TIGERS FACE UCLA BRUINS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

The LSU Tigers will face the UCLA Bruins September 4th in a pair of first for LSU. The first is the venue; LSU has never played in the Rose Bowl, Pasadena’s beautiful stadium setting away from most of the foulness that now permeates the Los Angeles area 20 miles to the west and south. It’s also the first time that the Purple and Gold have faced the Powder Blue of UCLA, a color that USC folk like to refer to as “Baby Blue”. So it has been for most of the storied rivalry between these two Los Angeles powerhouses.

USC has taken the majority of the games and has dominated the All Americans coming out of Southern California schools. LSU simply should have no problems with UCLA; they are not a particularly good team on either side of the ball and in recent years few of their skill position players or defensive units have generated much talk in college football.

In fact, the only reason I’m doing this column is to talk about my best game in the Rose Bowl. In 1962, USC had its fourth undefeated season but the first in which they were considered a candidate for the national championship crown. They were led by the “B” Boys: Pete Beathard at quarterback, Hal Bledsoe at receiver, Willie Brown at running back and defensive stalwart Damone Bane. None of my former high school teammates were eligible to play; they were all freshmen who weren’t eligible in those days to play for the varsity. However, my sister was dating a USC defensive end by the name of Mike Gale. Mike was second string; a good but not great player. He would come by my house when he called on my sister and we would talk football. I also played defensive end and played tight end on offense as a high school senior that year. Mike was looking forward to the game but an injury late in the season meant he wouldn’t be able to suit up for the game, a match between USC and Wisconsin scheduled for January 1st in the Rose Bowl.

After Mike found out, a local Los Angeles Times sports reporter by the name of Jim Murray wrote a column about Mike and why it was a shame he would miss the game. After sharing the story with Mike, he asked me if I was going to the game. In those days, it was virtually impossible to get a seat for the Rose Bowl if you were an ordinary resident. When I told him I wasn’t, he reached into his wallet and pulled out a ticket in the northeast upper bowl and said “now you have a ticket. Enjoy the game.” Since most players only received two or four tickets to the game for family and friends, I was overjoyed to get the prized ducat.

Now the Rose Bowl is only the conclusion of a phenomenal night and morning prior to the game. I took a date to Pasadena, triple dating with two other couples in two cars. We hung out on Colorado Boulevard for the New Years Eve celebration, then slept and partied on the sidewalk and the street until dawn as hundreds of hot rods from all over Southern California raced by our space, coming within a foot or so of where we lay. The morning of course was the main event; beginning shortly after dawn, hundreds or thousands of vehicles sashayed down the east-west thoroughfare for two to three hours before traffic was halted for the finest non-Mardi Gras parade in our country - The Tournament of Roses extravaganza that would continue unabated for three hours down the hill from South Pasadena’s San Gabriel Mountains with a rising sun in the background. Once the parade ended, I had my friends take my date back home to Los Angeles and proceeded the mile and a half towards the stadium, where I had parked my car on the unrestricted grass the night before.

The rest of the day was magic. USC won its first national championship by defeating Wisconsin, 42 to 37, in what is considered one of the three best Rose Bowl games ever. I was tired but happy, being a USC fan in those days, and happy for Mike and my sister. I drove home, thinking that attending a college football game couldn’t get any better. Then came LSU two years later and the LSU/ Clemson national championship in the Superdome just two years ago. My seat was much better for LSU/Clemson (43 yard line, 3rd row press box) but the thrill was similar to that January 1st perfectly sunny afternoon - my first Rose Bowl to attend and a harbinger of great college football games to come in Baton Rouge, Gainesville, Oxford, Lexington, Auburn, Knoxville, Tuscaloosa……….

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Louisiana National Estuarine Research Reserve Site Development Committee Seeks Public Input The National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) System is a nationwide network of 29 coastal sites designed to protect and study estuarine systems. There are none in Louisiana, however, the Louisiana NERR (LaNERR) Site Development Committee is working to change that.

LaNERR, through Louisiana Sea Grant, is in the site development phase of the process of selecting to nominate a Louisiana estuary to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and is seeking the public’s input. Three alternative sites have been proposed, including Atchafalaya Basin, Barataria Basin and Pontchartrain Basin.

The LaNERR Site Development Committee will host a series of virtual town hall meetings to provide information on the sites as well as take public input. Since the meetings will be virtual attendance only, registration is required. To register for any of the town hall meetings, go to LaNERR: Town Hall Meetings | Louisiana Sea Grant (laseagrant.org).

The National Estuarine Research Reserve System is a network of estuarine areas representative of the various biogeographic regions in the United States. Reserves are established for long-term research, education, stewardship and interpretation to promote informed management of the nation’s estuaries and coastal habitats. NOAA provides funding and national guidance and each site is managed on a daily basis by a lead state agency or university with input from local partners.

The research reserves cover over 1.3 million acres of estuaries and are focused on the following: • Each site undertakes the initiatives needed to keep the estuary healthy.

• Reserve-based research and monitoring data are used to aid conservation and management efforts on local and national levels.

• Local and state officials are better equipped to introduce local data into the decision-making process as a result of reserve training efforts.

But, Fall and Winter will be here soon and I know we will probably be complaining about the freezing temperatures. Wouldn’t it be nice if it would stay Fall or Spring all the time? I guess we would find something to complain about. Human nature I guess.

Well, let me tell you a little something about my RAK. Remember last time I told you I would be painting up something small and leaving them in different places? Well, that is what I have been doing. This is an example of one of the designs. I thought with all the flowers blooming,bees buzzing and hot summer days, this would be a nice reminder when the days turn bitterly cold. This is only one design I have been placing around. There are sunflowers, snails, dragon flies, and butterflies. They are all painted on 3” wooden disks. There is a verse or message on the back of each one. Just something to brighten your day. I hope you are the lucky person to find one of my RAK. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did painting it. Oh, by the way, you can drill a little hole in the top of it to put a ribbon thru to hang it, or place a magnet on the back to place it on the fridge. Or you can share it with a friend.

COVID-19? I’M MORE CONCERNED ABOUT CONFLICT ’19

As millions of Americans argue and battle over whether to get vaccine shots or the merits of teaching Critical Race Theory in our schools, America is facing the biggest crisis of all time. No, it’s not the Asian version of the Spanish Flu from 103 years ago; its the very fabric of our society not rending apart. It’s been going on consistently since 2019, when the most contentious political issues of our time dictated how activities in nearly every aspect of our lives would be conducted.

Whether you hate Donald Trump or Joe Biden, Americans are more and more choosing sides on which flawed direction this country will take in the next decade. I say flawed because the bile and intolerance is more than the average American should have to put up with during a typical week. Instead, multimillion dollar anchors and columnists from all walks of life are filling the airwaves and social media sources using reasoning that a good debate club would skewer in the first five minutes of what used to be a debate. Now the two sides take their best political lineup and insert them into mass media like today’s baseball managers handle a pitching staff. Nothing new has been said for months as the mediocre lineups continue to ignore, postulate, grandstand and faux analyze the affairs of the state on an hourly if not minute-by-minute basis.

It’s the nadir of our political lifetime when our alleged leaders cannot bring themselves to reach accord over such basic issues as protecting the lives of our citizens, keeping order on our borders or spending with any sense of accountability. There really isn’t much difference between the Democrats and Republicans in Washington; both parties have it more than good, insulated behind the walls of tenure, connection and greed. These things have always been a factor in the way our government gets things done but the blatant inclusion of biased media, gutless corporate leadership and the laziness of a population that more and more would rather text than toil has put this great country at serious risk for its future as a beacon of hope and a leader of the world where the great majority of men and women have a fair shake to succeed and live peacefully.

If you live in a major population base metro today, you have little reason to open your mouth without preparing for some type of conflict. But whatever that conflict may be, it should be allowed to be aired in an open marketplace of ideas and theories. In the ’60s, college campuses had Free Speech Alleys, where virtually any subject could be broached and argued without fear of retribution or scorn. Today, speech is being suppressed as our cancel culture rides roughshod over the spineless, the clueless and the undereducated citizens, who have little idea of what civics, American history or economic theory means in maintaining a civilized society. More ideas were bandied about and more minds were changed in my lifetime than in any similar period of American life. Like in any society, not everything can be perfect and those ideas that were traditional should be revisited and tweaked as society changes. But the core values of a country must be maintained and those who believe in those core values must be allowed to write and vocalize them under any conditions. Anything less is seditious and unless those rebelling against the core values have a set of conditions acceptable to the consciouses of Americans and their right to cast their ballot for or against them, the result is anarchy and destruction.

This is not a country that should accept self-loathing as a keystone. Whether you are Caucasian, Black, Latino, Asian or one of dozens of other groups of citizens, the term “citizen” should become the benchmark for your lives. We shouldn’t be living our existence dictated by election patterns. We should use our lives in productive, peaceful and inclusive pursuits, rejecting the politics of divisiveness and name-calling and doing what is best for our neighbors. This viewpoint, though Pollyanna-ish in reality, is still what the vast majority of people care for and thirst for in these 50 states. We are a nation of dreaming doers, caring for our friends, neighbors and strangers, offering a chance for the afflicted and disenfranchised to come and achieve the American Dream. It is not to be handed out like Halloween candy but earned with the mutual respect of our way of life, understanding our way of governing and subscribing to an oath to become an active part of that number who would belly up to the table of American opportunity willingly and actively to make their peace and their mark in a society more free from oppression, caste and restriction than any other nation in our planet’s history. That’s the way we roll and we desperately need to get back to that roll in the very near future.

The lack of wind and constant action made for an early request to get back to the air-conditioning that the marina had to offer. They were worried about dad being 80 and starting to feel the effects of the heat. At 10:30 we were heading in with a very happy crew.

As the dawn broke we headed out for some hot bull redfish action. The forecast was for a heat index of over 100 degrees.

I had 3 generations on board. There was hardly a breeze but the fish were busy making waves of their own. The son was the first to hook up and enjoy a great open water battle.

He found the rhythm quickly. This was a real treat for him. I kept switching baits until I found the best baits they wanted today.

Dad was next to get into the action. He wanted to have a good family picture with this hog. Our day was going well.

While grandpa was fighting the sail cats the Dynamic duo of father and son was putting on a clinic. We had an action filled double.

The action continued at a very good pace. Land one, get a picture, and get ready to net another one. I was loving every bit of this.

After a long time one of the redfish made the mistake of inhaling grandpa’s bait. Even with a very slow presentation one of the fish made a deadly attack on the bait. The fish was a good one and grandpa was a bit tired after the massive battle he just went through so his son held it for him for the picture.

Words to GREAUX by PINK MUHLY GRASS SHINES AMONGST OTHER ORNAMENTAL GRASSES Ornamental grasses are a division of perennial landscape plants commonly overlooked by the casual gardener. They add a wonderful contrast of texture in the landscape when used near plants with large, coarse leaves. The leaves move easily with the breeze, creating motion in the landscape. The sheer diversity in color, size, and shape provides the industry with many exciting selections. One of the best attributes regarding the use of ornamental grasses in the home landscape is their Will Afton care and maintenance requirements. Relatively pest free, there isn’t much that will attack our ornamental pest plants and with their fibrous roots, they develop extensive root systems that can support the plant during times of environmental stress. All of these added together make for quite an impressive plant!

One of these ornamental grass plants that can be seen all over St. Tammany parish and throughout South Louisiana is pink muhly grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris. Sometimes referred to as gulf muhly, pink muhly grass is native to North America with a region of origin from the United States of America down to Guatemala and the Caribbean. Within the U.S., it occurs in prairies, pine barrens, and open woodlands from Massachusetts to Kansas and then down to Texas and Florida. The genus is named after Gotthilf Muhlenberg, an American botanist from Pennsylvania. The species name, capillaris, is of Latin origin and is defined as “of or resembling hair”, which is vindicated after seeing the plant for the first time.

Being a member of Poaceae, the main grass plant family in plant taxonomy, pink muhly grass shares many of the same characteristics of other grasses. It is considered a warm-season grass, like our common lawn grasses, due to its growth output during the summer months. Being perennial, it lives year after year going through dormant periods during the winter months. The real gossip begins with its attractive foliage and smoke-like flowers during late summer and fall months. The leaves are dark green in color, glossy, wiry, and thread-like. The panicles, loose multi-branched flowers, are pink in color and develop in late summer through the fall. They make for great individual specimens, but they really shine when used in a mass planting off in the distance. The plants themselves can get up to 4 ft tall with a width of about 3 ft.

There are a few cultural recommendations to follow to have a successful planting of pink muhly grass in the landscape. Like other grasses, pink muhly grass is going to require a decent amount of light for the plant to thrive. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight throughout the day. The area should have decent drainage. Pink muhly grass can tolerate a moist soil. However, if water collects regularly after rain events, I might reconsider. Lastly, take soil samples to determine soil fertility and adjust in situations where plant nutrients are showing “very low” and “low” levels. Comply with these conditions and pink muhly grass will thrive in your landscape.

Whether in the ground or in a mixed container with other plants, pink muhly grass is an excellent choice for Louisiana gardeners. It’s such a good choice that the LSU AgCenter has selected pink muhly grass to be a finalist in the Louisiana Super Plant Program. Look for marketing campaigns that feature pink muhly grass later this fall. The Louisiana Super Plant Program highlights exceptional plants that perform well throughout our beautiful state.

One of the country’s largest adoption events is NBC Universal’s Clear the Shelters. Every year, thousands of rescue animals nationwide are able to find their forever homes during this special event. This year, the Louisiana SPCA will once again be participating from August 31 – September 18!

Three terrific tabby girls are looking for homes. Rescued from a variety of situations in which cats tend to not survive for long, they were fostered in the homes of START volunteers until they were ready for adoption. All three have been spayed, tested and vaccinated. Roxy gets along well with dogs, Jamie is a cuddler, and Autumn likes to play.
