other debris growing on the tree trunk. They clean the trunks of trees. This in turn makes them somewhat of a beneficial insect.

Because of their beneficial nature, I do not recommend doing anything about it. Sometimes the webbing may be unsightly. If this is the case then I would suggest using high water pressure to physically remove the webbing from the trunk. In a couple of months it will blend in well with the festivities of Halloween. Add a spooky feel to your landscape this year by leaving the bark lice alone and they’ll help decorate your yard with cobwebs and silk!
