Summer is quickly approaching, and this summer looks like it could be a lot more “normal” than last summer for some many reasons. First, there is a rumor around town that our Spur. 41 bridge could be open to cross by the end of next week. Now that is some “normal” we have not seen in many years!

More normal things returning are events in our town. Starting in May with a “Fun Day In May BBQ Cook Off” at RiverLife Fellowship Church. Everyone is invited to attend this family fun, free event on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at 10 AM. They are looking for more grillers! Please sign up to register yourself or your team to help cook up the feast!! Remember to have your kids bring their swimsuits, towels, and sunscreen! Lawn chairs and pop-up tents are encouraged and can be dropped off Saturday. They will also be doing signups for sweets and treats! Again, this is a FREE Family event so be sure to invite your friends, family, and neighbors!

In other coming summer events, VBS is coming back!! First Baptist Church of Pearl River would like to announce their dates for V.B.S. are set for June 21-25. Please continue to look here or check with local churches for more V.B.S. dates for this summer.

Lastly, something our town needs to return to normal ASAP is our local job force. Almost every place of business in our town have NOW HIRING signs in their establishments. Jubilee, Family Dollar, Dollar General, El Rios, Lester’s and many others are in desperate need of employees. Some of our local restaurants have even changed their hours recently because they are so short of staffed. Please help get the word out about these job opportunities to everyone you know. Our town is counting on us to do our part. Thank you to all that have continued to support our local business in any way possible during these trying times. Let’s continue to make our town a town that our children will enjoy for generations to come.

228-344-3094 Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Three Men Cited for Charter Guide Violations in Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Enforcement Division agents cited three men for alleged charter guide violations in Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes on May 8. Agents cited Derrick Williams, 38, of Boothville, Devin Weaver, 22, and Robert T. Fountain Sr., 54, both of Biloxi, Miss., for failing to comply with charter boat regulations by not having a charter guide license, and failing to provide proof of liability insurance.

Agents were on patrol at the Chandeleur Islands in St. Bernard Parish and stopped Weaver and Fountain for charter guide compliance inspections. Weaver was unable to produce a valid nonresident charter guide license or a valid non-resident fishing license. Fountain was unable to produce the required liability insurance to operate a charter service in Louisiana.

In a separate investigation in the Venice area of Plaquemines Parish, agents cited Williams after LDWF received documentation of trips conducted in 2020 without the required charter guide license.

LDWF requires all charter fishermen to have a U.S. Coast Guard Captains license, a charter boat fishing guide license issued by the department and proof of at least $300,000 liability insurance all in their possession while on the water and fishing.

Not possessing the required charter guide license and proof of liability insurance carries up to a $950 fine and 120 days in jail.

Agents participating in these cases are Lt. Dave Nunez, Sgt. Jason Gernados, Corporals Thomas Forehand and Josh Laviolette and Senior Agent Kyle Haydel.

Hope you all are doing well and enjoying the dry weather, while we have blue skies, cause the rain will be here again before we know it. I totally enjoyed the beautiful weekend we had.

I can hardly believe Mother’s Day has just passed and Father’s Day is quickly approaching. Not to mention, all the graduations that are finally happening, and yes families getting together to celebrate, dance revues, and so much more. Things are finally starting to come around. I am not going to say, getting back to normal, because that will never happen. So we will go through the motions.

I know I am late with the Mother’s Day bouquets but, time just seemed to have gotten away from me. Infact, I did not even order my flowers from the supplier. Time slipped away from me. I ended up going to Sam’s Club to get the flowers and then went to the house and designed the bouquets. The flowers were in ready made bouquets for vases and of course that is not what I needed. But, I ended up making it work. The flowers were fresh and very pretty. Why not go by Sam’s, Rouses, or any store that sells bunched flowers, pick up a couple bunches and go home and make your arrangement. Don’t forget to trim the stems so they will fit properly in your container. You will have a feeling of total satisfaction knowing you made your own arrangement. Remember, you can make no mistakes, creating is an individual thing. No matter what you make, you created it, it is your personal creation, one of a kind. Be proud of what you create, even if you hate.Believe me, I don’t like everything I make. Email me a picture of one of your creations, I would love to see it.

Mrs Donna wanted to show her grand son a good day of fishing. We started out very slow. Our first fish in the box was a very respectable sheepshead. Hard head cats were plentiful. This was not looking to be a productive trip. About the third or fourth stop Mrs. Donna hooks, fights, and looses a very nice redfish. There myst be a cloud over my head.

After about 10 minutes Evan sets the hook on one way down this little canal. This fish was not getting away. The fishing expert was on the business end of the line and in total control. This was his first of the day but no where near his last.

That place ran it’s course so I moved on. Our next place had a decent bit of current so I changed up tactics a bit. I have something I refer to as my redfish finder. It worked well as Evan soon put another in the box. By now he was ragging on Grandpa as AJ was only getting the trash fish out of the way.

The fishing was not on fire but every place was starting to produce a bit. We were slowly putting some meat in the boat.

Well 2 were anyways. Gramps was just observing while keeping the stingrays and catfish busy. Oh he was also getting some jaw jacking from mighty little fisherman.

About 10:15 he talks to his dad and I heard him tell his dad “I already caught more redfish today than I ever caught in one day”. About this time he had caught 4 keepers and our day was not over yet. That statement made my day.

Even Mrs. Donna was getting into the redfish action. She decided it was no longer a catch and release day for them any more. Somebody had to help Evan do the grocery shopping.

By this time AJ was cetting noticeably irritated. His fish catching was not going well for him at all today. He had caught about a dozen blue crabs and several stingrays and catfish. Thinking

he had another stingray or catfish he was surprised when a nice flounder came to the surface. Unfortunately this would be his only donation to the dinner table for today. It was a good thing we had Evan along to take up the slack.

Just to keep him from getting homesick the lord blessed him with a largemouth bass to add to the bounty.

To finish the day Evan had the pleasure of doing battle with this bull to add to his already outstanding day. This boy fished hard all day. This was our last stop as the heat was almost unbearable.

On the way in I noticed some clean water back in a pond and detoured to take a look. Evan has the pleasure of hooking yet another monster. This time it is a 4 foot bull shark. It was fitting way to end the day. At the end of the day they asked him if he wanted to do it again.

You already know his answer. That trip will be in the next issue. Life is Good!

As the weather makes a turn for higher temperatures, many of our spring blooming plants fade into the background while others make their appearance known. One of the most elegant flowers in the Louisiana landscape is the magnolia and several are starting to open in our region. Several species within the genus of Magnolia bloom and thrive during the summer months. The magnificent white flowers are familiar to not only gardeners but also florists and interior designers. The name comes out of respect for a famous French botanist, Pierre Magnol, Will Afton who lived in Montpellier, a city on the Mediterranean coast in southern France. Mr. Magnol was one of the first scientists to group plants by similar morphological features. This is one of the predicates of what we now refer to as plant families. Carl Linnaeus, the creator of binomial nomenclature (scientific names) solidified the genus name when he used it to give southern magnolia its scientific name of Magnolia grandiflora.

The southern magnolia gets most of the spotlight but there are a few other species that are found in the trade and sought out by gardeners. The saucer magnolias (M. x soulangiana) are pretty when they bloom in late winter and early spring. Coming in between 20-30 ft tall and 15-20 ft wide, these magnolias feature blooms in different shades of pink. Sweetbay magnolia (M. virginiana) is a native tree that reach can reach 30-50 ft tall and 20-30 ft wide. In the wild, they grow with a single trunk, but in the trade, it is common to see more than one cutting in the pot, giving them a multi-trunked appearance. Sweetbay magnolias have a light green colored leaf with silvery undersides and produces white blooms in the summer. The bigleaf magnolia (M. macrophylla) is larger growing specimen averaging over 50ft tall and 20-30ft wide. As the common name implies, the leaves can be up to 30 inches long and 8-12 in wide. The flowers are some of the biggest averaging up to 14 in or more in diameter. All the species listed above are deciduous, meaning they lose all of their foliage in the fall and winter.

The most iconic species is the southern magnolia (M. grandiflora). These evergreen trees reach heights over 50 ft tall and over 50 ft wide. They produce large white fragrant flowers during the summer months. They are very versatile in the landscape. Southern magnolias can be used a basic backyard shade tree, or they can be planted in a line to provide screening and privacy.

There are a couple of popular cultivars available in the trade. ‘D.D. Blanchard’ grows 30-50 ft tall and 20-30 ft. It still blooms the same fragrant white flowers, but the foliage sets it apart. The leaves are a dark green and the undersides are a rusty, almost orange color. ‘Little Gem’ is the most compact option available. It reaches 25-30 ft tall and 10-15 ft. Both the leaves and flowers are more compact than other cultivars of southern magnolia.

With all the different selections of magnolia throughout the region it can be difficult to decide.

Look at magnolias in the landscape as they bloom through the rest of the season. There is plenty of time to make a decision. Survey different species of magnolia trees as you encountered them throughout the blooming season, take notes, and decide on what to plant. Garden centers will start bringing in larger plant material closer to the fall and winter months, when it is recommended to plant -0-

AUTUMN • MEMORIAL DAY TRAVELING • Memorial Day is fast approaching and whether you are traveling with your pets or boarding them, now is the time to prepare for the holiday weekend. Before traveling with or without them, ensure that your pet is microchipped and wearing visible identification and that all microchip information is up to date.

If you are traveling by car, ensure that you have all the supplies you will need like a well-ventilated crate, food, bowls, enough water, clean-up bags and medications. Give your dog some good exercise before loading up for a long drive. This will help keep his stress down. It is also a good idea to bring some favorite toys to help keep your pet’s stress level down.

If you are using a crate, ensure that it is properly secured and will not slide around. If you’re not planning to use a crate, make sure your pet is adequately secured. Avoid feeding your pet in a moving vehicle. Feed your pet a few hours before you plan to depart. It is a good idea to bring extra cleaning supplies just in case your pet gets motion sick. Do not leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle! During the summer months cars can heat up extremely quickly.

If you are planning to travel by plane, make sure to speak with the airline about their specific requirements. Small animals can often be carried onboard with you, but there are usually specific size requirements for their carrying bag or crate. Keep in mind that the airline will charge extra for taking a pet. Larger animals will need to be checked. Again, make sure to check with the airline regarding specific requirements for crates. We would recommend visiting your vet before any extended air travel, and keep in mind that traveling to foreign countries or Hawaii with your pet may require extensive documentation.

Make sure your hotel or other accommodation is pet friendly. Keep in mind many hotels will charge extra for pets. Most travel sites allow you to search specifically for pet-friendly accommodations. If you decide not to travel with your pet and need to board him or her, make sure to plan. Many boarding facilities get filled up during popular travel times!

If your travel plans involve staying with friends or family with other dogs, do some research on dog-to-dog introductions to make sure it is a smooth transition for your dog and theirs. You do not want to leave your pet in an environment that they feel unsafe in.

If your pet is not microchipped now is also the perfect time to make appointment to set it up.
