I can hardly believe we are already in May, this year is quickly flying by. How many projects have you committed to doing? Have you achieved those and gone beyond that number, or have you kinda slid a little and have not achieved your goal? Well, I can tell you for sure, I have NOT achieved what I had set as a goal for myself. Life just gets in the way sometimes and we just can’t help it.

With Mother’s Day just a few short days away, I am guessing you all are wondering what to get your Mom’s. My Mom loved when I made something for her. She would always say she appreciated those “homemade gifts” more than other. In my case, I am happy with a simple Mother’s Day card, because my daughter takes the time to read them and finds one that suits me perfectly. Then we go out for lunch!

I decided to share with you something that I painted today that I plan to live by from this day forward.

I plan on making every minute count, doing things that I haven’t done in a very long time, but loved doing. We are always doing for others, It is time for us to do things for ourselves, even if all we have is one hour a day. Spend it doing something you truly love doing. Wishing you beautiful Mom’s out there, a Very Happy Mother’s Day!!

So what will your next project be? Mine.......I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.

Archived Story from 5.06.21 There is no particular place that the fish are there consistantly. The water is muddy and 2 hours later it is clean. I am waiting for these fronts to break and the fish get into a reasonable pattern.

Everything is s lined up except the weather.

There were other fish passing by to keep the day interesting. We were able to land 9 good puppy drum and added them to our food collection. The box was looking better as the morning went on. We also had a lot of hard heads and sting rays to keep the poles bent.

I ran a trip for Venice Fishing Lodge. It was another very windy day. I had one spot in mind but we would have to cast into the wind. This would make things a bit difficult. As it was we were casting right into the beach and the angle was not directly in our face.

As it was we ended up having a one stop shopping day. This would be the only place we would fish. We started out by landing this 28 incher that gave him a good fight using the current to it’s advantage.

I had one other boat in my group. He was trying other places with no success. The talk on the radio made me decide to just sit and wait for the fish tocome past me looking for food. I had plenty to offer them. I called the other boat to find out what he had and see how he was doing.

He had nothing and decided to come join me.

I already had 3 reds in the box. It took him 20 minutes to get there. By this time we added to our catch with a nice trout.

Around 11:00 the winds got up enough that the guys decided to call it a day. We already had a nice box and conditions were not improving. It was a very successful one stop shopping day. I want to thank Venice fishing for useing me in their group.

Words to GREAUX by EASTERN BUCK MOTH, A STINGING CATERPILLAR Spring is a wonderful time of year, especially as our landscapes awaken from the dormant season, start blooming, and eventually put on new growth. The past several weeks have been quite lovely despite “enhanced” weather patterns from weeks prior. Azaleas have finished blooming, but Louisiana iris and landscapes roses are putting on quite a Will Afton show. However, with all that beauty there’s bound to be some ugly. And, that ugly came into the Extension office last week. We are starting to get numerous reports of caterpillars feeding on landscape trees, especially oaks. One of the common springtime pests that we deal with here is the buck moth caterpillar, also referred to as a stinging caterpillar.

Stinging caterpillars can refer to any lepidopteran species that produces spine-like appendages containing venom glands. When brushed against human skin, immediate pain usually follows.

After the initial sting, localized itching, swelling, and redness are common symptoms. Buck moth caterpillars don’t have a friendly appearance. If observant and attentive, one can easily see and avoid them. However, being a caterpillar looking for a place to pupate, they end up in places that you would never have expected and might cause conflict.

The Eastern Buck Moth caterpillar, Hemileuca maia, is a member of the insect order lepidoptera, which includes all butterflies and moths. Within lepidoptera, they can be further grouped into the family Saturniidae, which includes giant silkworms like luna moths and polyphemus moths.

Adult Eastern Buck Moths have a wingspan of 2-3 inches with black forewings and hindwings.

A narrow white band runs through the center of the wings providing a distinctive appearance.

The adult female’s body is all black, but males have a characteristic red tip on the abdomen.

Adults are active October through December where they fly around and mate. Females then deposit eggs on the branches of host trees, which happens to be oak trees, Quercus spp., here in Louisiana. The eggs are laid in masses 360° around the branch and start hatching January through the end of March.

The larval stage, or what most of us call caterpillars, are active during the months of April and May. They are large in size between 2 and 2.5 inches long. The head is somewhat reddish, and you can find small round white spots all over the body. The notorious feature that everyone remembers are the numerous bristly spines the run ion several rows down the back of the caterpillar. These spines are what cause the stinging sensation. They are so effective that some insect species are known to have look-a-like appendages that mimic the looks of Eastern Buck Moths.

Managing these insects is somewhat tricky because by the time we notice them, they are already in search of a place to pupate. Hand removal is going to be the best option to reduce numbers, but gardeners must be vigilant to make a dent in the natural population. Carbaryl (Sevin) is the long-time conventional recommendation to control caterpillars and can be applied to the area directly surrounding oak trees within the landscape. If Eastern Buck Moth caterpillars are a annual pest problem, then one should consider applying products like spinosad or bacilius thuringiensis (Bt) on to young developing oak tree leaves. As caterpillars feed on the new foliage, they will also ingest the pesticide, disrupting their life cycle. No matter what product you decide on using remember to read and follow label instructions. The label is the law.

OPERATION WHISKERS Operation Whiskers is the first regional coordinated effort to address animal welfare in Southeast Louisiana. With so many cats displaced after Hurricane Ida, we will continue to respond to the needs of our feline community cats, while also helping stabilize the impending cat population explosion that happens every year in Louisiana.

Within the first month of starting Operation Whiskers, volunteers and animal shelter personnel were able to impact over 1,080 cats, and within the next 6-8 weeks we project to assist in the TNR efforts of over 1,200 cats.

Operation Whiskers was designed to: • Rescue both owned and unowned cats still impacted by this devastating storm.

• Reunite lost cats with their owners, as our priority.

• Rehome cats that were once pets but cannot be reunited due to the impact of Ida. • Return sterilized and ear-tipped community cats through extensive TNR efforts, to include an initial 11 large-scale two-day events.

If residents of any of the five mentioned parishes see stray cats in their neighborhood, they should contact the proper local animal welfare organization, or fill out the trapping request form at www.louisianaspca. org/whiskersform. We are looking for more volunteers to help with Operation Whiskers. Whether it’s helping us with laundry, trapping community cats or helping us get the word out in your communities we can use your help!

Additionally, we need towels and sheets to help cats recover after surgery. Unfortunately, blankets are too heavy, but if you have sheets and towels that you aren’t using anymore, we can make new use of out of them!

We are also in need of fish flavored cat food to help attract community cats to traps but will accept any canned cat food (the stronger the smell, the better!) All donations can be dropped off to the Louisiana SPCA at 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd. in New Orleans from Monday – Saturday.

Charley Life is not easy at times for people or for pets. Charley is one of those pets who has had his share of hard times. He was a stray cat searching for food and shelter when he was rescued about seven years ago. For the first time Charley found himself in a safe, loving home. When one of his owners passed away, the home was sold and Charley was outside fending for himself again. Chased away from his former home by dogs, Charley traveled through the woods and found another home where cats were welcome. What he didn’t know was the daughter of his previous owners was looking for him. He has been rescued again and is hoping to find a new home. Charley is an 8 year old sweet, lap cat. He gets along well with other cats but is afraid of dogs. He would love a quiet home with a person to call his own. Email START if you would like to meet Charley or another wonderful rescued feline.
