Happy School Year PR!!! Can you believe summer is ending and the students are back in school? It is so hard to believe. The time sure does fly. As always PRPD would like to remind everyone of the school zones, one-way only streets during school hours and hands-free cell phone law while in the school zones.

As of now masks are required in schools, buses, and support sites for all students in grades K-12 and all adults. This is in conjunction with the mask mandate made by our Governor that may expire as early as September 1, 2021. Parents, as your children head back to school you may want to take another glance at the STPSB rules and regulations that have been updated on their website.

Just to list a few: 1. All cell phones now must be “out of sight”. The students are not allowed to carry them in their front or back pockets. As always, they are still to remained turned off at school.

2. They are now permitting students to wear a stud earring in their nose but only a stud.

3. Boys are to adhere to the same rules as the girls now in regards to the length of their shorts. No more “short-shorts” will be permitted. All shorts are now to be 5 in. above their knees.

They recently made a post on Facebook stating they are working very hard to run their business with a skeleton crew and may not be able to work on equipment the is brought to them as fast as they would like to for now. LDWF biologists have monitored hydrological parameters and conducted trawl samples throughout the state’s estuarine and nearshore waters to develop recommendations for the opening of the fall shrimp season. These results were used to calculate a date when white shrimp will reach marketable size.

The Commission granted authority to the Secretary of the Department to delay or advance these opening dates and to close any portion of Louisiana inside waters to protect small, juvenile white shrimp if biological and technical data indicate the need to do so, or if enforcement problems develop. The Commission also granted authority to the Secretary to close shrimping in all or portions of state outside waters if significant numbers of small, sublegal size white shrimp are found in biological samples, and authority to reopen any area closed to shrimping when the closure is no longer necessary. Notice of any opening, delay or closing of a season by the Secretary will be made public at least 72 hours prior to such action.

Pearl River-Honey Island Shooting Range to be Closed Temporarily for Renovation Work Beginning Aug. 11 The Pearl River-Honey Island Shooting Range located on the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) will be closed beginning Aug. 11 for renovation work and infrastructure improvements, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced.

The work is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 10. The renovation work is part of a statewide LDWF shooting range improvement initiative. This construction will result in enhanced user and range safety features.

SCHOOL IS BACK IN! Tony’s Take “Fishing Edition” I PAID THE RENT BUT THE APARTMENT WAS NEARLY EMPTY I felt like singer George Thorogood last week on the waters of lower Plaquemines Parish. No, the fishing didn’t make me feel like I was Bad to the Bone; the fish that took Hoop’s and my live shrimp were rat reds, junk ladyfish and the ever-present catfish. We went through the bait well rather quickly on a morning that was ominously dark to the southwest as the omnipresent thunderstorms were keeping most sane fishermen inside the jetties and the tuna and snapper anglers close to the relative shallows and safety of the marinas around Venice.

I felt more like One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer with no refills, no doubles and no chasers. In fact, the only keepable catch was made by yours truly as I landed a cookable red, a textbook culinary speck and a very tasty sheepsphead. Hoop was frustrated as was I but those days happen less often than not and it was our turn to feed the shrimp to the masses of fishes in the protected waters outside Delta Marina.

I’d like to say there was more to this story but there isn’t. The continued erosion of Louisiana’s vast fishing coastline continues to show its ugly side, with islands, landmarks and channels changing, disappearing or silting over and if you don’t know the waters outside of the oyster beds you are literally gambling by running full throttle in the marshlands.

The morning started with a pod of dolphins within 30 feet of our rig and the day progressed with wind but no rain. It was supposed to lay down that weekend but Mother Nature has been a miserable Momma this year and she played havoc with our backsides as we bounced from one sterile tie-up to another. Most other boats were shut out or didn’t even break out the gear as the super-serious anglers apparently decided to stay home or take another route to another fishing area. But, fishing and being shut out is still better than not fishing at all and there are few places in the world that you are virtually assured of watching your fishing rod bow down under the pressure of a keeper bull red, five pound speck or a black drum, sheepshead or platter-sized flounder. Life is more than bearable on the water, even in this heat and rain forest summer and for those limited seasons left to me, they are all welcome respite, spending time with a man who would rather fish than almost anything else.

Words to GREAUX by PREPARE ROSES FOR A “SECOND SPRING” Roses have a deep history with gardening culture. Wikipedia and other internet resources will tell you that rose gardening has been going on for hundreds of years! You can really appreciate the long association with gardening after looking into all of the different hybrids that have come out of breeding programs over the past decades. Some of the flower forms and color combinations available are truly remarkable.

From the long stemmed hybrid tea roses to the multi-branched floribunda roses, several rose types appeal to a multitude of landscape Will Afton situations. Groundcover roses offer low growing and spreading type growth habits to help cover large areas of bed. Climbing roses offer artistic appeal as they grow upon wooden fences and cast iron trellises, and garden arbors. Shrub roses provide easy maintenance and prolific flowering.

Roses take a beating in the Gulf south. The hot humid climate during the summer months puts a lot of stress on the plants. Blackspot disease can almost completely defoliate a rose bush.

Several species of beetle, flower thrips, leafhoppers, and spidermites can wreak havoc on a stressed plant. Rejuvenate tired, stressed out roses by pruning and fertilizing in August. The removal of damaged foliage through pruning will encourage the plant to produce new leaves.

As temperatures start to cool down later in September, the plant will produce a second round of blooms. It won’t be as plentiful as in spring, but just as delightful.

Follow these easy steps to prepare your rose bushes for the fall.

1. Using a pair of sharp hand pruners, remove any broken or damaged branches from the bush.

2. On the second pass, look for and remove any branches that rub or cross.

3. You may lightly shape the top but do not remove more than one third of the bush height.

4. Remove old leaves and pruning debris from the garden bed. Dispose in a trashcan to prevent the spread of blackspot disease 5. Apply a light application of general all-purpose fertilizer. There are several products that include roses in the label. Some of which also include an insecticide if insect problems are of concern.

6. Apply a fresh layer of mulch and water everything in thoroughly to complete.

It is possible to transplant roses this time of year, but it is advised to wait later in the year after plants go dormant. Transplant survival increases and high temperatures decrease. If you find yourself looking to add a new rose bush to your garden then take the time now to review mail order catalogues and online plant nurseries for information on new and different roses for the coming year. Garden centers and plant nurseries have their best rose bush inventories right after the New Year when the bare root shipments start to arrive.

August 15th is National Check the Chip Day, so we wanted to bring awareness to this life-saving device for your pets! Microchips are small devices that are the size of a grain of rice placed in between the shoulder blades of your furry friend, and they are linked to you. They are the fastest and easiest way to be reunited with your pet if they get lost.

Microchips are completely painless for your pets, and they can be the difference between being reunited with your pet or not. Once a microchip is placed in your pet, the specific number associated with that chip is linked to your information (name, email, phone, etc.). Most vet offices and animal shelters have a microchip scanner, so if an animal is lost and brought somewhere, then they can scan and link the pet back to you.

National Check the Chip Day is a day where you should ensure all your pet’s microchip information is up to date. If your pet does not have a chip, consider making an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible to have one put in. If your pet already has a microchip, then call the microchip company to ensure they have the correct information on file.

Microchips can be the best way to get your pet back quickly if they get lost. While no one wants to think about their furry baby escaping, it is important to be prepared in case they do.
