Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Belle Chasse Man Cited for Commercial Oyster Violations in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a Belle Chasse man for alleged oyster violations on April 13 in Plaquemines Parish.

Agents cited Shane Shelley, 38, for improperly filling out oyster tags, violation of the state’s sanitation code as it pertains to keeping adequate records on sight with the oysters, failure to maintain trip tickets and adulterating and misbranding seafood.

Agents conducted a commercial seafood inspection at Shelley’s business in Port Sulphur on March 30. When agents arrived they found 33 mini sacks and 11 whole sacks of oysters outdoors and not under refrigeration. The mini sacks were void of any harvester tags indicating where they were harvested from, harvester information and date of harvest. There were also no Department of Health log sheets on site showing the intentions of the oysters’ consumption.

After further investigation, agents determined the business was removing oysters from sacks that were already tagged and intended for shucking purposes by a certified shucker. Then re-sacking them into smaller sacks and tagging them for raw consumption.

The harvester information was also changed by falsely indicating Shelley being the harvester of the oysters when someone else harvested them. Agents found 52 mini sacks manipulated in a cooler on site.

All the oysters were considered adulterated since agents could not determine where they were harvested from, if proper refrigeration measures taken place for safe public consumption, or what harvester took the oysters.

Failing to fill out oyster tags properly and failing to maintain records brings up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail. Misbranding or adulterating seafood carries up to a $750 fine and 15 to 30 days in jail. Violation of the state sanitation codes carries up to a $25 fine and forfeiture of anything seized to the department.

Agents seized and destroyed a total of 85 mini sacks of oysters and 11 whole sacks of oysters as per department policy.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a Prairieville man for an alleged Wildlife Management Area (WMA) alleged violation in St. Bernard Parish on April 6.

Agents cited Andrew Messenger, 29, for violating the regulations on the Biloxi WMA by operating a vessel with “surface drive” motors as its form of propulsion.

Agents were on patrol on the Biloxi WMA when they observed Messenger in a pipeline canal near the southwest branch of Bayou Biloxi operating a vessel being propelled by three “surface drive” motors and actively bowfishing.

On the Biloxi WMA mud boats or air-cooled propulsion vessels can only be powered by straight shaft “long tail” air-cooled mud motors that are 25 total horsepower or less on the WMA. All other types of airboats, mud boats or air-cooled propulsion vessels (including “surface drive boats”) are prohibited.

Hi Everyone, I hope you all had a very Blessed Easter weekend with family and friends. I had an enjoyable weekend. Didn’t get as much accomplished as I had hoped to, crafting wise. But that is quite alright, time spent with family is more important. Even though I see my daughter, granddaughter and grandson on a regular basis, spending time with them on holidays is special.

A little while back I had mentioned that I was painting a series of 3 flower tags. Well, I finally got the second one done. It seems as though there is always one pattern I just have to do before I finish this one. I decided to work on these and get them finished. My granddaughter loves sunflowers, so this one may not be hanging around my house for long. I am sure when she gets back from Spring Break it will be hanging in her bedroom.

This should have been a quick paint. But no, it wasn’t. I had the constant company of Yami, my grandson’s black mischievous cat.

He likes to sit on the craft table and help me. You will probably see several mistakes but I guess that is what will give this piece character. This piece has several layerings of paint so there is substantial dry time between each layer. And with Yami;s help it made things more interesting.

Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine...............I don;t know. But I know it will be lots of fun. Even with Yami!

We had a good day so I decided to go to the East side of the river near my home. This is an area I have not been to in about a year. I waited for the fog to ease up before I went. The river kind of cleared to where it was safe to run without radar. Once in the designated area I found dirty water but decided to hit a few points. I found a bunch of 15 inch redfish.

The fog never left but slowly crept back into the area. I just eased along hitting a few places. It was soon I realised we were dealing with what I call sea fog.

I also released a few other keepers. With the fog getting thicker a friend was not far away. All he had was his GPS and the thick fog got him disoriented. We comunicated by phone and I located him with my radar. He followed me into a narrow drain and ran it to a pipeline tat took us to the river and back to the marina. Once in the narrow drain there was no fog but the fog was very thick to the edge of the marsh. It was too dangerous to think about taking a picture.

He was so thankful he cleaned my redfish limit for me. The 2 biggest were done on the half shell and the 3 smaller were filleted. I have plenty of fish so I gave them to a single mom so she could feed her children a few meals.

Suddenly there was a big splash and the drag starts singing. I knew at once I had a good redfish on. This guy did not like my looks and had no intentions of getting anywhere near the boat. It is things like this that keeps me doing what I do. Being alone I had fun getting the net while trying to control this beauty. As I was trying to net it he had other ideas. I had to put te net down to show the fish who was boss. It never gets old!

Words to GREAUX by SPRING GARDENING RECOMENDATIONS Springtime is an incredible time to be in the garden. Those beautiful spring-blooming flowers waited months to get a chance to bloom and now everything is exploding with color. With so much going on in the garden this time of year, it can be frustrating to know where to start.

One of the best ways to organize your gardening projects is to create Will Afton a to do list that you can refer to. It will help you to stay on track and maximize the time spent in the garden. Here is a list of common garden chores tasks for this time of year. Feel free to pick and choose what is relevant to your garden landscape.

Continue pruning spring flowering shrubs as they finish blooming. This includes plants like azaleas, camellias, indian hawthorn, loropetalum, and viburnum. These plants set their flower buds for next year in summertime. Pruning too late in the season will interfere with their bloom cycle.

Check evergreen plants for signs of insect pests. These plants can be prone to scale insects.

It is best to scout these problems early in order to keep them under control. You can use a horticultural oil spray to control them this time of year. Make sure to get good coverage because scale insects tend to feed on the undersides of leaves. Horticultural oil sprays need direct contact with the insect to be effective.

Take advantage of the springtime weather to continue replacing and adding new shrubs into the landscape. Later in the summer, when temperatures start to rise, heat stress will set in and make it difficult for the new plants to survive. Be sure to thoroughly water them in after you are finished.

Fertilize new planting plantings and existing perennials if you haven’t done so yet. Fertilizer will provide much needed nutrients to help plants grow. Quick release fertilizers will release their contents quickly whereas slow release type fertilizers release nutrients over time. Use this as a guide to determine how often to apply.

Continue planting warm season bedding plants to provide an abundant flow of color throughout the growing season. Choose plants like angelonia, lantana, marigolds, sunflowers, sunpatiens, vinca, and zinnias for full sun beds. You can choose from begonias, caladiums, and torenias for shadier spots.

Add a fresh layer of organic mulch to your landscape beds to help prepare them for summertime weather. Mulch will help prevent weed growth, keep soil temperatures cool in the summer, help retain soil moisture during times of drought, and they also provide a nice finished look to the garden. There are many kinds of mulches to choose from including shredded pine bark, shredded hardwood, and cedar. One of the most common mulches in southeast Louisiana is pine straw. Color one with a color and texture that you prefer.

Don’t forget about the lawn. As mowing season progresses, try to mow often enough that you remove about one third of the plant each time. It is also important to mow your lawn at the correct height. St. Augustinegrass should be cut between two and three inches tall, centipedegrass between one and two inches, zoysiagrass between one and two inches, and bermudagrass at one inch.

Lawns can be fertilized now if they haven’t been since the start of the spring growth period. Use lawn fertilizer at a rate of 1lbs Nitrogen per 1000ft2. For example, Scotts Turf Builder (32-0-4) contains 32% nitrogen. You should apply 3.1lbs of Scotts Turf Builder for every 1000ft2 of lawn grass. Take a soil sample to determine what elements are deficient in your soil. In some instances a different fertilizer product may be recommended based on what the soil analysis notates.

National Pet I.D. Week National Pet ID Week is April 17th-23rd this year. This national week gives pet owners a great opportunity to make sure their pet’s identification is up-to-date. ID tags and microchips give lost pets the best chance possible to be reunited with their owners.

It is estimated that one in three pets will go missing at some point in their life. Last year alone the Louisiana SPCA took in 2,125 stray animals and of those animals 586 were reunited with their families mostly in

part to ID tags and microchips.

We recommend that every pet family prepares for a lost pet because it is so common. Pet identification is a crucial step to keep pets safe. Even the most well-behaved cats and dogs can get lost, runoff unexpectedly or get separated from their owners. Two popular ways to ID your pet, are to use a collar with a tag, and a microchip.

If you do lose your pet, the most important thing to know is that each parish has a “stray hold period”.

This hold period is designed to allow you time to find your pet. Each parish’s hold period is different; for example, Orleans Parish is three days and Jefferson and Plaquemines Parish are both five days. If you have your address listed on the ID tag and it is present on the animal when they come to us, Louisiana Law requires that the animal be held for seven days.

Steps to take if you lose your pet: • File a lost report! You can do it online at www.louisianaspca.org/lostreport • Call your microchip company. Make sure your info is up-to-date. They can even sometimes send out alerts to nearby shelters and vet offices.

• Search your neighborhood. Dawn and dusk are the most active times for lost pets to roam.

• Post lost pet flyers and post on social media sites like Facebook lost and found groups, Craigslist and Nextdoor.

• Call area vet offices.

• Leave food and water outside.

This week, make sure your pet’s tags are correct and have the most up-to-date information on them. Also, check to make sure the information is readable and has not been scratched or worn away.

If your pet is microchipped, this week is a good time to check that is registered and has the most recent contact information for you.

If your pet isn’t microchipped now is also the perfect time to make appointment to set it up. The Louisiana SPCA Community Clinic offers this service and appointments can be made online at www.louisianaspca.org/clinic.
