BASEBALL’S DEMISE: NOT SO FAST! Recent articles pertaining to the viability and long-term future of major league baseball have been somewhat negative, given the explosion in high dollar contract deals, the deterioration of starting pitching endurance and the lack of participation by African Americans on all levels of the sport.

However, black collegiate participation slightly increased last year and this year the top collegiate player was a black outfielder from Mercer College. Some of the past speculation about African American participation was unfounded as many Latin players over the years were lumped in with U.S. players because of their skin color. There may never again be an era like the 50’s and 60’s when at least a dozen of the 50 greatest baseball players that plied their trade back then were African Americans. It’s unlikely a grouping like Frank Robinson, Willie McCovey, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Bob Gibson, Don Newcombe, Roy Campanella, Bill White, Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby and Elston Howard will ever surface again. Heck… you won’t see that talent level with Latino or white players as well.

But baseball is and has been the gateway for Latin American and Asian players and today nearly one-third of all major leaguers are from Central and South America or Korea and Japan. And even more encouraging is the number of excellent young players who are Caucasian coming to the majors with gameready skills. This year’s All-Star roster reflects both trends, with few players from even five years ago on either league’s roster. Younger, hipper players mean more younger, hipper fans, which continues the bloodline for this beloved American sport.

Computers and sabermetrics have indelibly changed baseball for good, with most of the attention going to pitching. A 383-strikeout season like Nolan Ryan had will never come again and if a starting pitcher has more than three complete games in a season, he is consider a freak and an Iron Man in the sport.

A growing variety of pitches has overtaxed the bodies of today’s hurlers and constant feedback to hitters by batting coaches and lots of video for hitters to view has made the pitcher’s job even tougher. It’s rare a pitcher wins 20 games in a year and completes more than 200 innings. Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner are the top two pitchers in baseball today and it’s no coincidence they are big, strong and from the old school that says a pitcher stays on the mound until he can’t go any more, not because of some preconceived pitch count like Stephen Strasburg is limited to, which, by the way, has probably cost him two full nine inning no-hitters. Because of this, Strasburg to me will never become the pitcher he could become and doesn’t belong in the discussion with mules like Kershaw and Bumgarner. Bumgarner’s last outing on the Sunday before the All-Star Game might have been his best regular season work ever. He only gave up one hit, walked one batter on a 3 and 1 count, had one baserunner reach on an error and struck out 14 to tie his best K record. He began to wear down in the ninth inning but completed the game with a double play. He and Kershaw are the leaders or in the top five in earned run average and strikeouts.

So, too, has relief pitching hit a new low, with no real shutdown closer on any major league roster this year or for the past several years. Like LSU’s Johnny Wholestaff, many big league managers shuffle five or six non-starters through mound assignments every week and hope that one of them will become the next Mariano Rivera or Dennis Eckersley, born to close out the last few hitters in a game.

Because of this, don’t look for many familiar names on the pitching rosters of all-star teams except for the half-dozen or so like Bumgarner and Kershaw.

Baseball has been reinventing itself, with far fewer sluggers with impressive numbers. It’s rare for a player to hit 40 home runs in a season and drive in more than 100 runs, where in the decades prior to 2000, there were more than a dozen players who did so each year.

Batting averages are increasing but base stealing has declined. Today’s game is a faster, more athletic, better defensive exercise, with the average fielder about 25% more adroit than players from any other era. The Ozzie Smiths and Willie Mays of the world notwithstanding, today’s players make extraordinary fielding gems on a daily basis whereas it was a weekly occurrence back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. The game today is more cerebral for the fan and the player and it takes more knowledge by both to understand the shifts, strategies and statistical mantra that brings success to individuals and teams.

Some things that haven’t changed about baseball: it’s still the best visceral and natural atmosphere for a major sporting event, it offers the least amount of overexcited facility announcers, the least amount of showboating and attitude, the most relaxed venue for the sports fan, the best value for the sports fan (except Yankee Stadium) and the least crowded and safest venue for the average fan. It’s still a sport where you can grab a drink or a hot dog and not really miss anything vitally important and nosebleed seating sections are virtually nonexistent. It’s still the most civilized sporting event among the American Big Three and the one where one win or loss usually does not define a season. It’s a sport where the worst team can defeat the best and doesn’t become a day-long issue of discussion on Sports Center. And no football or basketball movie has the emotional tie between game, father and son that Field of Dreams does. It’s baseball. And it’s cool once again.

Words to GREAUX by Extend Your Tomato Crop

Experienced gardeners know that once daytime temperatures start averaging above 85-90°F spring planted tomatoes start going downhill fast. If diseases like southern blight, early blight, late blight, and bacterial wilt haven’t set in and caused severe leaf drop or plant death, then you have probably noticed flowers dry up and fall off without setting fruit. Blossom drop in tomato is not caused by a pathogen, insect, or nutritional deficiency. Researchers have determined that the actual cause is closely related to day and night Will Afton time temperature. When day time temperatures reach above 85°F and night time temperatures above 72°, flowers will abort and drop off the plant before they have a chance to get fertilized. Older varieties like heirlooms tend to be a lot more sensitive than many hybrid tomato varieties but even hybrids will become susceptible once it gets warm enough. In order to help avoid this phenomenon it is recommended to plant a second crop of “heat set” tomatoes. Heat set, hot set, or heat tolerant tomatoes are bred for their tolerance to high temperatures and perform well in Louisiana. More often than not these varieties show relevance to heat in their names. There are several of these varieties that perform in Louisiana growing conditions. The varieties ‘Sunmaster’, ‘Heat Wave II’, Sun Master’, and ‘Talladaga’ produce smaller 7-8 ounce sized fruit while ‘Solar Set’, ‘Florida 91’, ‘Solar Fire’, and ‘Sun Leaper’ produce larger 9-10 ounce fruit. By planting heat set varieties at the end of the spring season, you can take advantage of the cooler fall temperatures to enjoy tomatoes well into November. Check with your local nursery or home improvement center to see what is available to you.

Crapemyrtle, the Southern Staple While driving through any shopping center, city park, or neighborhood subdivision, there is one common sight seen in all three settings. Crapemyrtle trees are used so often in southern landscapes that if you didn’t see one in someone’s yard, you might think you were in a different part of the country. The common name, crapemyrtle, is derived from its crepe-like flower petals and resemblance to true myrtles. Yes, crapemyrtles are not actually myrtles (Myrtus communis), but rather they belong to the genus Laegerstroemia. These trees are native to Southeastern Asia and are known for their beautiful blooms in the summer time. Over 150 years ago, L. indica was the first crapemyrtle species to make an appearance in the United States. It had a long blooming season but it also was highly susceptible to powdery mildew disease. It wasn’t until the 1950s when a researcher with the US National Arboretum decided to travel to Japan in search of new and interesting plants where L. fauriei was found. This species of crapemyrtle showed some resistance to powdery mildew and also displayed beautiful exfoliating bark. A breeding program was started and several well-known varieties were developed. These indica x fauriei crosses where all given Native American names and some of them should sound familiar to you.

‘Natchez’ is tall upright growing variety reaching heights of 25-30 feet tall and blooms a white flower. ‘Muskogee’ is very similar in appearance but produces light lavender colored blooms.

‘Arapaho’ doesn’t get quite that tall but it has purple/red colored blooms. Reaching heights of 15-20 tall, the ‘Sioux’ variety displays gorgeous pink blooms. Some of the newest releases include varieties that produce dark colored foliage. The Black Diamond series features dark purple foliage with red, pink, and white options. Start looking at crapemyrtles while they are in full bloom this season. Take notes on which ones stand out to you and might look good in your home landscape.
