Hey, speaking of 2021 PRHS Seniors and community pride, don’t forget to come out to congratulate and cheer on our Seniors as they parade down Hwy. 41. on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at 5pm. The Pearl River High Class of 2021 will celebrate their last day of school with a parade down Highway 41. Seniors will line up in the Jubilee parking lot and will be led by a police escort to Pearl River High. Once they drive through the school parking lot they will disband. This event is hosted by Kim Galatas Johnsen and Sarah Wrenn Stroyewski.

The spawn of Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler, Les Miles took the road less traveled (by those coaches who know nothing of how to communicate) and wound up taking a road to dusty Lawrence, Kansas to conduct his dog and phony show at the University of Kansas. And now, like another former LSU coach, Miles has been accused of being Mr. Horndoggie during his latter years at the Ole War Skule. Now Kansas, (as in R Kansas, the way 19th century rurals and Les Miles pronounced Arkansas) has told Mr. Miles that he is no longer “a damn strong football coach” and fired him, or as Les would say, “gave me the boondoggle”or some such malaprop.

Imagining Les Miles coming on to a young coed is like imagining Sponge Bob Square Pants posing for a fashion magazine ad. But even southern Ohio hormones in an over-the-hill mental misfit still register from time to time. Too bad. And the man who found “the chest” of a one-time LSU quarterback commitment lagging, (“Ya gotta have chest, miles and miles and miles of chest….”) allegedly also found the chests of less than nubile student athletic department female workers at LSU to have the same inadequacies.

Of course, all of this is still pending and being vetted but a smart bettor will lay odds “The Hat” will be flat by summer. Maybe Jarrett Lee found the alleged love nest of his favorite college football coach that memorable November night ten years ago in Tuscaloosa. Who knows?

Meanwhile, the grifter that keeps on grifting will attempt to answer questions as millionaire attorneys duel over the now very tarnished soul of this clown. The man who was paid big bucks

What beautiful Springtime weather we are having. It can truly inspire a person to get out and do things around the house and in the yard that need to be done. And most importantly it can inspire a person to do some crafting.

It has been awhile since I made a new grape vine wreath for the front door. So, I decided it was time. Michael’s had 50% off sale on all their silk flowers so I headed on over to see what they had that I might like. They really didn’t have a lot that I was interested in. But, I did manage to find 3 flower If you’re dead set on campus seduction, Les, maybe you should have taken the path of an old school coach I heard about who would conjugally visit the spouses of his coaching staff. Of course, bushes that I knew I would be able to do something with.

They didn’t have a grapevine wreath so I ended up going to Miles probably thinks “conjugal” is a heavily forested part of Africa or South America where Hobby Lobby. I had most of the other supplies (floral wire, criminally convicted men and women live. The man whose verbal talents were parallel to Forest glue sticks, and Sarah floral foam) I needed in my craft room.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Ties with Wings of Hope Leads to Rehab, Release of Bald Eagle Todd Harper had no idea what his son Luke and niece Madison Hogan had brought back from the pasture of his cattle ranch near Hammond when they drove up in a utility terrain vehicle. Luke yelled they had an injured bird, perhaps a hawk. But when Todd Harper went outside to check, he realized it was a bald eagle. Immediately, he contacted the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement division. And so started the process of nursing the injured eagle back to health and led to its released March 12 near where it had been discovered.

The eagle, recovered by Luke, 10, and Madison, 12, was discovered on the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 17. Luke and Madison noticed it tried flying but immediately fell to the ground. They said they retrieved it and made their way back to the house. LDWF enforcement agent Cpl. Brody Roberts, from Kentwood, was dispatched to Harper’s house. The eagle was emaciated and barely able to move. Roberts secured the eagle then took to Leslie Lattimore, who runs the Wings of Hope Wildlife Sanctuary in Livingston, about a 45-minute drive from Harper’s house.

“It was just so weak it didn’t even put up a fight,’’ Roberts said. “I drove 45 minutes with it in the truck and it didn’t flap or jump or anything. With a bald eagle we’re, of course, going to take action and take care of it. It was good to follow the whole rehab process. I would check in with Miss Leslie to see how it was doing. And she told me it was doing great. Good to see to it released.’’ Lattimore, who has successfully rehabbed countless birds and other wildlife at the sanctuary, was able to bring the animal back to health. She said the eagle had likely been injured several weeks prior to her discovery, leading to her being emaciated. “It was a soft tissue injury in the right wing,’’ Lattimore said. “There were no breaks, just a severe soft tissue injury until she became emaciated. When they get that way they just can’t fly. It took us a while before we got her up to speed and put her in the flight cage. Then she was bouncing around, regained her strength until we were ready to let her be released.’’

The release was a day of celebration for the Harper family and friends as well as Lattimore and LDWF. The cage housing the eagle was taken to a pasture on Harper’s farm. Luke and Madison assisted Lattimore with opening the cage to let the eagle go. Roberts, too, was on hand. After leaving the cage, the eagle bounded about before taking off. It circled the area, landed in a field about 200 yards away then flew and roosted in a tree. “This is certainly a success story and a great example of how our partnerships with rehabbers throughout the state benefit birds and wildlife in Louisiana,’’ said Biologist Manager Melissa Collins, who oversees LDWF’s rehabilitation program. “The rehabbers are the experts and that’s why we work with them in cases like this.”

“And,” Collins added, “it’s important to point out that the best thing to do when it comes to situations like this is to assess from a distance and get in touch with LDWF or one of our licensed rehabbers for advice and instruction prior to intervening.’’

The bald eagle has made an impressive comeback nationally and in Louisiana since the early 1970s when pesticides, specifically DDT, decimated the population. In the early 1970s, there were only five to seven active bald eagle nests in Louisiana. An LDWF survey in 2017-18 revealed there are well over 350 active nests in the state and that is a conservative estimate.

Though no longer endangered, bald eagles remain protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, a federal statue used to make sure those species continue to thrive.

Tony’s Take NOTHING COULD BE FINER THAN TO LEAVE THE 49ERS Two 49er Super Bowls ago (sorry, Saints fans) I invested in two Stadium Building Licenses in the new Levis Stadium in Santa Clara, California. It was a bit pricey but the Niners were hot and had a phenomenal young quarterback named Colin Kaepernick and the future looked bright. The licenses were for the purpose of having two season tickets in a great location in the new, state-of-the-art stadium. I was thrilled.

As most of you know, the Niners lost in the Blackout Super Bowl in New Orleans as Kaepernick could not find a way to score a touchdown from the five yard line on first and goal. That was the beginning of the end of that 49er era, as the kneeling and anti-police derogatory dialog began from the man who liberal media would have you believe was part Messiah and part Messiah the Sequel…Colin the Great.

Once Levis opened, the first season proved to be a financial wash for me as I sold some seats at a premium but didn’t have the opportunity to attend a game. The next year I wasn’t able to sell one set for any game and lost money. The third year i decided to opt out on season tickets. However, that meant that I would no longer be able to buy my own seats for future seasons because I hadn’t renewed for the third season. A couple of years later, the team offered to renew the seats so I could have a value in reselling my licenses but I had to buy the tickets first, then sell the package. That turnip truck had long left the highway and I almost politely declined the offer from the millionaire heir with no skin in the game, Jeb York, the new owner of the team through his mother, the sister of former owner Eddie DeBartolo. Eddie was aces, as they said in the old days back East, while Jeb was a four flush, a pair of deuces at best. His support team was the same control freaks who now want to run this country with their agenda, arrogance and elitism….after all, his (his uncle’s) operation was set smack dab in the middle of Silicon Valley.

Fast forward to 2021. After opting out on paying anything in 2020 (and getting a Republican Party type non-reaction) from the Niners, I figured they had enough problems and/or realized that Covid had also reached the bowels of the Deplorable Nation. No such luck. A few months ago, the first of several emails informing me of my continuing financial obligation came from the team headquarters. They, amazingly, had finally figured out that I hadn’t paid my 2020 title and they would need that soon, along with my 2021 payment. They, of course, alluded to a section of the contract I had signed so long ago that MIGHT lead to consequences other than being in default, which is what they declared my situation to be. Wow! That meant I couldn’t apply for non-49er events, like a WWF match or the Pac-12 championship game. Broke my heart in a billion pieces, cher!

Not being able to respond to a non-responsive email address nor a telephone link that led me on a Catch-22 chase to nowhere, I finally received a FEDEX package with the same woosey threats. But the package had a different phone number that actually allowed me to contact the team. I did and left a message that they needed to call me.

To their credit, they did so, in a timely and polite manner. After venting my spleen over the team’s operation, attitude, lineage, et, al, the young man on the phone made my day. He told me that in the seven years of people not paying or threatening not to pay on their licenses, not one scofflaw had any action taken against them. Talk about a paper tiger! Of course, the team wouldn’t let you know that under normal circumstances but in my case, the truth came out, voluntarily, without recourse. That meant I could basically dump my 2020 and 2021 invoices. Besides, the contract states the money in such a situation doesn’t go to the 49ers but to the City of Santa Clara. Now tell me…..with absolutely no track record of pursuing payments over six of seven relatively normal years, did I really think the folks in Accounts Receivable in Santa Clara would be concerned about my piddling bill, 2,000 miles away, with several California-hating states between us and them? And within weeks or so, I’m sure the Spanish-speaking staff of that fine city will be up to their tortillas in explaining to the Biden guests from the South why they just can’t barge into a $2 million home and take it over while guzzling cerveza down Main Street. Gotta love California Governor Gavin Newsome with his forward-thinking Exchange Program, fueled by the new Congress and Prez. Of course, the issue of Newsome remaining Governor (and above ground) is ready to hit the ballot in a special election because even California liberals don’t want their Chablis completely replaced with Corona. After all, that’s not good form, old chap!

To conclude: I remain a fan of the team after more than 60 years but the 49er Corporation and I have split the sheets. Ain’t that some sheet?

Words to GREAUX by AZALEAS After what the world went through in 2020, everyone was skeptical as we eased into the first couple of months of 2021. The lingering COVID-19 concerns and political chaos from January didn’t cause any plant problems but the crazy winter storm in February sure did wreck tropical and semi-tropical landscape plants throughout the region. Areas to the west of Hammond, Louisiana received prolonged ice stress as temperatures stayed below freezing for several days. Amongst all the Will Afton chaos, gardeners were wondering how it would affect the annual azalea bloom as several varieties were started to swell their buds prior to the winter storm. After spending time outside during the first weekend of Spring 2021, its obvious that our beloved azaleas were able to pull through and put on one of the better displays of color the area has seen in a couple of years. While we enjoy the wonderful azalea bloom of 2021, lets revisit information on how to care for azalea plants in the lower Gulf South region.

Like all other spring blooming shrubs including gardenia, Indian hawthorn, and viburnum, azaleas should be pruned once they finish flowering. Azaleas and the other spring blooming plants set their flower buds for next year during the summer months of the year prior. If pruned too late in the year, the flowering schedule will be disrupted. I prefer to use hand pruners and prune individual branches separately, but many folks use larger cutting implements to prune larger plantings. Ideally, you want to remove about one third of the plant during the pruning process. Some bushes may require removal of up to half of the plant and in some cases a rejuvenation prune can be beneficial on azalea plants. Rejuvenation pruning is where a majority of the canopy is removed from a plant and it’s allowed to regrow from the root system. Not all plants can handle such a drastic application, but azaleas in decent health respond favorable in most situations.

Apply fertilizer after pruning and water it in thoroughly. The results of a soil test will provide you with information on current soil pH and elemental deficiencies. Use the information from the soil test to determine what elements are deficient in the soil.

Choose a fertilizer product based on what elements are not in sufficient amounts. Soil pH can be adjusted by amending with sulfur or agricultural limestone. If Inspect plants throughout the growing season. Azalea lacebugs can be a serious issue during the heat of summer. Avoid them now by applying a systemic insecticide in the spring. Look for products like Fertilome Systemic Drench, BioAdvanced Tree and Shrub, or Merit. All three contain imidacloprid as an active ingredient and are labeled to control azalea lacebugs in the landscape.

Spider mites and scale insects can also become problematic during the growing season. Those issues can be treated with oil and soap sprays before daily temperatures average higher than 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit. Later during the fall months, red headed azalea caterpillars may show up to feed on foliage. Treat them, along with any other caterpillar pests, using spinosad or Bacilius thuringiensis. Remember to always read and follow the product label when applying any type of pesticide, whether it be conventional, natural, or organic.

Become A Foster and Help Rescue Animals Fostering a rescue animal is one of the most rewarding experiences anyone could have. When it comes to volunteering and helping homeless animals, fostering is one of the key pillars of finding an animal a forever home.

Fostering a rescue pet allows that animal to grow outside of a shelter environment. Although animal shelters are safe houses that provide food, water and a warm bed to sleep in, nothing really compares to the feeling of being in a home.

Also, animals thrive on human interaction, so forming a bond with their foster parent allows them to let their guards down a bit and show us their true personalities. For some animals, the shelter can be too loud and stressful for them, so as a result they hide their true personality behind a scared version of themselves. Fostering an animal allows that rescue pet to relax and become more comfortable with their surroundings.

There are multiple different types of fostering that you can sign up for! There is our Kitten Krewe, which takes in our kittens that are too young for the adoption floor, but old enough to eat food on their own. There is a bottle baby foster program for anyone looking to take care of newly born kittens or puppies who may still need to be nursed. We also offer medical or behavioral fostering for those animals with medical issues so that they can heal in a home or for animals who need a little more time to open up to us.
