Tony’s Take STARTING TO SEE THE NEXT PHASE OF LIFE It started with a case of the flu New Years Eve. While hanging around for a week or so, it began to affect my sinuses and also my psyche. I think I went through a spell of either anxiety or panic attacks. I pride myself on relatively good health for my age, so when these ailments visited me in January and continued into February and March, I began to worry. My wife also has been on me for years about my hearing but you can almost buy a new vehicle for what a set of “smart hearing aids” run these days and Medicare does not contribute a dime towards their cost. How can Medicare exempt hearing when its just as vital as sight and vision care is at least partially paid for by the government and its considerably less? Also, I developed a manageable case of tinnitus which had casually come into my life from time to time over the past five or ten years and is more or less a daily visitor but not intrusive to any degree.

So, I am without hearing aids but they don’t always work and the trial period is short with a Draconian price tag to boot. Summer weather means high temperatures and long days. Plants and flowers go through heat stress just as us gardeners do. People have the ability to put on sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids. Plants do not have the ability to put on sunscreen so to speak but they do take up extra water when high temperatures reach above 85°F. This is one process where gardeners can help by supplementing irrigation water. Follow some of these steps to help plants conserve water so they can get through our tough Louisiana summers.

• Plan a water conservation garden by using native plants accustomed to local ecosystems.

• Keep a close eye on your container plantings. Containers will dry out a lot faster that the soil in your flowerbed. You may need adjust your watering schedule during the summer months.

• Use proper hose attachments to make watering plants easier. A simple water breaker and wand are great tools that allow you to reach in and around potted plants. Multi-setting hose attachments provide several different water patterns that can be changed instantly.

• Check your irrigation system periodically. Make that that all connections are in good condition and that all spray heads are in working order. You also might want to increase the duration at which the system runs to compensate for longer, warmer days.

• If using a watering system on a timer, adjust the device so that it applies water early in the morning. Preventing excess moisture build up on plant foliage can help with disease prevention.

• Replenish mulch in gardens and flower beds. Mulch helps by blocking sunlight from reaching the soil surface, which in turn will prevent evaporation. This will help the soil retain more water to provide for plants.

• Do not forget about high value trees in the landscape. It times of drought (several weeks without rainfall) provide trees with supplemental irrigation. Accomplish this by using soaker hoses or a single hose set on a trickle.

• Before leaving on a weeklong vacation, thoroughly water all inside houseplants. Instead of waiting for their next watering, go ahead and soak them before go. It will buy you a couple of extra weeks.

• Check weather forecasts. Watering the garden before a rainfall can actually improve water penetration into a soil.

THE MANY FACES OF HELICOVERPA ZEA What do the cotton bollworm, corn earworm, and tomato fruitworm all have in common? They are all one in the same. It just depends on what they decide on eating. Helicoverpa zea has been causing both farmers and backyard vegetable growers problems for years. The destructive pest will feed on the pods of tomato, corn, and cotton. In cotton in will greatly reduce yields by destroying the bud before fiber development begins. In both corn and tomato, they cause severe blemishes that render the fruit to be unusable.

The adult moth of this pest is small, 0.5 to 1 inch in size, and is very bland in appearance. They make up for appearance in their excellent flying abilities, which gives them the ability to spread rather quickly. The caterpillars measure almost 2 inches long when fully grown and may come in several different colors including green, brown, pink, and yellow. In tomato, the immature caterpillar will tunnel its way into the fruit where it feeds on the developing tissue. In corn, the caterpillar feeds on developing corn kernels near the tassel end of the cob.

Control can be tricky with this pest because of the nature of how it feeds on the inside of fruits.

The first thing to consider is destroying any infected fruit before the insect can complete its life cycle, especially on tomato. Some people have found some success in killing young caterpillars on tomatoes with a dusting of diatomaceous earth. The biological pesticide Bt is labeled to kill the caterpillars and can be successful when applied properly. For chemical control, you can use carbaryl. Both carbaryl and Bt must be applied before the worm enters the tomato fruit. In corn, you must directly apply the products when the tassels develop. If you stick with it and develop a routine, control is possible.

Did a trip for Champion Charters. It was another slow day but once again a very good day out there.

We found some nice trout while not even looking for them. The reds did not disappoint us. They gave us some great action. Also good to eat. They were way up in the canes and we only found the ones that came out to move to another place. As soon as they hit they would go right back into the canes.
