TIGERS TAME GATORS AND AUBURN BUT NOT MUCH MORE HAS REALLY CHANGED

The LSU Tigers looked somewhat like a middlin’ SEC team October 7th in Gainesville against another SEC also-ran missing a number of footballers and future felons. Florida showed up with less than a full squad along with several parole officers in training because where else in north-central Florida can a law enforcement trainee be exposed to so many high profile miscreants than in Gainesville?

LSU kept its penalty average among the nation’s highest as this squad will never be confused with a highly disciplined organization. Blame the youth and what you will but the first thing a player should learn in a program like this is to do what the coaches say to do and act like they have left high school far behind. Nick Saban does an excellent job in Tuscaloosa; if a player falls out of favor there and is left to his own devices in that lovely metropolis, they will never misbehave again if given a second chance. No one has ever written a catchy tune about this ‘Bama town and for good reason. Except for the Tide, find one.

If you were in Tiger Stadium for the Auburn game, the first half would have left you with little faith that the Tigers would be able to stay with the Auburn Plain War Tigers (take your choice for your preferred mascot) and LSU wold lose their third game of the year. But a simple halftime defensive adjustment, a sorely needed IV for defensive tackle stalwart Rashard Lawrence and an emerging leadership troika of Devon White, Danny Etling and D.J. Chark showed the next step of a maturing team following the previous week’s win over Florida. The Tigers were able to dominate the second half for the first time against a top ten opponent in the past several years and Auburn left Baton Rouge with a more complete loss than their failure against Clemson in the early part of the year.

Last weekend, the Tigers returned their vaunted running game as Derius Guice had his third 250-yard plus game and the Tigers rolled over Ole Miss. 40 to 24. That’s not going to be nearly enough to beat the Crimson Tide, however. The Tigers looked mediocre in their wideout passing game and I still can’t figure out why this team can’t get a confident passing attack going. It’s too late to set one up for Tuscaloosa and so the Tide will stack the box and the ghost of Les Miles will come out as the Tigers fall behind and probably lose by three touchdowns. I predict 42 to 17. It’s a maddening thing to watch LSU go through the same drill every year and this year they have a true freshman quarterback under wraps because the Tigers are afraid to lose and not confident enough to put a team away. While ‘Bama continues to roll and the Georgia Bulldogs still look like the main obstacle in the way of another Tide championship, the LSU Tigers firmly planted their flag in the middle of the SEC fray. The development of three true freshmen offensive linemen, and several linebackers and defensive backs has now placed the Tigers in at least the role of spoiler, third best team in the conference and moving forward as the favorite in their remaining games except for Alabama. If the Tigers can win out, they might not have a chance to play for a national championship because of their embarrassing losses to Mississippi State and Troy. But if they defeat Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas A&M and Georgia in the SEC championship game, the Tigers might get lucky like in 2007 and back into one of the four semifinal games. It looks tough with Alabama, Penn State, TCU, Georgia, Wisconsin and Miami still undefeated with several others with only one loss, including Oklahoma, Clemson and Ohio State. The gap is so great between Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and now LSU and everyone else except Missouri, whose ineptness puts these paper tigers in a class by themselves than no other SEC game really makes a difference.

Florida, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee…really, is there much difference between those SEC league teams?

This year’s Alabama isn’t a super version Alabama team but it doesn’t have to be. Neither is Georgia, but they are solid both offensively and defensively, have good coaching and exhibit ‘Bama-style discipline. Both teams have the necessary qualifications to remain top 10 teams. No one else in the league deserves even a smell of that rarified air, including LSU at this stage. This is an excellent season to actually go out and enjoy these contests and not be concerned with anything else. Because there will be nothing else to be concerned about. If the Tigers can beat Saban in November, you can get your hopes up then and get all stressed and nervous. Until that day, pretend you are at a Saints game.

We talk about chocolate all the time in my articles , but do you know where this mood saver came from? In this issue I would like to tell you little bit about chocolate history and how it is made.

Legend has it that the Quetzalcóatl brought cocoa with the Toltec peoples’ god in the north of present-day Mexico. Xocolatl was a drink consisting of husked beans ground in a mortar to an oily, gritty paste. It was flavored with spices such as with maize meal being added to fill it out. This cocoa paste was formed into small cakes that were then dried. These cakes were broken and whisked in hot water to make xocolatl Montezuma, the Aztec ruler, had a great trea of stored cocoa beans.

According to legend, he drank 50 cups of chocolate a day served in cups of pure gold.

Christopher Columbus was the first European to and on island of Guanaja off the coast of Honduras. Columbus took some of these beans back to Spain. Being a trader, Cortés was quick to appreciate how money could be made out of cocoa. The Spanish established a monopoly on the import of cocoa, which they retained for 80 years.

There is so much more interesting facts from the history that woud not even fit in a book so I picked to ones most interesting and significant to me, but you are free to search the internet for more.

It is always fascinating to me how foods and its use got discovered and our ancestors found a way how to make a best out of the ingredient and chocolate is definitely one of my favorites.

I found an interesting saying on the internet claiming that chocolate is in fact vegetable. It says ,, Chocolate comes from bean. A bean is a type of vegetable .

Chocolate is a vegetable. Vegetables are good for you.

It did make me laugh but a lot of it is true. Chocolate can be beneficial for your health and in fact it does come from tree and based on newest research some consider it vegetable and not fruit.

The plant family The cacao tree, Theobroma cacao, belongs to the cacao around the Orinoco Sterculia ceae, and originates from the forest area with rivers. The tree prefers a temperature of at least 75°F heavy, evenly distributed rainfall. When cultivated, the cacao plants are first nurtured in small baskets and planted out after 18 months. A cacao tree starts to bear fruit during the fifth year and is at its most productive at ten years factories today come from cacao.

The cocoa beans used in chocolate trees in the so-called cacao belt. This stretches right across America, Asia and Africa between latitudes 20° north and 200 south. The cacao tree grows in a tropical climate together with vanilla, sugar cane and coffee bushes. The tree is often planted beside rivers or on slopes, shaded from sun and wind by banana trees, mango trees and coconut palms nitrogen. Irrigation The soil must be rich in potassium, magnesium and is necessary if rainfall is insufficient reaching about A three-year-old tree is between 10 and 17 feet high, 27 feet at ten years. The bark, which thickens has a beautiful dark brown color. A cultivated cacao tree has a life of about 30 years, while a wild tree can live up to 50 years. Its roots reach deep and wide round the tree. The ideal altitude for cultivating cacao is between 1,200 and 1,800 feet above sea level. The tree begins to flower at three years, blooming twice a thereafter. The beautiful red and white flowers have neither scent nor taste. Only one in a thousand flowers bears fruit. Depending on the type of tree, it takes four to eight months before the flower becomes a podlike fruit, which grows directly on the trunk The ellipse-shaped pod grows to about 8 inches and is firstly orange before maturing to a yellow, copper and orange or russet color The pod has a 1 inch leathery outer shell inside which is a sweet, jelly like pulp containing about 5 60 cacao beans.

When the pods have ripened they are cut down. A cacao tree will normally yield about 50 pods giving about four kilos of beans.

For those looking to work in the garden this fall, try experimenting with a few varieties of lettuce this season. Lettuce is one of the easiest crops to grow and everybody knows that there is nothing better than a salad of fresh salad greens harvested directly from the garden, especially those looking for healthy choices as the holiday season approaches.

One of the most interesting aspects of growing lettuce is how wide Will Afton their variety and how distinct their differences. There are four different types of lettuce grown throughout the world: crisphead, butterhead, romaine, and leaf lettuce.

Crisphead, the most common type of lettuce, is a dense, head-forming plant similar to that of a cabbage, and it is the only type of lettuce that does not produce a red leaf. While butterhead lettuce, or bibb lettuce, also produces a head, it is not as densely formed, and it produces soft, pliable leaves in various shades of green and red. Romaine lettuce also produces a dense head, but differs in shape due to its elongated form. Romaine comes in several different colors and is prized for its thick, mid-rib, which adds a desired crunchiness to the leaf. Leaf lettuce types produce a loose rosette of leaves that form a mound. The texture of leaf lettuce can be coarse to very fine and comes in multiple shades and combinations of red and green.

Like all other vegetable crops, lettuce has a few insect and disease pests that can be a problem during the growing season. Aphids, armyworms, cutworms, cucumber beetles, and whiteflies are all known pests that attack lettuce. Some of the diseases which occur on lettuce include: alternaria leaf spot, downy mildew, and rhizoctonia bottom rot. To help discourage these pest issues, it is recommended to follow proper plant spacing requirements and plant the recommended varieties of lettuce that will successfully grow in Louisiana’s unique climate. Plant spacing will depend on time of type of harvest. If baby greens are desired, seeds can be planted close together but to grow heads of lettuce plant every 12 inches to insure sufficient room for the plant to mature.

Judging by the huge numbers of high blood pressure medications being prescribed today - especially to older adults - high blood pressure seems to have reached epidemic proportions.

The catch is that these medications do not promote healing nor do they prevent heart attacks and strokes. Phthalides also have been reported to lower blood pressure and promote a healthy circulatory system by reducing what are known as stress hormones. This biennial vegetable also contains high amounts of magnesium, potassium, and calcium. The beneficial effect of these minerals in celery serves to calm the nervous system, automatically counterbalancing stress levels.

Coconut water Coconut water is another highly effective natural remedy for lowering blood pressure in patients with hypertension. A study published in the West Indian Medical Journal looked at whether coconut water and mauby (a tropical drink made from buckthorn tree bark) were effective in treating high blood pressure. Researchers tested the blood pressure of twenty-eight individuals for two weeks without treatment, and then again for two weeks during treatment.

Participants were divided into four groups: one control group received only bottled drinking water; one group received coconut water; one received mauby; and the last was given a combination of coconut water and mauby. Each participant drank about 10 ounces of their assigned formula twice daily.

Although it’s easy to tell the difference between drinking water and coconut water or mauby, none of the participants knew exactly what they were drinking or that it could have an effect on their blood pressure. The findings revealed interesting results. In the coconut water group, 71 percent of participants showed a marked decrease in systolic blood pressure and 29 percent showed a significant decrease in diastolic pressure. The group drinking mauby or the combination of coconut water and mauby also showed significant improvement.

The group drinking ordinary water actually showed an increase in systolic pressure in 57 percent of the participants, with no significant change in diastolic pressure.

These results may be explained by coconut water’s unique nutritional content. Coconut water is rich in potassium, magnesium and vitamin C. All of these nutrients are linked to health benefits, including lowering high blood pressure. They also make coconut water an excellent way to hydrate your body without depleting vital minerals. Many health-conscious athletes choose coconut water over commercial sports drinks to replenish water, minerals and glycogen lost during heavy exercise.

Enjoy the ride also. Bring earplugs to the stadium to drown out the (c)rap and be grateful that a hurricane didn’t disrupt this season. Hey, there was a time that Tiger fans attended games for the outing and the opportunity. Just remember that for your next sojourn into Baton Rouge. The campus looks amazing, fans are actually being accommodated in many venues and unlike some stadia in the league, you really don’t have to worry about fighting your way out of the venue or getting into a hassle returning to your car.

Having no in-state rival has its advantages. And speaking of venues, the school has hit a home run with its Skyline Club section. Taking an elevator to your seat in Tiger Stadium is a rarity but here you have the opportunity. There are two buffet lines with free food for the entire game, one free drink ticket (we’ll see about getting that upgraded to three tickets), bottled alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks plus a regular concession stand. Limited seating (about 1,250 bench seats and handicap designated areas) mean that there is little wait time for restroom facilities and food. However, drink service speed is still an issue.

There is plenty of room to walk about or you can lean on built-in eating bars overlooking the field and find shade on the north side of the walls of the various facilities, plus use drinking fountains and have access to a phenomenal set of views to the north and south.

Four sets of stairs for quick exit to the bottom (takes a while, though) plus the two elevators and a building housing the elevators are featured. Fans can use the exits to seek shelter from the nonexistent rain and lightning in Tiger Stadium plus duck into the elevator building waiting area. Never thought I’d see this day. Nice decision, LSU!

Reflections From the Past ORIGINAL “YAT” WAS A CLASS ACT Growing up in San Francisco, my first professional sports allegiance was to the 49ers. Those were the teams of “Hustlin” Hugh McElhenny, Joe “The Jet” Perry, Billy Wilson, R. C. “Alley Oop” Owens, Bob St. Clair and Leo “The Lion” Nomellini. They lost more than they won when the NFL only had 12 teams and the highest paid player only made $25,000 per year. Their leader was a prematurely balding man from Marshall, Texas, with the most unlikely name of Yelberton. As you might imagine, Yelberton hated that family-given name and his middle name, Abraham, wasn’t one he cottoned to either (although he could have been called Abe).

No, Yelberton Abraham Tittle decided in school that he would go by his initials, Y.A. Now, there’s never been a Yelberton or a Y.A. in any other professional sports.

So Y.A. Tittle would always remain unique. A talented East Texas quarterback, Tittle attended LSU after World War II after a brief fling with the idea of attending the University of Texas. Tittle would become a folk hero at LSU because of several plays, including an interception against Hall of Fame quarterback Charles Conerly of Ole Miss and Tittle’s legendary 70-yard run holding the ball with one hand and his football pants with the other, having had his belt pulled off by an opposing player.

Tittle had two nicknames in San Francisco: “The Bald Eagle”, because of his head, naturally, and “Colonel Slick”, for his commanding presence and again, his shiny pate.

Tittle holds one NFL record of tossing seven touchdown passes in one game. It was amazing he completed passes at all given the sorry nature of his offensive linemen not only in San Francisco but in New York, where he finished his career. Tittle probably completed more passes running from blitzing linemen and linebackers than any otherquarterback in NFL history.

One of my first games I attended at the old Kezar Stadium where the 49ers played (it also was used for high school and college games. I played a couple of games there in high school.) was against the Chicago Cardinals who featured San Francisco high school and college legend Ollie Matson. The 49ers were their usual miserable selves, losing 33 to 3 as kicker Gordy Soltau recorded the only points for the home team. After the game, I waited with other young Niner fans at the exit from the locker room for autographs.

None of the players were in the mood to sign anything and I especially remember Tittle not even saying a word as he left the facility. I always resented the fact that I never received any autographs (none of us did).

A few years ago, I was at the P-Mac before an LSU game when I spotted a familiar face in the crowd. Octogenarian Y.A. Tittle was standing there, by himself. I walked up, introduced myself to him and for the next ten minutes had a wonderful conversation from the man who sports writers in San Francisco cautioned not to take his helmet off lest the seagulls bombard his bald head with shellfish, thinking his skull was a rock on which to open such delicacies. Tittle and I discussed that bad Cardinals game, the 49ers in general and his connections to Shreveport, where I lived in the 1970’s and where I met one of his nephews, Jack Tittle (who was not bald at the time). Tittle was coherent, engaging and gracious in all things, even though he was suffering then from the dementia that eventually took him from us. And when I reminded him about the autograph-seeking youngster from so many years before, Mr. Tittle signed my LSU program for me.

In 1957, the 49ers played the Detroit Lions at Kezar Stadium in a one-game showdown for the right to meet the Cleveland Browns for the NFL championship. My father bought two west end zone seats for $6.00 each and we watched the Niners take a 27 to 14 lead behind Tittle’s leadership. But in the 3rd quarter, Tittle broke his leg and in came rookie quarterback John Brodie.

Brodie could not muster another point and the 49er defense, which was average at best, could not stop quarterback Milt Plum and rookie running sensation Jim Brown (Morris Berman/Post-Gazette) from scoring 17 points afterwards to win the game, 31 to 27. In 1980, I had a chance to meet Brodie and that story will have to be told at a future date. When my father and I came home from that bitter loss to Detroit, my mother met us at the door, visibly and verbally upset that she had to stand in line for three hours at a local grocery store to buy $10 tickets to what would have been the championship game in San Francisco. The 49ers loss made her wait useless. Two weeks later, Detroit won its only NFL championship, annihilating Cleveland, 59 to 14. It could have been the Niners. After that game, Tittle and the team were never the same, leading to the trade in 1961 of Tittle to New York for some obscure linebacker. Tittle had four great years in New York but never could win that elusive title. No title for Tittle.

We lost Y.A. two weeks ago. I hope LSU finds a permanent way to honor this man, the only LSU Tiger quarterback in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. My first “YAT”, years before meeting dozens of them in the New Orleans area. Y.A…where ya at? I know you’re in a better place, Mr. Tittle. Thanks for the memories.
