Tony’s Take TRIBOU’S TWISTER “People say tornados sound like a dozen freight trains when they approach. This one sounded a lot Scarier and louder. We’re used to hearing freight trains behind our house but Tuesday’s storm was a lot worse”.

These were comments from Jill Barthe, one of the survivors of the EF-4 tornado that struck Arabi and Chalmette two weeks ago. Her house was damaged and the one fatality from the storm occurred just across the street from her home on Benjamin Street in Arabi.

Jill was on the phone with David Tribou and his partner, Ryan and Ryan’s sister, Kari , when the twister headed towards the 40 Arpent Canal on the northwest corner of Arabi, an area recovering well after it was devastated by Katrina in 2005. But dozens of the newer homes and some of the older places were shattered or severely damaged by the storm. Just a mile away, also on Benjamin View from Chalmette of tornado Street, Tribou and Ryan were watching the storm develop. David is the person who puts this going through Arabi. North of Judge Perez Dr. newspaper together every two weeks, a man who I have worked with more than eight years. It was filmed by the folks huddled in Tribou’s house as the twister approached from the southwest.

The video, which went viral on WWL and worldwide, was one of the most graphic captured, showing the dual and sometimes triple funnel sisters dancing around the tornado.

After waiting a while, Tribou and his relatives tried to get to Jill’s house that evening but could not get through. Tribou said he was only able to get to the area last weekend.

Tribou said the first thing he noticed at Jill’s was the red brick veneer hiding the open space under Jill’s house had fallen and that the porch and other outside areas showed serious damage.

The roof on the second floor was partially missing and other obvious damage was visible.

One of the surprising developments was the lack of insured homes that were affected by the storm.

Apparently some long-time residents had paid off their homes and had not bothered to keep insurance in effect.

Tribou said from his vantage point during the tornado that the debris field was very visible. Ryan spotted the tornado and Kari told them to call Jill. Jill had already gone into her pantry closet with her husband, two daughters and family dog which was protected by a bonus room stairwell.

Kari called their friend, Jill, as the storm approached. Jill said the call might have saved her family’s lives because she was about to leave the pantry to retrieve an item when Kari’s call came. Jill stayed put and the tornado passed over quickly, leaving a shaken family and serious damage but everyone was safe.

Tribou, who never thought about it before, said the event has stirred interest in the phenomena of being a storm chaser. The power of these storms created the storm chasing genre more than 50 years ago, mainly in Oklahoma. Having been on the fringe of that fraternity and having met and interviewed Dr. Ted Fujita, the man whose name is honored with the F scale (ne: EF scale, for Enhanced Fujita ) rating of tornados, I can relate to David’s fascination. I lived in Oklahoma 2 1/2 years and never spotted a twister. David has and he was closer and in a situation he wouldn’t want to repeat.

Two weeks afterwards, St. Bernard residents are still seeking financial aid as this storm did not meet the FEMA requirements for disaster relief. If you care to help, contact St. Bernard officials in Chalmette and ask about what you can do to help.

Having been in our home for more than 20 years, my wife and I have had our share of tree damage and downed trees. One menace to us and our neighbor was a 110-foot pine that could have split either home without a problem. Since the tree was in the area between us, we took equal responsibility for its removal.

It only took two to three hours to remove it safely. I’ve posted a picture to show you what we were afraid of. Since my neighbor had the front of his house bisected in August by Ida, both of us had a graphic message of what might happen if the pine stayed.

We also had a second pine removed that had a structural issue. That tree was not as big but 80-footers are just as dangerous. Now we’re ready to install a natural gas-powered generator before the next storm season. Demand is high and it may not be ready for this upcoming season but we’re tired of gasoline lines, portable generators, evacuations because of impending power shortages and loss of groceries.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Mississippi Man Cited For Crab Trap Theft in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife of Fisheries enforcement division agents cited a Mississippi man for alleged crabbing violations in Plaquemines Parish on March 31. Agents cited William Epperson, 60, of Pass Christian, Miss., for theft of crab traps and unlawful removal of contents. Agents were on patrol near Venice when they received a complaing about a shrimp boat keeping crab traps that were caught in trawls. Agents stopped the vessel being operated by Epperson in the Mississippi River. When agents boarded the vessel they found Epperson in possession of 11 serviceable crab traps belonging to four other fishermen.

Shrimper and crab trap interactions are defined in state law and state that if a fisherman catches serviceable crab traps, they must return them to the water. Theft of crab traps and unlawful removal of contents brings up to a $950 fine and 120 days in jail for each offense.

The department shall also suspend or revoke the violator’s crab trap gear license for a period of one years from the date of the conviction and no new crab trap gear license shall be issued to the violator during the period of suspension or revocation. During the period in which the violator’s license is suspended or revoked, the violator may be present on a vessel commercially harvesting or processing crabs only if that vessel is equipped with and is actively using a vessel monitoring system accessible to the department. In addition, the violator shall be sentenced to perform no less than forty of community service. If available, the hours shall be served removing abandoned crab traps as a part of the derelict crab trap removal program or in a litter abatement community service program.

Agents participating in the case are Lt. Adam Young, Corporal Tom Forehand, and Senior Agent Austin Landry. The case will be forwarded to District Attorney Charles Ballay for prosecution.

Three Men Cited For Charter Guide Violations in St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited three men for alleged charter guide regulation violations in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes in March.

Agents cited Jacques Laboureur II, 41, of New Orleans, on March 5, Matthew Hines, 30, of Covington, on March 19, and Aaron Wilmoth, 24, of Belle Chasse, on March 24, for failing to comply with charter boat regulations. Agents were on patrol in the Hopedale and Venice areas working charter fishing guides when all three men were stopped with paying customers on board their vessels. Laboureur and Wilmoth had not renewed their charter six pack licenses for 2022. Hines did not possess any charter licenses and was not licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard to take people on his vessel for hire.

LDWF requires all charter fishermen to have a U.S. Coast Guard captains license, an LDWF charter boat fishing guide license and proof of at least $300,000 liability insurance all in their possession while on the water and fishing. Failing to have a charter guide license carries up to a $950 fine and 120 days in jail.

Agents participating in the case are Corporal Blaine Wagner, Senior Agent Kyle Haydel, and Senior Agent Shea Schexnaydre.

So how do you feel about Springing Forward? There are ups and downs where I am concerned about having longer days. The down side for me is, after work I stay outside longer, eating later than 6 p.m., and before I know it, the clock is hitting 10 p.m.. Managing on 5 hours of sleep is not really not that great. But I am getting outside things done.

I am sure you have all seen these unpainted wooden cutouts at HobbyLobby. Well, another one of my favorite artists did a class on these and of course I had to take it. The wood was relatively inexpensive and with it being 40% off made it a lot better. I did change some of the colors and the flowers on the bottom of the boots. Unfortunately, I only purchased two of the blanks. The wood really drank up a lot of the paint and even though I base coated the piece three times some of the dark lines still showed through. On the second one that I paint I will make sure to use a darker base coat than go back over it with my lighter Spring color.

I did add a beaded hanger this time. I wanted to paint the beads in different colors but really didn’t have the time. I may do that on the next one I paint. Wouldn’t this look cute in a wreath? I do like it alone also. I am thinking a little Welcome banner at the top maybe. More ideas to play with. Might have to dust off the scroll saw and cut some of these myself since my store is out of these. Although they do have some really cute bugs that can be painted. Will have to go there again this week.

Another simple and fun piece to add to the collection.

So what will your next project be? Mine.......I don’t know. But ,as always, it will be fun!

80th Birthday week! - Part I My family came in for a week of bonding and my 80th birthday party. Although I have been here 18 years only 2 have been here before. This was a first time for my daughter, Tammy, both being here and catching redfish. She began with this beauty.

My brother’s daughter Leesha, also her first for everything, started out with this keeper.

Our day was just beginning.

The bite was starting to get better. We had a little bit of tangling and going into the canes but managed to double up on this father/ daughter combo.

Leesha lost a monster way back in the canes.

It had to be cut by a barnical because the mono leader was cut and had a thin curl like a toothy critter had nailed it. The doubles continued with my brother and his daughter doing the honors. At least this time my brother had a smile. His fish was a bit more respectable this time although the girls greatly out fished him all day.

The girls finished off the Day in style with a pair of nice reds.

The following day it was a miserable day to be out but we gave it a short try anyway.

My brother was the only person to hook up. He caught 2 good size sheepshead but conditions were not favorable so we called it.

Words to GREAUX by PLAN TO PREVENT FIRE ANTS. Solenopsis invicta, or more commonly referred to red imported fire ant, has been causing trouble all throughout the Southeast US ever since it was introduced in Mobile, AL back in the 1940s. Since that time its currently spread to 13 states in the southern US from North Carolina to Florida and westward to parts of California. One of the major concerns Will Afton of the red imported fire ant is the sting. Worker ants can sting repeatedly and will attack anything that disturbs their mounds or food sources. To make it even worse, these worker ants will bite you at the same time. The symptoms of the sting include burning and itching followed by the formation of a pustule. If you have ever encountered this, then you know how much of a problem these pesky creatures can be. They create mounds in wide open sunny areas like parks, lawns, meadows, and raised bed vegetable planters. Though we may not be able to rid imported red fire ants from the region we can, however, do a few things to keep them out of our yards and away from our houses.

It can be confusing when walking through the pest control section at a home improvement store with all the different products labeled for use on fire ants. There are two types of products that are used to help manage fire ant populations to keep them under control: baits and contact insecticides. When used in combination they can efficiently reduce the number of fire ant mounds in your yard. Fire ant baits are pesticides that are combined with corn grits and soybean oil and applied to the entire area. While out foraging, worker ants will take the bait back to the mound where it is then shared with the queen, which then she is either killed or becomes infertile. The downside to using baits alone is that they take a considerable amount of time before their effects are seen. They may require several weeks and even months to be effective but 80-90% control can be achieved. The most effective applications are made during the start of the growing season as soon as fire ants become active. Worker ants start foraging as soon as the warm weather becomes conducive for fire ant activity. Now is a good time to start planning a fire ant control program and bait-style productrs can be applied soon. Some of the more popular bait products are Amdro Fire ant Bait and Extinguish Plus.

Contact insecticides are used as a fast-acting control method and are applied directly to each mound. Effects can be seen within a few hours. You will find several options to choose from including Ortho Fire Ant Killer, Garden Tech Over’n Out, Bayer Advanced Fire Ant Killer, and Bengal Ultra Dust 2X. Many of these products contain the same active ingredient so instead of asking which one is the best, the better question to ask yourself is am I applying it properly?

A lot of people are looking for ways to control red imported fire ants in vegetable garden or backyard fruit tree situations. Spinosad products are labeled for such uses and Fertilome “Come and Get It II Fire Ant Killer” is popular at local independent retailers like feed stores and plant nurseries. Know the different areas where you want to manage fire ant populations and choose a product that includes those types of areas in the label. Other important information such as any safety precautions, how to store, and specific application instructions can be found on that same label.

The Louisiana SPCA is excited to announce plans for Operation Whiskers, a multi-parish collaborative initiative to address Louisiana cats still impacted by Hurricane Ida. The project is completely free for residents to participate in and is designed to: •RESCUE both owned and unowned cats still impacted by this devastating storm.

•REUNITE lost cats with their owners, as our priority.

•REHOME cats that were once pets but cannot be reunited due to the impact of Ida. •RETURN sterilized and ear-tipped community cats through extensive TNR efforts, to include an initial eleven large-scale two-day events.

Working together, organizations from Terrebonne Parish, Lafourche Parish, Je¬fferson Parish, Plaquemines Parish, and Orleans Parish created a regional feline response initiative named Operation Whiskers. Our intent is to get displaced cats back home and to their families, and stabilize the population before the impending cat population explosion that happens every spring in Louisiana.

Hurricane Ida ravaged Louisiana’s coastlines as a Category 4 hurricane. The shelters in south Louisiana lost power for weeks and parts of the coastal communities were completely wiped out. Working with outside partners, the sheltering community focused on responding to abandoned dogs and were quickly overwhelmed with the hundreds of dogs needing to be rescued, housed, reunited with owners, and transported out to shelter partners across the country. Compounded with staffing shortages and the ongoing challenges associated with the pandemic, our community could not do more for cats than feed-in-place.

Many families and community cat caregivers were unable to return due to lack of utilities and ultimately the destruction of their housing. Many pets were displaced in the disaster and their families are desperate to find them. Community cat TNVR initiatives were unable to continue, resulting in an increasing number of cats in the affected area. Compounding the problems was the already established backlog of spay/ neuter surgeries due to COVID-19 and inability to reopen veterinary services at all of the shelter locations for nearly two months.

While Hurricane Ida seems like a long time ago, it has only been 20 weeks. Those of us familiar with disaster response understand it often takes years to recover. Now is the time to address the needs of the impacted cats, both owned and unowned.
