Buras Man Cited for Crabbing Violations in Plaquemines Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents cited a Buras man for alleged commercial crab trap violations in Plaquemines Parish on July 16.

Agents cited Doan Nguyen, 54, for theft of crab traps, unlawfully removing contents, violating crab trap marking requirements, taking or possessing immature female crabs, and taking 20 percent of undersized crabs.

Agents were on patrol in Bay Cheri when they observed Nguyen running crab traps. Agents conducted a commercial license inspection and found Nguyen possessing another fisherman’s crab trap on his vessel and numerous traps not properly marked.

An inspection of Nguyen crabs revealed that he was possessing numerous immature female crabs, for which there is no season, and also possessed a container with numerous undersized crabs.

This is Nguyen’s second offense for theft of crab traps in 2021 and if convicted he faces up to a $950 fine. Additionally, the department shall suspend or revoke the violator’s crab trap gear license for a period of three years from the date of the conviction and no new crab trap gear license shall be issued to the violator during the period of suspension or revocation.

During the period in which the violator’s license is suspended or revoked, the violator may be present on a vessel commercially harvesting or processing crabs only if that vessel is equipped with and is actively using a vessel monitoring system accessible to the department. The violator shall also be sentenced to perform no less than 90 hours of community service. If available, the hours shall be served removing abandoned crab traps as a part of the derelict crab trap removal program or in a litter abatement community service program.

Using crab traps without required markings, taking immature female crabs, taking 20 percent of undersized crabs, and unlawfully removing contents of crab traps all carry up to a $950 fine and 120 days in jail for each offense.

Tony’s Take EVERYBODY MUST GET STONES Everyone has an ailment or two. Sore back. Allergies. Hot flashes. Migraines. Mine is kidney stones.

The first unforgettable experience came nearly 50 years ago when driving in Shreveport. I thought someone had shot me in my stomach and when I finished retching and pounding the dashboard, I made it home so my wife could take me to the hospital. When I say Linda Blair had nothing on me comparing her The Exorcist performance against mine I mean it. I cold have secured the lead in The Walking Dead from my two-hour waiting room routine, for I knew nothing about this insidious attack from a small calcium deposit gone wild.

Since then, Mr. Stone has visited me several times, leaving mostly on his own after attaching his barbs into my tender urinal and even fecal canals on occasion. The telltale signs are there when he comes to call: a feeling of nausea, then a subtle but increasingly painful poke in one of the kidneys, then the blood orange deposit from a trip to the toilet. Once the cookies are heaved, he’s taken full residence and will stay and make rest and sleep impossible until he is removed by flushing, surgical methods or just old-fashioned bathroom time until he decides he’s not going to hold on any more and will ride the water slide out of your life, sometimes even showing himself before leaving the scene.

I’ve never met Mr. Stone in person but the mantra of “drink more water” has finally taken hold. I don’t know if the pain is worse than childbirth (many women have said it is who have experienced both) and the thoughts of having a nagging back problem or migraines make me more tolerant of my occasional visitor. But I’ve been cutting down on meat and calcium consumption for a while now and the purchase of potable liquids will include less soft drinks, power aids, fruit juices, alcoholic or sparkling water products. From now on, half or more of my liquid intake will be water, clean from the filtered tap of my refrigerator and chilled, flavor-free.

To help me remember my commitment, I have turned to one Bob Dylan, who always looks like he had experienced a long-term kidney stone attack when very young. Dylan wrote a tongue in cheek song in the ’60s, even laughing at one time recording the lyrics, inspired by a reaction he received when he traded his acoustical guitar for an electric one while on stage. My generation’s hippies, spoiled from coddling during the ’50s following World War Two, were exercising their hippiness by trying to belittle another of our generation (Dylan) who was just a bit more hip (and beat, like the Beatniks of the late’40s through the early ’60’s). It didn’t work. The lyrics have been changed, as I have done in the past, to reflect the subject of the column. Good luck staying away from the stones while listening to The Stones, Dylan and the Beatles. How are you all dealing with the heat? Me, not so good. I was out cutting the backyard at 6:30 this morning because it is so hot. And with all the rain we have been having, my grass was very very high. I have a small backyard and it took me over an hour to cut it. Guess I will tackle the front yard tomorrow morning at 6. It is much larger than the front.

Well, as you can see, this time’s time project is not Halloween. Sorry...I have been tending to a sick relative and didn’t get a chance. But, my granddaughter, Carlea’, has been asking me for some time to paint her wooden deer head with sunflowers.She goes deer hunting with her Dad every November. And I must admit she is a very good shot. (She has one of her mounted deer heads in the living room.) So, I did manage to get one of those done for her. This was a simple and somewhat quick thing to do. The sunflowers are freehand painted onto the piece. There are three rows of petals, each done in a different color. I started off with Canyon Orange, the second row is Marigold, and finally the last row is Cadium Yellow. I did wet on wet painting so the colors would intermingle. I really like the effect.

The centers are done with Burnt Umber and Terra Cotta on a double loaded brush. I also added some Lamp Black around the edges of the center to set things off. The leaves are also done with a double loaded brush of Avocado and Foliage Green. Not what you were expecting but, I hope you like it. I will be at the house for a while so I will start on the Halloween/Fall project now. Have a great two weeks.

So what will your next project be? Mine.....Working on the Cats. They look like fun!

My next day fishing inshore for super strike the customers wanted trout. The tide was 3 tenths of a foot for the day. It was going to be another grind it out type of day. We started out finding a few trout we had to pick through a lot of shorts.

All 11 1/2 inches to 11 3/4 inches. As this was happening a big redfish decided to visit us and wake the customer up. It ran around the boat a few times. At one time during the battle i asked a nearby boat to net our fish. They had to take their lines in to prevent a tangle between boats.

Once the storm had cleared we eased our way out to the fishing grounds. On about the second cast we had one on.

I ran2 inshore trips for superstrike charters this weekend. On the first one they requested bull reds. They are from Pensacola and fish every day. The bull reds are not available in their area like we have here. On the way out we had to pull into a sheltered place for protection and safety from a massive 1 hour plus lightning storm.

Once the storm had cleared we eased our way out to the fishing grounds. On about the second cast we had one on.

After his brother having all the action it was his turn to switch rolls. Once he started catching he took over all the action. It was his brother’s turn to be the net boy.

2 times we had a good battle with a monster Jack Crevalle.

With this monster I had to chase it all around and the kid was loving the fight. This took away from our fishing untill they got it closer to the boat and was able to control better. It was his best battle of the day.

We ended up having a storm shortened day but still managed 8 bull reds, 2 Jacks, and broke off a few good fish. The next day

Conditions were good but the fish were small. We ran out of bait before 11:00.

The plastics were not producing as they were eating shrimp all morning. I was not far from Delta Marina so I suggested a run for resupplies. Their beer was low so I saved the day.

We continued adding to our catch still sorting through the small ones. My move for other bait and beer paid off. We only were able to put 26 in the boat as well as some sheepshead.

Words to GREAUX by GARDENING FOR HUMMINGBIRDS Producing your own fruits and vegetables or growing pretty flowers aren’t the only reasons why people enjoy gardening. There are gardeners of all types. When you start looking into the different garden ideas, you’ll notice there’s a niche for just about everything. From kitchen gardens to school gardens and succulent gardens to rose gardens, there is a little something for everyone. One gardening theme that has always been interesting to me is hummingbird gardening. Gardens are essentially mini ecosystems that support life for all organisms. In order Will Afton to create a hummingbird garden, you must ensure that the garden can provide food, water, and shelter. When all three items are provided, your garden will support a healthy hummingbird population that you can enjoy all season long.

Shelter is defined as a place that provides temporary protection from bad weather or danger. For birds in the garden, shelter is found in larger growing trees and shrubs. Hummingbirds use the interior canopy of trees and shrubs to protect themselves from predators, to seek refuge during thunderstorms, and to rest after long periods of flight. Any type of larger growing shrub will suffice this requirement. Azaleas, gardenias, and camellias are popular flowering shrubs along the Gulf coast. Viburnum, ligustrum, and pittosporum are larger growing choices that fit the same concept.

Water is needed daily by all organisms to stay alive. In many instances hummingbirds, find water on their own throughout the landscape. However, when planting and designing specifically for them it is important to include a water feature nearby. Accomplish this by using a birdbath or plant saucer and filling it with water. Fill the container with sand or pea gravel to provide a place for the bird to stand to stand. Believe or not, hummingbirds can drown if not given a safe place to access the water. Prevent issues with mosquito larvae by refilling the water daily.

Lastly, provide food by planting a selection of flowers, shrubs, trees, and vines that produce a continuous supply of nectar. Hummingbirds feed on nectar found in flowers and the insects that are attracted to nectar. The general rule of thumb when it comes to determining whether a plant has potential for attracting hummingbirds is having a tubular shaped flower. Citrus and loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) trees produce nectar in their flowers and provide good cover due to their size. Cigar plant (Cuphea ignea), turk’s cap (Malvoviscus arboreus), shrimp plant (Justicia brandegeana), and lantana (Lantana camara) make for excellent shrub like hummingbird plants.

As far as annual and perennial flower plants look for cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), salvia (Salvia spp.), red hot poker (Kniphonia uvaria), firecracker plant (Russelia equisetiformis), and beebalm (Monarda fistulosa). Try planting a mixture of flowers to create diversity in food source to keep your hummingbirds interested during the entire growing season.

Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our STARTCARES@HOTMAIL.COM volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, WWW.STARTFOSTERS.COM especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Fifteen fabulous START felines found homes at a recent adoption event. Here are six of our cats and kittens that are now members of families that love and care for them. We are so grateful to all who adopt rescued pets, giving them a chance to have a safe, happy life. In return, the pets provide their people with so much love, joy and companionship.
