Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Agents Investigating Lake Pontchartrain Boating Fatality Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents are investigating a fatal boating incident that occurred on March 6 in Lake Pontchartrain.

LDWF agents along with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of Rod Willhoft, 33, of Arabi, around 11 a.m. on March 7 near where the incident took place.

LDWF agents were notified about a boating incident in the middle of Lake Pontchartrain around 6 p.m. on March 6. Agents learned that a 24-foot bay boat with five passengers on board collided with the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge on Lake Pontchartrain.

Willhoft was ejected from the boat and entered the water and didn’t resurface. The other four passengers stayed in the vessel. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office was first on the scene and transported the four passengers to a boat launch. Two of the passengers were airlifted and the other two were taken by ambulance to University Medical Center in New Orleans. The four passengers sustained serious injuries and are listed in stable condition.

The LDWF Enforcement Division will the lead investigative agency for this fatal boating incident. Willhoft was not wearing a personal flotation device when he entered the water.

Last weekend was so beautiful! I even decided to cut the grass.Ok, it wasn’t really that tall but, hey, the weather was beautiful! Other than enjoying the beautiful weather I didn’t do much else, except work on the project I am sharing with you today. And that took a day and a half due to my grandson’s cat Yami. I am sure I told you about him rescuing a 3 day old baby kitten. Well, Yami will be 2 years old in June and he is so spoiled, he thinks he has to be involved in everything.

He has started getting up on the desk when I am crafting, wanting to see what is going on. Sometimes I feel like he is even critiquing me.

At times, he even tries to get the paint brush out of my hand. My grandson says he is mimicking me. I don’t know about all that, he drives me at times.

With all that being said, Spring is close! And I am thinking about all those April showers. I think the designer of this pattern captured that with a lot of fun and whimsy. I love painting designs by Laurie Speltz and enjoy taking her online classes. With everything that is going on in the world, we need to look at the fun side of things every once in a while. This particular piece has several layers of paint. First the basic base coat, then there are the washes with 3 different colors, on top of that is a layer of stenciling and finally, the design is drawn on and the little chick comes to life. The base coating, shading and highlighting of the chick. Creating the water puddles and deciding where I wanted to put the splash drops. I am not really good at hand lettering but I was given a few tips and tricks. The most important of all is patience and taking your time. This was a truly fun piece to paint. I will be painting a few more of these. Think I will add a bow tie, that should be cute. This one will be hanging right by the front door to greet everyone and remind them, with the rain comes cleansing and a fresh start.

Beth and I took Doctor Brasher and his wife Maggie fishing Saturday after the fog eased up. As it was we found thick sea fog once in open water. Radar is a must when running down here. Dock wanted to try for trout. The last place I found any was around the Empire jetties. The most I found so far was 5. Still early but in another month it should be good. April is usually the begining of the season. Once in place Maggie hooks and looses a good fish. A few casts later Beth is hooked up and lands this beautiful redfish. After a photo it is released to breed and fight another day.

NO ONE BEATS OUR PRICES! As we moved around we finally found one of those early yellow mouth critters. Maggie was having trouble holding this frisky critter so I gave her the gripper for the picture. We were on the board with out targeted critters.

As we were picking away at the sheepshead my little fisher woman decides to do battle with a beautiful speckled trout.

This big girl did not want to come to our boat but Beth insisted it join us for dinner. Unfortunately this was the last trout of the day. I was happy with the 2 quality trout we had in tha box.

We ended our excursion with a baker’s dozen of sheepshead and 2 beautiful trout. We could have done a lot more if we did not have to wait until almost 10:00 due to the fog.

At the dock my honey had to show off her trophy once again. It was a good quick trip with another good lunch at Venice Marina.

Life is Good!

The fog bank was just a few hundred feet from us but we were out of it and the air was a lot warmer. I am sure some of the bites we were missing were trout by the quickness of the hit. Fortunatly the sheepshead were giving us some good action.

The first one in the box was a very good size. Doc wanted them for his table fare. He and Maggie made several comments about how good they tasted as we were putting them in the box on ice.

IMPORTANT NOTE! We have had very thick fog. On the water you have no idea where you are or what direction you are going in.

Without radar do not attempt to go out. Adjust your electronic settings to the conditions. Keep them on a close scale. I use 1/8 or 1/16 mile for radar and no more than 100 feet on my track. Please stay safe.

Words to GREAUX by SPRING VEGETABLE GARDEN ISSUES Vegetable gardeners throughout the region are preparing for the spring summer growing season. A lot of folks within the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan Area find themselves waiting until Good Friday (Friday, April 2, 2021) to get their spring vegetable garden planted. At the LSU AgCenter, we recommend planting on or after March 15 for Will Afton southern Louisiana gardens. The chance of a frost is greatly reduced after March 15. However, that doesn’t mean that it never happens. Check local weather reports and extended forecasts for information on late season frosts. Ultimately, planting early is essential for natural and organic production systems. Be ready to cover tender transplants in case a late spring frost decides to come out way.

Where to Plant?

Access to direct contact sunlight is a must for vegetable garden plants. These plants need sunlight to drive photosynthesis and create much needed energy so that they are productive and provide good yields. Surface and internal drainage are also important for optimum vegetable production. Puddles that remain for days after an extended rain event are an indicator of poor drainage. Avoid sites with poor drainage or start doing things to improve drainage such as utilizing drainage swales, strategically placed trenches, or increasing the grade by adding soil.

The last thing to consider when finding a location for the vegetable garden is to have it close by.

Gardens placed at the back of the lot will often get overlooked and forgotten. Keep the garden close to the action so that its easy to do garden tasks. Satisfy these three requirements and watch your garden become more and more productive as you gain more experience growing food at home.

What to plant?

Now is the time to prepare a warm season vegetable garden, the most popular veggie garden season. Some of the typical crops include bell peppers, cantaloupes, cucumbers, eggplants, hot peppers, southern peas, specialty peppers, pumpkins, tomatoes, and watermelon. How to Fertilize?

Plants receive nutrition through root uptake of elements and minerals from the surrounding soil. Existing in-ground gardens should be soil tested early in the year to determine current soil pH and nutrient levels. The ideal situation for all in-ground vegetable gardens is to have “High” and “Very High” levels of each nutrient listed on the soil test report. The concept behind a basic fertilizer program is to provide nutrients that are found to be deficient. Both conventional and organic sources are available for each of the common nutrients needed by plants for normal growth and development.

Containerized vegetable gardens are treated slightly different. Potting soils and bulk garden soils are somewhat different that native topsoil found out in the yard. Native topsoil (real soil) is made from the weathering of parent material and bedrock. This provides certain nutrients depending on where the soil originated. In potting soils and bulk garden soils, a mixture if various organic components are put together so that they have similar physical characteristics of topsoil. Some topsoil products like Miracle-Gro Garden Soil include a fertilizer in the mix. Read the product labels to determine if this is the case. Use a complete fertilizer at the labeled rate for potting soils with no initial fertilizer input.

How to Control Weeds?

Weeds drive a lot of gardeners mad. Plan a weed control program during the initial planning of the vegetable garden. The first layer of weed control starts with the proper spacing of plants in the garden. Second layer of control should be addressed using a mulch to cover bare ground.

Scouting the garden every few days and physically removing weeds as they appear is a third layer of control. Lastly, herbicide options are available. Pre-emergent herbicides are applied to control weeds as they germinate. Post-emergent herbicides are used to control weeds that are currently growing. You will find selective post-emergent products that can be sprayed over-thetop of vegetable plants to control certain types of weeds. Organic options are available as well.

Feeding Pets in Need At the Louisiana SPCA, keeping pets in their homes is a top priority no matter what. We understand that sometimes life can make things difficult, so we are proud to offer our food pantry services to those that need it most. We are here to offer pet food and supplies to those pet owners who are facing challenging times.

In 2020, we were able to deliver over 100,000 pounds of food to pet parents who and animals most in need. Due to some of the hardships presented during the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a dramatic spike in requests for pet food and partnered with local and national groups to expand our pet food pantry. We also donated pet food and supplies to other human food pantries around the Greater New Orleans area to help bring supplies to those who could not make it to our facilities. Throughout 2020, we were able to make a lasting impact on hundreds of pets and their families. Now, we look to do the same in 2021.

Our food pantry is available at both our New Orleans and Plaquemines Parish campuses, and both provide pet food, toys, and other essential items to help pets stay with their families. Our mission at the Louisiana SPCA is to promote, protect, and advance the well-being of Louisiana’s companion animals, and our food pantry allows us to carry out this mission in an amazing way.
