April seems to be the month of many showers but if the saying “April showers, bring may flowers” is true Pearl River should be covered in beautiful flowers real soon. Until then try to stay safe and dry PR. This past Sunday we finally received a break from all the storms, and we were able to enjoy some sun time. But while most of us were able to soak up some much needed rays this past “SUN”day, there is a group of citizens that deserve a BIG PR THANK YOU for working through their Sunday to fix a very problematic situation in our town. Owner of ST. Tammany Residential Waste co., Brian Phillips noticed that with all the storms, many PR residents were complaining that the ditches were not draining very well. Mr. Phillips discovered that the reason for this was that many ditches were very polluted with trash. He and the STRW family took it upon themselves to have a “Funday” in the sun picking trash out the ditches on Crawford Rd., Rhonda Rd., Smith Rd, Gum Creek Rd., Pine St Ext, Radio Rd and more! THANK YOU, Mr. Phillips and the STRW family.

Speaking of water, our Local Fire Department would like to remind everyone, when the river is high and, on the rise, some roads may become impassible. Under the overpasses such as Exit 5A (Pump Slough Rd) and 5B are close to if not already impassible by most passenger vehicles. It may be an inconvenience to go another way but certainly not worth damaging your vehicle or endangering you and your passengers’ lives.

Belle Chasse Academy is an Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen school partner, a signature program of the Emeril Lagasse Foundation. The program teaches students appreciation for the source of food, understanding nutrition and healthy eating, developing life skills through food and development of culinary skills. 7th grade students were taken to the garden to see what produce was ready to harvest. Once harvested, students walked to the outdoor kitchen to learn about the nutrients and the health benefits of eating raw whole food fruits and vegetables. Students were given the task to create a smoothie recipe using at least one fruit and one vegetable they harvested from the garden. The students collaboration of ingredients from the garden were strawberries, spinach and kale, with addition of pineapples, blueberries, peaches, and bananas.

We had a good day so I decided to go to the East side of the river near my home. This is an area I have not been to in about a year. I waited for the fog to ease up before I went. The river kind of cleared to where it was safe to run without radar. Once in the designated area I found dirty water but decided to hit a few points. I found a bunch of 15 inch redfish.

The fog never left but slowly crept back into the area. I just eased along hitting a few places. It was soon I realised we were dealing with what I call sea fog.

I won the battle. I put this pucture up to show an important safety tip. When I am alone i always wear my inflatable life vest or PFD as the Coast Guard calls it. If something happens you have a better chance. Always change your cylinder every 2 years. I have had a time when mine was spent when I went to change it. Still have a manual way to inflate it if I am conscious.

I moved to an area that had a nice flow of water going through. There was a steady bite going on. I picked thru a lot of just unders but limited out on reds right there. I also released a few other keepers. With the fog getting thicker a friend was not far away. All he had was his GPS and the thick fog got him disoriented. We comunicated by phone and I located him with my radar. He followed me into a narrow drain and ran it to a pipeline tat took us to the river and back to the marina. Once in the narrow drain there was no fog but the fog was very thick to the edge of the marsh. It was too dangerous to think about taking a picture.

He was so thankful he cleaned my redfish limit for me. The 2 biggest were done on the half shell and the 3 smaller were filleted. I have plenty of fish so I gave them to a single mom so she could feed her children a few meals.

About the third place I was playing with some rat reds.

Suddenly there was a big splash and the drag starts singing. I knew at once I had a good redfish on. This guy did not like my looks and had no intentions of getting anywhere near the boat. It is things like this that keeps me doing what I do. Being alone I had fun getting the net while trying to control this beauty. As I was trying to net it he had other ideas. I had to put te net down to show the fish who was boss. It never gets old!

Words to GREAUX by SEASONAL COLOR FOR THE SPRING AND SUMMER GROWING SEASONS The wonderful views of snapdragons, violas, and pansy are starting to fade out. As these plants finish their lifecycles, its time to start thinking about warm-season choices for annual color flowerbeds and mixed container plantings.

To begin the big warm-season switch, start by cleaning up existing areas. Remove old plant material by pulling up dead plants and moving them to the compost pile. Any plant material showing disease should be separated and delivered straight to the trash can. Make a good effort to collect all remaining plant material to prevent the spread of disease. Weeds should be removed from the flower bed because they compete with our landscape plants for light, nutrients, and space. Once the area has been prepped, it is now ready to add plants.

Many gardeners get stuck on which flowers to choose for their spring gardens and with all of the different choices available, who can blame them? Look to add flowers that perform best in the warm season. Some of the more common choices you may find will include Ageratum (Ageratum houstonianum), joseph’s coat (Amaranthus tricolor), begonia (Begonia semperflorens cultorum), blue daze (Evolvulus glomeratus), cockscomb (Celosia cristata), spider flower (Cleome hasslerana), globe amaranth (Gomphrena globose), marigold (Tagetes spp.), Pentas (Pentas lanceolata), periwinkle (Catharanthus rosea), puslane (Portulaca oleracea), wishbone flower (Torenia foumieri), and zinnia (Zinnia elegans).

The LSU AgCenter Super Plant program is an advertisement program put forth to promote Louisiana plants that perform well in our environment. The program highlights exceptional plants that perform well under typical Louisiana environmental conditions. Growers throughout the state take advantage of the fact and propagate Louisiana Super Plants and sell them to retail stores where home gardeners can purchase. Each year the LSU AgCenter selects 3-4 plants for the program and this year there are some exciting standouts.

The first Louisiana Super Plant for 2021 is the Beacon series of impatiens. Finally, home gardeners have access to a solid plant with resistance to Impatiens Downy Mildew, a disease that wreaked havoc on the traditional varieties of impatiens that our parents and grandparents grew. Impatiens are a staple warm season annual flower that provides good color for the shadier areas in the garden. The plants will get a little over 12 inches tall and stay slightly narrower.

There are a total of 7 different colors with more being added as the research and development team continues making progress. The plants themselves have excellent genetics. When comparing different impatien varieties in the study, the Beacon impatiens were more robust and just looked like dominant plants. Give the Beacon Impatiens a chance this year in the landscape and see what you think. You might just find your next favorite plant!

National Pet ID Week is April 18-24 this year. This national week gives pet owners a great opportunity to make sure their pet’s identification is up-todate. ID tags and microchips give lost pets the best chance possible to be reunited with their owners.

It is estimated that one in three pets will go missing at some point in their life. Last year alone the Louisiana SPCA took in 2,007 stray animals and of those animals 542 were reunited with their families mostly in part to ID tags and microchips.

We recommend that every pet family prepares for a lost pet because it is so common. Pet identification is a crucial step to keep pets safe. Even the most well-behaved cats and dogs can get lost, runoff unexpectedly or get separated from their owners. Two popular ways to ID your pet, are to use a collar with a tag, and a microchip.

If you do lose your pet, the most important thing to know is that each parish has a “stray hold period”. This hold period is designed to allow you time to find your pet. Each parish’s hold period is different; for example Orleans Parish is three days and Jefferson and Plaquemines Parish are both five days. If you have your address listed on the ID tag and it is present on the animal when they come to us, Louisiana Law requires that the animal be held for seven days.

Steps to take if you lose your pet: • File a lost report! You can do it online at www.louisianaspca.org/lostreport • Call your microchip company. Make sure your info is up-to-date. They can even sometimes send out alerts to nearby shelters and vet offices.

• Search your neighborhood. Dawn and dusk are the most active times for lost pets to roam.

• Post lost pet flyers and post on social media sites like Facebook lost and found groups, Craigslist and Nextdoor.

• Call area vet offices.

• Leave food and water outside.

This week make sure your pet’s tags are correct and have the most up-to-date information on them. Also, check to make sure the information is readable and has not been scratched or worn away. If your pet is microchipped this week is a good time to check that is registered and has the most recent contact information for you. If your pet isn’t microchipped now is also the perfect time to make appointment to set it up. The Louisiana SPCA Community Clinic offers this service and appointments can be made online at www. louisianaspca.org/clinic.
