Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents arrested a Slidell man for his alleged role as the operator in a fatal boating incident that took place on March 6 in St. Tammany Parish.

Alexander was allegedly operating a 24-foot vessel with four other passengers on board when they collided with the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge in the middle of Lake Pontchartrain around 6:40 p.m. on March 6.

Rod Willhoft, 33, of Arabi, was ejected from the vessel and entered the water without resurfacing. His body was recovered on March 7. The three other occupants were not ejected from the vessel but sustained serious injuries.

After their investigation, LDWF agents determined that Alexander was the operator and impaired at the time of the fatal boating incident. He was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.

Charges were filed and delivered to the office of District Attorney, Warren Montgomery, 22nd Judicial District Attorney for prosecution.

Vehicular homicide brings a $2,000 to $15,000 fine and five to 30 years in jail. Vehicular negligent injury brings up to a $1,000 fine and six months in jail. Operating a vessel while intoxicated carries a $300 to $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has closed the Middle River boat launch on Louisiana Highway 90 in the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) for renovation work. The launch will remain closed until further notice.

Construction work is expected to be completed by September 2021.

Improvements will include expanding the one-lane gravel boat ramp to a two-lane concrete boat ramp, new wooden docks installed, the adjacent staging slip dredged, and parking area redeveloped. This project is funded by the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) settlement through the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group (LA TIG) in order to restore lost recreational opportunities in Louisiana due to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

The Pearl River WMA, which consists of 35,618 acres, is located approximately six miles east of Slidell and approximately one mile east of Pearl River.

I usually just tolerate July. It’s normally hot, humid and hot and loaded with absentee clients and prospects on vacation or hunkering down in a cooler place than the Gulf Coast outdoors. This year, the heat hasn’t been nearly oppressive as in past years, but the rain has been historical in consistency and inconvenience as well as volume.

The mornings have not been the sauna we usually have in June and July and that’s amazing, given the amount of precipitation we’ve had since March. Actually, the consistent rain began around Thanksgiving and normalized after messing up the holidays. But March came in like a car wash and the rinsing hasn’t begun to cease as we approach mid-July.

Rain has disrupted schedules, events and pool maintenance, where a record pollen spring was exacerbated by the continuous water from the skies at the same time. This has led to delays in nearly every scheduling plan for people with outside disciplines, such as construction, landscaping and recreation. Meanwhile, employed blue collar workers don’t have enough hours in the day to complete their work, thanks to a shortage of other workers who would rather milk the system for as long as possible by receiving free money than to return to the jobs that made their lifestyle before Covid-19. Everything is more expensive now, thanks in part to federal and state giveaway programs that make hiring workers at 2018 wages a thing of the past. Once the dole runs dry, however, there should be a return to normalcy and those workers who held employers for ransom by returning to work for unsustainable pay levels will reap the harvest of fewer hours and quicker layoffs. The marketplace is a cruel and two-sworded mistress, ya know.

As far as reign, silliness and stupidity still hold sway in Washington and in many of our sister states as unenforceable and poorly developed systems, organizations and individuals continue to show why we should drug test anyone whowants to run for office.

Never have as many crazies run our cities and states as now and we have other highly visible business and media leaders who have no intention of uniting any disparate groups. It’s not in their best interests to do so, as the country continually takes body blows from a bunch of moral and character flyweights and acts like there is nothing that can be done. So, too many continue to take shelter in their Starbucks, cellphones and Facebook pages, ignoring reality and a growing discontent from outside of their universe.

As our counter culture continues, those self-important and morally crippled freaks who represent its leadership continue to pull back on the reins that only exist to guide, not stop, freedom of expression and different ideas. In the 50’s and 60’s, young students fostered Free Speech Alleys everywhere, encouraged by their liberal but sociologically stable professors to do so. Today, only the liberal tag remains as the Berkeleys and San Francisco State Colleges persona of my generation are long gone. As mentioned before, only a strong dosage of backbone will stem the flow of bile and hatred from those who may have grievances but are addressing them in terms and actions that will ultimately bring their demise. A country has never been shamed into conquest and it won’t happen here. If you are so disgusted with who you are by birth or heritage, your education has made you that way. Each individual suffers and benefits by their ancestory; achievement and success have come to those who categorize their ancestory and take the positives and their own free will and character and persistence to rise above their situations. Successful people rarely blame others or conditions for their previous plight; they address inequity in more positive and cooperative ways and generally leave a positive footprint on society. If you truly believe a certain group is historically flawed beyond redemption and acceptance in your world without an entire guilt-ridden cleansing is impossible, then your feces must not emit an odor and you must think the term “God” is a prefix to your name. Get over yourself!

Hope your Fourth of July was a Fabulous one, even with the rain. I managed to cook BBQ for my daughter and grandchildren with an umbrella over me and the BBQ pit. Yes, I got wet but it was worth it. And it was kinda fun. When was the last time you actually got drenched in the rain doing something you like doing? I love being outside, cooking on the grill, rain or shine.

With that being said, I painted a rustic Patriotic Gnome. This can be displayed year round. And instead of a flag being included in the flowers, you can add a tag at the bottom with someone’s name on it. There are so many possibilities with this cute little piece. Instead of having a top hat, what about a regular Gnome cap? Change the flowers from daisies to something else. I have several other Patriotic pieces that I am in the process of painting. I love painting these and most of all displaying them. Hope you like them.

Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next craft project be? Mine......I’ll be painting Patriotic chunky wood pieces. Or maybe starting on Halloween.Well, I guess I don’t know what my next project will be. I just know it will be fun!!!

The summer time offshore action is happening when conditions will allow. This is Eddie Burger’s catch onr day. The big guy went 151 pounds.

Beth and I had a chance to get out on our own. Our targeted fish of the day was trout. The first fish was a sheepshead. After that all we caught was. Hardhead catfish and our targeted fish.

Unfortunately the keepers were 1 out of every 4.

One of the trout excaped the jaws of a predator only to join us for dinner.

Here is the other side. I am guessing it was quick enough to have excaped the jaws of a porpoise.

We finished our wonderful day on the water with 20 keeper trout and 1 sheepshead.

The next day Bobby and Sheri asked for a pair of red snapper first. This was not as easy as many expect. I did not want to gotoo deep for them. The deeper we go the more sharks we have to battle.

Once we got our 4 red snapper all over 16 inches but none over 18 inches.

They were having a good time fighting the fish but could not come up with something over 35 pounds.

We could not get a large black drum either. With 4 snapper and 2 croaker in the box and it being after noon it was time to look for some other fish. Just before we were about to change gears Bobby hooks into something very big. This may be the one we want.

The fight was like dead weight at times then it would start running and taking drag. Once at the surface we hd a good sized sea turtle. Once close I cut the line sonit could go free.

This was not the end of our encounter with it though.

The hook in it’s mouth had also gotten hooked in the left front leg. This was not allowing it to swim free. It was just going around in circles. We had to go get it and get the hook out of the leg. It still had the hook in the mouth but that will rust out quickly.

It is now swimming in the gulf freely. We ch a nged our plans and went looking for some slot redfish. For the next 2 hours we only found 2 trout. I was thankful they were keepers. It was a long and hot day. I was about to call the trip when i tolk them “thqt is the wqter I am looking for “. I eqsed into this little drain qnd in less than 15 minutes we hqd 10 bequtiful redfish in the box.

I was blessed with a great way to end our day.

To most people, the month of July is full of summer vacations and weekend BBQ’s. However, home gardeners see this month as a peak time for harvesting figs in the backyard fruit orchard. Figs are some of the most popular backyard fruit trees in the region. They are easy to grow and work well into an edible landscape theme. As fig trees start ripening this season, take notes on different varieties and learn the general growing requirements needed to produce your own crop in the future.

Figs, like all other fruit trees, need full sun to be productive. Avoid shady areas with lots of trees and be aware of large structures that block out the sun. Look for areas out in the middle of the yard that receive sun in the morning, mid-day, and the afternoon. Water drainage is the second thing to look for when planning the location of your new fig orchard.

Avoid areas that pool water after a rain event. Look for a well-drained area with decent slope.

All of the recent rains should give you good idea as to where water collects in your yard. Once sun and drainage requirements are met, start looking into different fig varieties that grow well in our area.

Common Fig Varieties Celeste – The most widely planted fig in the area. A hardy plant that grows well throughout the region. The fruit is bronze to light brown with a light strawberry pulp, and it ripens late June through July. Celeste is excellent for fresh eating, canning, and preserving.

Brown Turkey – Also known as ‘Texas Everbearing’, the ‘Brown Turkey’ fig produces medium to large fruits with brown to maroon colored skin and amber colored pulp. They main crop ripens two to three weeks after ‘Celeste’ and continues through August.

LSU Purple – A medium sized red to dark purple fig with a light red colored pulp. The main crop ripens in July. Produces a mild flavor with a high sugar content.

LSU Gold – A large yellow pear-shaped fig with a light red, pink colored pulp. ‘LSU Gold’ is excellent quality for fresh eating and preserving.

Figs are popular during the summer months because they are ripe and ready to eat. However, it is not recommended to plant trees just yet. It can be done but the best success occurs during the dormant season. November through February is the best time to plant or transplant figs in the landscape. Plant availability is also better in the fall because plant nurseries and garden centers start stocking fruit trees prior to the fall season. Look for potted plants with good clean foliage when selecting a starter plant. Three-gallon containers about 10-12 inches in diameter are the most common size available and work in every situation. Once rooted, fig trees grow very fast and fill out in no time.

Buying a potted plant is not the only way to get a new tree. Stem cuttings taken during the summer months and rooted in soil is referred to as softwood propagation. Use the soft wood from the current season’s growth to make 6-inch-long cuttings. Cut stem pieces just below a node (area where leaves emerge from stem). Place cuttings in a suitable rooting medium such as sand, peat, or a mixture of the two with at least one node below and one node above the soil line. Rooting hormone powder encourages root develop but figs root easily and therefore does not require it. For the next 3-4 weeks, mist the cuttings with water a few times throughout the day. Keep the cutting piece and soil slightly moist but not soggy. Once the cuttings start producing roots, gradually reduce the misting frequency. After 4 weeks place newly rooted plants into an area with partial sun for a couple of weeks before introducing them to full sun. You can raise the small plants in pots before transplanting them into the garden.

Yameii Yameii and Mimi are five month old sisters. They are a bonded pair and must be adopted together. Although they are very similar in appearance and behavior, Mimi stands out with a signature orange spot on her head. Yameii has an orange glow throughout her coat. Both kittens have short hair with tabby stripes on their faces and legs, but they are ticked on their back and sides. The ticking and the orange color suggest that there is Abyssinian in their background. How To Keep Your Pets Calm During Bad Weather Bad weather is not fun for anyone involved, but especially not for pets with higher than usual anxiety. For some animals the loud thunder and rain beating on the windows can be the scariest thing in the world. For this week’s article, we wanted to take a moment to cover some ways to keep your pets calm during severe weather.

As we sit in the middle of hurricane season, it is increasingly important to prepare both ourselves and our pets for anything that may come this way. Part of hurricane prep is learning how to care for your pet’s needs in bad weather in case a storm does hit, and you are in an area that is impacted.

First and foremost, our pets often rely on us for comfort and safety. Because of this, never leave your pets alone during bad weather, especially if it makes them nervous. Having to conquer fear alone is hard enough but having to do it without your best friend can make it infinitely harder. If you do have to leave for any reason during a storm or bad weather, do your best to either bring your pet with you or find someone to stay home with them so they do not have to be alone.

Once the storm hits, give your pet a safe area to hide that makes them feel safe. For many animals, this can be their crate, a quiet room, a dark corner of the house, or even your lap. Once the animal has established an area where they feel secure, fill it with their favorite toys, a shirt that smells like you or some snacks to keep them busy. If your pet wants to be close to you, stay with them and gently pet them to let them know it will be ok.

When the weather has passed, allow your pet to unwind at their own pace. Let them settle down and realize the bad weather is gone without forcing them out of their safe space too quickly. Bad weather can be scary for our furry friends sometimes, but with our help we can make it as easy as possible for our fur babies.

All non-business ads for merchandise are FREE if the items are priced this way:

If you are selling one item - it can’t be more than $300 If you are selling two items - each item can’t be more than $200 If you are selling three items - each item can’t be more than $150 All free ads must be completely written by the seller whether placed in person, by mail, fax or email and be legible to be printed. Persons placing multiple ads -or- consistently sending free ads will be barred from running ads in our paper.

No more than 3 listed items will be accepted. Limit of 20 words per ad, including phone number(s).

We DO NOT take FREE ADS over the phone.

Items without prices will be edited out of the ad unless it is a garage sale ad.
