In a bit of a surprise move, the LSU Tigers chose a young man whose planning, recruiting and coaching work ethic just might return the LSU baseball team to the prominence they had under Skip Bertman and the first half of the Paul Mainieri eras.

Forsaking the perceived obvious choices of coaches from Notre Dame, East Carolina and Louisville and the lack of interest from a couple of SEC skippers, the Tigers reached out West and secured Jay Johnson, a man who will have to be introduced to coonasses and crawfish, steamy summers and shrimp, purple and gold enthusiasm and étouffée Ed Orgeron speech patterns and oysters.

Coming from one of the dozen premier college diamond programs, Johnson worked his way up from the Sacramento Valley town of Oroville down to San Diego and then to Tucson, home of the Arizona Wildcats who have several College World Series trophies of their own, but none recently. But Johnson took steps to insure the return of his team to Omaha and they were the runner-up to Coastal Carolina in recent years but were the first team eliminated this year. This is a Bill Belichick-style leader without Inflationgate; passionate about details, user of multiple whiteboards for notes, leaving nothing to chance. He is a triple threat on the field, in the recruiting arena and in the locker room, making sure his teams can score runs at any time and have the balance of hitting, pitching and fielding to go with his infectious enthusiasm. We’re not sure about his interview style; Mainieri was one of the best, but Johnson should be able to explain himself well to the Tiger faithful.

LSU has now made two extra base hits in their recent coaching hires with Kim Mulkey for women’s basketball and now Johnson.

Johnson recognizes talent and leadership and will be the near-perfect fit for Baton Rouge. He might not have the bona fides of a Bertman or Mainieri regarding pitchers but at 35, there’s room for Johnson to grow. Meanwhile, the Tigers will have a man who can be a generational coach and perhaps stay in Tigertown for 20 or more years. LSU is finally getting smarter in their coaching hires, bypassing the still political and under-experienced Board of Supervisors or other political forces that brought some real stinkers to town over the past 40 years with their “recommendations”. Please - let it be “goodbye forever” to the Les Miles and Smokey Lavals of the world, especially the Mad Hatter. And please - let the housecleaning remove the tainted staffers in the Athletic Department who allowed the scandalous behavior to continue for years along the Mississippi.

Hope you are all doing well and staying dry and cool. This is definitely indoor weather.

So it’s a good time to catch up on all those crafts we put aside because we were too busy doing other things. That is, unless you work outside your home. In that case, I am sure you will catch up soon.

With the Fourth of July being so close I decided to adapt one of Laurie Spelta’s newest designs to a wooden heart I found at Michael’s. This was a fun piece to paint and if you sit and only paint, with no distractions, it should only take about 2 1/2 hours to finish this. The blue parts are painted with Deco Americana Blue Harbor and shaded with Deep Midnight Blue. The red areas are Santa Red and shaded with Soft Black. The white stripes are Snow White and shaded with Fawn. Yes, Gnomes are still very popular in the decorative painting world. I love painting them. I just wish I had more time to dedicate to my crafts. When I am crafting I totally lose track of time.

Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....I just got my chunky wood. Looks like standing Gnomes will be around soon.

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 8.13.20 SCOUTING TRIP I called Joe to see if he wanted to go scouting with me. He said he was just a out to call me to see if I wanted to go with Lee Nguyen and him. We discussed it and decided inshore would be better as the seas would be building through out the day. They jumped on with me instead.

I found a trout but the bite was not there and the dirty water moved in. I was forced to look elsewhere. I kept moving around. In one spot Lee hooked up to a nice red that took him around some oyster poles and also around the boat. You know this guy was ready to come to dinner with us.

The dirty water kept following us. I made a 7 mile change and found a small drain with some clean water. It was not happening. My next spot to look was 4 miles away. As I was going there I saw a drain that looked promising about a mile into my journey. I made a hard right and headed to the drain. At this time I only had 2 reds in the boat and 1 trout. Things were soon to change.

The bite was right there. We finished off without ever moving again. Another good outing.

Words to GREAUX by WATER CONSERVATION: EFFICIENT LANDSCAPE IRRIGATION PRACTICES During hot summer weather, garden plants utilize more water in an effort to manage heat stress similar to the human body. Doctors advise drinking plenty of fluids while working outside while at the same time horticulturists recommend supplemental irrigation for our landscape plants. This goes for all types of plants including annual flowers, Will Afton perennial shrubs, landscape trees, and turfgrass. Follow the guidelines below for proper irrigation practices that will help your garden plants survive the summer season.

• Use organic mulches in flowerbeds and around trees to insulate the soil and prevent excess water evaporation. There are several different types of mulches available including, pine bark, pine straw, colored hardwood chips, and cypress bark. Choose a color and texture that works best with your landscape and apply a 2-3 inch layer to the root zone for maximum effect. The eventually breakdown of organic mulches will provide nutrients and help with compacted soils over time.

• Keep a watchful eye on container plantings. Container soil is designed to be very welldrained and will be subject to drying out more often than native soil. A simple water breaker and wand are great tools that allow you to reach in and around potted plants.

Thoroughly soak with water until it drains from the bottom of the container.

• Irrigation systems can make lifer easier while supplementing irrigation. There are many different types of applicators including, drippers, micro sprays, and drip tape. Irrigation systems can made custom to almost every situation. Applicators that apply water directly to the soil are more efficient than overhead types.

• Adjust irrigation systems to run in the early AM. Plants take up more water during the first half of the day than at the end of the day. In addition, watering in the morning allows for excess water to be evaporated throughout the day, preventing many disease issues.

• Adjust irrigation system frequency to water for longer periods of time, not so often. Deep waterings followed by dry conditions promote expansive root systems, which in turn make plants drought resistant. Short daily irrigation intervals encourage shallow root system and should be avoided.

• Routinely inspect irrigation systems for leaks and proper working spray heads. Most systems are designed with flushable enclosures. It is a good idea to flush the system from time to time to clear any debris that might have found its way inside.

• Check weather forecasts. Watering the garden before a rainfall event can actually improve water penetration into a soil.

Summer is the largest intake period we see at the Louisiana SPCA. As soon as spring begins, breeding season for dogs and cats begin and any animal that is not spayed or neutered can potentially have a littler of puppies or kittens. Usually, puppies and kittens need to be at least two months old to their adoption debuts, resulting in an uptick of animals in the shelter during the summer. Each year, puppies, kittens, strays and all kinds of animals enter our doors with the hopes of being united with their forever families. Many summers, we find ourselves at full capacity with animals patiently (but excitedly) waiting for their humans to find them.
