Belle Chasse Academy had their annual Boosterthon fun run fundraiser! The Boosterthon program lasted about nine days and included pep rallies, morning meetings, prize giveaways, fundraising updates, and team challenges all leading up to the fun run. Every student was able to participate, the weather was perfect and the students, staff and parent volunteers had a BLAST all while learning more about character traits! It was great to see so many smiling faces. Oh, and their fun run turned into a COLOR RUN because the school raised their goal of $50,000. Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Agents Investigating Fatal Boating Incident in Orleans Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents are investigating a double boating fatality that occurred on May 7 in Orleans Parish.

The body of Kennie Joseph, 58, of New Orleans, was recovered from the Industrial Canal on May 7. The body of Norman Wright, 39, of New Orleans, was recovered from the Industrial Canal on May 10.

LDWF will be the lead investigative agency for this fatal boating incident. LDWF agents believe that Wright’s 15-foot fiberglass vessel collided with a moored barge that was located parallel to the shoreline in the Industrial Canal.

So the next time you decide to design your own bouquet, throw caution to wind and jump in with both feet. I love coral, pink, and white together. Think about putting those pink lillies with yellow roses, or red roses with yellow lillies.

Instead of the white poms, what about lavender ones? I think that would look totally awesome.

TIGER MYSTIQUE IS A THING OF THE PAST

It didn’t take long for the LSU Tigers baseball program to enter the Witness Protection Program. It began with the criticism of Paul Mainieri, who isn’t Skip Bertman but did take the Tigers to one World Series championship and to the finals of another. And it was accelerated by the improvement of both coaching acumen and baseball facilities at most SEC campuses.

Today, the Tigers stand as a top 25 team in the ridiculous metrics that baseball has become. It has two of the top five or six college baseball hitters in the game and perhaps the best player, with Dylan Crews a legitimate five tool future star Major Leaguer. However, most of the rest of the team is made of porcelain, pot metal and bailing wire and its baseball strategy is nonexistent under first year coach Jay Johnson.

This perhaps is the worst team the Tigers have fielded since Bertman’s early tenure. They have no dependable starting pitcher, nor a lights-out closer. They have a relatively impressive collection of middle relievers but there is no Bogeyman in the lot. The left side of the infield should be renamed the Colander because of the leakage at shortstop and the inability to find a third baseman. And outside of center field, the outfield is meh in both offense and defense. The only thing the Tigers excel in this season is being Hit By Pitches, where they lead the nation, I believe. However, that statistic might just be the disdain many opposing college hurlers have for a team that led the country in hitting through much of early March and then disappeared faster than inflation appeared in America.

Catcher is the team’s bright spot. But the biggest problem this team has is lack of spirit. There is a definite disconnect between coaching and the team. There is no running game, little ability to protect the plate and strategy doesn’t seem to be a factor that Coach Johnson embraces. It has to be a labor of love for play-by-play man Chris Blair to continue to manufacture enthusiasm for an alleged team that has very little. A team that has been able to disappoint in league play nearly as much as Mississippi State and Vanderbilt needs to finish up its mid-week rent-a-game, shuffle off to Nashville and cry in their beer with the Commodores of Vanderbilt to see which team will finish their respective SEC schedules more pathetically.

After most of his first season, it seems Coach Johnson’s abilities are limited to playing Johnny Wholestaff with seven or eight pitchers on this team and trying to find a position to play where Jacob Berry won’t embarrass himself. Berry, a transfer from Arizona when his coach left for the LSU job, will have to carve a place in the Big Show as a designated hitter if he is to have any future in the game.

What began as an exciting and promising tenure under Jay Johnson has turned into a cluster flock of miscues, lack of killer instinct, nonexistent clutch hitting and disgraceful fielding for a team that was the Alabama of college baseball not so long ago. They say that times change and they are right. The Box is in danger of becoming The Coffin if this trend continues. Bertman and Mainieri were able to field top teams consistently despite having their recruiting classes gutted by the Big Leagues. Johnson hasn’t had the time to experience that problem but this season has brought too many other distressful situations for him to be concerned about losing potential players. He needs to find a way to bring out the potential of the players he has and soon. Meanwhile, The Box will close for the season after this week’s mid-week game as the Tigers neither deserve and certainly have not earned the right to host any form of college postseason baseball in 2022.

Mrs Donna wanted to show her grand son a good day of fishing. We started out very slow. Our first fish in the box was a very respectable sheepshead. Hard head cats were plentiful. This was not looking to be a productive trip. About the third or fourth stop Mrs. Donna hooks, fights, and looses a very nice redfish. There myst be a cloud over my head.

After about 10 minutes Evan sets the hook on one way down this little canal. This fish was not getting away. The fishing expert was on the business end of the line and in total control. This was his first of the day but no where near his last.

That place ran it’s course so I moved on. Our next place had a decent bit of current so I changed up tactics a bit. I have something I refer to as my redfish finder. It worked well as Evan soon put another in the box. By now he was ragging on Grandpa as AJ was only getting the trash fish out of the way.

The fishing was not on fire but every place was starting to produce a bit. We were slowly putting some meat in the boat. Well 2 were anyways. Gramps was just observing while keeping the stingrays and catfish busy. Oh he was also getting some jaw jacking from mighty little fisherman.

About 10:15 he talks to his dad and I heard him tell his dad “I already caught more redfish today than I ever caught in one day”. About this time he had caught 4 keepers and our day was not over yet. That statement made my day.

Even Mrs. Donna was getting into the redfish action. She decided it was no longer a catch and release day for them any more. Somebody had to help Evan do the grocery shopping.

By this time AJ was cetting noticeably irritated. His fish catching was not going well for him at all today. He had caught about a dozen blue crabs and several stingrays and catfish.

Thinking he had another stingray or catfish he was surprised when a nice flounder came to the

surface. Unfortunately this would be his only donation to the dinner table for today. It was a good thing we had Evan along to take up the slack.

Just to keep him from getting homesick the lord blessed him with a largemouth bass to add to the bounty.

To finish the day Evan had the pleasure of doing battle with this bull to add to his already outstanding day. This boy fished hard all day. This was our last stop as the heat was almost unbearable.

On the way in I noticed some clean water back in a pond and detoured to take a look. Evan has the pleasure of hooking yet another monster. This time it is a 4 foot bull shark. It was fitting way to end the day. At the end of the day they asked him if he wanted to do it again.

You already know his answer. That trip will be in the next issue. Life is Good!

Words to GREAUX by SALVIA, A SUMMERTIME STAPLE IN THE SOUTHERN GARDEN Thinking back on the last couple of years, we have a good run of lingering cool weather throughout the month of April. Now that we are halfway into May, it seems like all of the sudden someone just flipped the switch from perfect to downright hot. It seems as though summer Will Afton is already here with high temperatures near 90° F and its just May. As we get closer and closer to summer and days get even warmer, gardeners will be looking to plant flowers that can withstand the brutal onslaught of long, hot summer days. With all the different species of flowers available for use in Louisiana, some start to struggle when daytime temperatures start averaging above 85° F. The Salvia genus is interesting to study. They are member of Lamiaceae, the mint family, which gives them opposite leaf arrangement and square stems. Botanists have identified three different areas of origination: the Americas, the Mediterranean, and Eastern Asia. Early on, they were primarily used as ingredients in herbal remedies. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century where salvias became popular among those who garden for pleasure. Currently, Salvias are gaining popularity in niche gardening designs like butterfly, hummingbird, and pollinator gardening schemes because of the abundance of nectar produced in flowers. If there were one plant that would represent all pollinator plants, Salvias would do it proudly.

Because of their popularity, you will find many species of Salvia available at nurseries and garden centers. Salvia spendens offers some old and new choices. Most are familiar the cultivar ‘Red Hot Sally’, a small compact plant that reaches a height around 12 inches and produces a wonderful show of bright red flowers on spikes. Another series of S. spendens is gaining some attention. The cultivars ‘Lighthouse Red’ and ‘Lighthouse Purple’ are similar in appearance to ‘Red Hot Sally’ but they get about twice the size and offer a second color option. The ‘Lyrical’ series of S. nemorosa is also interesting to note. ‘Lyrical Silvertone’ is special in that it is two toned in color with deep purple and silver flower spikes. It reaches a medium size of 24 inches tall. Salvias can also be used for height in the back of a bed or as centerpieces in the middle of large island beds. S. microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ is a larger growing species. It reaches a height around 36 inches tall and produces gorgeous red and white flowers. S. greggii ‘Flame’ is another larger growing species that reaches a similar height but produces bright red flowers.

Many of the salvias mentioned in the last paragraph will re-seed themselves at the end of the season and return the following year as newly sprouted plants. This is usually a positive characteristic of plants but sometimes re-seeding plants can move around on their own in the garden. The mealy cup sage, S. farinacea, is a root-hardy salvia that will return each year from the previous root system. There are two cultivars planted at the LSU AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station, ‘Henry Duelberg’, a purple selection and ‘Augusta Duelberg’, a white selection.

Both of which survived the winter weather event back in January of 2018.

I have only scratched the surface by listing a few popular salvia varieties sold in plant nurseries and garden centers. As you visit various businesses, ask around to see what salvia plants they have to offer. You never know when you might find the next best plant!

DOG PARKS The weather is getting warmer and soon dog parks are going to start seeing an uptick in paw traffic! While it is important for your pet to have fun, it is also important for them to stay safe at the dog park as well.

Before even thinking about visiting a dog park, make sure your dog is upto-date on vaccinations. Never bring a dog that is under 4 months old or who is behind on vaccinations. For all dogs at the park to remain healthy, vaccinations are crucial to preventing diseases and infections. Additionally, make sure your dog is trained to “come” when called. While they may get distracted, it is important that you can call your dog away from potential trouble and that they listen to that command.

Learning how to read your dog’s body language is also important. Do not force them to play if they like to roam around the edges or stay near you. If they seem at all uncomfortable, take them for a walk instead of forcing them to participate in something they may not enjoy. Dogs have the temperament of toddlers, so they will get tired and cranky after about 20 minutes of intense play. Keep an out eye for when they tucker out so that you can bring them home for a nap.

Stay proactive and observant any time you bring your dog to the park. Do not get lost in conversation or on your phone. Watching your dog ensures that play does not get too rough and when they make a mess you can clean it up.

Dog play is ritualized aggression and sometimes it may look and sound a lot harsher that it is. Do not be a hoverparent but do interrupt overly rough play if your dog is constantly pinning other dogs or chasing them but not allowing himself to be pinned or chased. Role reversal is key to happy play. It is important not to let your dog bully or annoy other dogs. If your dog is stalking and bothering another dog, give him a time-out or take him out of the park.

There are several dog parks to choose from depending on where you live. Be sure to familiarize yourself with each park’s rules before you go.
