Whether it’s Covid or the Monkey Flu, Biden or Trump, antifa or The Proud Boys……haven’t we had enough? Mother Nature has and she is visiting our region with what feels like the hottest June of all time, although it’s not quite there officially. So, Inflation, take a seat, border issues, sit your butt down, energy crisis, chill out. We’re not going to see much happen until mid-July on any front until the GDP report comes in and later in the summer when economic voodoo sends the country into another spinning direction.

Recent emigration of Mexicans and Blacks from California, the unceremonious removal of a city DA so incredibly obtuse to real life even in San Francisco and a really well-constructed argument to send Roe v Wade away and let the individual states handle abortion as they should in this case and in so many where the Constitution grants individual powers to either the federal or local state government is a sign that the grown-ups are finally coming home. The house still may be a mess and the spoiled brats on the left and right may contnue to bicker but it is the hint of a beginning of a responsible trend. SCOTUS’S reviews of local New York gun laws along with Roe/Wade may signal an end to over-the-top court political posturing and return to it’s role as the arbitrator of the law, not of the opinion marketplace. time will tell.

But the heat! Believing in global warming or not, more concrete and combustion continues to keep our May through September trimester sizzling. This year, money to keep cool doesn’t have to fight money to seek transportation to another, cooler summer spot because the money ain’t there and even a pricey vacation still saps the energy as well as the pocketbook and its only a short respite from the rest of July, August and September at home.

Our family finally found itself in a position to install a whole house generator and have it ready for the coming weather mayhem of mid to late summer and sometimes beyond. Like insurance, we really don’t want to have to use it, but after dozens of seasons with our portable generator, trips to the mower shop for servicing, frustrating gasoline lines and the nasty decisions of which appliances to run and when to run them will be a thing of the past. Hopefully, we’ll be able to buy getaway gas in the event of a Katrina or Ida but at least the house and its contents won’t be brutalized by lack of power. We were also able to remove a couple of threatening 100-foot trees that would have reduced our house to kindling had they fallen.

I did not think that in just a few weeks the news would get even better! Not only has mens basketball and football been landing some good recruits, never wanted that Manning boy anyway, but Baseball and Women’s basketball just received major boosts to their programs.

Let us start off with Kim Mulkey and her amazing recruiting skills. Here is a trivia question for you, when was the last time LSU landed the #1 recruit not only in the state of Louisiana but in the entire country? Well, you would have to go back twenty years to 2002. That was when this reporter was a Junior at LSU and a girl by the name of Seimone Augustus signed to play basketball for Coach Sue Gunter. The future #1 draft pick now has her jersey retired and will have her statue outside the PMAC unveiled soon.

If, the newly signed, Mikaylah Williams a 6-foot-1 guard from Bossier City, Louisiana who chose LSU over Ole Miss, Baylor, Duke and Texas A&M comes close to Augustus than they will be hanging more than just a jersey from the rafters but a national championship banner as well. Williams won gold with Team USA in the 2021 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup, where she was MVP, and recently earned a spot on the U.S. team for the FIBA U17 World Cup, which will compete July 9-17 in Hungary.

She was named the Gatorade Louisiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year in March after averaging 22.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals as a junior at Parkway High. Williams was a finalist for the Naismith High School girls Basketball Player of the Year award. The 6’1” guard was the lone junior among the group of finalists.

Vanderbilt transfer pitcher Christian Little was the No. 15 prospect in the Class of 2021 by Perfect Game. An early enrollee in 2021, Little was expected to be Vanderbilt’s next stud pitcher, following in the footsteps of Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter. In his two years in West End, Little had a 4-4 record with a 4.65 ERA and 95 strikeouts over 81.1 innings.

Now, I did say something about replacing the bat of Jacob Berry didn’t I? Well, that was done in a more powerful manner. North Carolina State slugger Tommy White is the latest to join the LSU Tigers out of the transfer portal. Tommy “Tanks” batted .362 with 27 home runs and 74 RBI during his freshman campaign at NC State. White, the 2022 ACC Freshman of the Year, batted .362 with 85 hits, 12 doubles and 27 home runs, which shattered a 32-year-old record for the most home runs by any NCAA freshman.

White led all freshmen in home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage in the 2021 year. He also added hits in 45 out of his 55 games, including 26 multi-hit performances and 19 multi-RBI games. So, yes the cupboard is getting refilled all over the court and especially on the diamond. This is before the current #1 Recruiting class is projected to sign on with Johnson.

Oh, yes I can not stop without mentioning the commitment of Arch Manning to the Texas Longhorns. Quotes from two very important people come to mind. First, everyone knows that all the Manning’s went to a very rich private school in New Orleans. The quote is from the infamous Coach Amos Cormier when he said, “We never have to worry about our little sister across the river!” Being from the Westbank of New Orleans and a proud product of the public school system this was what we always said about the Newman Greenies.

The second quote is from almost every LSU Alum known to man. “If you are not a Tiger than you simply are Tiger Bait!” So, we anxiously await the young Manning to attend that school in Austin.

Especially, since we will get to officially welcome them to the SEC. Get ready big guy, because this is big boy football!

Can you believe how fast this year is going by? I know, some of us are thinking it is not going fast enough. The June temperatures are brutal! But,listening to the weather person assures us we have had temperatures like these before. I guess we are getting soft. Too accustomed to the modern conveniences. Do you ever long for the days when we moved at a slower pace and really enjoyed the feeling of true accomplishments when you achieved what you had been working on for days, weeks,and sometimes even months?

Nothing extravagant, just making that flower bed you had been planning forever, or finding the perfect spot for that orange tree you bought a year ago. Or to finish painting that bedroom wall that has taken you forever. Small things that really made you feel good. Ok,some of them can be big things.

The project I am sharing with you today is one of those small things I never got around to. I started this piece about 3 weeks ago and there never seemed to be time to complete it. There was always something more pressing to do. Well, with 4th of July being just days away I knew I had to get it completed. Besides painting the Uncle Sam Gnome my daughter asked me to paint for her birthday (which is tomorrow). This piece is made of 2’ thick wood and stands alone very nicely. The designer is Laurie Speltz and I love her designs, they are so much fun to do. Once I started painting, I ended up painting 4 of these. I ran out of chunky wood is the only reason I stopped.

Well, that’s it for this time. Wishing you all a very Safe and Happy 4th of July!!! Let’s remember what Independence Day truly stands for. I love my Freedom and will defend it! Words to GREAUX by MAGNIFICENT MAGNOLIAS As the weather turns hot, many landscape plants seem appear idle as they cope with high temperatures of summer. Not the magnolia!

Several species within the genus of Magnolia bloom and thrive during the summer months. The magnificent white flowers are familiar to not only gardeners but also florists and interior designers. The name comes out of respect for a famous French botanist, Pierre Magnol, who lived in Montpellier, a city on the Mediterranean coast in southern France.

Mr. Magnol was one of the first scientists to group plants by similar Will Afton morphological features. This is one of the predicates of what we know refer to as plant families. Carl Linnaeus, the creator of binomial nomenclature (scientific names) solidified the genus name when he used it to give southern magnolia its scientific name of Magnolia grandiflora.

The southern magnolia gets most of the spotlight but there are a few other species that are found in the trade and sought out by gardeners. The saucer magnolias (M. x soulangiana) are pretty when they bloom in late winter and early spring. Coming in between 20-30ft tall and 15-20ft wide, these magnolias feature blooms in different shades of pink. Sweetbay magnolias (M. virginiana) are native trees that reach 3-50ft tall and 20-30ft wide. In the wild they typically grown with a single trunk, but in the trade, it is common to see more than one cutting in the pot, giving them a multi-trunked appearance. Sweetbay magnolias have a light green colored leaf with silvery undersides and produces white blooms in the summer. The bigleaf magnolia (M. macrophylla) is larger growing specimen averaging over 50ft tall and 20-30ft wide. As the common name implies, the leaves can be up to 30 inches long and 8-12 inches wide. The flowers are some of the biggest averaging up to 14 inches or more in diameter. All the species listed above are deciduous, meaning they lose all of their foliage in the fall and winter.

The most iconic species is the southern magnolia (M. grandiflora). These evergreen trees reach heights over 50ft tall and over 50ft wide. They produce large white fragrant flowers during the summer months. They are very versatile in the landscape. Southern magnolias can be used a basic backyard shade tree, or they can be planted in a line to provide screening and privacy.

There are a couple of popular cultivars available in the trade. ‘D.D. Blanchard’ grows 30-50ft tall and 20-30ft. It still blooms the same fragrant white flowers, but the foliage sets it apart. The leaves are a dark green and the undersides are a rusty, almost orange color. ‘Little Gem’ is the most compact option available. It reaches 25-30ft tall and 10-15ft. Both the leaves and flowers are more compact than other cultivars of southern magnolia.

With all the different selections of magnolia throughout the region it can be difficult to decide.

Look at magnolias in the landscape as they bloom through the rest of the season. There is plenty of time to make a decision. The best time to plant a magnolia, or other large trees and shrubs, is during the dormant season (November through February). So, take notes now, make a selection, and put shovel to soil later this year.

Heat Advisory Tips for Pets Since summer has officially begun, it is important to be aware of the rising temperatures and to pay close attention to the heat advisories in our area. When the US National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the area, all pets, including outdoor cats, must be brought inside for the duration of the advisory.

Signs that your pet is overheating may present itself as excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling and mild weakness. Symptoms can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting, along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees.

Animals with flat faces, like Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.

If your pet is displaying signs of heat exhaustion and making it to the vet may take a little bit, try cooling your pet down by gently rubbing an ice pack on them, massaging their legs, or even cooling them off with cool water from the garden hose. The most important piece of advice for saving your pet’s life though is getting them to the vet in a timely manner.
