As we march on to a new month to many it seems as if we are marching quickly but in circles. Covid-19 has affected so many in our town. Many sports have been canceled due to Covid, no word of a Town clean up due to covid, and no word of any Town events coming up due to Covid. The worst is the loss of loved ones and friends. This week we lost yet another dear Pearl River resident, neighbor, and friend. Pearl River lost a true Gem. Kim Daw will be greatly missed in our community. Although, this virus has redirected so much in our small town, shutting down many communities gathers, we still remain a close-knit community. We are PR strong! I am very proud to say I am from Pearl River. The fundraisers in our town for those in need have not stopped, the support of local businesses continue on, and helping our neighbors will not stop!!! Hard to tell sometimes) has been on the air, diffusing his sorry ass criminal role in sending dozens if not hundreds of New Yorkers to a premature death due to his incrediblly stupid move to relocate Covid-19 patients into nursing homes.

Now even Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, she of AOC fame, has jumped the Governor in his shameful attempt to avoid investigation, censure, removal of office, jail time and if justice is served, made to walk through every ethnic neighborhood in the greater New York area after midnight on Friday and Saturday nights and explain to the children, grandchildren and friends of the departed how his arrogant manner was in the best interests of the health of their families. We’d send him to Poughkeepsie next but he wouldn’t even make it out of Queens or the Bronx. How’s that, tuff guy?

Nothing, including Hell or a woman scorned, has the fury of a righteously offended resident of the Manhattan isle and its sister land masses. Belle Chasse Academy is part of Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen, a growing network of like-minded schools enriching the lives of kids through a fun, fresh perspective on food. 7th grade students started a new unit on genetics – The Role of Genetics in Food Taste. To explore this topic further, the students were given the task of preparing two different types of salsa.

The class was separated into two groups and unknowingly, one group added a heavy amount cilantro, from the school’s garden, and the other group did not. Each student tasted both to see if they could tell what the difference was.

Some students concluded there was no major difference and some concluded there was a bitter and soapy taste. The students were then taught how there are genetic variations in taste receptors. These receptors may contribute to why some identified that the salsa with the heavy cilantro tasted soapy and bitter and students did not think so.

It clearly is passe’ in our lexigon.”

The term “Hey, Man!” is also verboten because “hey” can be misunderstood as “hay”, an agricultural product. Such an identity could also invoke thoughts of other similar agricultural products, such as cotton, which might invoke thoughts of racism and slavery.

Hope you all fared well with the freeze we experienced. Thankfully I did not have any busted pipe but know quite a few people that did. We Southerners are not accustomed to those cold temperatures. We did loose lights for several hours and it was so miserably cold in our house. I cannot imagine how hard it is for the people in Texas. They have my continued prayers.

The good news is, Spring will be here soon. With that being said, I wanted to show you what I have been doing. I just love my online painting classes and the teacher. She keeps everything simple and encourages you to change whatever she has designed and make it your own. And you can pick up the wood pieces at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, WalMart, and Target. If you want the exact wood piece you can order that from one of the suppliers.

Today’s project is done on a wooden chalkboard heart that was purchased from Target. First thing, the heart had to be prepped so the paint would stick to it. So I sanded it LIGHTLY, so I would not remove the black background. Then I applied a coat of Deco Art Sealer. Applied the main design lines and base coated my Irish Gnome. His hat is base coated Kelly Green with an overlay of Deco Art Extreme Sheen for a shiny glimmer. I also did the shamrocks the same way. His beard is Burnt Orange. All the lettering is done with Snow White. I did have help doing this one, my grandson’s cat, Yami, decided he needed to be a supervisor and laid himself on the painting desk and wouldn’t move.until I was done.

Oh yea, he did try to help...by getting paint on his front paws, belly, and tail. Gotta love him!

Looking for redfish I had a customer that wanted to have a party of 6 go on my boat for redfish. Ideally me trips are 2 or 3 people. I told him no for 6 people. That is a 2 or even 3 boat trip. 2 of them decided to stay on land and I went with 4 people. They wanted redfish.

I had not been in that area since before my knee replacement so I went scouting the day before. As luck would have it i was able to find a few nice redfish. No keepers though. This one was 40 inches. Not my biggest of the day. My biggest of the day was her big sister at 42 inches.

It was a cold ride to the place I wanted to fish. It was not long before we were blessed with our first good sized redfish.

As luck would have it they were looking for big reds and only wanted a few for dinner if they were small. If not no problem.

The bite was slow but under the windy conditions I decided to stay where I was and work the area hard. The conditions were so windythis day that i was the only boat that launched out of venice marina that day. I had akready told the customers that if conditions got worse I would call it.

We were safe but the winds were expected to shift and get stronger. I had no choice but to stay in this protected place.

We did miss a few because of a very slow bite. Some we even fought most of the way in before the fish would throw the hook. It would be a slow but reasonably good day under extreme conditions.

This was our only keeper of the morning. I was very glad she caught it. She had hooked, fought, and lost 3 big redfish and never put a fish in the box all morning.

There were actualy 3 boats that went out that day. 2 of us were in the same area. As the day progressed the bite never changed. We had bait all around and pelicans diving all around but it was just a slow bite.

Around noon the tide and the winds changed a bit. The tide started coming in and much to my disliking wth winds picked up a bit more. The bite ended as the water got muddy. We are ade about a 6 mile move to another place but struck out.

Another boat went around the corner and found a few. He callwd us in and we managed 15 slot sized eaters before it was time to head for the barn. I was very thankful for the other boat calling me in. Life is Good.

The offshore bite is on fire when the guys can get out.

One of the most common issues with home lawns is dealing with and getting rid of unwanted weed species that invade the turf. Lawn grasses and weeds are both plants. They compete amongst themselves for water, sunlight, and nutrients. Ideally, the lawn grass should have the growing advantage and be able to choke out other weedy plants. Always remember, the best defense against unwanted weeds is a healthy and vigorous lawn.

There are several different types of turfgrass grown as lawns in Louisiana. The most common varieties are centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, and zoysiagrass. Carpetgrass and bahiagrass are common pasture grasses and used as lawn grasses on large acreages. Each species of turfgrass has its own care and maintenance requirements. Start by identifying the turfgrass in your yard.

The soil provides a place for plant roots to grow. It also supplies plant roots with water and nutrients. A good soil will produce a healthy turfgrass. To learn information about the soil in your lawn, take a soil sample and have it analyzed. The most important part of the soil test report is the soil pH status. Soil pH dictates how easily the individual nutrients are available for the plant the access. Each species has its desired pH range. We can adjust soil pH by adding different soil amendments. Agricultural lime or dolomitic limestone are used to raise soil pH while elemental sulfur is used to lower soil pH. The soil test report also gives a survey of the main soil nutrients and provides their concentrations. Choose a fertilizer that fills in the gaps. Phosphorus and Potassium are needed in larger quantities within the plant. A rating of medium or lower indicates an insufficient amount. When shopping for different fertilizer products you’ll notice three numbers separated by dashes. It is referred to as the fertilizer analysis and represents the nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium (N-P-K) concentration of the product. There are many different fertilizer products with different concentrations of N-P-K. Once a proper fertilizer is selected, make the first application during the month of April.

Just like the various species of turfgrass have certain nutrient and pH requirements, they also have specific cutting heights. Mowing is the most common form of maintenance used on a lawn and there are many misconceptions about how to best cut the lawn. To measure mowing height simply measure the cut grass plants with a ruler after making a cut. It might be helpful to measure the actual mowing height for each setting on the lawn mower and record it in the owner’s manual for future reference. See the chart below for desired mowing heights of the common turfgrasses grown in Louisiana.

Drainage is fast becoming one of the most common stresses in Louisiana lawns. Weeklong rain events and humid weather present a multitude of problems. Lower areas of the yard will drain slower than the high areas. Any turfgrass will be affected by water logged soils and will thin out over time. Weeds that can handle those types of conditions win out and begin to take over. Use a good quality top soil or river sand/silt product to raise lower areas in the yard. The addition of a French drain can also help with drainage issues, especially in lawns that are flat and have little contour to direct the flow of water.

Lastly, you can attack the weeds themselves. Weeds are just plants that are growing out of place. They can be described as annual (living one year) or perennial (living year after year). This is important to know when selecting herbicides to control them. Herbicides can be described as selective (kills certain types of plants and not others) or non-selective (kills all plants). The most popular non-selective herbicide is glyphosate, and it can be found in products like Round Up and Hi-Yield Killzall. Selective herbicides are commonly used in lawn situations, especially types that can be applied over the top of lawn with no effect to the turfgrass. Ortho Weed B Gon and Fertilome Weed Free Zone are popular selective herbicides that can be used in lawns.

They provide good control of most broadleaf weeds growing in the lawn. Products like Image Nutsedge Killer, Sedgehammer, and Hi-yield Nutsedge Killer provide good control of sedgelike weeds growing in the lawn. All of the products listed above are known as post-emergent herbicides because they are applied to a plant that is already growing. Pre-emergent herbicides are used to kill plants as soon as they germinate. Annual weeds that come back from a seed are best controlled using pre-emergent herbicides. Dimension (dithiopyr) is the most popular herbicide of this type used by homeowners. Apply it in February and again in September for best results. Remember to always read and follow label instructions before applying any type of pesticide.

Feline Leukemia And FIV Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia (FeLv) are diagnosed through a quick blood test that your Vet will suggest you do every year, especially if your kitty likes to sneak outside to play with its friends.

FIV is a disease that is spread through our feline companions by a deep bite from an infected cat. FIV makes affected cats more susceptible to diseases by weakening their immune systems. Cats with FIV are more prone to getting sick from normally harmless bacteria found around them. Feline leukemia is a more aggressive virus than FIV and spreads from cat to cat more easily. However, it is preventable through a feline leukemia vaccine. FeLV infections can vary greatly because the virus can affect many systems in the body, and symptoms can vary depending on which system is affected. Feline leukemia weakens the immune system of an affected cat, leaving them susceptible to secondary infections. There is no treatment for feline leukemia, but with a low stress, indoor lifestyle, good nutrition, and regular vet care, these kitties can have a good quality of life.

When you bring a new cat into your home, it is important that you test them before you introduce them to other cats in the house. Kittens younger than 6 months who test positive may not actually be infected and a retest several weeks later is often recommended in confirming a diagnosis. While there is no cure for FIV or feline leukemia there is a vaccine for feline leukemia that is highly recommended to protect them.

FIV positive cats can live a long, normal life as long as they are well cared for and regularly see a vet for preventive care. FIV and FeLv is spread through fighting, biting, and mating, or it can be passed from mother to offspring. We can add slowing the spread of these feline viruses to our long list of reasons why Spaying and Neutering our pets is vitally important!

Supportive care for your FIV positive kitty is centered around controlling or treating secondary infections, keeping the cat indoors to prevent the spread of the disease, and extending the length of time that the cat is asymptomatic through a low stress environment, good nutrition, and regular vet visits.

An important distinction between these two common cat viruses is that FeLv is preventable through vaccinations while there is not a good, reliable FIV vaccination available currently. These special needs kitties deserve a caring, indoor lifestyle and regular visits to the vet because good quality preventative care will extend their life and increase their quality of life. And remember spaying and neutering your cat will help us stop the spread of these viruses!
