The seemingly annual disasters of nature and national politics revisited our country since our last publication in late August. First and foremost was the cowardly, political and clueless abandonment of our position in Afghanistan, leaving thousands of our citizens and foreign allies in at the least a precarious position. The Taliban forces we now know have a hell of a lot more resolve than anyone in Washington can even think about. There has been precious little leadership on the Afghan situation for most of the 20 years since 9-11 but our politicians and even some of our military leaders have executed an action that will cost this country dearly for the immediate future. It’s amazing that any so-called leader would vacillate as much as Sleepy Joe Biden has done but the lineup following him is just as bad or worse, depending on whether you rate total incompetence or a bitchy power queen as our next Commander-in-Chief.

We won’t be out of the woods on this one until, at the earliest, the midterm national elections next year, which should resoundingly place at least one chamber and perhaps both in the hands of a barely competent but at least patriotic and America First collection of Washington freeloaders. That, of course, would be the Republican Party, the party against CRT and for secure borders, two issues vital to our country’s quest to stabilize itself. Without some old-fashioned civics lessons and sense of right and wrong, this country will remain at the mercy of a dementia-riddled septuagenarian, a Communistic eighty-something and another septuagenarian who left her home in Maryland years ago to move to California and get her hair done while others weren’t allowed to do so.

The second disaster, of course, was Ida, whose impact rivals Katrina in some critical areas but generally allowed a much larger population to rebound much sooner than 2005. However, try telling that to the folks in the River Parishes, Acadiana, Barataria, Plaquemines and portions of western New Jersey and the Manhattan area where this bitch of a storm killed more people 2,500 miles away from her landfall than she did in Louisiana. What a terrible way to introduce Yankees to Southern killer weather. The good part is that now some of the North realizes what we go through on a regular basis here and their attitudes about our part of the country should begin to change as they realize what fury Mother Nature can bestow. Blizzards are bad and so are blue Northers but at least most of the time the population can prepare and hunker down without having to evacuate and suffer the widespread horrors of what a hurricane or tornado can bring.

Speaking of tornados, western New Jersey was victimized by a fairly powerful F-3 off of Ida’s flank. Twisters are rarer than an urban conservative north of the Mason-Dixon line but the Garden State was planted incredibly hard last week. These storms, whether fodder for climate change advocates or the natural state of an eon cycle, have become front and center the subject of doing something about them. Mother Nature can be compromised from time to time and we really don’t need to build any more concrete jungles surrounding our urban centers. Take away Nature’s natural sentinels against man’s stupidity and man’s stupidity will win out. We can grow without greed and need to do so whether you recycle or not. And until our leadership is willing to reduce their own carbon footprint by reducing or eliminating their airplanes, gas guzzlers and yachts for more pedestrian methods, they can go pound sand.

The third disaster is much more local and less impactful except for one nation…..the Tiger Nation. It looks like Coach Ed Orgeron has begun to pick up some of the coaching acumen of one Lester Miles, recently retired under duress. Coach O’s Tell The Truth Tuesday should begin with why this team can’t create on-field leadership and why an offensive line whose unit was the best in college football two years ago looked like Dick and Jane with Dick sitting on the sideline. UCLA is the Baby Blue Boys of Westwood, concerned more about brie, baseball and basketball than football. Yet LSU found a way to make a senior-laden group of overachievers look like the Taliban in Kabul on Saturday. Even Nick Saban got embarrassed by a puny team or two on his way to becoming the GOAT of all coaches in any sport in any nation at any level. But the Coonass Collapse of the Tigers needs to be addressed NOW. Coach O jettisoned his old coaches for a bunch of 30-somethings and it just didn’t work. Don’t give me the old crap about the evacuation or Dare Rosenthal transferring or Myles Brennan being injured; a quarterback whose knee was so damaged three years ago that doctors said he probably would not even walk without pain let alone be an active athlete nearly led Florida State to an upset win over Notre Dame Sunday night.

Tiger fans just need to look to Tuscaloosa for inspiration, where changes, injury and some controversy is more than overcome every season by the Alabama/Saban mantra of college football excellence. Talent does win out but leadership, instruction and the basics, along with mental conditioning and resolve get things done. Simply put, LSU football on Saturday reminded me of watching Joe Biden and his “team” in action last week in the Middle East. Ed, your midterm election might be coming up a lot sooner than you think if 2021 continues to start out like 2020.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Warns Public of Potential Fish Kills due to Hurricane Ida The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) says it will investigate each one of the substantial fish kills it predicts throughout southeast Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Hurricane-related fish kills are generally caused by low dissolved oxygen (DO), and can occur from landfall of the storm until weeks after the event. The main factors contributing to hurricane-related fish kills include storm surge, the churning up of oxygen-poor water and sediment due to wind and rain, and the sudden input of large amounts of organic debris into waterways.

Following the event, organic matter will begin to decompose, and microbes will deplete the DO from the water causing fish to “suffocate.” These factors can work alone or in conjunction to cause fish kills following a hurricane.

Storm-related fish kills have occurred in Louisiana since before recorded history, and the ecosystems have evolved to be resilient and bounce back from them. Decomposers and scavengers including microbes, crawfish, crabs, fish, alligators, turtles, raccoons, and birds will do their part helping to clean up fish carcasses.

Many fish and aquatic organisms will find refuge from the low DO waters, and participate in the boom year of reproduction that will surely follow since there will be fewer predators and more resources available by next spring.

While fish kills are shocking to experience and can appear devastating, they often lead to a rejuvenated system that is healthy and naturally replenished in the following years.

HAS THE JOE BIDEN ERA ARRIVED AT LSU?

When your prominent alumni start wailing on your program hours after a defeat, it’s time to revisit the current season of The Ed Orgeron Show. Okay. 2019. Led by a rejected Mississippi and Nebraskainfluenced quarterback and a truckload of talent, LSU put on one of the finest college football shows of all time. 15 and 0. Beat the only other team to go 15 and 0 in a second half beatdown in the Superdome to win their third national championship. Had six first round NFL selections and a record 20 players either drafted or free-agency into the league.

2020. Led by one-time defensive wunderkind Bo Pelini, the Tigers showed that Bo had no concept of modern spread offenses as an average Mississippi State team passed for an NCAA record 600+ yards in Tiger Stadium. The Tigers didn’t win anything worth mentioning until Myles Brennan’s injury and another (freshman) quarterback’s incompetence led fellow freshman Max Johnson to secure an implausible win over Florida and a quality victory over Ole Miss to give Tiger fans for 2021 hope for a partial repeat of 2019.

Now reality sets in. The program that former Tiger All American Marcus Spears labeled mediocre less than five years ago is only a step or two away from the same designation under Orgeron. Passion, preparation and daily bromides work well with self-motivated players with leadership qualities such as Devin White but without such players, a year of Covid-19 and a lack of quality running backs and “bring it” offensive linemen, this Tiger team is repeating a mantra all too familiar to LSU fandom.

If we have to be “ready” for Mississippi State in three weeks to judge this program, a Bulldog team that barely beat Louisiana Tech at home, then we really have little reason to waste our time and treasure trekking to Baton Rouge, where subpar concessions and nonexistent constructive fan feedback outlets continue to keep the program, viewing wise, in the 1980’s, There’s a lot of staleness in Tigertown and a boatload of controversy still hanging over this program. LSU needs a super public relations team as much as it needs a complete overhaul in the way it does business. All the pretty stadium trappings, courtesy of TAF, cannot overcome the growing stench of what may lie under the surface of the Ole War Skule. Like Joe Biden and Afghanistan, LSU has its own botched withdrawal - this one from the failure but with the undeniable ability to produce a program eerily similar to Alabama’s. But politics and ancient practices will keep LSU on a yo-yo of inconsistency as ticket prices rise, expectations fall and the Alzheimers of diminishing skill sets in deeper and deeper. Coach O’s mama wears a pair of socks with her son’s likeness stitched on. Maybe Coach O could go into the garment business. One more week like last week and he might have to revise his resume’ and work on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Hope you are all doing well and picking up the pieces from the devastation of Hurricane Ida. My prayers go out to everyone that has been affected. I feel blessed as we only had minor damage and have been without electricity since the storm hit. Yes, it is hot, so many of us have been dealing with the sweltering heat. We are not alone in that aspect. The crews of lineman who have come to our area are dealing with the same thing. They work in the same hot temperatures that we are living through. They are away from their families, here to help us in our time of need. So instead of complaining about not having electricity, why not tell them thank you when you are driving by the men/women working to restore our power, give them a cold bottle of water or Gatorade, hand them a snack bag, or join one of the many groups of residents that are cooking to help feed those linemen/women. Let them know we appreciate what they are doing for us.

Now for this time’s project. This is a piece I have been trying to work on. It is not finished. I still have more shading and highlighting to do on it. I am going to add either a wooden button or a small flower to the hat. I am so thinking Fall and cooler temperatures. Living in a house with inside temperatures of 90 degrees is not easy, even with a generator that is running the ceiling fan and a box fan.This design is painted on a grooved board. This is something that can be hung on your front alone or inside a wreath. I will be working on other Fall pieces (hopefully) soon. Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next project be? I got a late call for 3 guys that were going offshore but one of their motors blew forcing the trip to be canceled. I stopped what I was doing and took them out. They wanted bulls. We got there late but found some action. One guy had the presentation down and hooked up quickly.

He landed 3 of them while the other 2 watched and just kept getting sail cats.

Eventually one of them hooked up. As he was fighting his fish other ones were following the one on the hook looking for a scrap to be dropped so they could get in on the action. This enabled us to cast another bait near the one hooked and instantly get a double.

As the bite slowed we made a choice to go in looking for a few slots. It was tough but we did manage a few of them while going through a ton of lady fish.

During the quest for slots we found a large, over 5 feet, black tip shark that gave the customer a battle he never expected. After many trips around the boat I was able to get close enough to cut the line and only loose the hook. Soon after that we hook up to another hard fighter.

Thankfully it turned out to only be a big black drum. After a picture it went back.

After fighting bulls earlier and now looking for slots we were surprised to find this trophy 43 inch bull red in the shallows. Our biggest one when we were targeting them was only 38 inches.

This was a good way to end our day. It was time for dinner.

Words to GREAUX by DEAD BRANCHES IN SHADE TREES It is quite common to notice a dead branch in the canopy’s of landscape trees during the late summer months. The second half of a long growing season takes its toll on many of our landscape plants, especially trees.

Because of their large size, trees are considered the “tough guys” in the Will Afton landscape, but they too can struggle with environmental stresses. There is no one single explanation for a dead branch in the canopy of a tree.

Let’s look at a few causes to understand why our landscape trees might develop a dead branch and how to manage it.

The Black Twig Borer (Xylosandrus spp.) is a small beetle with an affinity for your shade trees.

These beetles are so small that they typically go unnoticed until they cause a section of tree branch to turn brown. If you can follow the branch down to where green foliage is present, you will notice hole smaller than 1mm. This is the entry hole for a female Black Twig Borer. Once inside the stem she burrows out a cavity and lays eggs. The young beetles use the hollowed out cavity until they emerge as adults where this process can be repeated. The best way to manage this problem is to apply good tree care practices that encourage tree health and vigor.

Remove dead branches by pruning 3 to 4 inches below the beetle entrance hole. Insecticides may help but they need to be applied early in the year before beetles enter the tree. Permethrin and bifenthrin are labeled for such use on landscape plants. Be sure to read and follow label instructions before applying any pesticide.

Lightning strikes can cause dead branches in trees if they don’t bring the tree down entirely.

Each lightning strike produces an electrical charge of 100 million volts and can reach temperatures greater than 50,000°F. When only a small section of a tree’s canopy is damaged from lightning, there is a good chance that the tree will be able to recover. Provide irrigation water and fertilizer to help reduce stress. Corrective pruning should be done to remove damaged wood and to help accelerate recovery. Consult with a certified arborist when it comes to doing work on landscape trees. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry can help with finding a certified arborist.

Wildlife, particularly squirrels, can create problems in landscape trees. When food is scarce squirrels will feed on tree roots, twigs, buds, and inner bark of small limbs. The resulting damage appears as dead branches in the canopy. Open wounds in trees can be entryways for pathogens and lead to more compounding problems later on. Managing squirrels and other wildlife can be tricky. There are several methods available including trapping, use of repellants, birds of prey decoys, and the use of physical barriers like aluminum flashing wrapped around the base of a tree. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) publishes a nuisance wildlife control operator list that can be accessed on their website. It provides a listing of individuals who are licensed by LDWF to control nuisance wildlife. The website can be found at www.wlf. louisiana.gov.

Root zone stress is one of the more popular ways to cause issues in tree limbs and branches.

Its common in new construction but it can affect any landscape tree. Changes in surface drainage and root zone compaction along with physical and mechanical damage by humans are some of the leading ways to cause stress on mature landscape trees. When tree roots become unproductive, the flow of water from the root system to the canopy becomes disrupted.

Portions of the canopy will stop receiving water. Typically, symptoms of root zone stressed trees include leaf dieback at the tips of branches (furthest point from the root system), delayed leaf emergence, whole branch failure, and eventual tree decline. Older trees that have accumulated stress over a longer period do not recover overnight. It is a gradual response to beneficial soil conditions that help these trees recover. Start by not digging in the root zone of a tree and refrain from cutting roots within 10-15 feet of the tree in question. Prune out dead limbs when possible. Passively alleviate soil compaction by providing a layer of organic mulch over the root zone. The organic layer of the forest floor provides habitat for many organisms that live their life in the soil. They help to aerate the soil by digging, burrowing, and feeding. You can create a forest floor for your shade trees by using mulch. Cover the soil with 3-4 inches of any organic mulch product. Fallen leaves from the tree in question make an excellent resource for this purpose. Pull the mulch back 6 inches from the trunk of the tree to allow for air flow at the crown level. These suggestions won’t turn things around overnight, but they will help to reduce stress over time which benefits long-lived plants like trees in our landscapes.

Louisiana SPCA urges pet owners to prepare for impending hurricane

NEW ORLEANS – With the imminent threat of a hurricane this weekend, the Louisiana SPCA urges pet owners to prepare now!

Just like other members of your household, emergency planning for your pets requires supplies and advance preparation. The supplies you gather should be able to provide for your pet for at least five days.

Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date and make copies of your records. In the event of an evacuation, all boarding facilities and veterinarian offices that do accept pets require proof of immunization before accepting pets. Be sure to call first to inquire if a boarding or vet clinic does provide boarding during an evacuation.

Update your pet’s ID tags if needed.

Compile a list of places you can go if you need to evacuate. Consider staying with family or friends outside of the strike zone. Look into pet-friendly hotels, shelters or boarding facilities.

Please know the Louisiana SPCA does not operate as a boarding facility for owned pets.

Hurricane Checklist for Pets Food and water. Keep food in an airtight, waterproof container. Water for pets should be in addition to the water you need for yourself and family.

Medicine and medical records. Keep an extra supply of medicine your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container. All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices require proof of immunization before accepting animals.

Collar with ID tag; harness or leash. Your pet should wear a collar with its rabies tag and identification at all times.

Documents. Place copies of your pet’s microchip information, registration, adoption papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a clear plastic bag or waterproof container.

Crate or other pet carrier. Carriers should be large enough for your pet to stand up, completely turn around, and lie down. Mark your name, address, phone number and an alternate contact on the carrier.

Sanitation. Include pet litter, newspapers, towels, plastic trash bags and cleaners in your evacuation bag so you can pick up after your pet.

Three terrific tabby girls are looking for homes. Rescued from a variety of situations in which cats tend to not survive for long, they were fostered in the homes of START volunteers until they were ready for adoption. All three have been spayed, tested and vaccinated. Roxy gets along well with dogs, Jamie is a cuddler, and Autumn likes to play. Roxy, Jamie and Autumn are just a few of our cats and kittens available for adoption.
