Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Has First Release of Rehabbed Oiled Birds Found at Belle Chasse Refinery The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) released two birds Thursday evening, the first of dozens being rehabilitated after they were found oiled at a Belle Chasse refinery in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida.

The birds were released at the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge in Franklin as part of LDWF’s ongoing effort to save dozens of birds found coated with oil at the Alliance Refinery days after the August 29 hurricane.

LDWF has documented more than 100 oiled birds with some degree of their bodies stained with oil. At least 34 birds have been captured and are at a rehabilitation facility in New Iberia. The department will be capturing more birds for rehabilitation.

The birds released Thursday were a Purple Gallinule and a King Rail. They are secretive marsh birds. They tend to hide under vegetation upon release.

The oiled birds’ path to rehabilitation began after they were captured by LDWF and examined in the field. Other measures taken included general condition assessment, washing eyes and beak, and clearing obvious obstructions, if necessary.

When LDWF determines the bird is stable, it’s placed in a dark carrier with good ventilation for transport to the designated rehabilitation facility. Once at the facility, the bird is further evaluated by rehabilitation staff, then an individual bird treatment plan is developed.

Treatment is implemented until the bird shows noticeable improvement and exhibits normal behaviors. Upon a final assessment and approval by LDWF, which may include consultation with LDWF State Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. James LaCour, the bird is then scheduled for release.

The number of oiled birds documented within the Alliance Refinery have been observed primarily within heavy pockets of crude oil, as well as nearby flooded fields and retention ponds.

Black-bellied whistling ducks, blue-winged teal and a variety of egret species were among some of the birds identified. Other wildlife observed with some degree of oiling include alligators and river otters.

The release of more rehabilitated birds will be based on their individual recovery status and approved by LDWF. There is no standard number of days for rehabilitation.

LDWF is working in partnership with the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Alliance Refinery is assisting in the recovery as well.

I sincerely hope you all are getting some type of normalcy back in your life. Things have been so crazy these past 3 weeks. I, for one, am tired of this crazy weather. But I must say, I am so thankful for all the linemen and women who are here helping to get the electrical lines back up and getting the lights on to those who still do not have electricity. Please, if you come across some of these guys, let them know how much we appreciate their help. They have left their homes and families to come and help us. And let us keep in prayer the linemen who lost their lives while working here. There were 3 that I know of that lost their lives because some residents didn’t know how to hook up their generator properly. If you have to use a generator, PLEASE turn off the main breaker to your home.

Those men died because those homeowners did not do that and it back fed into the line those men were working on. They lost their lives due to ignorance. If you don’t know what you are doing, ASK someone who does. Another man who was working in New Orleans due to Ida, was killed by a drunk driver. Wow, is all I can say. It breaks my heart to know these men came here to help us and they lost their lives because of ignorance.

Yes, I did work on a project for this column but, my heart just isn’t into showing it or writing about it. There are some very sad families right now who are making funeral arrangements for their loved ones who came to Louisiana to help us. Instead of them having a happy homecoming at the end of their time here, they went home in a coffin. I think we should all Pray for those men and their families.

We should ask God to give us more common sense and to respect human life. To try to make things better instead of worse. When you see one of those men or women working out there, offer them a bottle of cold water, a snack bag, or maybe a lunch. Even a simple Thank You would be nice. Because without them being here fixing those downed power lines, we would have No electricity. How about we think of someone other than ourselves. Yes, we have some totally devastated areas right in our own backyards. Why not reach out to our neighbors and ask what we can do to help them. Many of our nearby neighbors have lost Everything. Some have no homes to live in. Let’s reach out and help them. Just a thought.

I did a bachelor party trip for Paradise plus out of Venice. We had 4 boats and the same guys for 2 days. The first day they had a big fish bet going on. The conditions were horrible to say the least.

We had a hard time even loosing bait. On our first stop we had a few hard head catfish. At the second stop we were on the board with a Good one.

The conditions were extremely difficult. We looked on every point, every drain, and all around every Roseau cane bank we could find.

Keepers were hard to find. Although 2 of the boats had 10 fish we were only able to put 3 in the bod before we were driven in by a nasty thunder storm. It was a bachelor party and the liquid supply was getting dangerously low anyway.

When group of buddies get together for something like this there is a lo of wagering going on. This was no exception. The first day it was biggest redfish and each guy put up $50.00. This stud redfish came in at just under 27 inches and was an astounding 9 pounds 10 ounces. It was worth the $350.00 pool prize. If you can only get a few make it the best!

On the second day the guys went on different boats to switch up a bit. I gave my guys from the first day a hard time saying they jumped ship and did not like to fish with a guy that could not find fish. Trust me this was a great bunch of fun loving stone crushing guys.

It was another stormy morning and I figured from what I saw the day before there was only one place to find fish and clean water. I hit one side of an island and found nothing but catfish. Conditions were as I figured so I moved to the other side and found some good fish.

It is 9:11 in the morning and we are do at the customer’s request. We were told to stop fishing at 10:00 because they all wanted to go to the city for the rest of the party.

Words to GREAUX by LAWNCARE ADVICE FOR FALL Hurricane Ida plowed its way through Southeast Louisiana and Coastal Mississippi last month causing catastrophic damage throughout the region. Tropical Storm Nicholas came through the second week of September and dropped even more rainfall on the region. A lot of folks had to deal with power outages, communication outages, and structural Will Afton damage. As we get our lives back in order let’s not forget about the landscape. As the official start of fall occurs this month its important to discuss the home lawn and a few timely maintenance steps that will help keep it happy.

The fall season is an important time in the life your lawn grass. As the days get shorter and temperatures get cooler, the lawn will start to prepare itself for the oncoming dormant season.

Eventually, growth will slow down before it goes completely dormant. Adjust your routine to help ensure that the lawn stays healthy during this process.

Let’s start with mowing. Keep mowing often enough to remove 1/3 of the grass plant each time.

You also should be using a sharp mowing blade. It’s usually this time of year, late in the summer season, where I start seeing torn grass blades. Sharp blades will cut the grass, but dull blades will tear. You can easily see a general browning in the lawn when dull blades are used. This is due to the torn leaves turning necrotic due to excessive tissue damage.

Be careful with fertilizers. Many companies will advertise “Winterizer” fertilizers this time of year but beware of adding any extra nitrogen after the first of September. Remember that nitrogen makes plants grow and lawns are naturally slowing down and preparing for dormancy.

Fertilizing too late in the year with a high nitrogen fertilizer is counterproductive. However, these winterizer products contains a little extra potassium which helps the plant deal with cold weather. Soils that are deficient in potassium can be amended with a product called muriate of potash (0-0-60). To determine if you need to supplement this nutrient, take and submit a soil sample to the LSU Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Lab. If potassium is deficient, they will provide a recommended rate of product.

Another reason why it’s not recommended to apply nitrogen at the end of the season is because can spread lawn disease. Typical fall weather patterns are optimum for several lawn diseases including large patch (brown patch). In fact, you should be very observant in the fall so that lawn disease problems can be caught early. Large patch starts out as small dead areas that increase in size overnight especially during rainy periods or stretches of humid weather. Apply a fungicide that contain either of these active ingredients: azoxystrobin, propiconazole, myclobutanil. They are all labeled for use on turfgrass areas around the home. Some of the trade names you will see in stores include: BioAdvanced Fungus Control, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II, Fertilome F-Stop, Green Light Fung-Away and Scott’s DiseaseX. Make sure to treat the entire yard to control the disease and prevent other areas from becoming infected.

Lastly, think about weed control. Soon there will be a whole new crop of cool season weeds that grow during the fall and winter months. Prevent cool season annual weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide now. A popular favorite is Dimension (dithiopyr). It can be found at local feed stores and garden centers under the name Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper II. For existing weeds that are already growing in the lawn you can use Weed Free Zone and atrazine to manage. Atrazine will provide not only post emergent control, but it also has some pre-emergent properties. Remember to read and follow label instructions before applying a pesticide.

Louisiana SPCA Hopes to Reunite Lost Pets with Families after Hurricane Ida Pet owners have 3 days to reclaim pets before they become adoptable NEW ORLEANS – In the days following Hurricane Ida, the Louisiana SPCA has taken in more than 180 animals. While the normal stray-hold period in Orleans Parish is three days from the date of intake, the Louisiana SPCA has delayed the start of the stray-hold period to being September 8.

Once a stray animal has been held for the three-day stray-hold window the Louisiana SPCA becomes the legal owner and can determine the best placement option for that animal, including adoption. All animals taken in since Hurricane Ida can be viewed at www. louisianaspca.org/strays.

If you see your pet on the Louisiana SPCA’s website, here’s what you should do.

Immediately fill out a lost report at www.louisianaspca.org/lost. If you are unable to fill out the report yourself, call 504.368.5191 for assistance.

Once the report is received, someone from the Louisiana SPCA will contact you within 24-hours to set an appointment to reclaim your pet.

As the state assesses the damage for Hurricane Ida, many of our residents might be searching for temporary foster care for their pets until they are able to get back on their feet.

911FosterPets is a resource for families dealing with the aftermath of the storm, linking their pets with temporary foster homes. Doing so prevents these pets from having to enter a shelter and prevents pet owners from having to permanently give up a pet. If you are willing to foster a pet temporarily whose owner may have been displaced or you are looking for temporary foster care for your pet, please sign up through the 911fosterpets.com. The Louisiana SPCA is not able to board owned pets.
