It seems as though summer is already here. Our first week of 90° temperatures and its just May. As we get closer and closer to summer, gardeners will be looking to plant flowers that can withstand the brutal onslaught of long, hot summer days. With all of the different species of flowers available for use in Louisiana, some start to struggle when daytime temperatures start averaging above 85° F. The genus Salvia is interesting to study. They are a member of Lamiaceae, the mint family, which gives them opposite leaf arrangement Will Afton and square stems. Botanists have identified three different areas of origination: the Americas, the Mediterranean, and Eastern Asia. Early on, they were primarily used as ingredients in herbal remedies. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century where salvias became popular among those who garden for pleasure. Currently, Salvias are gaining popularity in niche gardening designs like butterfly, hummingbird, and pollinator gardening because of the abundance of nectar produced in flowers. If there were one plant that would represent all pollinator plants, Salvias would do it proudly.

Because of their popularity, you will find many species of Salvia available at nurseries and garden centers. Salvia spendens offer some old and new choices. Most are familiar the cultivar ‘Red Hot Sally’, a small compact plant that reaches a height around 12 inches and produces a wonderful show of bright red flowers on spikes. Another series of S. spendens is gaining some attention. The cultivars ‘Lighthouse Red’ and ‘Lighthouse Purple’ are similar in appearance to ‘Red Hot Sally’ but they get about twice the size and offer a second color option. The ‘Lyrical’ series of S. nemorosa is also interesting to note. ‘Lyrical Silvertone’ is special in that it is two toned in color with deep purple and silver flower spikes. It reaches a medium size of 24 inches tall. Salvias can also be used for height in the back of a bed or as centerpieces in the middle of large island beds. S. microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ is a larger growing species. It reaches a height around 36 inches tall and produces gorgeous red and white flowers. S. greggii ‘Flame’ is another larger growing species that reaches a similar height but produces bright red flowers.

Many of the salvias mentioned in the last paragraph will re-seed themselves at the end of the season and return the following year as newly sprouted plants. This is usually a positive characteristic of plants but sometimes re-seeding plants can move around on their own in the garden. The mealy cup sage, S. farinacea, is a root-hardy salvia that will return each year from the previous root system. There are two cultivars planted at the LSU AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station, ‘Henry Duelberg’, a purple selection and ‘Augusta Duelberg’, a white selection.

Both of which survived the winter weather event back in January of 2018.

The salvias listed in this article are only but a few that are sold at local nurseries and garden centers. You’ll have to get out and see what is available near you.

Italian Wedding Cookies are also known as Russian tea cakes, butterballs, and Mexican wedding cookies. The exact origin of the cookie is unknown, but one detail is certain, these cookies have nothing to do with Russian, Mexican or Italian cuisine. It’s said that it may have been created in Eastern Europe similar to short bread.

This recipe was donated by one of my chefs who is Italian. I watched him prepare this exact recipe numerous times with success. The recipe amount will be much larger than usual mostly due its title, Italian Wedding Cookies. I certainly hope many people attend the wedding, therefore eating all the cookies.

The Mexican wedding cookie has anise in the recipe which gives that particular cookie its distinct scent. The Russian tea cake has nuts (walnuts), but pecans or sliced almonds can be used as a substitute. This recipe being from Louisiana uses pecans. The Italian wedding cookie is similar to the Russian version using nuts, and all the other standard ingredients, flour, butter, vanilla and sugar.

The end result is best when these cookies are dusted heavily with powdered sugar. They are baked at a moderate temperature. The powdered sugar does its final job. Without the powdered sugar, it’s simply a boring butter cookie in my opinion.

Serve them with your favorite tea or coffee, and you have a wonderful sweet snack. ENJOY!

Tony’s Take TIGER TRACKS Billy Cannon and Joe Burrow.

Before there was Billy Cannon, there were never 60,000 LSU Tiger fans in the stands on a Saturday night. LSU football was just okay. It had a number of All Americans like Gaynell Tinsley, Ken Kavanaugh Sr. and Sid Fournet, But it had no panache. Hiring Coach Paul Dietzel and recruiting the “strongest fast man in the world” led to the panache. The Go Team, White Team and Chinese Bandits were the most famous collegiate football squads perhaps in history. And Cannon, one of the last of the two-way players, was their leader.

Everyone around here knows the story. Cannon agreed to attend LSU and spent much of his time promoting ticket sales for folks to come out and watch him. Cannon was part of a great backfield which included Johnny Robinson, who became an All-Pro with Kansas City and J.W. Brodnax at fullback and won the national championship in 1958 with an undefeated season, His return of a punt against #3 ranked Ole Miss on Halloween Night 1959 remains one of the defining collegiate football plays of all time. Fog, rain and #1 LSU won the game, 7-3 with Cannon’s run and even more important, a four-down goal line stand that kept Ole Miss from scoring a touchdown and gave rise to the South End Zone legend, where thousands of screaming Tiger fans urged on the Tigers to stop Ole Miss All American Charlie Flowers.

Billy Cannon was 80. His stats, like most stats from the era before 1970, were not impressive.

But Cannon was one of the few players from that era who could start for most teams in college football today. His training and abilities were unmatched in the ’50s and few athletes today could equal them. As play-by-play announcer J. C. Politz said on that Saturday night, “Billy Cannon….great All American!”

Joe Burrows. LSU has never had a quarterback with such a name. Never had a Joe back of center, like Joe Willie Namath, Joe Theismann and Joe Montana. Tiger fans can only hope this Joe can emulate one of those three other Joes. Lately, the Tigers have had a bunch of stiffs back of center. This year, three underclassmen underwhelmed a sparse Spring game exercise, even though they scored eight touchdowns as quarterbacks. Now comes Burrow, a Mr. Ohio prep player, three year graduate student with two years of eligibility left. Injuries led him to leave the Ohio State Buckeyes, where his extraordinary high school statistics were nearly matched by his college numbers. A dual threat QB, this Joe is odds-on to win the starting role at LSU. Also look for Myles Brennan and perhaps Lowell Narcisse to transfer out of Baton Rouge. No big loss in either case. One quarterback is the typical stiff drop back passer not beneficial to LSU game plans and the other is an oft-injured lefty who never became the Ryan Perrilloux clone that so many Tiger fans wanted to see.

BELLA Calico sisters Zoey and Bella are almost twins, but Bella has more orange on her face and Zoey has more black. These 8 month old kittens became homeless recently when their owner passed away.

Although they get along well with each other, they are not inseparable. Zoey does well with other cats, but Bella does not, so a home without other cats is recommended for her. COMET Sophia is a beautiful little reddish-tan puppy, probably a feist, a type of dog that is often a rat terrier-beagle mix. Her lovely color indicates there must be another breed in the mix. While we don’t know her exact family history, we can say that Sophia is one of the sweetest little dogs we have ever met. She is about 8 months old and weighs 25 lbs. Sophia has been spayed and vaccinated, and she is on heart worm prevention. Sophia loves to play with the other dogs in her foster home.
