HAS IT REALLY BEEN 30 YEARS?

As we enter another summer, full of humidity, humility becomes a larger factor. Even though we still are a visible and effective print product, our market continues to shrink as more and more young people take the convenient (but also lazy) way to obtain their information. They are not as sharp as previous generations and certainly more self-focused and self-aware.

They are also less realistic and if certain national trends continue unchecked, their ignorance and fantasy will not provide them with the self-discipline they need to call up their core values as Americans. This country has made a boatload of terrible decisions in the past 245 years but the people’s self-reliance and an infectious goodness have kept the American dream a goal for billions of people worldwide.

We celebrated 30 years as a “shopper” or “classified “ publication last month. No party. Just another day at the office. Add those years to the nearly four years of transition activities between my 20-year broadcast career and May 19th, 1991 and we’re looking at nearly 54 years of providing information, entertainment and opinion to hundreds of thousands…perhaps millions…of people all over the western and southern United States. It’s been mostly fun and unlike the majority of income earners, it has been something I have rarely regretted doing. I am my own boss and it allows me the freedom to wander and experiment, put off and put on, counsel and correct. I have had unique experiences in my life and several firsts, including being the youngest person ever to be hired by The New York Times, earning my first Social Security eligible check working in a movie with John Wayne and procuring a seat on the 43 yard line in the Superdome Press Box to watch the LSU Tigers complete the most sensational college offensive football season with a win over the only team to beat Alabama twice in a national championship game - Clemson.

My former high school football teammate in Los Angeles, Rene Lachemann, set a record for wearing a minor or Major League uniform - 61 consecutive years - from his time as a 14-year old batboy for the Los Angeles Dodgers to his retirement as a sidelines coach for those same Dodgers just last year. That helps put my years in broadcast and print into perspective. That doesn’t count the 18 months of work I accomplished with the West Coast Edition of the New York Times or the freelance film and photography work during my college years in Los Angeles and San Francisco. But retirement was never a goal. It’s another stage of life that I am not ready to fully embrace.

The South has given me the stage to succeed and begin my life’s wind down as perhaps no other region of the country could. The unique state of Louisiana helped round my views of life and love, which began and was formulated in California. People here are still real people and understand the balance of work, family, faith and country. You have to look long and hard to find someone with a permanent chip on their shoulder or lacking the ability and desire to share with others. Nature still rules here and so does family.

Resources are strained but still plentiful compared to the rest of the country. Our education and health profiles have always needed improvement but no area has the gumbo of food, music, sports, the outdoors and friendliness that Louisiana and its Southern Mississippi neighbor offers.

So I stay the course. A major re-boarding and re-railing of my multi-deck backyard has kept me focused and fit since the end of last summer. Mother Nature’s nasty weekend rain and cold schedule since mid-November has made completing the job continue two months or longer past my scheduled end date. But the fun and sense of accomplishment and the learning curve, not to mention working with my longest tenured associate on the project has been more than worth the injuries, time and financial commitments made since September. We had Covid but it was a brief and nearly invisible visit and we’re that much stronger and immune because of it. Most of our friends, associates, family and clients also fared well and we take the blessing as it comes to us through God’s blessings.

Thank you for continuing to use our products. We will continue to provide them as the future dictates. By this time next year, we will have surpassed the old Penny Pincher’s time in South Mississippi and will have seen the demise of yet at least one other longtime publication if trends continue as they have for the past several years. We don’t like to see print go and it never will disappear; it’s revival may be closer than most could imagine. But it will have to come with a new generation of dreamers and thinkers, guardians and guides, enablers and energizers, Constitutionalists, communications and confidence builders. I pray that there are enough out there to take the torch before the torch destroys rather than enlightens.

Summer is here! Let the fun begin! Park play dates, splash pads, BBQ’s and picnics! But what celebration would be the same without watermelon? PR make sure to stop by to see Mr. Russell Crowe at his fresh fruit and produce stand located right in front of Texaco gas station. My grandson and I purchased some delicious cantaloupes and watermelon from him today. They were so yummy!! He also has tomatoes, cucumbers, local honey and more, so make sure to stop by soon and tell him I sent you.

As I visited with Mr. Crowe, I asked him about our new sign in Peal River. It is located in the older part of town on Hwy. Spur 41 and reads “Jesus is Lord over Pearl River”. The sign is simply beautiful! I, for one, have wanted a sign like this in our town for quite some time now. Mr. Crowe said he did know who purchased it. It was none other than Mrs. Karen McQueen, council member Angela Galloway and himself that ordered, purchased, and put up this beautiful sign. Thank you very much for the sign to all that had a hand in it. After all of the tragedy that has recently been in our community this sign is a beckon of hope to us all.

Lastly many of you have been asking about out our Spur 41 Bridge that has been out for many years now. As of the last town update it seems we are getting very close to having our bridge.

At this time, DOTD is waiting for the groundwork on both sides of the bridge to dry out before the asphalt work can begin. If the asphalt is done with moisture in the ground, it will crack and not hold up to traffic. The bridge is completed and has passed all inspections. The Town is currently waiting for DOTD updates in order to determine the opening date of the bridge.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited four men for alleged recreational fishing violations on June 4 in Plaquemines Parish.

Agents cited Shaun Bertrand, 49, of Humble, Texas, Randall Godso, 50, of Prairieville, Jonas Ray, 50, of Opelousas, and Timothy Reed, 46, of Creekside, Penn., for failing to keep fish intact, possessing over the limit of red snapper, and taking red snapper during a closed season.

Agents were on a Joint Enforcement Agreement patrol with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations (NOAA) when they stopped the subjects in the Mississippi River near Venice to conduct a license and creel check on June 4.

Agents boarded the vessel and found the subjects in possession of seven red snapper and 14 red snapper filets. This put the subjects at 14 total red snapper and six over their allowed limit of two per fisherman.

The heat is here, it feels like summer! I am watering my plants everyday and still at times they look like they are wilting. Not looking forward to July and August. But don’t we say that every year. Yes, we do.

We want the perfect temperature year round. Wouldn’t that be nice? I really can’t think of any place that has the perfect temperature year round.

I decided to work on some bouquets for the cemeteries for Father’s Day. I really enjoy working with flowers as you all know. It is so relaxing to take a bunch of beautiful loose flowers and put them together to make an exciting design. The combination of different textures, sizes of blooms, types of flowers and of course colors can be very exciting and satisfying.

I love taking those loose flowers and creating designs. This bouquet is arranged with lilies, roses, daisies, and carnations.

I had one half of the group and Nathan had the other half. We could not limit out but we did get a respectable box for our efforts.

I have been running several trips. This one was for RJ hunting and fishing. They wanted red snapper first then go for redfish. Our red snapper quest was right as planned. We got to a close by rig and once I had them on the fish finder I set my trolling motor on spot lock. We proceded to make a two fish per person limit in good time.

His goal for today was to catch his first redfish. This presented a challenge as the bite was very slow. The boats around would get one every so often but they were not chewing as desired.

Eventually it was our turn. It turned out to be a very nice one and a great way to break the ice.

I ran another trip for Brent Ballay. On this one we had terrible weather. Our first area we struck out with only hard heads. Our second place which usually produces turned out to be jast as bad. I told him I was going two bays up to check out a place.

This turned out to be a good move. Once I had 4 in the box I called him in. By the time he got to me I had 7. He picked up 1 and I managed another and a flounder. This spot had slowed down. He moved around the point from us and quickly put 9 in his boat. I moved around there and finished up. He was Only 2 from his limit and we were all glad to get back in and get dry.

Did another trip and they asked for red snapper at the last minute. We went for them first as usual. Once that was done we concentrated on out targeted redfish.

The targeted redfish were playing hard to get today. We worked the rocks and marsh hard. This was the first and also his first.

We picked away on the rocks and worked the marsh areas also.

The redfish were not jumping in the boat today.

One of the things you learn while working as an Extension Agent is that most of the landscape issues, we encounter happen every year. Whether it be a disease problem, an insect problem, or even a plant availability problem, everything seems to have its time on the calendar. One of those issues that happens every summer is the appearance of webbing that covers tree trunks and limbs. Sometimes it’s only a small section and other times it may be the entire branch. Whatever the case, it is quite odd and can cause concern to the novice caretaker.

Will Afton To make a long story short, there is no need to worry about this insect. We consider them beneficial in the grand scheme of things. These little creatures spend their entire life on the trunks of trees and shrubs. Most of the time they go unnoticed. That is until a curious gardener notices a group of them when they first hatch or when the colony produces a white, grey webbing covering the bark of a tree. We refer to these insects as bark lice or tree cattle.

Bark lice are insects in the order Psocoptera and commonly referred to as psocids. They get the nickname because of their small size, like how some people call aphids plant lice. Others call them tree cattle because of the way they move together. If you look underneath the webbing, you can see small brown insects traveling up and down the bark of your tree. Bark lice nymphs appear dark gray with pale yellow bands between abdominal segments. The adults have shiny black wings that are held like a tent over their abdomens. The webbing itself does not cause any damage but merely provides protection from birds and other predators.

Bark lice do not harm the tree. They will feed on dead bark cells, fungi, algae and other debris growing on the tree trunk. In other words, they clean the trunks of trees. They even feed on lichens, the bluish-green scaly organisms found on the trunks of woody plants throughout the southeast region on the United States. This fact in turn makes them a beneficial insect in the landscape. They are working for you!

Because of this beneficial nature, I do not recommend doing anything about it. Sometimes the webbing may be unsightly. If this is the case, then I would suggest using high water pressure to physically remove the webbing from the trunk. You could let them remain. In a couple of months, it will blend in well with the festivities of Halloween. Add a spooky feel to your landscape this year by leaving bark lice alone and they will help decorate your yard with cobwebs and silk!

• Protecting Your Pets from the Heat • Summer is here, which means hot days are rolling in. Just like humans, our pets can get overwhelmed by heat and suffer from heat stroke if not taken care of. This week, we will go over some tips for keeping your pet cool as well as what you should do if you see a pet in a hot car. As a general rule, if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your pet. Pets can be prone to heat exhaustion and heat stroke if not properly cared for and left outside too long. Dogs to not have the ability to sweat, so keeping them cool is one of the most important things you need to do for your fur baby in the summer months. Keeping your pet cool can come in a variety of different ways. Allowing them to play in a pool or giving them dog popsicles are some great ways to help your furry friend beat the heat. Apart from those, ensuring your pet is not outside for too long can keep them cool and prevent them from getting sunburnt. When taking your dog for a walk, check the temperature of the concrete. If it is too hot for bare feet, then it is too hot for dog paws!

If your pet begins to display signs of overheating such as panting more than usual, lethargy, drooling or dark red gums, get to your vet as soon as possible. If making it to the vet may take a little bit, try cooling your pet down by gently rubbing an ice pack on them, massaging their legs, or even cooling them off with cool water from the garden hose. The most important piece of saving your pet’s life though is getting them to the vet in a timely manner. Now what should you do if you see an animal stranded in a hot car? Whether you are running inside somewhere for 5 minutes or an hour, leaving your pet in a car that is turned off is never acceptable. Cars heat up much faster than most people realize, and they can reach temperatures above 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. If you see an animal in a parked car that is turned off, there is a law in place to protect you from legal action if you follow certain steps.

The Good Samaritan Law was put into place to protect anyone that needs to enter a locked car in order to protect an animal or minor. There are some steps you need to take to get the animal out without facing legal repercussions. 1.Call out for the owner of the animal and make a good attempt to find them.

2.Call the local fire department, police department or animal control agency.

3.Make sure the car is locked and there is no other way to get in.

4.Use reasonably necessary force to enter the car and grab the animal.

5.Place a note on the windshield explaining where the animal can be found, your reason for entering the car, your contact info and that the authorities have been contacted.

6.Stay with the animal until the owner or authorities arrive and take the animal out of your care.

All non-business ads for merchandise are FREE if the items are priced this way:

If you are selling one item - it can’t be more than $300 If you are selling two items - each item can’t be more than $200 If you are selling three items - each item can’t be more than $150 All free ads must be completely written by the seller whether placed in person, by mail, fax or email and be legible to be printed. Persons placing multiple ads -or- consistently sending free ads will be barred from running ads in our paper.
