Hope you all had a Blessed and Happy Easter. The weather was absolutely beautiful and I enjoyed the day immensely. The day was spent at my daughter’s home where we indulged in boiled crawfish with all the trimmings. The crawfish were cooked to perfection. The food and company were top notch and I really didn’t want the day to end. But all good things must always come to an end. But we have added to our memories.

The Easter Bunny has come and gone but my Spring Bunny will be hanging around for a while. This is a Laurie Speltz original design. I love her work. She makes happy, easy to make designs for all painting levels. Her designs always bring a smile and make me want to paint more than one of each design. I did change this one up a bit.

I enlarged the design, put it on a round surface, and added some grass. First the base coat, then some background was added to create some interest and finally lots of doodles on the carrots to make them more interesting and fun. Wouldn’t he look cute hanging around your front door welcoming your visitors this Spring?

Well, that’s my craft project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine......I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Agents Cite Two Mississippi Residents for Oyster Violations Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two Mississippi residents for alleged commercial oyster violations.

Agents cited Aaron L. Tillman, 45, of Long Beach, Miss., for violating the sanitation code for oysters on Jan. 20. Agents also cited Tillman on Jan. 26 for violate vessel monitoring system (VMS) regulations, taking commercial fish without a commercial gear license and fail to display proper boat number on the vessel.

Agents cited Jennifer Jenkins, 46, of Pass Chrisian, Miss., on March 9 for failing to maintain public records and failing to report commercial fisheries data.

Agents received a complaint that a vessel was actively harvesting oysters without the required suspended awning. Agents responded to the tip and found Tillman in West Karako Bay in St. Bernard Parish on Jan. 20 operating a vessel harvesting oysters without a suspended awning. Agents cited Tillman for a sanitation code violation and seized 87 sacks of oysters and returned them to the water. Agents also issued Tillman a warning for not having a properly working VMS. Any operator of a vessel that possesses an out of state oyster landing permit, must have an operable VMS unit installed on board.

Agents again observed Tillman in West Karako Bay on Jan. 26 actviely harvesting oysters. Agents performed another complaince check and found that Tillman’s VMS was not working and that he did not possess a scraper gear license. Agents seized 64 sacks of oysters and returned them to the water.

During the investigation, Tillman said he offloads his oysters to Cajun Shellfish LLC located in Mississippi. Agents were able to identify 1,475 sacks of oysters that were offloaded at Cajun Shellfish in 2020 without the proper trip tickets. Cajun Shellfish also failed to report four months of commercial fisheries data to LDWF in 2020.

Violating VMS regulations carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Failing to maintain records, failing to complete trip tickets and taking oysters without a required commercial gear license brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail for each offense. Violating the sanitation code carries up to a $25 fine and 10 days in jail.

Agents participating in the case are Corporal Michael Marques, Sgt. Austin Arteaga, Corporal Blaine Wagner, Corporal Brett Nabors and Agent Shea Schexnaydre.

The weather has been horrible to say the least. A lot of offshore trips have been canceled due to conditions. When this happens the customers that are already here go inshore. This was one of those days.

I had Jerry Hernandez and his 2 sons. It was a very windy day so my fishing was limited.

After a bit of looking dad hooks up and lands good redfish.

The bite was very slow. Finding clean water was next to impossible. The guys kept asking how bad it was offshore. I kept reminding them we were in sheltered waters. Jerry hooks up a good sized sheepshead.

Our biggest of the day was this beauty. It gave us a very good fight but eventually it found our net. This one was too big so we released it to fight again and keep breeding. We struggled to get a decent box of fish. A pick here and a pick there.

Our trophy of the day was a pair of flounder. My first of the year.

On the way back in i had to cross a pond.

Once in.open water the conditions were rough. Once across the pond I stopped in the pass, looked back at the guys, and asked “Now do you see what I was saying about protected waters?. They were a bit wet and the looks on their faces was priceless. We had a good day under the conditions God threw at us.

We got into some good slot fish also.

One every half hour was not setting the world on fire. There was some moisture in the form of a mist. Not fog but just as cold and raw as fog. It made for a very uncomfortable morning. It was bone chilling until about 11:00.

Katy gets hooked up on a good one. This is the fish she came here to catch. She was so tired from the fight her proud dad held the fish for the picture. She ended up being top angler for the day.

The offshore fishing is on fire when the boats can get out. Super Strike team put together a banner day and even paid the tax man.

Words to GREAUX by FERTILIZERS The beginning of the growing season is busy and exciting. As the weather turns warm, gardeners come out in groves to start weeding flowerbeds, planting flowers, and applying mulch. Both garden centers and home improvement stores advertise and promote gardening products during this time of year. Garden tools, gloves, and pesticides are some of the more common products available. The most popular product by far, other than the plants themselves, is fertilizer. You need it for your plants to live. Without it, your plants will not bloom, fruit, or Will Afton grow properly. While this is all true, some of the fertilizer products can be slightly misleading. People are always asking about what the best fertilizer is and which one they should choose for their landscape plants. The answer is different for every garden.

Soil testing is the first step in determining a fertilizer program for any type of plant such as lawn grasses, vegetables, or landscape shrubs. Fertilizing is the supplemental application of essential plant nutrients. The soil plays an integral role in providing nutrients to plants. A soil test analysis provides a survey of what nutrients are readily available in your soil. It also shows what nutrients are deficient. Choose a fertilizer that provides nutrients that are reported deficient by a soil test. That is the best answer to best fertilizer question.

The LSU AgCenter, along with other land grant universities, provide a soil testing service to the public. Check with your local extension for information on how to submit a sample.

To compare different fertilizer products, it is helpful to understand the fertilizer label. Products labeled as a plant fertilizer must contain a “fertilizer analysis” on the label. A fertilizer analysis displays the content of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium for that product. These three elements represent the primary nutrients required for healthy plant growth. Three numbers separated by dashes are used to show the percentage of each element (N-P-K). Use the analysis to determine which fertilizer to use in a home fertilization program.

Complete fertilizers contain some of all the nutrients. Vigoro Tree, Shrub, and Evergreen Fertilizer (16-4-8) is a good example. Fertilizers like 8-8-8 and 13-13-13 are also examples of complete fertilizers. Incomplete fertilizers contain only one or two of the primary nutrients. Calcium nitrate (15.5-0-0), super phosphate (0-17-0), and muriate of potash (0-0-60) are popular examples.

Controlled release fertilizers provide nutrients to the soil over an extended period. The products release nutrients anywhere between a few weeks to several months. This allows for less frequent applications and prevents excess nutrients from leaching out of the root zone. Osmocote is a well-known brand of slow-release fertilizers.

Organic fertilizers are made from materials that are derived from one living organisms such as animals or plants. These products are becoming more and more available. They are not concentrated like conventional fertilizer, but they still provide primary nutrients. Black Kow Composted Cow Manure (0.5-0.5-0.5) and composted chicken manure (3-2-2) are commonly seen products that fall under organic complete fertilizer category. Blood meal (12-0-0) and bone meal (0-10-0) are examples of organic incomplete fertilizers.

Choosing the right fertilizer is like putting together a puzzle. The soil test analysis is one side of the puzzle while the fertilizer is corresponding piece. It’s all about supplying nutrients that are deficient. Don’t guess, soil test!

- DOG FIGHTING April 8th is National Dog Fighting Awareness Day, which attempts to bring awareness to one of the cruelest forms of animal abuse: dog fighting. Dogs that are forced to participate in dog fighting frequently suffer extreme physical and mental abuse.

Often times, dogs that are used in dog fighting are kept chained up or in cages with little access to basic necessities until they are forced to fight. In the cruel world of dog fighting, it is kill or be killed. These poor animals are used as nothing more than entertainment and deserve to live much better lives and circumstances than they are given. Usually animals subjected to dog fighting have their ears mangled or tails docked in inhumane ways in order to hide the dog’s body language or reduce the areas the other animal could grab.

Dog fighting is illegal in every state, but tens of thousands of people still ignore the laws, and the animals needs for profit or entertainment. According to law enforcement agencies around the country, dog fighting is often associated with other illegal activities such as illegal gambling, drugs and firearms. Spotting the signs of potential dog fighting could be key in saving countless animals’ lives and preventing future crimes. Looking for signs such as mangled ears or docked tails, dogs on heavy chains or tethered up, dirt rings around where the dog is being kept, or dogs chained inches apart from one another can be the first steps in stopping dog fighting and should be reported to local authorities immediately. Dogs that have experienced dog fighting usually have facial scaring and puncture wounds around their face, head, neck, chest or limbs.

No dog deserves to go through each day fearing for their lives, and the cruel and inhumane “sport” of dog fighting is one of the worst forms of animal abuse. It is up to each of us to put a stop to this cruel and inhumane punishment unfairly cast upon these helpless animals Be their voice and report suspected dog fighting by calling 9-1-1.
