Dear Bud Selig WannaBe (Rob Manfred): Your muliti-billionaire owners want to play hardball again, I see. The last time this happened, most of a season was lost. And you know something? Fewer people care about this “national pastime” very much on your level. Because we know, you really don’t give a crap about anyone who doesn’t fly first class and own at least one yacht. You care even less about a beleaguered city like Atlanta whose only “crime” was to be part of a state where your puppet masters didn’t like the voting laws. So you cratered and allowed the national pastime All Star game to be moved to Denver, where voting laws were more stringent against minorities than most anywhere else. Where was the World Series won and played, ass bite?

So what if the season is delayed or cancelled? There is so much more to do in this nation than to watch a bunch of pampered players toil for a bunch of pampered owners, all of whom were made rich by Joe Six Pack and his ilk. Well, Joe Six Pack is tired of being handled, sort of like the way the country was handled during the Covid pandemic, which nearly ended the day before the State of the Union speech last week.

Take your ball and go home, Manfred Not a Man. This country’s collective balls have had enough of your garbage and your oligarchical demands and just wants to play ball the way life meant it to be played. Few people can afford to take a family to a game without breaking the bank anymore, so you’re losing attendance. We’ll watch the games at home, thank you, listening to Joe Buck drone on about the analytics of a sport that has lost most of its joy. We really don’t care about your caviar differences in the way players are treated or compensated at the big league level. The players who are getting royally screwed here play what’s left of Triple A, Double A, single A and lower minor league ball, where compensation barely reaches fast food worker levels. Contaminate the soil of major league baseball development and the cultivation of this game goes bad all the way to the top. One day, folks will look at these quaint open air baseball fields and wonder why anyone would sit around to watch a game that left its supporters on the shore while it sailed away to a perceived Paradise. It’s becoming Paradise Lost now, Manfred, with little of the panache of the NFL or NBA. If you don’t have an answer for this missive, Dude, I figure you could text AOC for some advise. You’re her bitch now after Atlanta and since you don’t have an original thought that isn’t paid for by your betters, I won’t wait on a response. Like Los Angeles residents, we can live without major league sports and do just fine, thank you. Maybe you can sell your yacht to a dismayed Russian whose own boat has been seized or sunk by forces who also want to see a fair shake in this world.

Hope you all had a memorable Mardi Gras, you caught lots of beads and trinkets, and you are looking forward to next year’s celebration. I decided to forgo Fat Tuesday. I cut the grass, went shopping. did some painting, and just caught up on things I had been putting off. I really enjoyed my day. I hated telling my granddaughter that I was passing on the parades. But, she totally understood, she had a great time with her Mom and some of her high school friends.

Now that Mardi Gras is over, it is time to think Spring! With the beautiful weather we have been having, How can you not think of Spring? And what better way to welcome Spring than with Tulips. This piece was designed by a Canadian artist. This is actually from a 3 piece set which includes a sunflower and lilac design. They are on my painting table, the large tags are prepped and just waiting for me to begin painting them. I will share those with you a little later. The size of the tag is 6 X 10 and made from baltic birch. I really like the way the edges of the tag look so aged. This was such a fun piece to paint. I can hardly wait to paint the other two.

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 3.14.19 Fishing with Leam This kid has been wanting to go fishing for a while. The last time we went he only caught 4 very small black drum under very bad conditions. Today was going to be different as I had promised.

He was the first to hook up. After a very good battle he was the victor. A nice 31 incher. What a way to start the day.

I am looking to the next time I can get him out there. He is ready for the next trip.

This kid can FISH! We had a good day fishing but we were struggling to find some slot fish. This was my 5th place I had in mind to hit today. I was very disgusted at the first 3 places I looked at and went right around to the “hot spot”.

We got some doubles and some keepers did show up. After about 2 hours of this and mom shivering in the cold fog and wind it was time to head in.

Words to GREAUX by LET’S PLANT A SPRING VEGETABLE GARDEN. As the days get longer and the weather starts getting warmer in later winter, the gardener starts to get excited. Commercial and market farmers have been working continuously behind the scenes as they prepare for the on coming spring vegetable season. Many of them have been producing their own transplants in controlled environments (inside Will Afton under grow lights) and is getting closer to the appropriate time to plant them outside. Mid-March is a good time to target for getting those spring vegetables planted in the ground. However, keep in mind that cold weather events can still happen well into April.

And, if the old saying rings true, “thunder in February brings a freeze in April”, then we might want to keep the row covers handy!

While a lot of us have been growing food for a while, many new gardeners get started each spring. It’s important to review the basics of vegetable gardening to guide new gardeners and to reaffirm the old gardeners. Access to direct contact sunlight is a must for vegetable garden plants. These plants need sunlight to drive photosynthesis and create much needed energy so that they are productive and provide good yields. Surface and internal drainage are also important for optimum vegetable production. Puddles that remain for days after an extended rain event are an indicator of poor drainage. Avoid sites with poor drainage or start doing things to improve drainage such as utilizing drainage swales, strategically placed trenches, or increasing the grade by adding soil. The last thing to consider when finding a location for the vegetable garden is to have it close by. Gardens placed at the back of the lot will often get overlooked and forgotten. Keep the garden close to the action so that it’s easy to do garden tasks. Satisfy these three requirements and watch your garden become more and more productive as you gain more experience growing food at home.

Now is the time to prepare a warm season vegetable garden. Some of the typical crops include bell peppers, cantaloupes, cucumbers, eggplants, hot peppers, southern peas, specialty peppers, pumpkins, tomatoes, and watermelons. Existing in-ground gardens should be soil tested early in the year to determine current soil pH and nutrient levels. The ideal situation for in-ground vegetable gardens is to have “High” and “Very High” levels of each nutrient listed on the soil test report. The concept behind a basic fertilizer program is to provide nutrients that are found to be deficient. Both conventional and organic sources are available for each of the common nutrients needed by plants for normal growth and development.

Containerized vegetable gardens are treated slightly different. Potting soils and bulk garden soils are somewhat different that native topsoil found out in the yard. Native topsoil (real soil) is made from the weathering of parent material and bedrock. This provides certain nutrients depending on where the soil originated. In potting soils and bulk garden soils, a mixture of various organic components are put together so that they have similar physical characteristics of topsoil. Some topsoil products like Miracle-Gro Garden Soil include a fertilizer in the mix. Read the product labels to determine if this is the case. Use a complete fertilizer at the labeled rate for potting soils that don’t include fertilizer on the ingredient list.

Lastly, weeds drive a lot of gardeners mad. Plan a weed control program during the initial planning of the garden. The first layer of weed control starts with the proper spacing of vegetable plants. The second layer of control involves using a mulch to cover bare ground throughout the garden. Scouting the garden every few days and physically removing weeds as they appear is a third layer of control. Lastly, herbicide options are available. Pre-emergent herbicides are applied to control weeds as they germinate. Post-emergent herbicides are used to control weeds that are currently growing. You will find selective post-emergent products that can be sprayed over-the-top of vegetable plants to control certain types of weeds. Organic options are available as well. Make sure to read and follow the product label before applying any type of herbicide.

At the Louisiana SPCA, keeping pets in their homes is a top priority, no matter what. We understand that sometimes life can make things difficult, so we are proud to offer our food pantry services to those that need it most. We are here to offer pet food and supplies to those pet owners who are facing challenging times.

In 2021, we were able to deliver over 100,000 pounds of food to pet parents who and animals most in need. Due to some of the hardships presented during the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a dramatic spike in requests for pet food and partnered with local and national groups to expand our pet food pantry. We also donated pet food and supplies to other human food pantries around the Greater New Orleans area to help bring supplies to those who could not make it to our facilities. Throughout 2021, we were able to make a lasting impact on hundreds of pets and their families. Now, we look to do the same in 2022.

Our food pantry is available at both our New Orleans and Plaquemines Parish campuses, and both provide pet food, toys, and other essential items to help pets stay with their families. Our mission at the Louisiana SPCA is to promote, protect, and advance the well-being of Louisiana’s companion animals, and our food pantry allows us to carry out this mission in an amazing way.

If you are picking up from our Plaquemines Parish Campus, walk-ins are welcome as well!
